Abstract:
(Referral) is one of the most present and important coherent linking tools in achieving the textual of the text, and it is a linguistic phenomenon that contributes to the consistency of parts of the text, of its two types: textual and denominational, and referral performs its function through a group of means, including: pronouns, nouns, demonstrative pronouns, comparative tools and (al) of definition. This research’s aim to highlight the importance of referral of all kinds in the production of consistent and coherent texts. It also aims to clarify those referral criteria found in the poems of the poet (Imad al-Din al-Kurdi al-Badlisi) in his poems (Rashpozhan). The research deals theoretically with referral and its role in the consistency of the text, and it examines the referral means that achieve the textual of the text, because these criteria and means have a prominent role and importance in achieving consistency and coherence of the text. The research took the poems from of the Kurdish poet (Imad al-Din al-Badlisi) in his divan (Rashpozhan) as a field of application, with the aim of identifying those referring criteria in his diwan and how the poet resorted to them to achieve a consistent text and a tight link between the parts of the text.

Abstract:
This article investigates autobiography as an improvisatory mode of religious speech in pre-colonial South Asia, arguing (i) that autobiographical writing in early South Asia is marked by great spontaneity and invention of form in the absence of a proper literary genre; (ii) that we can discern distinctly South Asian ways of speaking autobiographically, ways that predate and differ from modern European understandings of autobiography and (iii) that autobiographical speech is used as a powerful technique for religious polemic in South Asia and appears in particular at moments of heightened religio-political competition and contestation. Along with a number of examples, two texts will be explored in greater detail: autobiographies by a seventeenth-century Jain merchant and religious reformer Banarasidas and a nineteenth-century Christian priest and convert from Islam, ‘Imad ud-din.

Abstract:
On 24 December 1144 'Imad ad-Din Zengi, the Muslim ruler of Aleppo and Mosul, captured the Christian city of Edessa. This was the most serious setback suffered by the Frankish settlers in the Levant since their arrival in the region at the end of the eleventh century. In reaction the rulers of Antioch and Jerusalem dispatched envoys to the west appealing for help. The initial efforts of Pope Eugenius in and King Louis VII of France met with little response, but at Easter 1146, at Vézelay, Bernard of Clairvaux led a renewed call to save the Holy Land and the Second Crusade began to gather momentum. As the crusade developed, its aims grew beyond an expedition to the Latin East and it evolved into a wider movement of Christian expansion encom-passing further campaigns against the pagan Wends in the Baltic and the Muslims of the Iberian peninsula. One particular group of men participated in two elements of the crusade; namely, the northern Europeans who sailed via the Iberian peninsula to the Holy Land. In thecourse of this journey they achieved the major success of the Second Crusade when they captured the city of Lisbon in October 1147. This article will consider how this aspect of the expedition fitted into the conception of the crusade as a whole and will try to establish when Lisbon became the principal target for the crusaders. St Bernard's preaching tour of the Low Countries emerges as an important, yet hitherto neglected, event.

Kawtharani, Farah. "The state in modern Islamic Shi'i thought: Imam Muhammad Mahdi Shams al-Din." Thesis, McGill University, 2012. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=110399.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the political thought of Imam Muhammad Mahdi Shams al-Din (d. 2001), a Lebanese religio-political figure who served as the president of the Islamic Shiʿi Supreme Council, officially representing the Lebanese Shiʿites. He examined in his writings the concept of government in Islam and in particular forms of government suitable for contemporary Muslim countries. He was particularly preoccupied with the delineation and restriction of the powers of governmental authorities, which led him to a critique of Ayatollah Khomeini's wilāyat al-faqīh. He pointed to the challenges that a government based on wilāyat al-faqīh would cause for the separation of powers and the dangers of vesting absolutist powers in the state. His fears of vesting absolute powers in the hands of wilāyat al-faqīh's government coincided with the rise of the Hizbullah in the 1990s and led him to embrace the concept of civil government, which was predicated on a differentiation between the governmental and religious realms. His shift toward civil government stemmed from his concern to protect and preserve the role of religion in society, arguing that religion dwells in civil society and plays a vital and assertive role in the public space. In this context, Shams al-Din developed a discourse on civil public Islam that would be active in civil society and accommodate religious diversity.Shams al-Din also discussed approaches to temporal governments in the Imamate doctrine, developing legal arguments that legitimized cooperation with such governments. He proposed accepting the secular laws of the modern civil governments, with the exception of the paramount question of personal status laws, which should be administered by religious authorities.

Wegehenkel, Martin. "Die Nutzung von Fernerkundungsdaten in der Wasserhaushaltsmodellierung : ein Review." Universität Potsdam, 2006. http://www.uni-potsdam.de/imaf/events/ge_work0602.html.

Full text
Abstract:

Crow, Douglas Sloan. "The role of al-ʻAql in early Islamic wisdom with reference to Imam Jaʻfar al-Ṣādiq." Thesis, McGill University, 1996. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=40333.

Full text
Abstract:
One major trajectory of early 'aql traditions is scrutinized: the Aqbil! Adbir! creation narrative "lamma khalaqa llahu l-'aqla (When god had created the intelligence ...)". In Part I early Sunni and Shii transmission and reception of the varying texts dominates the discussion, with analysis of chief motifs. Then successive transformations are traced, with attention devoted to ideas of 'first creation'. The original context of the Aqbil! reports is convincingly explained within the thought forms of 1st & 2nd century theological ideas of voluntarism or predestination, without recourse to Goldziher's "new-Platonic element". The late neo-Platonising form "awwalu ma khalaqa llahu l-'aqlu, (The first (thing) God created is the intellect ...)", is shown to be not earlier than the mid-3rd/9th century.
In a related class of narratives, 'aql pre-exists in the realm of the divine Throne. The focus is the notion of the divinely provisioned innate trait of 'intelligence' or 'wisdom' as a "light in the heart" inequitably apportioned among humanity. Part II examines the creative manner in which the sixth Shi'iimam Ja'far al-Sadiq (d.148/765) transforms the Aqbil! tradition by integrating this heavenly sapiential 'aql with the 'Adam-Iblis' conflict into a binary listing of the character traits (akhlaq, khisal). His myth of the creation, empowerment, and opposition between 'aql and jahl (intelligence & ignorance, or wisdom & folly) propounds a psycho-ethical scheme for the inner purgative struggle, wherein 'aql operates as chief of the character traits, Ja'far stresses the cognitive function (ma'rifah) in the perfection of 'aql peculiar to the inner circles of humanity (prophets, saints$ $ Imams, the faithful). An assessment is given of the repercussions of al-Sadiq's contribution for continuing Shii and Sufi enrichments of the 'aql creation narratives (eg. with al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi).

Abstract:
This chapter sketches the consolidation of the imamate since the departure of the Ottomans from Yemen in 1918-19, and the formation of an opposition movement against the autocratic rule of Imam Yahya Hamid al-Din in the 1930s and 40s. It highlights ‘Abdullah al-Wazir’s career as the prime negotiator and signatory of the Treaty of Ta’if following the first Saudi-Yemeni war in 1934 and as the supreme leader (Imam) of the embryonic constitutional imamate in 1948. Dealing with key data such as the failure of the constitutional revolt and ‘Abdullah al-Wazir’s and Amat al-Latif’s husband’s execution, this chapter provides the backdrop against which the following ones become intelligible.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the alleged unearthing of the head of al-Husayn by the Fatimid vizier Badr al-Din al-Jamali in Ascalon, as recorded in a epigraph of 484/1091, inscribed on a wooden minbar. Positioning this episode in the career of al-Jamali, and in the geo-political circumstances of Egypt and Syria under the imam-caliph al-Mustansir, and in light of the attitude of Muslims towards Ahl al-Bayt, it concludes by suggesting that the shrine established for the relic was intended as an 'ecumenical' Islamic sacred space.
