Abstract:
The International Workshop on Models and Analysis of Vocal Emissions for Biomedical Applications (MAVEBA) came into being in 1999 from the particularly felt need of sharing know-how, objectives and results between areas that until then seemed quite distinct such as bioengineering, medicine and singing. MAVEBA deals with all aspects concerning the study of the human voice with applications ranging from the neonate to the adult and elderly. Over the years the initial issues have grown and spread also in other aspects of research such as occupational voice disorders, neurology, rehabilitation, image and video analysis. MAVEBA takes place every two years always in Firenze, Italy. This edition celebrates twenty years of uninterrupted and succesfully research in the field of voice analysis.

Dotto, Diego, Dávid Falvay, and Antonio Montefusco.

Full text
Abstract:
The Pseudo-Bonaventuran Meditationes vitae Christi is one of the most influential devotional narratives of the late middle ages. It was written in Tuscany in the early fourteenth century and survived in several Latin and vernacular manuscripts and early prints. An extensive discussion has engaged the scholars, especially about the issue of the first linguistic version of the text. Even if the Latin version seems to be the original text, the vernacular manuscript Paris, BnF, it. 115 stays as one of the most important and interesting witnesses of the work. One of the earliest surviving codices, it conserves the first Italian translation (penned in the Pisan area) of the text, enriched by a wonderful set of illustration. The present volume, which is the outcome of an international and interdisciplinary collaboration, offers the first critical edition of the text, the reproduction of all images, the edition of the instructions given to the artist, accompanied by detailed philological and art-historical commentaries, glossaries, and seven interdisciplinary introductory essays.

Poliziano, Angelo. Coniurationis commentarium / Commentario della congiura dei Pazzi. Edited by Leandro Perini. Firenze University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/978-88-6655-119-5.

Full text
Abstract:
The Pazzi Consipracy by Angelo Poliziano is the only historical work in the vast production of the famous humanist. He was an eye-witness of the tragic episode that took place in Florence in 1478 in which Giuliano de' Medici was killed and his brother Lorenzo il Magnifico wounded. This was one episode in a conflict between rival banking houses during what Fernand Braudel has defined as "the first crisis of capitalism". Behind the veil of a highly cultured form of appropriation of the classical tradition (Sallust's De Catilinae coniuratione), we can discern a ruthless realism which, in its spare style, anticipates the mood of early cinema. The Pactianae coniurationis commentarium clearly reveals the traces of a time that was neither happy nor brilliant, as in the illusory images of the Renaissance that have come down to us, but rather bubbled with bloodshed and also featured phenomena such as gambling which are typical of times of crisis. Following Alessandro Perosa's by now impossible to get hold of edition, Poliziano's work is presented here in a historic perspective updated with the most recent historical reconstructions, with a series of appendices and a thorough chronology that help to focus the meanings and bring to the fore the features of the period in their potential entirety.

This chapter looks at how Regina became part of the Harlem Renaissance upon her arrival in New York City. Events collided to put Regina at the forefront of the Harlem Renaissance, a cultural movement marked by increased literary, musical, and artistic creativity by African American artists who wanted to challenge the prevailing stereotypical representation of their image. Writers and artists came from all over the United States to participate. In Los Angeles, writer Wallace Thurman encouraged fellow post-office worker Arna Bontemps to go to Harlem. Opportunity editor Charles S. Johnson encouraged Zora Neale Hurston to move to New York City. All of these great thinkers, writers, and artists would pass through the 135th Street Branch, where Regina was assigned.

Full text
Abstract:
The volume "lern.medien.werk.statt" is dedicated to the discussion of university learning workshops about their different concepts and their different self-image. In addition, the focus is explicitly on the topic of university learning workshops and digitality. Theoretical and conceptual connections between the discourses on learning workshops and media education will be explored, as well as possible incompatibilities, in an attempt to answer the following questions: - How can digital media be systematically integrated as tools to support free experimentation in learning workshops? - How can media education and in particular the use of digital media be meaningfully integrated into learning workshop concepts? - How does the work with (digital) media in the learning workshop practice take shape in concrete terms? The series " Lernen und Studieren in Lernwerkstätten – Impulse für Theorie und Praxis" is edited by Barbara Müller-Naendrup, Hartmut Wedekind, Markus Peschel and Eva Franz. The editors Barbara Holub, Klaus Himpsl-Gutermann, Monika Musilek-Hofer, Andrea Varelija-Gerber, Nina Grünberger work at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Education (IBS) at the Vienna University of Teacher Education. Full text
Abstract:
This, the first biography of film director Ridley Scott, investigates the life and moving-image work of a major cinema artist. Ridley Scott is a supreme visualist who applies artistry to telling motion picture narratives. The influence of his early work in commercials, television projects, short films, and music videos is explored. The arc of his life experience is examined to provide a total picture of the man, with emphasis on the look and content of his films. Each Ridley Scott film is presented from a series of views: conception, production, postproduction, critical and social reactions, box office results, and impact on his long and continuing career. Scott’s ability to make and release feature films on a regular timetable and run a multifaceted production company at the same time reveals his stamina and work ethic. Thematic patterns in Ridley Scott’s filmography give further insight into his artistic personality; he repeatedly examines subjects such as war, the nature of the male of the species, and the strength of women. Scott deals with these themes through hands-on collaboration with screenwriters and film craft artists such as the director of photography, production designer, and editor. The book embraces the concept that Ridley Scott is a complex artist driven to apply his art in a constant flow of projects. This biography will fill in many gaps of the life and films of this British-born director, who is known and respected by audiences, film critics, and scholars all over the globe.

Bishop, Ryan, and Sunil Manghani, eds. Seeing Degree Zero. Edinburgh University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474431415.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In the fields of literature and the visual arts, 'zero degree' represents a neutral aesthetic situated in response to, and outside of, the dominant cultural order. Taking Roland Barthes' 1953 book Writing Degree Zero as just one starting point, but with reference to broader historical discourse that picks up on critical notions of 'zero', 'zero degree', and the 'neutral, this volume examines the historical, theoretical and visual impact of the term and draws directly upon the editors' ongoing collaboration with artist and writer Victor Burgin. The book is composed of key chapters by the editors and Burgin, a series of collaborative texts with Burgin and four commissioned essays concerned with the relationship between Barthes and Burgin in the context of the spectatorship of art. It includes an in-depth dialogue regarding Burgin's long-term reading of Barthes and a lengthy image-text, offering critical exploration of the Image (in echo of earlier theories of the Text). Also included are translations of two projections works by Burgin, Belledonne and Prairie, which work alongside and inform the collected essays. Overall, the book provides a combined reading of both Barthes and Burgin, which in turn leads to new considerations of visual culture, the spectatorship of art and the political aesthetic. Taken together, the volume argues that the critical concept of 'zero degree' presents a common, underlying interest threaded through the work of Roland Barthes and Victor Burgin. With respect to literature and the visual arts, it specifies a 'neutral' aesthetic situated in response to and outside of the dominant cultural order. This book provides an historical, theoretical and visual exploration of this term as it pertains to the writing and art practices of both Barthes and Burgin.

Abstract:
In her introduction to the 1831 “Standard Novels” edition of Frankenstein, Mary Shelley accedes to the ongoing requests that she explain how she “then a young girl, came to think of, and to dilate upon, so very hideous an idea?” After describing a bit about her childhood, Mary then describes the gathering of her, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and their friends in the cold, wet summer of 1816 and the challenge issued by Lord Byron to “each write a ghost story.” After suffering from “that blank incapability of invention which is the greatest misery of authorship,” Mary finally conceives of the central image of the revivification of the creature and its abandonment by his creator. Mary also describes the contributions that Percy made to the original work and describes as merely stylistic the alterations she made between the original and the 1831 edition.

Abstract:
Parisians’ interest in photography’s potential as a historical medium gained increasing purchase after World War II, as exemplified by the celebrations of the Bimillénaire de Paris, a public festival to commemorate Paris’s two thousandth birthday, the two millennia since the arrival of Julius Caesar. Exhibitions, press coverage, and books sold photography to the world as the future of studying the past. Faced with the specter of Paris—and France’s—global decline, writers, magazine editors, and municipal officials nonetheless leaned heavily on old prints, paintings, and their historical styles in order to call forth better times from the city’s venerated past. They contributed to Paris’s visual vocabulary, a set of standard image subjects and styles that knit the past into the present both on the printed page and in the historical imagination.

Full text
Abstract:
Now fully revised and updated with the latest imaging techniques and technology and covering even more conditions than before, this new edition of The ESC Textbook of Cardiovascular Imaging provides extensive coverage of all cardiovascular imaging modalities, and is produced in collaboration with the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging with contributions from specialists across the globe and edited by a distinguished team of experts. It not only discusses the principles of individual modalities but also clearly demonstrates the added value each technique can bring to the treatment of all cardiac diseases. Richly illustrated with colour figures, images, and tables and using a wealth of newly available evidence to link theory to practice, it demonstrates how these techniques can be used in the diagnosis of a range of cardiovascular diseases. Learning how to apply them in practice is made easy with videos and imaging loops online, and it contains information on cutting-edge technical developments in echocardiography, CT, CMR and hybrid imaging, as well as imaging's current role in cardiac interventions, such as identifying cardiac structures, helping to guide procedures and exclude possible complications. The application of imaging modalities in conditions such as valvular and coronary heart disease, heart failure, cardiomyopathies, peri-myocardial disease, adult congenital heart disease and aortic disease, is also extensively considered.

Full text
Abstract:
Few periods in history are so fundamentally contradictory as the Baroque, the culture flourishing from the mid-sixteenth to the mid-eighteenth centuries in Europe. When we hear the term ‘Baroque,’ the first images that come to mind are symmetrically designed gardens in French chateaux, scenic fountains in Italian squares, and the vibrant rhythms of a harpsichord. Behind this commitment to rule, harmony, and rigid structure, however, the Baroque also embodies a deep fascination with wonder, excess, irrationality, and rebellion against order. The Oxford Handbook of the Baroque delves into this contradiction to provide a sweeping survey of the Baroque not only as a style but also as a historical, cultural, and intellectual concept. With its thirty-eight chapters edited by leading expert John D. Lyons, the Handbook explores different manifestations of Baroque culture, from theatricality in architecture and urbanism to opera and dance, from the role of water to innovations in fashion, from mechanistic philosophy and literature to the tension between religion and science. These discussions present the Baroque as a broad cultural phenomenon that arose in response to the enormous changes emerging from the sixteenth century: the division between Catholics and Protestants, the formation of nation-states and the growth of absolutist monarchies, the colonization of lands outside Europe and the mutual impact of European and non-European cultures. Technological developments such as the telescope and the microscope and even greater access to high-quality mirrors altered mankind’s view of the universe and of human identity itself. By exploring the Baroque in relation to these larger social upheavals, this Handbook reveals a fresh and surprisingly modern image of the Baroque as a powerful response to an epoch of crisis.

Abstract:
During the early 1940s, journalists observed that after years of men controlling women’s fashion, Hollywood had become “a fashion center in which women designers are getting to be a big power.” In a town where “the working girl is queen,” it was women who really knew how to dress working women. Edith Head’s name dominates Hollywood costume design. Though a relatively poor sketch artist who refused to sew in public, Head understood what the average woman wanted to wear and knew better than anyone how to craft her image as the-one-and-only Edith Head. However, she was one of many women who designed Hollywood glamour in the studio era. This chapter juxtaposes Head’s career with that of a younger, fiercely independent designer who would quickly upstage Head as a creative force. In many senses, Dorothy Jeakins’s postwar career ascent indicated the waning of the Hollywood system and the powerful relationship between female designers, stars, and fans.

The Journal to Stella, Jonathan Swift's letters to Esther Johnson, or 'Stella', and Rebecca Dingley, written between September 1710 and June 1713, offers an extraordinary commentary on Swift's experiences in London during the most politically active and exciting years of his career and evidence of his evolving relationship with the two women. This edition seeks for the first time both to situate the letters alongside Swift's other works and to place them within their original political, historical and cultural contexts. It brings together a combination of printed work and manuscript to present the most complete and accessible text possible, enhanced by the use of the latest digital image analysis techniques to reinstate previously indecipherable material. In addition to a new critical introduction and appendices, there is also a biographical appendix derived from recently available resources.

Abstract:
Neuroanatomy: Draw It to Know It, Second Edition teaches neuroanatomy in a purely kinaesthetic way. In using this resource, each neuroanatomical pathway and structure is learned by drawing, and through this process, memorable and reproducible schematics for the various learning points in neuroanatomy are created in a hands-on, enjoyable, and highly effective manner. In addition to this unique method, this resource also provides a remarkable repository of reference materials, including numerous anatomic and radiographic brain images, muscle-testing photographs, and illustrations from many other classic texts, which all enhance the learning experience. This new edition adds "Know-It" points to each chapter, providing high-yield learning methods that separate the essential from the advanced topics. It engages the reader in a direct manner while covering both the advanced level of detail needed as well as retaining the simplistic approach used in learning this challenging subject.
