Full textFöreliggande uppsats studerar rehabiliteringsträdgården i Alnarp via Erwin Panofskysikonologiska metod.

The notion “concrete” represents this change as a development in the history of science and the history of political thought, for instance in the work of great philosophers like Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Karl Marx, Sören Kierkegaard or Ernst Cassirer. Pictures took part on this change in the history of the concrete. The study discuss the iconology and ivarious definitions of the concrete in the Nineteenth Century in connection with the scientific drawing.

Full textIconography and emblemic have been called „sisters“ in the Baroque epoch though the previous one was several centuries older. Emblemic adopted all the motives from the written and drawn sources including those of iconography in the Baroque epoch. M. K. Sarbievijus (M. K. Sarbiewski, 1595 — 1640) is one of the most outstanding LMD poets who created in the Baroque epoch. His attitude towards Mother Mary was great in his lyrics. Virgin Mary’s iconography in M. K. Sarbievijus lyrics in the work of the master of since the images of Mary Fiance, Mary the Queen and Mary Mother of God analysed. E. Panovsky’s method was applied during the research. When creating the image of Mary the poet takes various iconographical models as help and supplements them with emblemic images. In odes, where The Song of Songs is imitated, The Virgin Mary codes a certain image that is the human soul. In other odes the image of The Virgin Mary is developed and given other various iconographical feathers of Mother Mary models. After the research had been finished it become obvious that all three iconographical types often merge n the lyrics of Sarbievijus. One can feel a strong synthesis of Antique and Christian layer in poet’s lyrics.

Paris, EPHE, 2004. http://www.theses.fr/2004EPHE4029.
Full textOur study tries to examine the role of public buildings in the capitals of the German Empire (Berlin) and the third French Republic (Paris) from 1871 to 1918. The urban space is therefore being considered as a crystallization of the national community and its construction of identity. Political history has since some time focussed on the study of collective identity and its symbolization. The approach we have adopted for our study is a crossing of this current of political history and of a more classical kind of history of architecture. It could be called political iconology of architecture in Paris and Berlin. Our study which tries to close this gap hopes to find its readers in both countries. It treats the following building types: Basilique of the Holy Heart, parliamentary assemblies, government and post offices, town halls, museums, churches and Synagogues

Full textThe thesis presents an art historical methodology that assesses clothing and its pictorial representations in order to interpret how material culture relates to social construction. Using as an example an impressive patronage project of the Tornabuoni family – a newly rich family of merchants in the circle of the Medici – reveals the possibilities as well as the limitations of symbolic communication through dress in early modern Florence. In addition to outward style, these subtle symbols helped to establish and renegotiate their bearer’s position in the shifting hierarchy of an uncertain political climate. By closely examining Tornabuoni commissions, the thesis demonstrates how clothing is a critical means of understanding social motivations and aspirations.

Full textThe purpose of this thesis was to examine the relationship between feelings and visualizations of climate change. A case study was done on visualizations of climate change from a web page concerning climate change published by the Swedish newspaper Expressen and from the American photographer Gary Braasch’s web page “World view of global warming”. The thesis is based on the article ”Emotional anchoring and objectification in the media reporting on climate change” by Birgitta Höijer. I have been aiming to understand the feelings of fear, hope, guilt, compassion and nostalgia through semiotic theories of icon, index and symbol.
Previous research has proven the difficulties in bringing the issue of climate change up on the public agenda – which is connected to the difficulties of visualizing climate change. The nature of climate change being slow and hard to spot on an individual level has been highlighted as a cause of both of these difficulties. Pictures and photos have in this thesis been seen as the “interface” between science and the public – and hence decoders of the science of climate change. Höijer’s article about feelings has been used to understand this process of decoding.
The results show that the analyzed material could be linked to and described by the semiotic theories of icon, index and symbol. The emotional anchoring found in the material and the semiotic application have been shown to work complementarily with each other, leading to a broader understanding of the material’s relationship to social cognitions. The results further demonstrated that context is essential in some of the analyzed visualizations of climate change. Generic pictures found in the material could have been regarded as icon, index or symbol of other messages – but is through its contexts anchored with feelings, and becomes visualizations of climate change. The analysis also suggests that if icons of nature could be connected with feelings – so could nature itself. The consequences are speculated to lead to objectification of nature and ecophobia. By objectifying nature and using generic pictures, the material’s relationship to the concepts of “truth” and “myth” is questioned.
In conclusion, understanding of the analyzed material is advantageously achieved through complementary use of Höijers emotional categories and the semiotic theories of icon, index and symbol.

Full textThis essay does, with the help of Erwin Panofsky’s iconological method, provide an analysis of a series of nineteen portraits of famous men of the 17th century. These portraits, which today are placed in the library of Skokloster castle, are analysed in their iconography, and placed in a larger iconographic context. The portraits all have unique appearances, since they are painted on pine panel and then sawed after the contour of the head of the portrayed. The aim with the essay is to understand purpose and origin of the portraits. The essay deals with questions such as why these portraits were chosen to be made, and if a connection exists between these works and library art in a bigger context. Who is being portrayed, why these people in particular, and who has taken the initiative of making the portraits are questions that are investigated as well. It is an essay that to a large extent treats the noble ideal of the 17th century, and how it gave its expression to art.

Full textSummary This study deals with the hairstyles of women in Greek antiquity. Although they are not that different from modern hairstyles, they attract our attention as they are numerous and have definitely changed in the course of time. The striking types that existed can be traced in numerous artifacts and monuments. For a better understanding of them, they are conveniently categorized in four main types, which accounts for the division of the study in four main chapters: the wreath-like coiffure, the pony-tail, the bow-knot and the melon-coiffure. Chronologically they range from the 5th century B. C. into late Hellenistic times. For the purposes of an accurate positioning in time each chapter was divided into three large sections: coins, reliefs and plastic in the round. The coins offer the necessary terminus post quem which is confirmed by the large scale art. Interestingly, all the hair styles mentioned above are deeply rooted in the Classical and late Classical tradition. Latest among them is the melon-coiffure, whose beginnings should be placed a little after the middle of the 4th century. The earliest is the wreath-like coiffure that can be traced back to the Severe Style. The overall examination of the archaeological evidence offers insights into possible meanings. The iconography, the function and the context of the figures are in the focus of investigation and form the tools for the understanding of the coiffures as social identification marcs. The nature of this study is thus art historical, archaeological and methodological. Whereas it is for example true that the wreath-like hairstyle swept up from the forehead that bouncy frames the face was conveniently worn without distinction by young and old, by unmarried and married women, it should be noted that hairstyles have from a very early time played an ingenious role in order to differentiate young girls of marriageable status. These luxurious and festival hair styles morphologically have the following features in common: the abundance of hair growth, the accentuation of the forehead, the plaits. Eirene of Kephisodot demonstrates nicely the phenomenon of the invention of a new hairstyle for a youthful goddess that for the needs of cult practice was meant to be perceived as such. The long braid at the nape of the neck was used for goddesses and mortal women alike. But the accent is placed on the status of the unmarried girl. Although the examples are numerous and range from early Classical to Late Hellenistic Times, prominently among them figure the Korai of the Erechtheion. The pony tail appears since the late 4th century not only for youthful goddesses like Nymphs, Nike and Artemis, but also for small girls – still children – and women in marriageable age. The bow knot and the melon coiffure should be thought of as the result of the continuously growing representation of women in the public sphere during the 4th century B. C. The late Classical period marks a turning point for the female Greek portraiture. Girls of marriageable age from renowned families are publicly recognized through votives and grave statues. Gestures, pose, costume, coiffure no less than inscriptions offer the young individuals an exclusive iconography. The bow knot coiffure is adequately appreciated early enough for young goddesses. But it would become famous as the typical hairstyle of Aphrodite in Hellenistic times. The melon-coiffure makes its appearance primarily as a portrait hair style in honorific or grave representation but also with representations of young goddesses. But the culmination is to be found in the Ptolemaic portraiture of the 3rd century B. C., when the melon coiffure will function as communicator of ideological and propagandistic messages. The present study also offers new insights on the question of the ancient terminology. So the assumption that “Krobylos” is to be associated with the typically Aphrodite and Apollon hairstyle is seriously questioned. The first meaning of the name was a man’s hairstyle that at the time of Thucydides and Aristophanes was already considered old-fashioned. In late Classical and Hellenistic times it was generically used to designate the knot. The distinctive melon-coiffure is here tentatively associated with the “διάκρισις” of the ancient texts. The controversial and exciting body of evidence allows a text that deals with the many parameters of the ancient iconography, using the dominant frameworks of contextual analysis of archaeological thought. It is a history of taste for some aspects of the Greek antiquity and for the reader who is more familiar with the art of Roman times it offers an important body of evidence for the beginnings of morphological phenomena and tastes of the Roman Empire
