Abstract:
This research explores the concept of community development among the Igorot Indigenous Peoples in Benguet, Philippines. It investigates the Igorots’ understanding of their community in relation to their culture and their interaction with the ‘modern’ world. It explores Igorot perspectives on the relevance of their culture in obtaining their ‘desired development’ within the present realities of their community. Exploring culturally and academically appropriate methods of conducting research with Indigenous populations such as the Igorot community was an important process of this study. This research reveals that Indigenous researchers undertaking research in their own communities have no ‘automatic credibility’ in navigating and utilising Indigenous Peoples’ knowledge ways (Pohlhuas 2002). Drawing from Indigenous methodologies, the research employed Indigenous research methods using Igorot traditional ways of learning. The findings of the study reveal that the Igorot understanding of community is a combination of colonial and traditional culture and values. The participants argue that although they cannot fully practice their traditional culture as their ancestors did, they still recognise its significance in their present lives. This research explores the Igorots’ coping and adapting mechanisms including the establishing of peoples organisations and informal education as ways of working in the community. Specific models of community development, that utilise the strengths of the culture are explored which confirm that cultural context and knowledge systems are an essential component in researching and working with Indigenous Peoples. By recognising and appropriately using the strengths of cultural identity, consciousness and traditional values that the Igorots have, community workers are able to provide opportunities for the people to revive their traditional communal and relational living. The Igorots demonstrate that ‘prescribed development systems’ can be of great advantage to their community when deconstructed and viewed from the ‘window of the peoples’ culture’. Most importantly, the participants in this study have shown that Indigenous Peoples’ despite being historical ‘victims’ of development have the capabilities to as ‘active contributors’ to their own and to mainstream community development.

Abstract:
In my dissertation I deal with the role of percussion instruments in several most important works of the big Russian composer of the 20th century, Igor Stravinsky. The basis of this work is analyses describing and assessing the role of percussion instruments in these compositions. Each chapter is devoted to one analysed work. The structure of the chapters is unchangeable, an introduction gives some information about the given composition, under which conditions it originated, what the composer's aim was, who commissioned or initiated it, when it was premiered etc. The main part of each chapter is the analysis of the piece focused on technical demands of individual parts of percussion instruments, their playing in unison an combination with other instruments. Igor Stravinsky's highly complicated musical vocabulary using rapid changes of irregular juxtaposed bars and largely involving percussion instruments made me choose his works. They are, in my opinion, the most important and often performed and, regarding a percussionist, they are considered to be the most challenging for mastering the orchestral playing. In the appendix to this master's dissertation I present examples of notation tangibly illustrating described difficulties and situations. I hope this dissertation to be an assed for several reasons: 1) It will become a useful source of information for professional percussionists as well as for conductors performing Stravinsky's works. 2) It may serve as a source of information for future musicologists or arrangers. 3) The additional advantage of this work is the fact that it is written by a practising percussionist since deep knowledge of percussion instruments technique enables to analyse Igor Stravinsky's compositions also with regard to interpretation demands on the player.

Phan, Thanh-Hien. "Simulation and Experimental Characterization of the Scintillation Detector for IGOSat." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019USPCC048.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation describes the work that has been done for the development of the scintillation detector of the IGOSat nanosatellite. Based on the requirements of the project, a concept of the detector has been proposed which required the validation by both simulations and experiments.IGOSat is a university satellite project aimed at developing a nanosatellite containing a scintillator payload that can measure the radiative background in the aurora zones and the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) on Low-Earth Orbit. Beside that, the satellite has a GPS Dual-Frequency Payload for measuring the Total Electronics Content (TEC) in the ionosphere. These two payloads are hosted on a 3U CubeSat platform that will be launched on a polar orbit at an altitude of about 650 km.The scintillator payload included a detector which is composed of an inorganic scintillation crystal and five surrounding organic scintillators. The chosen inorganic scintillator is Cerium Bromide (CeBr3), which is sensitive to both gamma-ray photons and electrons. The five surrounding EJ-200 plastic scintillators, which are mainly sensitive to the electrons, are chosen to discriminate the two types of particles. In other words we can say a particle is a gamma-ray photon when it interacts only in the CeBr3 crystal, while it is an electron if at least one interaction happened in a plastic scintillator.Monte-Carlo simulations have been used to investigate the detection ability of this detector. A response matrix has been made for the gamma-ray simulation, which can be used to estimate the original energy spectrum of the Low-Earth Orbit gamma-ray photons. An experimental test bench has been set up for measuring the detected spectrum of radioactive sources. These measurements are not only used to validate the simulation results, but also to determine the energy resolution of the detector, and a calibration method for it.A comparison between the Monte-Carlo simulations and the experimental measurements is also provided in this dissertation.Based on the topics described above, the dissertation has 6 chapters as listed below:- Chapter 1 is the introduction to the project and a review of the studies on Low-Earth Orbit radiative background, as well as description on the CubeSat development activities.- Chapter 2 describes the IGOSat satellite configuration on the platform, which is developed to support the payload based on their requirements.- Chapter 3 describes the concept of the scintillation detector, its electronics readout system and the operational concept of the payload.- Chapter 4 explains the physical processes of a particle in the scintillation materials, the Monte-Carlo simulations and the response matrix of the IGOSat detector.- Chapter 5 provides the experimental measurement results, based on each test bench that has been set up. The comparisons between simulation and experiment are also described at the end of this chapter.Chapter 6 is the conclusion of the work

Abstract:

Lee, SunHwa, and SunHwa Lee. "Aesthetics of Objectivism in Igor Stravinsky's Neoclassical Works." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/12469.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines Stravinsky’s aesthetics of objectivism, as described in his own book and displayed in three different genres from his neoclassical period: Symphonies of Wind Instruments (1920), Perséphone (1933), and Orpheus (1947). My research has significance, in that I combine aesthetics and musical analysis in examining Stravinsky’s objectivism. Drawing on Stravinsky’s book, Poetics of Music in the Form of Six Lessons, I define his objectivism as the structural organization of musical materials, the denial of expression of subjective emotion, the importance of the composer’s invention, and the concept of limitation. Stravinsky’s objectivism appears in various ways in the different genres. The instrumental piece Symphonies of Wind Instruments presents the lack of linear continuity and development. The melodrama Perséphone represents his objectivism through his rearrangement of French text, and the ballet Orpheus shows his restrained expression in reduced orchestration, quiet dynamics, and cool tone colors.

Hughes, Timothy Stephen. "An Argument for the Reassessment of Stravinsky's Early Serial Compositions." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1995. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc278325/.

Full text
Abstract:
Between 1952 and 1957, Igor Stravinsky surprised the world of music by gradually incorporating serialism into his style of composition. Although Stravinsky still used the neo-classical trait of making strong references to the music of earlier periods, musical analyses of this transitional period have focused on serial aspects to the exclusion of anachronistic elements. Evidence of Stravinsky's possible use of musical structures adapted from earlier times is found in his consistent use of musical figures that are closely related to the cadences of the late Medieval and Renaissance eras. By fully addressing these neo-classical traits in future analyses, music theorists will gain an additional perspective, which is helpful in understanding the music of Stravinsky's transitional period.

Abstract:
The present thesis focuses on the work of the Russian writer, philosopher and editor Igor Efimov and aims to analyse his literary path. His literary beginnings were influenced by the period of ‘the thaw’ in Soviet Russia. Later he started to publish his books in the West (under the penname of Moscovite). Efimov realised that the growing pressure from the government could end up in his arrest or even prevent him from publishing, so he chose to emigrate as numerous other writers, poets and artists. They together accounted for the non-official culture of this period. The emigration to the USA is considered as an important step in his literary career as it is there that he founded his own publishing house Hermitage. In this context the editorial activities of Igor Efimov are looked into. Moreover Efimov is studied as a writer. The analysis of his novels takes into account their literary and philosophical aspects

Court, Jean-Michel. Aix-Marseille 1, 2000. http://www.theses.fr/2000AIX10020.

Full text
Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
André Schaeffner (1895-1980), better known as ethnologist than for his musicological activity, in his works concerning classical music embraces a position against the kind of critique that claims to be “objective” or neutral towards the artwork. He makes a plea for a “critique of admiration” that takes sides and displays one’s preferences. His writings pay no heed to a teleological or systematic approach of the history of music. Instead, he puts the composer’s work in perspective, reconstructing its historical and aesthetic background. Many condemned this kind of approach as lacking any judgement criterion. Nevertheless, thanks to his study of the circumstances in which a composer’s works were created, Schaeffner was able to call into question common and supposedly true preconceptions and stereotypes. Based on a study of several documents – both published and unpublished texts, drafts, rich correspondence – this thesis shows how Schaeffner carried out this kind of critique, especially in his writings concerning two composers that he fervently admired: the deceased Claude Debussy and Igor Stravinsky, still alive at that time and with whom Schaeffner was acquainted; as well as how Schaeffner’s theories were received upon publication and what their validity is nowadays

Abstract: As a means for a better understanding of The Symphony of Psalms by Igor Stravinsky, and having in mind its interpretation through the process of preparation and performance, this dissertation discusses theoretical, historical and technical elements that participate in the development of the interpretive process. It is comprised of four chapters each approaching distinct aspects of the composition. The first chapter, in historical perspective, presents data about the composer's life . The second reflects on the Biblical texts used in the work and their origins within the Hebrew tradition. The third presents an analysis of the score as it discusses technical aspects such as musical form, instrumentation, orchestration, vocal writing, harmony and counterpoint. As a conclusion, the fourth chapter discusses interpretive elements and practical suggestions for its performance and interpretation. This final chapter, is indeed the prime objective of this work, and justifies all effort for its realization
