Abstract:
Change is inevitable and certain factors contribute to these changes. Before people lived simpler lives but now, people seem to live their lives going with the trends. Stating the obvious, there is a difference in how women act, dress, how they were treated or simply on how they lived from the past and in the present. In terms of clothing, they wore more conservative clothes back then. This study aims to differentiate further the past from the present. It aims to know the divergence in women in the old days and women forthwith, as well as the factors that contributed to these transformations and its reasons. The researchers utilized interviews in gathering credible information in determining the various roles and lifestyles of Ilocano women. It was conducted in the Northern part of Luzon in the Philippines called “Ilocos” specifically in La Union. The Ilocanos are the third largest Filipino Ethnolinguistic group which makes it possible to conduct research integrating the empowerment of Ilocano women. This research is beneficial to women, especially to the Ilocanos. It clarifies the roles of women and the modern image of an Ilocano as part of the Filipino community. With the given responses of the participants, themes were identified in order to determine the changes among the various roles of women in an Ilocano culture. Their responses also indicated the values that every Ilocana possesses. The problems encountered by the Ilocano women were classified according to their various roles in society. The researchers came up with a recommendation that focuses on gender equality and promoting an egalitarian Ilocano community.

Abstract:
Objective: The goal of this work is the creation of word lists, in Ilocano, suitable for use in speech audiometry. Methods: First, estimates of the distribution of speech sounds and of the most common syllable structures in Ilocano were found from a phonetic transcription analysis of nearly 3000 words obtained from three magazine articles. Second, 372 two-syllable words were rated, for commonness, by fifteen native speakers of Ilocano who currently reside in Hawai’i. Finally, various combinations of two-syllable words were made to produce 50-item lists. Results: First, an estimate of the distribution of speech sounds in Ilocano was found, with frequencies of occurrence ranging from 22.4%, for the speech sound /a/, to 0.007%, for the speech sound /v/. The syllable-structure analyses revealed that a very small number of distinct monosyllabic words were used very frequently. Two-syllable words were also used frequently, but were attributed to many distinct words. Second, from the rating results, approximately 70% of the two-syllable words in the rating survey were judged as common by 12 or more of the raters. Finally, four lists of 50 words each were constructed using only common two-syllable words with the most frequent two-syllable structures found in Ilocano. Each word list has a distribution of speech sounds that approximates that found from the phonetic analysis, and hence each list is roughly phonetically-balanced. Conclusions: These word lists may be of value to otolaryngologists and audiologists who work with native speakers of Ilocano. Keywords: Ilocano, Ilokano, phonetically-balanced, speech audiometry, word lists

Abstract:
The status of morphology and procedures of morphological production vary in remarkably diverse ways among languages of different typologies. The analysis presented in this study documents pervasive phenomena manifested in the discourse of Ilocano, as a result of the unique highly-prefixing typology of the language, which may contribute to our understanding of the concepts of lexeme, morphological integrity, and affixal boundness. From a thirty-hour corpus of natural interactions among native speakers of Ilocano, certain patterns of language production are introduced that typify the need to understand the synchronic role of morphology in a polysynthetic language and the status that inflectional and/or derivational affixes have in the lexicons of the speakers (Rubino 1994a). This paper will illustrate the intricate workings of the Ilocano language with regard to inter-morphemic pausing, production of affixes without lexical roots, the post-production restructuring of affixation, and the many uses of the versatile empty root kua which is employed by speakers who have uttered the syntactic frame of the word with appropriate affixes, before accessing the lexical root, suggesting that planning and production often take place at the morphemic level. It will then become apparent how the use of discourse data can be utilized to better our understanding of morphology and morphological processes.

Abstract:
In the Philippines, having analyzed that a great majority of the businesses in the country are small family-based enterprises, they may be viable endeavors contributing to economic development. Ilocos Norte is known for its chichacorn industry composed of family-based micro and small enterprises. Chichacorn has become a popular agri-tourism product bought as healthy snacks among the residents, tourists and travelers. The boom of tourism in the province led to the growth of the industry. In order to enable the continuity of these family businesses, it is important to understand the Ilocano family business, to identify the personal traits and cultural values of the Ilocano as entrepreneurs and determine their strengths and weaknesses. The research design used a qualitative approach to search for meaning – the beginnings of the chichacorn industry, traits and cultural values of the Ilocano entrepreneurs and their strengths and weaknesses that contribute to the sustainability of these family businesses. The entire process is inductive, exploratory and descriptive. The qualitative approach used a case study strategy. After the interviews were completed, they were transcribed and then forwarded to the respondents for review and approval. It was found out that the chichacorn industry in Paoay, Ilocos Norte is composed of eight family businesses who are relatives up to the third degree of consanguintiy. It was also found out that the chichacorn producers are industrious and hardworking, innovative and resourceful, thrifty, good managers, and have foresight. The Ilocano family has the necessary traits to become successful in business. These are backed up with the richness of the Ilocano culture. However, in order to survive competition and become sustainable, it has to transform as a family-oriented business into a professionally managed organization.

Abstract:
Cultural heritage is important to people’s identity and character.Preserving the culture is therefore very important for the future generations. The Tinguians who are the natives of Abra Province have their own culture which is distinct from other Filipino ethnolinguistic groups. Studies on the Tinguians however, show that many of their customs, traditions, practices and beliefs are no longer observed or done. To develop socio-cultural awarenesswhich enhances the pride of the learner’s heritage, language and culture, the Department of Education has institutionalized the Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education as its fundamental educational policy and program. This study which is a qualitative research aimed to determine how the program helps in the preservation of the Tinguian culture. The interview guide was used to gather data from the teachers, and officials of the selected public schools in Tinguian communities where the program was piloted. These were complemented by the observations of the researchers when they visited the schools. Based on the findings of the study, the first language or mother tongue of the learners is Ilocano thus the medium of instruction for kindergarten to Grade 3 is Ilocano; some of the teachers are not Tinguians and cannot speak the dialect; there is no working orthography of the Tinguian dialects; there are no available teachers guide, reading and instructional materialsin Tinguian; many of the learners whose parents are Tinguians speak Ilocano with their friends and classmates.

Abstract:
<p><em>Language attitudes have been the focus of interest in sociolinguistics for the past decades. In the Philippines, there is a dearth of literature on sociolinguistic studies that focus on indigenous languages and their speakers. To contribute to the literature, this study endeavoured to investigate the attitudes of Gaddang speakers in the northern part of the country towards Gaddang, their native language; Ilocano, the lingua franca of the province; Tagalog/Filipino, the national language; and English, one of the official languages. It also explored possible differences in the language attitudes of the Gaddangs in terms of geographical location, age, gender, socio-economic status, and educational attainment. Using survey questionnaire and semi-structured interview, the study involved 568 respondents. Results revealed that Gaddang speakers manifest positive attitudes towards Tagalog, Gaddang, Ilocano, and English respectively. The study also yielded significant differences in their attitudes with respect to geographical location, age, socio-economic status, and educational attainment except gender. The results have significant implications on the maintenance or gradual loss of their native language.</em></p>

Abstract:
Stature determination aids the person identification during forensic investigation. The human hand research is the current topic of interest among forensic scientist, forensic medicine experts and anthropologists. Based on sample size analysis, the study involved consented 60 males and 60 females, age ranged from 18 to 55 years old. Stature and hand lengths measurements were made with Stadiometer and Vernier Calipers for analysis. From each participant, ten hand length measurements, five from left and five from right hands were taken. The five length measurements in left hand are the inter-distance between the distal traverse crease of the wrist (LH) and tip of thumb (T), index finger (I), middle finger (M), ring finger (R) & little finger (L), as abbreviated LHT, LHI, LHM, LHR and LHL. Similarly, the right hand lengths indicated as RHT, RHI, RHM, RHR, and RHL. The data were statistically analyzed by using SPSS software, version 23 and column chart. The information about age, gender, name, and place of origin of the participants was coded for easy reference. This study finally developed regression equations to determine stature from hand anthropometry among Ilocano population in Philippines for person identification

Abstract:
Summary Bloomfield’s contribution to Austronesian linguistics was quantitatively small, but qualitatively of high importance. He published only one book and one article on Philippine languages. His gigantic Tagálog Texts with Grammatical Analysis (1917) is still, after seventy years, the best single source of information in existence for an Austronesian language. It exemplified a successful application of descriptive analytical method to material dictated by an informant, and as such was an important step in the development of Bloomfield’s principles of linguistic analysis. As such, it represents a major advance over his 1914 Introduction to the Study of Language. The importance and value of his Tagálog Texts have never been given fully adequate recognition. His other contribution, the short “Outline of Ilocano Syntax” (1942) is a tour de force in demonstrating the possibility of making so economical statement as to cover in less than seven pages the entire taxonomic syntax of a language.

Abstract:
The study collected and analyzed the content, theme, and virtues nested in the indigenous Ilocano songs in the Northwestern part of Cagayan province, Philippines. These folksongs are expressions of Ilokanos’ thoughts, feelings and emotions as shown in the folksongs on love for humanity and the natural world. The themes are focused on being proud, happy and thankful for the quality of life they have, for any beautiful thing, for the love of family, and for the gift of nature. The dominant virtues traced include faithfulness, idealism, optimism, industry, humility, unity, pride, love and respect. Preservation and conservation of these folksongs is possible through collecting and documentation, transforming these songs into various media (printed and electronic), and establishing a folksong museum which could be a Center of Folksong- Knowledge Transmission. Government and the academic community should help support the conservation of authentic Ilokano songs before these shall be forgotten.

Abstract:
Vegetative and reproductive characteristics, fruit yield, and biochemical compounds of six bitter melon cultivars (Iranshahr, Mestisa, No. 486, Local Japanese, Isfahan, and Ilocano) were evaluated under Karaj conditions in Iran. The phytochemical properties of the cultivars were evaluated using both shade-dried and freeze-dried samples at three fruit developmental stages (unripe, semi-ripe, and ripe). There were significant differences in the vegetative and reproductive characteristics among cultivars, where cv. No. 486 was superior to most vegetative attributes. The fruit yield of cultivars varied from 2.98–5.22 kg/plant. The number of days to male and female flower appearance ranged from 19.00–25.33 and from 25–33 days, respectively. The leaf charantin content was in the range of 4.83–11.08 μg/g. Fruit charantin content varied with developmental stage, drying method, and cultivar. The highest charantin content (13.84 ± 3.55 µg/g) was observed at the semi-ripe fruit stage, and it was much higher in the freeze-dried samples than the shade-dried samples. Cultivar No. 486 had the highest (15.43 ± 2.4 µg/g) charantin content, whereas the lowest charantin content (8.51 ± 1.15 µg/g) was recorded in cultivar cv. Local Japanese. The highest total phenol content (25.17 ± 2.27 mg GAE/g) was recorded in freeze-dried samples of ripe fruits of cv. No. 486, whereas the lowest phenol content was detected in the shade-dried samples of semi-ripe fruits of Isfahan. cv. Flavonoid content was higher with the shade-drying method, irrespective of cultivar. In conclusion, considering the fruit yield and active biological compounds in the studied cultivars, cv. No. 486 should be grown commercially because of its higher yield and production of other secondary metabolites.

Abstract:
The Philippines is composed of almost 200 languages and dialects, more or less, and eight (8) of these are considered major languages, namely: Bikolano, Cebuano, Hiligaynon (Ilonggo), Ilocano, Kapampangan, Pangasinan, Tagalog, and Waray. However, there are still varied languages which are not yet recognized, and one of these is Aldames, a variety of the Cebuano language. The purpose of this study was to determine the origin, the characteristics, and the unique features of the Aldames language. This study used the qualitative approach in which the data were gathered through actual interviews and conversations from the speech community. Recorded interviews and conversations were then transcribed and categorized into themes. It was found out that the “Aldames” language is a modified version of the English alphabet because the language has corresponding letters in English. However, changes occur in most consonants (b/v-m, c/k-n, d-p, f.p-d, g/ng-r, k/c-n, l-ll/ly, m-b, n-k/c, p-d, q/kyu-nyu, r-g/ng, s-t, y/eks-ent, z/s-t) while all vowels (a, e, i, o, u) and few consonants (h, w, and y) are retained except for “j” which has no Aldames equivalent. Also, it emerged because the elders would not want their secrets to be revealed by the young and would only be understood by a few. Hence, today, the residents who are not exposed to the language in the area are confused in learning the language because before one can speak well, he/she should be familiar with the appropriate consonants-substitutes. It is recommended that the language must be recognized and be included in the list of languages in the Philippines. Moreover, the said language has to be spoken every day, so it will be preserved.

This paper is an attempt to analyze the process of contemporary overseas labor migration from a village in the Ilocos region in the Philippines to Italy. As such, it will seek to outline the basic characteristics of the process of migration and examine them in relation to the local social structure. It will demonstrate how the Ilocanos responded to new opportunities of migration by manipulating existing social relations. Particular attention will be given to the process of constructing kinship networks among the migrants and the practice of fosterage in the homeland community, both of which are considered as adaptive processes to the new migration opportunity.

La exposición que nosotros ofrecemos se ciñe al estudio de dicha actividad a siete de las lenguas habladas en aquellas latitudes, a saber: la visaya, tagala, china, ilocana, ibanag, gaddan y batán o ibatán.</p><p>Early records on the beginnings of Christianity in the Philippines show that one of the main difficulties that the Spanish missionaries encountered in their apostolic task was the variety of languages. This study has attempted to bring to light the linguistic work carried out by them in some of the dialects spoken in the Islands. They were well versed in those languages. Thus we have found that the Friars were the ones who wrote the first grammars and dictionaries for the e use of the natives.</p>

Abstract:

Abstract:
This research delves into a poverty alleviating way of life of the Ilocanoes- the Tagnawa System. This practice is the coming together of men and women around the neighborhood to help one another during times requiring voluminous work, without thinking monetary remuneration in return. It identified the segment of population that had been practicing it and the occasions in their life as a community that have made this system very fructifying. Data gathering was done through interview with senior citizens in the locality, and reinforced through readings and internet blogs. The tagnawa system was practiced among the Ilocanoes’ of yesteryears: a) on various farming activities, b) on special events like weddings or burials, and c) for house construction, renovation and repair. Focusing on the interview with senior citizens who experienced these three occasions, the researcher was able to identify and appreciate innate Ilocano values and original Iloko terms which are already seldom used nowadays. This research tries to revive their use for the present generation to ponder upon. Indeed, Ilocandia is a place where conscientious people once lived. Let it be forever!

Abstract:
This study att empts to explore the social roles of community journalism in the preservation of Ilocano language and culture in Metro Vigan. Specifically, it determined the extent of effectiveness of the social roles of community journalism; the significant relationship between the profile and the social roles of community journalism; and the significant difference of the extent of effectiveness of community journalism when reader-respondents are grouped according to municipalities. Using a researcher-constructed and field-validated instrument, data were purposively gathered through informants from the four municipalities and one city of Metro Vigan. Two hundred fifty (250) participants were involved in the study and the following statistical tools were utilized: frequency and percentages, mean, Pearson r, ANOVA, and Scheff e’ test. Results revealed that majority of the respondents are female; a great number of them belong to the parent age or 20-39 years old; majority resides in the rural areas; most of them are skilled workers; and many of them widely read Bannawag. The study further disclosed that there exist significant relationships between the personal attributes of the respondents and the social roles of community journalism. Furthermore, significant differences in the responses between and among the reader-respondents exist when grouped according to municipalities. Abstract:
In the Philippines, the adoption of Bt maize has been persistent to address the benefits for smallholder producers. The objective of this study is to identify the factors affecting the food security of children from corn farming households in Cagayan Valley, Philippines. Multi-stage random sampling was used in a cross-sectional study of 1-10-year-old children of corn farmers in the provinces of Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, and Cagayan. In this particular study, a total of 408 children from corn farming households were included. A face-to-face interview was conducted to gather socio-economic and demographic information. Food insecurity was assessed using a nine-item Radimer/Cornell food insecurity measure translated to the Ilocano dialect. Descriptive statistics were performed for all variables to describe the percentage distributions of all Radimer/Cornell food insecurity items. Regression analysis was employed to examine the factors affecting food security. The result of the study revealed that educational attainment of father, occupation of both parents and type of corn grown are significant factors of food security of children from corn farming households. Moreover, parents who have higher educational attainment and whose primary occupation was Bacillus thuringiensis corn farming have food secured children. The result of analysis on the food security of children from this study provides a useful baseline information for future interventions towards the fight against poverty, hunger and malnutrition.

The Quiché Title of Ilocab, given here in facsimile with modem transcription, translation, and notes, is one of seven from San Miguel Totonicapan in Guatemala that Carmack found and was given permission to copy. Although differing in many respects, it apparently was based on Vico' s Theologia Indorum, a part of which is also published in this issue of Tlalocan. The authors believe that the original document may have been from the sixteenth century, but that the present copy must have been made later, probably in the seventeenth or even the eighteenth century.

Abstract:
ObjectiveCerebellar neurodegenerative disorders (CDs) are a heterogeneous group of disorders. It is known that the cerebellum plays a role not only in motor, but also in cognitive and social cognitive functions. The aim of this study was to investigate social cognition in patients with different CDs.Materials and MethodsSocial cognition was examined in 34 patients, 12 with spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1), 6 with spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2), and 16 with idiopathic late onset cerebellar ataxia (ILOCA). All patients were clinically evaluated using the Scale for the Rating and Assessment of Ataxia. In addition, 34 age, sex, and education-matched healthy control (HC) subjects were similarly analyzed. Social cognition was studied using two tests: the Faux Pas Recognition Test and the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET). An appropriate array of neuropsychological tests was used to assess the global cognitive status as well as the frontal functions and mood.ResultsCD patients achieved significantly worse results on both tests of social cognition compared to the HCs. The SCA1 + 2 group achieved the poorest results on the Faux Pas Recognition Test and exhibited poor performance on all cognitive tests, but was only significantly worse compared to the ILOCA group on the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT) – recognition. The patients in the SCA1 + 2 and ILOCA groups obtained similar scores on RMET. In the SCA1 + 2 group the findings significantly correlated with clinical parameters of disease severity and duration and executive functions (EFs), and with mood and executive functions in the ILOCA group. In the SCA group EFs appeared as the only significant predictor of RMET achievement. The Boston Naming Test (BTN) was a significant predictor of the CD patients’ achievement on RMET, while the BTN, the Trail Making Test Part A and FCSRT – Delayed free recall predicted their performance on the Faux Pas Recognition Test.ConclusionPatients with CD have social cognitive impairments as demonstrated by the Faux Pas Test and the RMET test results. The SCA1 and 2 patients exhibited a more pronounced impairment compared with the ILOCA patients. The independent cognitive predictors of social cognition impairment were EFs and language.

Abstract:
John Gray, in his book Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, explored the differences in the behaviors and languages of men and women by means of his eponymous metaphor that men and women are from distinct planets and that each gender is acclimated to its own planet’s society and customs, but not to those of the other. This metaphor is anchored on the Difference Theory, popularized by Deborah Tannen, which examines the effect that gender has on language use. This study, therefore, is an attempt to explore differences in male and female language in English, Filipino, and Iloco. It seeks to determine the linguistic features that characterize the language of the two groups represented by 100 students from LORMA Colleges. These include language preference; linguistic borrowing; dynamics of code-switching; use of adjectives in English Filipino, and Iloco; and syntactic complexity. Language differences also cover topic preferences of men and women; topics considered not in good taste for conversation, taboo words and the euphemisms used to skirt them, the use of cathartic expressions, the use of cuss words, reasons for uttering cuss words, and the source of learning cuss words. Furthermore, this study also explores how men and women perceive each other’s language, and they’re own.

Abstract. Batuyong MAR, Calaramo MA, Alejandro GJD. 2020. A checklist and conservation status of vascular plants in the Limestone forest of Metropolitan Ilocos Norte Watershed Forest Reserve, Northwestern Luzon, Philippines. Biodiversitas 21: 3969-3981. The Metropolitan Ilocos Norte Watershed Forest Reserve (MINWFR) is among the remaining intact limestone formations and a critical protected area in Northwestern Luzon. There have been few published floristic studies despite its undeniable rich biological importance. Therefore, this paper primarily aims to provide a preliminary checklist of vascular plants in MINWFR and their conservation status. Consequent field visits and surveys were made from April 2019 to March 2020. Results revealed a total of 173 species distributed in 140 genera belonging to 59 families. The most represented families are Rubiaceae, Fabaceae, Orchidaceae, and Malvaceae. This forest supports 49% or 28.65 % local endemics, five of which are narrow endemics, namely Cyanometra warburgii, Pyrostria triflora, Syzygium ilocanum, Thrixspermum nicolasiorum, and Antirhea microphylla. The latter, however, extends up to Ilocos Sur. Based on IUCN criteria and DENR records, a total of 18 species are threatened, one species is recorded as critically endangered, five endangered, nine vulnerable, three other threatened, two near threatened, 55 as least concern, and the rest are not evaluated. Other noteworthy species present in the area are the two dominant endangered species, Podocarpus costalis, and Podocarpus polystachyus. An interesting spinescent Rubiaceae species were recorded and currently under examination to establish its identity. This checklist serves as a basis to effectively manage this vulnerable area surrounded by human-induced disturbances and threats.
