Angels are a common motif in the World, and in the West. Not just in religion (and, by extension, philosophy), but also in art and its myriad expressions. There are many ways to imagine (that is, to make an image of) angels, and their etymology is just as varied. Abstract. The angel is a mythological character common to the Turkic peoples. Along with the spread of Islam and the glorification of God, its angels also became popular and praised. The duties and responsibilities of the four great angels given in the Qur’an, as well as people’s views and understanding of them, have been mentioned in the works written over the centuries and have become synonymous with kindness and honesty, purity and chastity. The article focuses on the use of everyday religious legends, fairy tales, and mythological stories about an angel in Turkic peoples and Kazakh poetry.

Abstract In his lengthy Tractatus super Psalmos, Hilary of Poitiers states only twice that humans are to “live the life of the angels.” Nevertheless, these rare statements seem to undermine both the role of the human body in eschatological life and the christocentrism of Hilary’s soteriology. This article was prompted by the newest reedition of O. A. Dobiash-Rozhdestvenskaia’s well-known book about the cult of Michael the Archangel in the Latin Middle Ages. Based on this exemplary book and medieval Russian literary texts, the author of this article raises the question of the dialectic between the typical and the peculiar in the veneration of Michael the Archangel in the Russian Orthodox tradition. The typical features, i. e. the ones that resemble the features that Dobiash-Rozhdestvenskaia found in the European material, prove to be by far more numerous than the peculiar features.
