Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper reviews the current challenges facing Mauritius in terms of meeting peak electricity demand. As a fast-developing island-economy with a very high population density, this is a crucial issue. The more so that it imports 80% of its energy requirements in terms of fossil fuels, relies significantly on tourism and needs to protect its fragile ecosystems. The nature of the peak electricity demand and its evolution is firstly analysed. Reference is made to past scenarios for electricity supply, the obstacles to their implementation and their relevance in terms of sustainability. The forecasts underpinning the latter scenarios are found to be over-estimated. Demand-Side Management projects are discussed and their potential to promote an alternative scenario based on revised forecasts are discussed. Hence a new Maurice Ile Durable (Mauritius Sustainable Island, MID) scenario is proposed in view of stabilising the peak demand, reducing the rate of increase of total electricity demand and making the capacity margin positive. The newly-devised scenario is not only more sustainable but also addresses several political and socio-economic issues to bring holistic win-win solutions. Institutional and regulatory reforms as well as a relevant Business Framework are also important in order to meet the challenges of MID. The new scenario relies only on existing technology with an excellent track-record and provides the transition to a more sustainable future.

Osman, Shafick. "La géopolitique de la République de Maurice." Thesis, Paris 4, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA040240.

Abstract:
Africaine politiquement, Maurice s’oriente économiquement vers l’Asie
The work is a ‘snapshot’ of the geopolitics of the Republic of Mauritius with a two-pronged approach: The Internal Geopolitics and the External Geopolitics of the country. The analysis made is from facts mainly reported in the Mauritian press, so rich in diversity and comments. Going down the historical depth to try to explain the present, it is the first work of analysis and reflection on the geopolitics of the young Mauritian republic. The complexity of the relationships between the different territories (Rodrigues and Agalega) with Mauritius Island is explained, as well as the relationships and ambiguous positions with Great Britain (and the United States) and France on the issues of the Chagos Archipelago and Tromelin respectively. The tense relationships between the different communities present in Mauritius are exposed, as well as the controversial issue of land conversion -often agricultural land- to luxury residences for wealthy foreigners and ambitious real estate projects. The ‘neutral’ foreign policy of Mauritius, so unique, is also examined in the context of its External Geopolitics, as well as its multiple belongings to regional organisations in the Indian Ocean and in Africa. Known abroad for its ‘economic success’, Mauritius aspires to become the regional hub of all possible things and it has positioned itself to be the financial gateway between Africa and Asia. Having ‘umbilical’ links with India, Mauritius has remained however pro-western with an impressive Francophone boost and a decline of the British influence. Politically African, Mauritius is now economically oriented towards Asia

Abstract:

Abstract:
Depression is among the most common psychopathology for which treatment is sought in psychological and psychiatric practices and its impact at all levels including its economical outlay in the coming years has been estimated on a worldwide scale to surpass that of current illnesses such as infectious diseases and cardiovascular illnesses. Research has demonstrated that stress and anxiety levels, as early as in adolescence, are among factors that contribute to the development of depression. The aim of this research study is therefore to investigate the psychometric properties of the French Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21; Lovibond & Lovibond, 1995) for its eventual use in the Mauritian adolescent population as a means to screen for depression, anxiety, and stress. Factor analyses were conducted on 1002 response sets and the three-factor structure of the DASS-21 was supported. Internal consistency was satisfactory and the scales demonstrated concurrent validity with other measures of depression, anxiety and stress. The construct validity of the scales was further strengthened with gender invariance. Finally, appraisal of stress was the psychological dimension which predicted best depression in the Mauritian adolescent population

Carta, Nirmala.

Full text
Abstract:
The identity construction of the adolescent is influenced by his living context; in the case of Mauritius, this context is caracterised by the official presence of categorization of communities. This presence induces mauritians to have the obligation to identify themselves to one of the four prescribed communities, which leads to a problematic identity construction, particularly for adolescents as they are in a developmental period which is determinant. As from the study of mauritians reaching the end of adolescents, we have measured the degree of influence of the multicultural context on the identity construction. Our methodology has allowed us to notice the presence of communalism as from the stage of pretest and it has been confirmed in the quantitative as well as the qualitative analysis. We have been able to prove that an overreacted communalism leads to a high social identity, leading in counterpart to less importance regarding the personal part of identity. In fact, our results indicate that the existence of communities contributes in making our participants prefer the community to which they belong and they have negative stereotypes towards other communities. In addition to this, we have found that belonging to a community is directly linked to social identity, which is essentially comprised of religious belonging, physical appearance and social class. Furthermore, we have noticed that our participants have an intercultural inner living which is opposed to the prescribed social identity. We arrive to the conclusion that the official existence of communities in Mauritius should be reviewed, based on the results of our research and we propose more implications in intercultural education and towards the promotion of personal identity

Chadee, Bibi Zareen. Thesis, Paris 5, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA05D002.

Full text
Abstract:
The term offshore is commonly used to refer to the establishment of a legal entity in a country where it has no business. For this implementation, this entity can entain certain tax benefits. But this tax optimization mechanism can be bypassed illegally. Many offshore jurisdictions were then blamed for their lack of transparency and held for tax evasion. Among these offshore financial centers, Mauritius differs from other financial markets as it strives to meet international standards while continuing to develop its offshore sector. Thus, the interest of this thesis is to present the characteristics of each offshore entity and its operations in order to understand how they can be diverted from their original purpose. This presentation is an analysis of each offshore entities, their operations and their regulation. We can found that the Mauritian juridiction is unfairly labeled as tax havens and face the same risks as the largest offshore places. Mauritius has thus reconcile its interests by finding a balance between the economic exploitation of its offshore sector and the strict application of international standards

Abstract:
This research work aimed at using sociological neo institutionalism and its key concepts, institutional logics, and institutional work to understand the work undertaken by actors in an agricultural value chain. We have chosen the Mauritian vegetable value chain, in the context of an institutional change, as a field of study to apply the theoretical concepts. An exploratory study was carried out to validate the theoretical framework selected. Thematic content analysis allowed us to identify the institutional logics of the vegetable value chain as well as the different types and forms of institutional work undertaken by the incumbent and new actors. This research work allows us to conclude that the use of the concept of institutional work to understand the dynamics of an agricultural value chain is important as the sociological lens enables researchers to better understand actors' behavior in a value chain.Key words: sociological neo institutionalism, institutional logics, and institutional, agricultural value chain, thematic analysis, qualitative comparative analysis

Abstract:
In this article, Mattia Merlini and Stefano Maria Nicoletti ask themselves if machines ever take our place in the creation of art, and particularly music. Despite the outstanding results of some well-known Ais, the authors argue that machines present some intrinsic limits in creative contexts. In particular, their attention focuses on what they call the »body issue«, i.e. the role of the body in the experience and creation of music, grounded in contemporary findings in neuroscience, especially on embodied cognition, and also on the theories of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Roland Barthes.

Abstract:
AbstractThe paper investigates the phenomenon of vitalism through the lens of vital normativity as expounded by Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Georges Canguilhem. I argue that the two authors independently developed complementary critiques of the mechanical-behaviourist conception of life sciences, which culminated in a surprisingly similar notion of life construed as a normative (polarized) activity, i.e., an activity that is not indifferent to its own conditions of possibility. Such an alternative conception of life has far-reaching consequences for the epistemology of life sciences, for it requires it to reconsider not only its object of inquiry - the nature of (the relationship between) an organism and its environment -, but also, since scientists themselves are living beings, the nature of its epistemic practices. What I call the truth of (a specific variety of) vitalism is thus reflected not only in how life is cognized, but also in how life cognizes (itself). This last point is of particular philosophical importance, as it paves the way towards a more dynamic conception of reflection (tentatively called ouroboric thought), which takes seriously that we, as cognizers of life, at the same time live the lives of cognizers.

Abstract:
Maurice Warwick Beresford (1920–2005), a Fellow of the British Academy, was an economic and social historian born in Sutton Coldfield, Warwickshire to Harry Bertram Beresford and Nora Elizabeth Jefferies. He was ill at ease in the social fabric of Jesus College in the late 1930s. Still, Beresford flourished academically under the guidance of an understanding Tutor, Bernard Manning, and a supportive Director of Studies, Charles Wilson. Social work of various kinds was to remain a major interest throughout his life. In the autumn of 1942, Beresford moved to Rugby to take up a residential post as Sub-Warden (and later Warden, 1943–1948) of the Percival Guildhouse, an adult education centre. By early 1946, he had applied for posts in history at Glasgow and economic history at Nottingham. While settling in at the University of Leeds in 1948, several papers resulting from his archival and fieldwork in the midlands were published. But before moving to Leeds, Beresford trespassed into archaeology for the first time. Beresford retired from Leeds in 1985.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter documents the early life of Emily Davies, from her birth in 1830 through to her late twenties, when she was still the living-at-home daughter of a now elderly evangelical clergyman in the industrial north-east of England, intellectually voracious but apparently unaware of any kind of women’s movement. The most significant event in her life in this period was becoming close friends with three other young women: Jane and Annie Crow and, through them, Elizabeth Garrett, who would herself become a leading figure in the women’s movement. The chapter also focuses on two of Davies’s relations. Her father, John Davies, was a strict evangelical and thwarted intellectual, a maverick who courted controversy and suffered from perennial ill health. Her oldest brother, John Llewelyn Davies, also a clergyman, was an eminent Cambridge scholar, a Christian Socialist follower of F. D. Maurice, and a prominent member of the liberal broad church intelligentsia.

Abstract:
The fable seems to be the last frontier in the narration of the unspeakable, using irony, parody, allegory, the grotesque. Without renouncing the attributes of the genre of the fable – opposition between two characters/animals placed in a state of social inequality, ethical and educational purpose –, some authors such as Uruguayan Mauricio Rosencof and Chilean Anibal Quijada, both victims of the dictatorships of their respective countries, together with traditional forms of writing of testimony and denunciation have used the genre of the fable with added value of strong political content.

Abstract:
GALICIA AND VOLHYNIA IN JEWISH FILMS MADE IN AUSTRIA During her performances in Galicia, Molly Picon, an American Jewish actress, became acquainted with the world of Eastern Orthodoxy. It turned out to be an excellent topic for a film. The comic film East and West (1923; Polish title Wschod i Zachod, Yiddish title Mizrekh un mayrev) ponders on rigid adherence to religious traditions, suggesting that allegiance to one’s natal religion does not preclude openness to other faith traditions. The drama Jiskor (1924), based on the play by Harry Sackler, takes place in Volhynia in the 18th century. It is a story of an upstanding Jew who, despite repeated temptation, refuses to renounce his principles, with tragic results. The film includes Maurice Schwartz’s band, on tour in Europe at the time. Both films, directed by Sydney M. Goldin, observe the close-knit nature of the Galician shtetl and the life of Jews in magnate estates. For the contemporary Polish audience, the most interesting aspect of both films is the depiction of the sociopolitical status of Jews vis-a-vis Poles in the mid-1920s (i.e., the nature of Jewish life, political awareness of Jews, issues of dignity, and anti-Semitism).

Abstract:
Marta Portal defines the Mexican Revolution as “a blast of reality”. The event follows an historical process, one with strong social and symbolical implications. Referring to the novels of the Mexican Revolution, Marta Portal also states: “they try to unveil and remake the world to other perspectives by denouncing the lies and the alienation of human relationships”. This articles only reviews four literary samples of that reality: Los de abajo, by Mariano Anzuela; El águila y la serpiente, a novel by Luis Martín Guzmán; El resplandor, by Mauricio Magdaleno; and Los conspiradores by Jorge Ibargüengoitia, an ironic account about the conspiracy lead by Hidalgo under the cry ‘Ajetreo’, the first revolutionary expression born under the threat of social and political resentment in colonial Mexico, against of the Metropolis.

Abstract:
Feedback is one of the key factors in students’ success (Hattie and Timperley, 2007). It is essential in order for them to maintain or increase their level of competence (Brookhart, 2010). But do students understand the feedback provided by their teachers? Does feedback allow students to learn and to improve their work? For the purpose of augmenting feedback effectiveness in our hybrid writing courses at the university, we created the feedback-dialogue, a method consisting in interacting with the student within its text, using the comment function of the word processor. Unlike traditional feedback, the feedback-dialogue is bi-directional, i.e. the student must not only revise its text but also respond to the teacher’s comments. To measure the effectiveness of the feedback-dialogue, we designed a two-step methodology. First, students’ perceptions of the effectiveness of feedback-dialogue were collected in a self-reported questionnaire. The items in the questionnaire were formulated from an analysis of different typologies in relevant studies (Anson, 2015; Grigoryan, 2017; Mauri et al., 2016). Second, the students’ responses to their teacher’s comments were analyzed, as well as the modifications they made during the revision of their texts.
