Abstract:
In the later Middle Ages, the parish churches of England were populated not simply by parishioners and clergy, but by a community of images: paintings on the walls, depictions in stained glass, and sculptures carved in wood, alabaster, or metal. Lit by beeswax and tallow candles and adorned with gifts of rosaries, textiles, and votive offerings, they held the gaze of worshippers, forming a series of devotional foci within the parish church. In England, most of these images have disappeared, swept away by the reforms and iconoclasm of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. They survive as references in contemporary written sources, in decorative schemes exposed during nineteenth-century restoration works, and in museum and art gallery collections. This chapter considers the evidence and assesses the archaeological contribution to current understandings of imagery in medieval religion and belief.

Abstract:
This authoritative reference work presents a full image of the Prince of Darkness as he appears throughout traditional theology, mythology, art and literature, and popular culture. This nonsensationalist encyclopedia examines contemporary images of the devil and sorts out the many different forms these images take. Although much of the myths relating to Satan derive directly or indirectly from the Christian tradition, the key sources of diabolical images today are horror movies, heavy metal music, and conservative Christian literature. This encyclopedia gives a brief overview depicting the history and transformation of the meaning of the Prince of Darkness, and 300 entries cover subjects like the angel of death, backward masking (messages revealed when songs are played backward), neopagan witchcraft, UFOs, and The Satanic Bible. Extensive appendixes include the l992 FBI study of satanic ritual abuse, the most influential document ever written on the subject, as well as sample satanic scriptures and a satanic wedding ceremony.Satanism Todayalso includes a chronology, bibliographies, and references.

Abstract:
This concluding chapter briefly turns to Joyce’s final work, Finnegans Wake (1939). Joyce’s cacophonous ‘book of the dark’, with its many references to cinema, forms the centre of a discussion of the emergence of sound film. The importance of touch in both silent and sound film is restated through reference to the film criticism of Bryher, Dorothy Richardson, and Gertrude Stein, and Chaplin’s City Lights (1931), a late silent film focusing on Chaplin’s relationship with a blind flower-seller. The complex interrelationship between sound and image in both film and Finnegans Wake is contemplated through gestalt theory and multi-perspectival ‘figure–ground images’. The chapter concludes by returning to Ulysses, to consider the never-produced Reisman–Zukofsky screenplay and the ways in which the film would, and would not, have affirmed a phenomenological reading of Joyce’s text.

Abstract:
This book is designed to be both a quick guide and a reference text for radiographers and other staff who perform imaging during surgical procedures. Over 40 of the most common procedures are covered in detail, from initial setup to sending final images, with sections on patient positioning, C-arm approach, anatomy, surgical hardware, and alternative techniques. These include cases related to orthopaedics, urology, paediatrics, neurology, and other branches of medicine. Each chapter covers both surgical and imaging techniques, to give the radiographer a better idea of what is required in terms of imaging and technique, along with comprehensive positioning graphics and accompanying high-quality radiograph images. The techniques and methods demonstrated are fully explained, and will allow staff to confidently perform imaging for procedures not covered in the text. Also included are sections on the practical skills required for working in theatres (such as team work and safe practice), infection control, radiation protection, exposures, and image quality, as well as discussions about the function, systems, and usage of intraoperative imaging equipment. This includes both image intensifier (II) systems and the newer flat-panel detector systems. Image artefacts and the effects of under- and overexposure are also covered, with examples of radiograph images and details on how to remedy them. Each chapter is separated by specialty and body region for quick reference and ease of navigation, while key points and imaging considerations are highlighted in each procedure for emphasis.

Abstract:
This volume is a collection of essays on unusual topics in optics, with a humorous bent and references to pop culture. We examine why flames are yellow, why Newton said there were seven colors (including indigo), how to produce a miniature image of a mermaid on a shoestring budget, why ultraviolet light kills vampires, and other topics.

Abstract:
This book examines imagery of the body politic in the works of Cicero and his contemporaries and explores its impact on the politics of Rome in the first century BCE. Emphasis throughout is on the ideological underpinnings of such images and their uses as a means of persuasion. Chapter 1 reads the well-known fable of Menenius Agrippa as a paradigm for late-republican invocations of the embodied state. Chapter 2 examines imagery of disease and healing, focusing especially on connections with political violence. Chapter 3 considers claims of wounding and mutilating the republic. Chapter 4 explores references to the body politic’s demise in invective and consolations. Political oratory provides much of the evidence of these chapters, but is everywhere supplemented by other sources. Chapter 5 historicizes prior discussions by focusing on a single controversial image, that of murdering the fatherland, in the aftermath of Caesar’s assassination.

Abstract:
This monograph offers design for fast and reliable technique in the dense motion estimation. This Multilevel Optimization for Dense Motion Estimation work blends both theory and applications to equip reader with an understanding of basic concepts necessary to apply in solving dense motion in a sequence of images. Illustrating well-known variation models for dealing with optical flow estimation, this monograph introduces variation models with applications. A host of variation models are outlines such as Horn-Schunck model, Contrast Invariation Models and Models for Large Displacement. Special attention is also given to multilevel optimization techniques namely multiresolution and multigrid methods to improve the convergence of the global optimum when compared to using only one level resolution in the context of computer vision. This monograph is a robust resource that provides insightful introduction to the field of image processing with its theory and applications. Overall, Multilevel Optimization for Dense Motion Estimation is highly recommended for scientists and engineers for an excellent choice for references and self-study.
