Full textThe choice of the starting example is an important issue for content-based image retrieval approaches. Usual systems suggest to the user to look for images similar to the one he selected either among the database itself or from an external image collection; the results are retrieved according to specific metrics suitable with extracted descriptors. In this work, we investigated the case of a missing or at least inappropriate starting example and hence the need of mental image composition in order to initiate the search process. To do so, the paradigm of Visual Thesaurus stands for a visual summary of all regions of the database, these segmented regions are clustered into coherent categories from which we select the representatives to compose the initial "page zero". Our interest was oriented toward the construction of a reliable visual thesaurus that meets the requirements of coarse segmentation and wide variability in region's photometric and structural complexity. Global attributes are suitable to likely homogenous regions whereas fine local descriptors through Harris points of interest infer robustness and visual coherence to the categorization step. The clustering requires, on the one hand, fuzzy agglomerative algorithms but also, in case of textured patterns, relational dual formulation depending mainly on the dimension of the description space. The objective of our work is to provide an alternative to starting example by composing the mental query through the arrangement of the visual patches selected from the Visual Thesaurus. Pairs of regions are described by a weighted angular spatial histogram to determine the orientation between an argument region and a referent one. Accordingly, both logical and spatial compositions are involved; returned results rely on inverted files indexation and histogram intersection metrics respectively

Abstract: Once taken for granted as genuine, photographs are no longer considered as a piece of truth. With the advance of digital image processing and computer graphics techniques, it has been easier than ever to manipulate images and forge new realities within minutes. Unfortunately, most of the times, these modifications seek to deceive viewers, change opinions or even affect how people perceive reality. Therefore, it is paramount to devise and deploy efficient and effective detection techniques. From all types of image forgeries, composition images are specially interesting. This type of forgery uses parts of two or more images to construct a new reality from scenes that never happened. Among all different telltales investigated for detecting image compositions, image-illumination inconsistencies are considered the most promising since a perfect light matching in a forged image is still difficult to achieve. This thesis builds upon the hypothesis that image illumination inconsistencies are strong and powerful evidence of image composition and presents four original and effective approaches to detect image forgeries. The first method explores eye specular highlight telltales to estimate the light source and viewer positions in an image. The second and third approaches explore metamerism, when the colors of two objects may appear to match under one light source but appear completely different under another one. Finally, the last approach relies on user¿s interaction to specify 3-D normals of suspect objects in an image from which the 3-D light source position can be estimated. Together, these approaches bring to the forensic community important contributions which certainly will be a strong tool against image forgeries

Full textAustralian males participate in physical activity more frequently than their Japanese counterparts (Australians = 98.6% involved in vigorous activity at least once per week, Japanese living in Japan = 85.7%, Japanese living in Australia = 72.1%). Significant differences p<0.05) in energy contribution patterns were found between the Japanese group (Protein: 14.4%, Carbohydrate: 50.4%, Fat: 28.1%) and Japanese living in Australia (JA: Protein: 16.3%, Carbohydrate: 47.3%, Fat: 32.3%) and the Australians (Protein: 17.1%, Carbohydrate: 47.9%, Fat: 30.6%). This shows that the Japanese living in Australia have adopted a more westemised diet than those living in Japan. Body Image assessments were done on all study groups using the Somatomorphic Matrix (SM) computer program and questionnaires, including the Ben-Tovim Walker Body Attitudes Questionnaires, (BAQ) the Attention to the Body Shape Scale (ABS), and the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT). Japanese males tended to overestimate their weight and amount of body fat, while Australian Caucasian males underestimated these parameters. The Japanese groups had higher scores on the selfdisparagement subscale and lower scores on the strengths and the attractiveness subscales of the BAQ questionnaire than Australian males. Australian males also had higher scores on the EAT total score and the dieting subscale of the EAT questionnaire than Japanese males. When all groups of subjects selected their perceived body image from the SM program menu, these results had no relationship with measured body composition values, suggesting that further development of this program is needed for use in these populations.

In view of the book The Photographer, by Lefèvre, Guibert and Lemercier, this dissertation aims to analyze and establish the discursive strategies in the intersection of photography and drawing in this graphic novel. The research is relevant to the extent that this work offers certain innovations both in the use of the language of comics, and of photography itself within the framework of the constitution of narrative and discourse. To do so, we have as main objectives to understand how the relationship between the language of comics and photography develops and is concretized in the work, in which moments the comic or photography assume the primacy, how the use of language is made throughout of the narrative and how the intrinsic characteristics of each of these languages influence the work as a whole. For this, there has been performed a quantitative-qualitative research, in order to detail and detail the characteristics of the phenomena present and pertinent to the work, using the quantified variables, obtained from the detailed observation of the work, to proceed to content analysis and analysis of the composition. From this, it might be observed that the articulated relations between photography and drawing have great complexity and present a range of nuances and interaction variables that engender a range of hierarchically superimposed meanings in interrelated layers. In some moments, it is the photography that overlaps, in others, the drawings, but all these relations make it possible to conclude that, together, these structures provide new readings and meanings that the respective languages, separately, would not do.

Full textThe memorial gift provides a theoretical reflection on the use of the image as a starting point in the structural organization and the formal compositional process. The first part presents the musical references and aesthetic motivations with which dialogue and that somehow influenced my composition. The second part consists of a theoretical framework which focuses on analyzing the importance of image in creative processes, citing authors such as Salles (2011) and Ostrower (2013), for other instances synthesizes part of composers, whose processes were mediated by creative image and who employed possibilities of using image as a guideline along the creative path. Finally I present the compositions: Fantasia Bolerosa (2012), Quya- Killa (2012), Um Olhar no passado (2013), the main object of reflection and analysis. The result of this study shows that the use of the image is a tool that can complement the compositional methodology in creating pieces as that integrate this memorial composition.

Full textThe physical properties of the coarse fraction of the till (0.4 to 20 cm) and the surface boulders have been studied at two different sites in Sweden. The research work included: development of a new image analysis software for 3D size and shape measurements of particles; lithological analysis on multiple size fractions in till and magnetic susceptibility survey on coarse till clasts, surface boulders and local bedrock.
The new 3D image analysis method provides an enormous amount of size and shape data for each particle in the coarse fraction (2 to 20 cm) in till. The method is suitable for field study, cost effective and the software is executable in Matlab. The field imaging method together with the image analysis software give non subjective results of size and shape of coarse particles and makes it feasible and easy to study representative sample size, which is one tonne for testing clasts of size up to 20 cm.
The lithological analysis of the multiple size fraction of the till clasts has been investigated on six different size fractions of the till (0.4 to 20 cm); the result of the different samples from the two sites shows that this method can potentially be used as a stratigraphic tool in the areas where there is no unique indicator lithologies.
The magnetic susceptibility has been made on the surface boulders, the 6-20 cm till fraction and on insitu bedrock outcrops near to the study sites. The method has good potential for determining stratigraphic relationships between different till units as well as for determining the provenance ofcoarse clasts and surface boulders.
Schetinger, Victor Chitolina. "Beyond digital, imagens, and forensics : towards a regulation of trust in multimedia communication." reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/182284.
Full textThis thesis discusses the role of Digital Image Forensics as a regulator of digital media in society. This includes a perceptual study with over 400 subjects to assess their ability to notice editing in images. The results of such experiment indicate that humans are easily fooled by digital images, not being able to tell apart edited and pristine images. The thesis then analyzes the effectiveness of the available arsenal of digital image forensics technology to detect image editing performed by state-of-the-art image-compositing techniques. By analyzing fundamental image patterns, forensics techniques can effectively detect the occurrence of most types of image compositing operations. In response to these two studies, the thesis presents an alternative approach to digital image forensics, based on automated plan generation. By treating the image inspection process as a plan comprised of different steps, it proposes an architecture that is able to guide an analyst choosing the next best step for inspecting an image. The generated plans are flexible, adapting on the fly to the observed results. The plans are based on a formal modelling of current forensics knowledge and techniques, so that they can be translated in steps to be executed. The thesis then shows that the limits of such an approach lie in the difficulty to validate results, which is a consequence of the setup of forensics problems: they are problems of distributed trust among parties with limited information. This scenario is analyzed from different perspectives in search for the practical limits of Digital Image Forensics as a whole. The results of such an analysis suggest that the field is lacking in providing practical and accessible solutions to society due to limited engagement in multidisciplinary research rather than due to limited technical proficiency. The thesis then discusses how paradoxes from philosophy, mathematics, and epistemology arise naturally in both real forensics scenarios, and in the theoretical foundations of the field. Digital Image Forensics ultimately deals with human communication and, as such, it is subject to all its complexities. Finally, it is argued that the path for providing useful solutions for society requires a collective engagement from different disciplines. It is the responsibility of the forensics community to develop a common, accessible epistemological framework for this collective enterprise.
