Abstract:
Voronca geban in romania with elegiac post-symbolist verses but quickly joined the avant-garde, becoming one of its greatest theoreticians, inventing "pictopoetry" and advancing the cause of "integralism". In france, his poetry continued and deepened the humanistic leaps of his last romanian verse, and opened itself generously to the rest of mankind, announcing the coming of a better world. His main themes are nature, the city, solitude and fraternisation, love, and woman - trhough poems in which memory and dream hold an important place. His entire poetic activity may be seen as an attempt to escape from solitude

Abstract:
Our thesis studies the landscape and the poetic image at Ilarie Voronca, Benjamin Fondane and Henri Michaux, by following the common thematic elements and the artistic specificities of those writers from the perspective of the comparative literature. The first part of our thesis, "Composition / decomposition of the self by the image" presents the distinctive features of the self (changeable, multiple) and its influence on the poetic images. The self is ambiguous and its discontinuity transmits to the text a tension which reaches its maximum when associated with the emptiness. The second part "The eternal and impossible voyage" concerns the numerous values of the movement which governs the constant change of the poetic landscape, the motivations of the choices related to the voyage and the evolution of the imagination according to this topic. We also study the relation voyage-life-text and some figures of representative travellers for the texts of the three authors - Plume, Robinson, Ulysses. The voyage is made in different regions of the real and the imaginary world, with temporary incursions into the memory and it appears in various forms, as the escape, the simple discovery or the adventure. The third part, “Ways of living, ways of looking at” approaches the problem of the image in a more theoretical way, with the analysis of several related terms and their impact on the texts. A fundamental relationship is the one established between the landscape and the space, at the physical and psychic levels. The glance becomes a creative agent of the literary text, functioning as an organ of perception and as a genuine aesthetic filter

Artois, 2002. http://www.theses.fr/2002ARTO0002.

Full text
Abstract:
Tristan Tzara, Benjamin Fondane and Ilarie Voronca are three Romanian poets belonging to the avant-garde of the first half of the 20th century. They all choose France as a place to live in and French as language of their work which they had started in Romania and in Romanian. This ‘route' from Bucharest to Paris, though willingly taken by these three poets, was still to remain an ‘exile' that left its imprints on their writing in French. This ‘route' thus becomes a recurrent image throughout their work revealing itself at various levels, starting with the casual to the complex aspects of the imaginary, including the emotional resonance and the existential questions. Thus for these poets the ‘route' as a recurrent image acquires a primordial meaning, which generates a whole network of motifs, of themes and of metaphysical and poetical questions that can be deciphered by means of the very key which seems to have become the ‘route' for these Romanian poets writing in French. In their poetical creation there are certain characteristic imaginary ‘patterns' revealed in verbal ‘patterns'. Thes ‘patterns' are regrouped around dynamic appeals which man may choose to acquiesce or to deny: the horizontal trajectory (walk, escape, roaming, departure, passage, flux, rush, progress), the circular movement (rotation, turn, search for the center or for the completeness of the circumference), the vertical ‘itinerary' (ascension, bounce, fall) and the temptation of coming to a slow-down or to a complete cessation of movement (sloth, sluggishness, feebleness, gauntness, rigidity, drowsiness). These verbal ‘patterns' are accompanied with a whole range of myths, symbols and archetypes liable to reveal the relationships between these poets and the basic meanings of the route, such as Ulysses, the errant Jew, the river, the tree, the fire, the search for home. Thus the ‘route' reveals itself as a primordial reality to Tristan Tzara, Benjamin Fondane and Ilarie Voronca, as it lies at their formation as both man and poets. Their writing in French therefore changes their completed journey into a metaphysical itinerary and a quest for poetry

Gonzalez, Roger Oriol. "iLatin jazz! : a syncretic journey from Spain, Cuba, the United States and back." Queensland University of Technology, 2009. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/29931/.

Full text
Abstract:
The creative work, ¡Latin Jazz! is a 50 minute radio documentary to be broadcast on ABC Classic FM. It looks at the evolution of Latin jazz from Spain, Cuba and the United States. It examines the social effects on the style and specifically on the syncretic movement between the countries. The documentary traces my travel to Madrid, Spain and looks at Latin jazz through a deconstruction of the style, musical examples and interviews with prominent artists. Artists interviewed were Chano Domínguez, a Spanish flamenco jazz pianist, Bobby Martínez an American saxophonist, Alain Pérez a Cuban bassist and Pepe Rivero a Cuban pianist. The exegesis supports the radio documentary by examining the style in more depth, and is broken into three main sections. First it traces the historical relationship that occurred through the Ida y Vuelta (To and Fro), the similarities and influences through the habanera, the decíma and the religion of Santería. This is followed by specific musical elements within Latin jazz such as instrumentation, clave, harmony and improvisation, whilst the third section looks at the influences of the new syncretic movement back to Spain.

In Electrical Engineering courses, it is important that students have hands-on experience with a circuit and components to witness their behavior and compare it with theoretical models. The MIT iLab Project develops online laboratories that allow students to perform experiments through a web browser from anywhere in the world. One such lab used in the Introduction to Circuits class, the NMOS Resistor Amplifier Lab, allows students to analyze the switching waveforms of a transistor. This thesis describes the integration of a thermal camera to the NMOS-Resistor Amplifier Lab to educate students about energy dissipation. The first version of this lab, built entirely in LabVIEW, on iLabs' existing Shared Architecture could not support an interactive lightweight client. In response, the Experimental Lab Server Architecture (ELSA) was developed as a new interface connecting an experiment, client, and Service Broker. In the first prototype of the Thermal Lab in ELSA, a Java Applet Client uses REST calls to send commands and acquire data from the LabVIEW experiment running on the server.

Loubser, Susan Ilani. "Analysis and interpretation of astrophysical optical emission-line spectra / Susan Ilani Loubser." Thesis, North-West University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/84.

Full text
Abstract:
This study consists of a quantitative optical emission-line analysis of spectra from five blue compact galaxies (Zw 0855, Mrk 1267, II Zw 33, Tol 2 & Tol 3), as well as a qualitative analysis of spectra from two galactic H II regions (NGC 3603 & NGC 3576). It serves a two-fold purpose: first, to understand the CCD reduction, spectra extraction and different nebular analysis methods, together with their applications and limitations, preparatory to studies using the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) and second, to extend current star formation related research to include extragalactic starburst galaxies. The observations were carried out using the 1.9m telescope (equipped with a grating spectroscope and CCD detector) of the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO), during the period 1 to 7 March 2005. The necessary CCD data reduction, spectra extraction, wavelength and flux calibration, Doppler shift as well as reddening correction procedures were performed before the emission lines were identified and measured. A full nebular analysis, including temperature, density, metallicity (oxygen abundance) and other chemical abundance determinations, was performed on the blue compact galaxies (BCGs). Two different nebular analysis packages viz. IRAF's nebular and SNAPwere used, with all the results well within the range of values expected for metal poor BCGs. Recommendations on the different methods and their applications are made.

Manley-King, Clarina Ilara. "The synthesis and evaluation of phthalimide analogues as inhibitors of monoamine oxidase B / Clarina Ilara Manley-King." Thesis, North-West University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/8506.

Full text
Abstract:
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a multifactorial neurodegenerative disease believed to be caused by a number of factors. This has made the successful treatment of the disease very difficult, as the underlying cause of degeneration is still unknown. Monoamine oxidase (MAO-B) inhibitors have been used in the treatment of PD. MAO-B is known to be involved in the catalytic oxidation of biogenic amines, a reaction which produces aldehydes and hydrogen peroxide as byproducts. Both these by-products can be toxic if not rapidly cleared. Inhibitors of MAO-B conserve the depleted supply of dopamine and also stoichiometrically decreases the amount of toxic by-products formed. Thus, MAO-B inhibitors may offer both symptomatic and neuroprotective effects that can aid in the treatment of PD. This study is part of the ongoing investigation into the development of new selective reversible inhibitors of MAO-B. Literature reports that isatin, a small, reversible, endogenous MAO inhibitor, found in the brain, can inhibit both MAO-A and MAO-B enzymes. Previous studies have shown that (E)-5-styrylisatin and (E)-6-styrylisatin are reversible inhibitors of human MAOA and -B. Both homologues are reported to exhibit selective binding to the MAO-B isoform with (E)-5-styrylisatin being the most potent inhibitor. To further investigate these structure–activity relationships (SAR), in the present study, additional C5- and C6-substituted isatin analogues were synthesized and evaluated as inhibitors of recombinant human MAO-A and MAO-B. A series of structurally related corresponding anilines, which are synthetic precursors in the synthesis of isatin derivatives, were also evaluated as MAO inhibitors. This study is part of an attempt to identify new inhibitors with enhanced potencies and specificities for both MAO-A or MAO-B. In general, C5- and C6-substitution of isatin leads to enhanced binding affinity to both MAO isozymes, compared to isatin, and in most instances result in selective binding to the MAO-B isoform. The most potent MAO-B inhibitor 5-(4-phenylbutyl)isatin, exhibited an IC50 value of 0.66 nM and the most potent MAO-A inhibitor was found to be 5-phenylisatin with an IC50 value of 562 nM. Crystallographic and modelling studies suggest that the isatin ring binds to the substrate cavities of MAO-A and -B and is stabilized by hydrogen bond interactions between the NH and the C2 carbonyl oxygen of the dioxoindolyl moiety and water molecules present in the substrate cavities of MAO-A and -B. Based on these observations and the close structural resemblance between isatin and its phthalimide isomer, a series of phthalimide analogues were synthesized and evaluated as MAO inhibitors. The results showed that the C5 substituted phthalimides were very potent competitive inhibitors with IC50 values ranging 0.007 to 2.5 μM for MAO-B and IC50 values ranging 0.22 to 9.0 μM for MAO-A. The 5-(4-benzyloxy)phthalimide was the most potent MAO-B inhibitor in the phthalimide series, with an IC50 value of 0.007 μM. The results of modelling studies showed that hydrogen-bond interactions between the phthalimide carbonyl oxygen and the enzyme amino acid residues and the integral water molecules are important for the binding of phthalimide to the active site of MAO-B. The potent competitive inhibition and activities of the C5 substituted phthalimide analogues towards MAO-B has led us to investigate a structurally similar series of C4-substituted phthalonitriles. A series of C4-substituted phthalonitriles were prepared and evaluated as inhibitors of MAO-B. In general, the phthalonitriles were very potent competitive inhibitors of MAO-B with IC50 values ranging from 0.005–6.02 μM. 5-(4-benzyloxy)phthalonitrile was found to be the most potent inhibitor for human MAO-B with an IC50 value of 0.005 μM. To further investigate the effect of the nitrile group in this class of compounds, C3 and C4 substituted benzonitriles were prepared and evaluated for MAO inhibition. The results showed that similar to the phthalonitriles, the benzonitriles were also potent inhibitors of human MAO-B, with IC50 values ranging from 0.785-1.39 μM. The benzonitriles, however, were not as potent as the corresponding phthalonitriles. These findings suggest that, although two nitrile groups are more optimal for inhibition, the presence of a second nitrile group is not a necessity for potent MAO-B inhibition. Placement of the nitrile group at C3 resulted in more potent MAO-B inhibition compared to placement of the nitrile at C4.

DiGirolamo, Antonietta Michelle. "An Investigation of the Effects of Mothers' Participation in Adult Literacy Classes on Interactive Literacy Activities (ILAs) at Home." FIU Digital Commons, 2009. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/285.

Full text
Abstract:
The National Center for Family Literacy (2003a) and the National Even Start Association (2005) have stated that the single most effective and influential factor in increasing student academic achievement is parental involvement. The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine how participation in adult literacy courses influences parent-child interaction in various educationally related activities known as Interactive Literacy Activities (ILAs). This study investigated ILAs from the mothers‟ perspective, and examines the changes that occur in parental involvement or ILAs when immigrant parents of a limited educational background participate in an adult education program. The principal method of data collection was key informant interviews (Gall, Borg, & Gall, 1996). Other methods of data collection included observations of parent-child interactions and field observations. Data analysis methods included Memo-ing (Miles & Huberman, 1994), within case analysis and cross-case analysis. Findings demonstrate that changes occurred in the parent-child relationship when mothers of a limited educational background participated in an adult literacy course. When participating in ILAs or English literacy activities related to second language acquisition (including reading and speaking for comprehension and pronunciation), the children of these mothers took on the role of the adult. Participation in literacy activities was often initiated by the child and the children were frequently concerned with their mother‟s literacy acquisition. Mothers reported that their children were more confident, worked harder on school related activities and were more open to communication. It can be concluded from this study that, in the case of these immigrant families, a mother‟s participation in adult literacy classes is influential in the relationship between mother and child. These children participated in ILAs for the benefit of their mothers and initiated literacy activities more frequently. The children responded better to their parents during literacy activities because there was a positive change in the relationship between mother and child. The relationship between mother and child appeared to be strengthened by greater trust, a sense of pride and more communication.

Abstract:

The Analysis of Ilan’s Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA) Patients Abstract The study uses Ilan’s out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients as the research object to understand the variable backgrounds of OHCA patients how they are affected by first aid factors between the period of pre-hospital and post-hospital admission. The study also discusses whether there is a correlation between first aid factors and first aid prognosis among those OHCA patients during pre-hospital and post-hospital admission periods. The study is retrospective and based on the Utstein style format. It collects 284 out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patient cases with trauma and non-trauma (282 effective samples) in an example of a regional teaching hospital in Ilan from 2007 to 2009. It uses descriptive statistics, independent sample t test, and Chi-Square test as the statistical analysis to obtain the following conclusions: 1. There are 282 effective sample patients in the study. There are 57 patients ( 20.2 %) who were return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) after cardiac arrest approximately 14.77 minutes on average. There are 33 patients (11.7 % ) who survived to be hospitalized for 15.36 days on average, and there are 6 patients ( 2.1 % ) who were discharged from the hospital. 2. Internal medicine disease is the major causative factor of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Among those internal medicine disease cases, the history showed hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and heart diseases are the main causes of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Patients who are older than 65 years old are the main age groups, accounting for 67.7% of these cases. 3. The pre-hospital admission factors which affect the prognosis after the Emergency Department (ED) are the place of the accident, whether there are witnesses, scene process time , total reaction time , whether automatic external defibrillation was used, and whether people at the scene used CPR. 4. The post-hospital admission factors which affect the prognosis after the ED are initial cardiac rhythm, body temperature, pupil size , dose of epinephrine, whether defibrillation was used, the time of applying emergency first-aid, and medical expense. 5. The percentages of return of spontaneous circulation and survival rates in the study are lower than those of past studies of Taipei City and National Taiwan University Hospital. The possible factors are probably related to differences between rural and urban areas in the quality of emergency medical service systems (EMSS), and healthcare training. 6. From now on, in addition to improving the first-aid continuous monitoring system, we should also enhance EMT related training, and actively educate people to understand and learn CPR, so that comprehensive first-aid systems are available everywhere to effectively increase the success rate of first-aid.
