Abstract:
Abstract: Despite a growing body of literature around men’s bodies and body image, there is a paucity of research surrounding men and body image within the cancer literature. This chapter considers a range of issues including men’s body image and masculinities as well as illness-induced body dissatisfaction in men. It draws on literature and research to identify key issues so that health professionals can be informed about particular body image issues relevant to male cancer patients. The way in which the chapter is set out is designed to guide the reader through information that will highlight the broader issues facing men with respect to body image. It provides evidence to emphasize the need to understand men and their bodies in contemporary Western society generally and in the context of illness such as prostate cancer, which is the leading gender-specific cancer in men.

Abstract:
Body image disturbances are common among women in the general population. Less is known about their prevalence and impact during pregnancy. This chapter examines the history of body image theory and research. Next, we examine issues related to body image during pregnancy, such as pregravid weight, gestational weight gain, and the unique ways women think about the changes to their body during pregnancy. The role of physical activity, mood, and eating disorders in relation to peripartum body image disturbance is also discussed. Finally, assessment of body image disturbance and existing treatments are presented. Future research is needed to develop peripartum-specific body image assessment tools and to assess the impact of psychosocial interventions during and after pregnancy on body image dissatisfaction.

Jubin, Olaf. Tim Rice. Edited by Robert Gordon and Olaf Jubin. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199988747.013.21.

Abstract:
Although his major passion has always been pop music, Tim Rice is in certain respects the most successful British lyricist in musical theatre history. But what exactly is a ‘Tim Rice musical’? It turns out that the lyricist with a unique voice is most prominently at work in those musicals which he conceived himself and which investigate themes such as the plight of individuals who stand out from the crowd because of their talent and the way they are treated by the people that admire them—or tear them down. This ‘pop star scenario’ also addresses such aspects as the unpredictable behaviour of the crowd, the discrepancy between public and private image, the danger that the latter will be consumed by the former, personal ambition and its price, as well as the dissatisfaction and potential downfall that follows after early success.

Abstract:
The Body Project is an empirically based eating disorder prevention program that offers young women an opportunity to critically consider the costs of pursuing the ultra-thin ideal promoted in the mass media, and it improves body acceptance and reduces risk for developing eating disorders. Young women with elevated body dissatisfaction are recruited for group sessions in which they participate in a series of verbal, written, and behavioral exercises in which they consider the negative effects of pursuing the thin-ideal. This online resource provides information on the significance of body image and eating disorders, the intervention theory, the evidence base which supports the theory, recruitment and training procedures, solutions to common challenges, and a new program aimed at reducing obesity onset, as well as intervention scripts and participant handouts. It is the only currently available eating disorder prevention program that has been shown to reduce risk for onset of eating disorders and received support in trials conducted by several independent research groups.
