In the article the author analyses a set of incunabula from the collection of the Raczyński Library in Poznań, characterised by a uniformity of illuminated initials. Formal features of the initials point to the so-called Koberger type developed by illuminators collaborating with the famous Nuremberg printer Anton Koberger. The Koberger initials, which have been studied by very few German scholars, are characterised by stems filled with colourful acanthus leaves or gold plates. The letters are presented on an ornamental fleuronné or golden background. They are usually surrounded by characteristic

AbstractImage segmentation is a key process in analyzing biological images. However, it is difficult to detect the differences between foreground and background when the image is unevenly illuminated. The unambiguous segmenting of multi-well plate microscopy images with various uneven illuminations is a challenging problem. Currently, no publicly available method adequately solves these various problems in bright-field multi-well plate images. Here, we propose a new method based on contrast values which removes the need for illumination correction. The presented method is effective enough to d

A variation on the classical polygon illumination problem was introduced in [Aichholzer et al. EuroCG’09]. A point in the interior of a polygon is “illuminated” by a [Formula: see text]-modem if the line segment joining them intersects at most [Formula: see text] edges of the polygon. The experimental variables for the 6 conditions were: (1) two illuminations of the room wall and (2) three illumination levels in the area directly ahead of the operator. With directionally illuminated autostereoscopy, the separation of the illumination channel from the image channel provides extra flexibility in optimizing the performance of autostereoscopy. The paper summarises the decoration of Venetian incunabula from 1469-1500. In the early 1470s, illuminators experimented with schemes for ‘finishing’ the printed books, decorating the margins and spaces left blank for initials. The high numbers of hand-illuminated volumes indicate that numerous miniaturists must have come to Venice for this work. In the later 1470s and 1480s, incunabula continued to be illuminated, but greater numbers of each edition were printed, so the proportion that were decorated was lower. In the 1490s, miniaturists designed woodcuts that were printed with every copy of

This study evaluates the visual performance of four intersection lighting designs and five midblock crosswalk lighting designs along with two pedestrian safety countermeasures (rectangular rapid flashing beacons and flashing signs) at three light levels. The study involved a pedestrian detection task, which was completed at night on a realistic roadway intersection and a midblock crosswalk. The results from the study showed that driver nighttime visual performance at intersection and midblock crosswalks was influenced by the lighting design and light level. Intersections should be illuminated

Abstract:
Flow cytometry is an analytical technique that examines cells suspended in fluids. It uses a built-in laser beam to illuminate individual cells as the fluid passes through. The illumination causes fluorescence and scattered lights, which are emitted and reflected from the examining cell. These lights are split and filtered onto detectors and converted into electrical signals.
