Abstract:
This review-essay explores approaches to the thought of the creative Soviet Marxist thinker Evald Ilyenkov as discussed in a recent book edited by Alex Levant and Vesa Oittinen, Dialectics of the Ideal: Evald Ilyenkov and Creative Soviet Marxism. The book consists of a series of commentaries and contextual essays which centre on the translated text of Ilyenkov’s Dialectics of the Ideal. The approach the authors take to Ilyenkov’s work differs from previous ones of exploring the totality of Ilyenkov’s thought or eclectic aspects of it. AbstractThe latest book by Russian philosopher Sergey Mareev consists of two parts: recollections of his teacher Evald Ilyenkov, and reflections on some of the key themes of Ilyenkov’s philosophical heritage. The author traces several polemical lines related to the problem of the ideal (Ilyenkov versus Losev and Lifschitz), dialectics of the abstract and the concrete, the principle of historicism, as well as Ilyenkov’s interpretation of Spinoza and Hegel.

Abstract:
The article reveals the ideas of the Soviet philosopher Evald Ilyenkov in the context of the characteristics of Soviet philosophy. The reason for the rejection of Ilyenkov’s ideas by official Soviet Marxism was his non-orthodox understanding of Marxist philosophy as materialist dialectics, the main task of which he considered to be the discovery of the laws of knowledge. Ilyenkov was accused of “epistemology,” “idealism,” and “positivism,” although it was him who consistently criticized the idealistic and positivist tendencies in Soviet philosophy. The article is a study of Ilyenkov’s archival papers published in his Collected Works. In the drafts of his dissertation (1950–1953), Marx’s Paris manuscripts of 1844, at that time published only in German, were discussed for the first time in Russian philosophy. Ilyenkov focuses on the concepts of “contemplation” and human subjectivity as a form of “practical-spiritual mastery of the world” (the term of the mature Marx). The distinction between practical and contemplative materialism is clarified. Ilyenkov seeks to understand human subjectivity as a one-sided and fragmentary expression of th

The article is devoted to rethinking the place and role of Evald Vasilyevich Ilyenkov in the Russian epistemological tradition. His interpretation of the dialectic of the real and the ideal (in German: Ideelle) turns out to be strikingly consonant with the intellectual searches of Russian philosophers of the first half of the twentieth century (G.G. Shpet, P.A. Florensky, M.M. Bakhtin, A.F. Losev, etc.), who turned (each in their own way) to understanding the phenomena of the social world. This chapter explores the benefits of a theoretical and methodological encounter between Bourdieu's concepts of capital, Deleuze's line of thought, and Marxist activity theory, particularly the Russian strand by Ilyenkov and Leontjev. Bourdieu, Deleuze, and Ilyenkov share a common denominator in Marx. In a contemporary light, Bourdieu's sociological concepts reflect an effort to readdress issues of class and practice as raised by Marx. The author claims that development of Marxist activity theory benefits from such an encounter, especially in educational research. The expanded concept of capit
