Full textThis dissertation describes the work that has been done for the development of the scintillation detector of the IGOSat nanosatellite. Based on the requirements of the project, a concept of the detector has been proposed which required the validation by both simulations and experiments.IGOSat is a university satellite project aimed at developing a nanosatellite containing a scintillator payload that can measure the radiative background in the aurora zones and the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) on Low-Earth Orbit. Beside that, the satellite has a GPS Dual-Frequency Payload for measuring the Total Electronics Content (TEC) in the ionosphere. These two payloads are hosted on a 3U CubeSat platform that will be launched on a polar orbit at an altitude of about 650 km.The scintillator payload included a detector which is composed of an inorganic scintillation crystal and five surrounding organic scintillators. The chosen inorganic scintillator is Cerium Bromide (CeBr3), which is sensitive to both gamma-ray photons and electrons. The five surrounding EJ-200 plastic scintillators, which are mainly sensitive to the electrons, are chosen to discriminate the two types of particles. In other words we can say a particle is a gamma-ray photon when it interacts only in the CeBr3 crystal, while it is an electron if at least one interaction happened in a plastic scintillator.Monte-Carlo simulations have been used to investigate the detection ability of this detector. A response matrix has been made for the gamma-ray simulation, which can be used to estimate the original energy spectrum of the Low-Earth Orbit gamma-ray photons. An experimental test bench has been set up for measuring the detected spectrum of radioactive sources. These measurements are not only used to validate the simulation results, but also to determine the energy resolution of the detector, and a calibration method for it.A comparison between the Monte-Carlo simulations and the experimental measurements is also provided in this dissertation.Based on the topics described above, the dissertation has 6 chapters as listed below:- Chapter 1 is the introduction to the project and a review of the studies on Low-Earth Orbit radiative background, as well as description on the CubeSat development activities.- Chapter 2 describes the IGOSat satellite configuration on the platform, which is developed to support the payload based on their requirements.- Chapter 3 describes the concept of the scintillation detector, its electronics readout system and the operational concept of the payload.- Chapter 4 explains the physical processes of a particle in the scintillation materials, the Monte-Carlo simulations and the response matrix of the IGOSat detector.- Chapter 5 provides the experimental measurement results, based on each test bench that has been set up. The comparisons between simulation and experiment are also described at the end of this chapter.Chapter 6 is the conclusion of the work

Full textThe present thesis focuses on the work of the Russian writer, philosopher and editor Igor Efimov and aims to analyse his literary path. His literary beginnings were influenced by the period of ‘the thaw’ in Soviet Russia. Later he started to publish his books in the West (under the penname of Moscovite). Efimov realised that the growing pressure from the government could end up in his arrest or even prevent him from publishing, so he chose to emigrate as numerous other writers, poets and artists. They together accounted for the non-official culture of this period. The emigration to the USA is considered as an important step in his literary career as it is there that he founded his own publishing house Hermitage. In this context the editorial activities of Igor Efimov are looked into. Moreover Efimov is studied as a writer. The analysis of his novels takes into account their literary and philosophical aspects

Full textAndré Schaeffner (1895-1980), better known as ethnologist than for his musicological activity, in his works concerning classical music embraces a position against the kind of critique that claims to be “objective” or neutral towards the artwork. He makes a plea for a “critique of admiration” that takes sides and displays one’s preferences. His writings pay no heed to a teleological or systematic approach of the history of music. Instead, he puts the composer’s work in perspective, reconstructing its historical and aesthetic background. Many condemned this kind of approach as lacking any judgement criterion. Nevertheless, thanks to his study of the circumstances in which a composer’s works were created, Schaeffner was able to call into question common and supposedly true preconceptions and stereotypes. Based on a study of several documents – both published and unpublished texts, drafts, rich correspondence – this thesis shows how Schaeffner carried out this kind of critique, especially in his writings concerning two composers that he fervently admired: the deceased Claude Debussy and Igor Stravinsky, still alive at that time and with whom Schaeffner was acquainted; as well as how Schaeffner’s theories were received upon publication and what their validity is nowadays

Abstract: As a means for a better understanding of The Symphony of Psalms by Igor Stravinsky, and having in mind its interpretation through the process of preparation and performance, this dissertation discusses theoretical, historical and technical elements that participate in the development of the interpretive process. It is comprised of four chapters each approaching distinct aspects of the composition. The first chapter, in historical perspective, presents data about the composer's life . The second reflects on the Biblical texts used in the work and their origins within the Hebrew tradition. The third presents an analysis of the score as it discusses technical aspects such as musical form, instrumentation, orchestration, vocal writing, harmony and counterpoint. As a conclusion, the fourth chapter discusses interpretive elements and practical suggestions for its performance and interpretation. This final chapter, is indeed the prime objective of this work, and justifies all effort for its realization
