Full textAs a prototypical form of verbal interaction, conversation is mainly based on non literal meanings. The problem at issue focuses on the link between the speaker and a certain type of non literal speech act: the conversational implicatures: the theory of illocutionary commitment (Daniel Vanderveken, 1985). Born of the philosophy of language, provides concepts which allow to make this question operational. An experience, based on these notions and on a criterion of incoherence of a speaker who denies the non literal speech act concerned, produces significant results on the speaker's commitment to these conversational implicatures, to the more precise, the gradual aspect of this commitment is put forward. More generally, this work contributes to a set of studies aimed to use notions of speech acts' theory in discourse analysis

Full textThe thesis deals with 14 modal particles occurring in imperative sentences and or other forms of requests in german ("aber, auch, blob, doch, eben, einfach, halt, ja, mal, nur, ruhig, schon, vielleicht, wohl"). Criticizing some purely communicative approaches that split particles into several contextual variants we propose to seperate methodologically the semantic and pragmatic level of analysis. Hence, we distinghish between sentence meaning (propositional meaning and attitudinal meanings including the attitudinal meaning of the particle), illocutionary function of the corresponding utterance (based on and described according to the specific constellation of situative parameters of local interactional management) and strategic function (including parameters of the global interactional management). A semantic description of attitudinal meaning has been given to each particle. This invariant meaning underlies the various illocutionary functions and communicative nuances conveyed by modal particles

Full textThis thesis is a contribution to and partial realization of a bilingual frenchgerman german-french linguistically determined dictionary of a set of words that have "communicative" value. The thesis is devoted to a linguistic study and a lexicographical treatment of a set of words which linguists term modal or illocutionary particules. There are four sections which illustrate the process whereby a dictionary of particles can be developped. In the first section the group of words in question is delimited and specified. Twenty-three words are considered in all : aber, auch, bloss, denn, doch, eben, einfach, einmal (mal), erst, etwa, gar, gefalligst, gleich, halt, immer, ja, noch, nun mal, nur, ruhig, schon, vielleicht and wohl. The second section is devoted to the description of the bilingual dictionary and to the examination of the main problems that its realization posed, from a general viewpoint first, and secondly from the point of view of the treatment of the particles. In the third section, the particle doch is subjected to a thorough linguistic analysis and a detailed lexicographical treatment. Microstructures for several types of dictionaries (into and from german, general or specialized) are suggested. The final section consists of a specialized bilingual dictionary of the remainging 22 particles

Full textThis study is situated in the field of the theory of speech acts and deals with illocutionnary and argumentation in written Arabic. Illocution has been, since Austin, the privileged domain in linguistic researches. We will consider the importance of the term by trying to analyse a fragment of text in an illocutionnary approach. As far as the argumentation is concerned, we will adopt both Ducrot and his collegues' hypotheses concerning this point so that we can be able to study argumentatively the occurrences of "lakin(na)" in our corpus

Full textHow to describe and explain, by linguistic means, numerous speech events revolving around the term(s) "allusion / hint" ? In fact, the traditional rhetorical vision does not include the allusive acts of “everyday discourse". This study proposes to distinguish a special profile of "illocutionary manipulation" for the indirect speech acts uttered in a manner of suggesting or insinuating. The position of such utterances hesitates between accidental connotation and deliberate implication, and this uncertainty, intended by the speaker, is the sense of the "manipulation" in a speech act. The thesis also proposes a model of allusive utterance, which refers to a polemical topos (a "pretext") and expresses an illocutionary tension, especially in a manipulative manner (I0 and/or I1). A corpus-based study analyses the linguistic aspects of the illocutionary manipulations in political discourse

Full textThis research aims to propose a unified conception of poetic modality, whether it appears in verse or prose texts. The approach followed belongs to pragmatics. Renouncing the generic category of poetry, this study redefines poeticity by means of the notion of effects, which our investigation proposes to define. We first show limits and problems of some notions used in (post-)Jakobsonian, enunciative and evocative approaches, then we specify our hypotheses by conducting corpus analyses on Michaux and Roubaud texts. From this first step of our investigation, it appears that the poetic effects are accompanied by parallel interpretative paths of different status. To propose a linguistic formulation of these phenomena, we develop arguments justifying the choice of speech acts theory as a general descriptive framework. Re-examined into this conceptual framework, the gathered data allow us to define poetic effects as anticipated perlocutionary effects, concomitant to the main illocutionary act. Finally, through a series of corpus studies covering a wide range of language facts, we evaluate the robustness of our definition: syntactic phenomena (parallelisms), enunciative (polyphony, values of present simple) or textual (allegory) facts are thereby examined. These analyses confirm the plausibility of our explanation. In addition, our hypotheses about poeticity take into account its manifestations in contemporary poems and some kinds of novels

Full textThis thesis fits into the general framework of descriptive linguistics. The thesis focuses on the colloquial Spanish used in Chile, through the affects expressed by the Chilean speakers. Our hypothesis is that Chilean Spanish is defined on the basis of affects, and linguistically, the expression of these affects is observed in various phenomena, from a simple morpheme to a complex phrase structure. In order to consider the linguistic expression of affects from a broader perspective, this research aims to study four clearly differentiated phenomena: the –it suffix as it is used within the Chilean linguistic community, the oriented paronomasia, phraseological deautomatization of verbal and adverbial phrases, and the illocutionary particle poh.Our methodology involves the removal of a number of consistent examples to illustrate the phenomena chosen from 103 copies of the Chilean newspaper La Cuarta (examples collected between 2010 and 2011). Similarly, we have extracted a selection of examples of recordings of conversations conducted with 58 Chilean speakers. The four linguistic phenomena focused upon have been studied from the concept of affectivity proposed by Bally (1965 [1913]), who distinguishes the principles of intensity and value (1951 [1909]).The study of the affectivity of the –it suffix in the Chilean context, has revealed that the affectivity is a property that operates in two dimensions. It is, firstly, intrinsic to a linguistic sign - lexical base, –it suffix and other convergent linguistic elements in the speech - and on the other hand, extrinsic, as it refers to cultural or ideological elements. In other words, everything that is extralinguistic. With respect to the "oriented paronomasia" (a term we put forward), we found that affectivity is the main feature of this type of paronomasia and that their use is essentially based on the form of the joke, this is due to the common characteristics that we found: the recreational function, the comic intent and surprise. The oriented paronomasia, which participates in the phonetic, morphological, lexical and semantic levels, constitutes for us a linguistic derivative transaction in which two simple or complex lexemes that are replaced by one another inside a sentence, share phonetic properties, even though the semantic content of these diverges.Concerning the deautomatization of verbal and adverbial phrases, it is revealed that the manipulation phraseology is a natural linguistic activity that appeals to the constant figurative relationship between the words, allowing one to create other ways in which to express and update the use of terms already in existence. The evolution of fixed phrases undergoes a process of transformation desired by speakers to the detriment of given phraseological or syntactic rules. However, the interest of neological creation intervenes when the speaker is able to create and recreate new linguistic structures.Regarding the illocutory particle poh, it is a linguistic particle, primarily oral, that derives from the connector 'pues' (Oroz, 1966), whose original form has been absorbed by phonetic attrition. We have managed to demonstrate that poh helps the progression of communication, favouring the coherence and cohesion between the statement and the text. Also, through the use of poh, a consensual agreement is established between the speakers and, from this agreement, arise pragmatic-affective functions

Full textThis thesis studies the phonostylistical analysis of Mr. Dominique de Villepin's political oral discourse. A study which requires several of his vocal style in his different oral speeches in a way that allows us to analyze the discourse and prosodic elements throughout his political speeches. The study will focus on the dual coding (linguistic and paralinguistic) hidden behind his political purposes. The corpus of study is the set of samples taken from his different speeches: debate, conference, interviews. This study also rises to explain his discursive and communicative competence which is manifested by using linguistic, prosodic and discursive units in order to disclose the praxeological role of social practices, political roles and the role of experience in his speeches. Concerning the discursive level, the present study aims to analyze the pragmatic elements such as the tour of speech and verbal and persuasive effects. Concerning the phonostylistical level, several of phonostylistic phenomena which have prosodic values (intonation, melody, accent and pause) are analyzed under the Praat software to identify different pragmatic and enunciative roles in terms of persuasive strategy of this political man. The thesis is to demonstrate the role of prosodic phenomena in the establishment of new information, capable of transmitting a second vocal message to his audience. This phonostylistical message, which supports the first message carried through discursive illocutionary forces, adds to the style of Dominique de Villepin a new method to influence and persuade the public audience

Full textThe research presented in this dissertation analyzes the acquisition of German modal particles by beginner-level learners. This project seeks firstly to ascertain if introducing the particles early and explicitly into the German-as-a-foreign-language can help learners to understand and use them more effectively. Secondly, it attempts to determine whether learners’ mother tongue influences the acquisition process of German modal particles. The first chapter sets the conceptual background, retracing the concepts in linguistics and language didactics that are fundamental to this study: Contrastive Linguistics, Corpus Linguistics, and Speech Acts Theory, as well as Foreign Language Teaching Methods and Approaches. It also presents the corpus of young peoples’ spoken German collected specifically for the didactic purposes of this dissertation. The second chapter analyzes the different methods of teaching modal particles put forward in textbooks and grammar books, as well as in dictionaries and exercise books devoted to the subject. Following this review, I propose my own approach based on two innovative teaching tools: recordings from my corpus of spoken German, and bilingual tables with comments in German, French or Russian on how German modal particles function. The third chapter describes the implementation of my method by presenting the results from an experiment of teaching German-as-a-foreign-language to French-, Russian- and Chinese-speaking learners. The thesis ends with methodological recommendations for teaching German modal particles
