Full textThe purpose of this study is to investigate whether it is possible to identify a lunar deity in Etruria. The attributes associated with the moon, in the classical sources, describe the astral nature and its influence on life and on human events. Its manifestations in the sky are often linked to both the measurement of time as well as activities of divination. The aim of the research is to identificate aspects of the cult associated with the word TIU, which means Moon: they are therefore excluded all the processes of "transfer" to other divine figures of some peculiarities of the greek Moon goddess. The approaches used in this study must converge to build a framework that shows the existence of an anthropomorphism or personification of the moon in Etruscan culture. There is “a lot of” moon in Etruria, but what it lacks is its personification. It 'obvious deficiency in anthropomorphism: although Tiu is a fine example of persistence in the historical period of the original notion of the divinity of nature, not very well determined from the iconic point of view. And the weakness of this process, belongs from Greece. The reasons for this lability, we can find elsewhere: Selene, perhaps too weak figure in archaic Greece, acquires consistency in the Hellenistic period, but when the process of anthropomorphism have already been already completed. The conclusion of this study is still positive. The case of the moon is also very instructive in its meanings / negative evidence because it makes us really understand how it worked this interesting and complex operation that brings in the Orientalizing and High archaism to the anthropomorphism of the Etruscan pantheon

Full textWith the conception of time as a guiding principle, the object of my research is the calendar, the paradigmatic (or calendrical) rites and the mythology of the Mixe Indians of Oaxaca, Mexico. My principal interest is to know the continuity of the pre-Hispanic Mixe religion in its nowadays, catholic, character. Some questions guide this research : which are the pre-Hispanic religious aspects (calendar, myths and rites) that have survived and why? Why have the rituals of the annual calendar been emptied of meaning? What have they become? What role has the non-adjustment of the calendar played? What is the real importance of the first and second solar passage in the zenith? The Holy Cross festival envelopes an ancient sowing festival, or does it only envelope the sowing? On the basis of the existence of the divinatory and annual calendar and a corpus of myths and some rituals, my initial hypothesis was that Mixe religion has survived very close to the pre-Hispanic sources and that she was very little influenced by Catholicism? This research shows that the biggest continuity is to be found in both the divinatory calendar and sacrifice as flexible systems that have learned to coexist with the official religion. The myths, real survivors from the past, are vehicles of an ideology strongly attached to the Mesoamerican thought, but they have lost their social and ritual meaning. Concerning the calendrical rites, Catholicism has been massively imposed, permitting little room for the contingent prolongation, not structural, as some specialist believe : because they are pragmatic and millenarian rites (sowing, harvest, sacrifice) that have never paid attention to the irritating complications of a ritual calendar without adjustment that kept on wandering off the year
Auyer, Jonathan P. "Illusion in the commonplace| Reinterpreting Ernst Gombrich's concept of illusion." Thesis, State University of New York at Albany, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3565358.
Full textIn the dissertation I analyze and interpret Ernst Gombrich's book Art and Illusion, focusing on his view that illusion is involved in pictorial representation. Since Gombrich never gave a concise, systematic account of illusion, my goal will be to fill this void by using the text of Art and Illusion as well as Gombrich's subsequent writings in order to present a coherent account of how illusion might play a role in a picture's representing an object.
My goal is not to present an unassailable account of pictorial representation. Instead, I offer a version of Gombrich's theory that pushes readers towards a better comprehension of what a Gombrichian theory of illusion involves. In the process I introduce and defend a number of terms and concepts in the service of filling in those places where Gombrich is silent. Among other things, in response to Gombrich's notion of visual substitution I elaborate upon the claims that representational pictures function as relational models and afford recognition of the objects they represent; I reply to Richard Wollheim's "twofoldness" objection to Gombrich; and I contend that Gombrich's use of the notion of illusion is not open to the objections commonly made against it (e.g., that normal picture perception does not involve illusion because "illusion" is synonymous with "delusion").

Full textStatistically, the image of the moon appears surprisingly often in the poetry of li po. In a body of work numbering over 1 000 poems, 340 of them employ this primary image. The object of my thesis is to examine and seek to understand the mysterious and profund attraction that must exist between this poet and the moon. After a close reading of each of li po's poems that speak of the moon, the scope of the thesis will expand to include representative poems of almost fifty other chinese poets, from the period shijing until the end of the tang, to explore the way the image of the moon appears and evolves in chinese poetry in general. This will be extremely helpful in comparing and isolating the particular qualities of li po's relationship with his goddess. In conclusion, i hope to show how li po captures et tames the moon, to make of it a precise and inspired image in his highly refined poetic art

Full textSince 1996, the semi-analytical solution of the orbital motion of the Moon has been fitting to LLR observations. The reduction of observations thanks to lunar orbital and libration models provides residuals roughly equal to 3 cm in rms. In the frame of the orbital motion of the Moon, a new solution for the planetary perturbations has been built during this PhD. The publication of a new solution for the motion of planets and progresses in numerical tools have contributed to improve the series of planetary perturbations. Comparisons to numerical integrations of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory have been performed. An improvement of the precision of the orbital motion by half an order is put into evidence over several decades as over thousands of years. Comparisons of the solution of the lunar motion to observations provide fitted numerical values of lunar and solar orbital parameters. That allows to link the different reference systems defined by the ICRS or induced by the CEP or the numerical integrations

Full textThis study proposes to establish if there might exist some influence of the moon on violent human comportments, whether they are levelled at other people (contraventions, crimes and delicts or sexual offences), or at oneself (suicides, self-inflicted injuries, mental disorders). The first part of it builds a process of empirical research aiming at discovering whether the phases of full moon and new moon lead to some specific violence, either quantitative or qualitative. It draws its data from the processing of the police records in Bordeaux and Poitiers, after a method developed by an astronomer, from the monographic study of a recidivist murderer nicknamed "the moon-killer", Francis Leroy; from the exploitation of an investigation carried out with 40 policemen, 40 firemen, 40 prison governors, 40 SAMU and 40 psychiatrists. The second part of it endeavours to survey the different theories on the influence of the moon, both physical (luminous, gravitational or electromagnetic) and cultural. In conclusion, the moon does not seem to have any quantitative influence on violent offences, but rather a slight qualitative one. These two influences are to be found in a more convincing way as regards suicides, hence the following hypothesis: the moon may have some minor, selective and unstable influence on some violent attitudes, behavioural problems (nervousness, malevolence) which don't automatically lead to criminal offence but which can

Its purpose is to combat the juridical concepts of penal responsibility and free will which it qualifies as being scolastical and metaphysical. It pretends to be independent and autonomous, but can it dispose of the psychiatrical ascendancy ? can it define its object without referring to the notion of forbidden which is purely juridical ? what will remain of the criminological plan without the psychiatrical knowledge and the juridical definitions of the crime being an objectif of this pretended science ? the criminology is only an extralegal psychiatry. The penal law will continue to reign the field of criminality because it is the social representative of the psychic life

Full textThe purpose with this paper is to study some strategies for assessing students, used by teachers working in Swedish secondary schools. The strategies are studied with the intention to find out if they can produce comparative results, when putting the emphasis on the result being equal between schools, teachers and years. We have looked at how the teachers assemble their view on a student, and how they later on link this to the grade that they will present to the student. We have interviewed six different teachers, three men and three women, working at both lower and upper secondary schools. We also interviewed two headmasters from the schools the teachers worked at. We have made use of the statements from the teachers and literature relevant to fair and equal assessing in this document. We have shown that the strategies the teachers were using are possible to place in categories, and that from these categories we are able to debate their strengths and weaknesses in regard of producing equal assessments and consequently equal grades.

Full textThe thesis discusses the new understandings of lunar seismology obtained from the re-analyses of Apollo seismic data. Three topics will be discussed. First is the seismic use of Apollo 17 Lunar Surface Gravimeter Data. I reanalyzed the gravimeter data in and showed that we can obtain seismic information from the data. Using this additional data, I succeeded in identifying new farside deep moonquake and evaluating the observation bias of the Apollo seismic network. Second are the spectral analyses of moonquakes. By using both long and short period seismometer I succeeded in expanding the usable frequency range of the seismic spectra and enabled more detailed investigation of source mechanisms of moonquakes. From the investigation, I found that stress drop of deep moonquakes is -0. 1 MPa considering the effect of scattered energy into the coda. This is comparable with the stress variation caused by the tidal stress acting on the Moon and my result supports the model of tidally oriented deep moonquakes. Finally, I examined the spatial distribution of impact events and bombardment history on the Moon. I used the seismically identified meteorite impacts, which cover much smaller scale impacts compared to previous studies, and examined the cratering asymmetry on the Moon. From the close investigation, I found that the cratering asymmetry exists on the Moon for small meter size craters. In ail cases, I showed that Apollo seismic data is still an important piece of information and at the same time, additional data and observations are desired for more detailed discussion of the nature of lunar seismic events

Full textThis thesis examines the difficulties in estimating the geometrical distance of visual space. Submitted in the field of Philosophy of Perception, this thesis is first discussed from an epistemological standpoint: how does one know that this distance is unknown or unknowable despite being perceived and discussed. The various works of Berkeley serve as a point of depart and establish a speculative framework as Berkeley held that judgment of distance results entirely from experience despite the fact that this distance cannot be seen in a phenomenal way. This thesis examines an essential question supported by this central problem, this time from an ontological position: how is the type of distance to be determined: is it unconsciously visible?tangible? or both visible and tangible at the same time? Can it be categorized in a hyperbolic space, or spherical space, or a strictly Euclidean space, or hyperbolic and spherical at the same time as Euclidean? In support of the thesis and research, various texts and experiences have been examined and contrasted, including those of Berkeley and I. Rock as well as T. Reid and M. Wagner. The goal has been to explore the limits of argumentation and to show what is implicated by these different accounts and assignment of distance in one, versus another, determined space; additionally studying subjects including the experience of the alleys or the so-called the moon illusion, which appeared to be demonstrative examples. In each instance, geometry of visual space and physiological optics confront one another, but at the center of this same fundamental debate is the question of how to define the estimation of distance philosophically?
