Abstract:

This study investigated the influence of Tyler Perry's House of Payne and Meet the Browns on black viewers' racial identity, based on a survey of 145 members of four predominantly African American churches in the Central Florida area. Mirroring Allen, Dawson, and Brown's (1989) model of an African American racial belief system, this study proposed that both shows would positively influence three dimensions of the black identity including closeness to blacks, black separatism, and the belief in positive stereotypes about blacks, while negatively influencing the dimension that emphasizes negative stereotypes about blacks. Socioeconomic status and religiosity were also hypothesized to predict exposure to both shows. The results show that while House of Payne positively influenced two dimensions of the black identity including closeness to blacks and the belief in positive stereotypes about blacks, Meet the Browns did not have a statistically significant relationship with any of the dimensions of the black identity. Additionally, results showed mixed support for the relationship between socioeconomic status, religiosity, and show exposure. While education had a negative relationship with exposure to both House of Payne and Meet the Browns, the income variable revealed no significant results with either show. Lastly, religiosity was shown to be a significant predictor of exposure to House of Payne, but not Meet the Browns. The findings suggest that Perry's shows may be considered by viewers as more beneficial than harmful to viewers to their racial identity and experience, which contradicts the critiques of his images as reverberating with negative stereotypical images of the past. Findings also suggest the importance of education and religion to black socialization patterns.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In South Africa, black-back jackal (BBJ) predation of sheep causes heavy losses to sheep farmers. Different control measures such as shooting, gin-traps and poisoning have been used to control the jackal population; however, these techniques also kill many harmless animals, as they fail to differentiate between BBJ and harmless animals. In this project, a system is implemented to detect black-backed jackal faces in images. The system was implemented using the Viola-Jones object detection algorithm. This algorithm was originally developed to detect human faces, but can also be used to detect a variety of other objects. The three important key features of the Viola-Jones algorithm are the representation of an image as a so-called ”integral image”, the use of the Adaboost boosting algorithm for feature selection, and the use of a cascade of classifiers to reduce false alarms. In this project, Python code has been developed to extract the Haar-features from BBJ images by acting as a classifier to distinguish between a BBJ and the background. Furthermore, the feature selection is done using the Asymboost instead of the Adaboost algorithm so as to achieve a high detection rate and low false positive rate. A cascade of strong classifiers is trained using a cascade learning algorithm. The inclusion of a special fifth feature Haar feature, adapted to the relative spacing of the jackal’s eyes, improves accuracy further. The final system detects 78% of the jackal faces, while only 0.006% of other image frames are wrongly identified as faces.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Swartrugjakkalse veroorsaak swaar vee-verliese in Suid Afrika. Teenmaatreels soos jag, slagysters en vergiftiging word algemeen gebruik, maar is nie selektief genoeg nie en dood dus ook vele nie-teiken spesies. In hierdie projek is ’n stelsel ontwikkel om swartrugjakkals gesigte te vind op statiese beelde. Die Viola-Jones deteksie algoritme, aanvanklik ontwikkel vir die deteksie van mens-gesigte, is hiervoor gebruik. Drie sleutel-aspekte van hierdie algoritme is die voorstelling van ’n beeld deur middel van ’n sogenaamde integraalbeeld, die gebruik van die ”Adaboost” algoritme om gepaste kenmerke te selekteer, en die gebruik van ’n kaskade van klassifiseerders om vals-alarm tempos te verlaag. In hierdie projek is Python kode ontwikkel om die nuttigste ”Haar”-kenmerke vir die deteksie van dié jakkalse te onttrek. Eksperimente is gedoen om die nuttigheid van die ”Asymboost” algoritme met die van die ”Adaboost” algoritme te kontrasteer. ’n Kaskade van klassifiseerders is vir beide van hierdie tegnieke afgerig en vergelyk. Die resultate toon dat die kenmerke wat die ”Asymboost” algoritme oplewer, tot laer vals-alarm tempos lei. Die byvoeging van ’n spesiale vyfde tipe Haar-kenmerk, wat aangepas is by die relatiewe spasieëring van die jakkals se oë, verhoog die akkuraatheid verder. Die uiteindelike stelsel vind 78% van die gesigte terwyl slegs 0.006% ander beeld-raampies verkeerdelik as gesigte geklassifiseer word.

Esta pesquisa se propõe a analisar a revista Semana Illustrada, dirigida pelo prussiano Henrique Fleiuss, com especial atenção para as representações do negro e do tema da escravidão. O periódico circulou no Rio de Janeiro entre 1860 e 1876 e é pioneiro no que se refere ao uso de imagens na imprensa. As novas tecnologias, associadas à demanda por imagens, incitaram o surgimento e posterior consolidação da imprensa ilustrada. A invenção e a popularização da fotografia evidenciavam uma sociedade ávida por imagens e que estava em pleno processo de transformação e elaboração de uma educação visual. Nesta pesquisa, a reflexão sobre as imagens presentes no periódico Semana Illustrada que se referem ao negro e ao escravo tem como objetivo entender a visão que este veículo de comunicação tinha sobre o assunto, como parte das questões cotidianas da sociedade oitocentista do Rio de Janeiro na segunda metade do século XIX. O contexto brasileiro se revela peculiar, uma vez que se tratava de uma sociedade que se pretendia moderna, mas que convivia ainda com grande contingente de mão de obra escrava. Ao estudar essas imagens, descortina-se a cultura visual de um tempo emblemático para o Brasil.
This research aims to analyse the magazine Semana Illustrada, managed by the prussian Henrique Fleiuss, focusing on the representation of black people and slavery. The magazine circulated in Rio de Janeiro between 1860 and 1876 and plays a pioneer role concerning the use of images in the press. The new technologies associated to the demand for images incited the appearing and consolidation of illustrated press. The invention and popularization of photography evinced a society avid for images and in process of transformation and elaboration of a visual education. This research intends to reflect upon the images found in Semana Illustrada that refers to the black people and the slave in order to understand the vision of this vehicle of communication about the subject as part of social life in Rio de Janeiro by the second half of nineteenth century. The brazilian context is peculiar once there was a society pretending to be modern, that nevertheless cohabited with a big contingent of slave work force. Study this images is to discover the visual culture of an emblematic time for Brazil.

Minha tese teve como base a busca de imagens de mulheres negras, para tentar contar uma história, aquela que aparece em álbuns e histórias para jovens e crianças. Essas imagens me indicam possibilidades para a aplicação da Lei n 10.639/3. Nesses espaçostempos tão plurais, repletos de cores, identidades e significados podemos trabalhar de uma maneira simples seguindo um currículo único? A tese principal da minha pesquisa é buscar entender a importância dessas publicações que crescem significativamente em nosso país, nos últimos anos, em práticas curriculares possíveis. Esse aumento de produções de álbuns, conjugado a uma forte vertente editorial visando à publicação de literatura que resgata a história da África, reforçado por uma linha voltada para o público infanto-juvenil se relaciona à expansão de ações de movimentos sociais, relacionados à igualdade social de negros. Tudo isto reforçou a necessidade de um comprometimento governamental, através de leis, decretos e reformas educacionais. Desse modo pesquisei, utilizando esse material, buscando compreender sua importância para a discussão da questão da educação étnico-cultural e racial e na desconstrução social do preconceito e da discriminação racial direcionados à população negra. Nossa base teórica se encontra em Stuart Hall, Franz Fanon, Kabenguele Munanga, Nilma Gomes, Raul Lody, Nilda Alves, Michel de Certeau, Boris Kossoy, Arlindo Machado, Armando Silva, entre outros tantos.
My thesis was based on the search for images of black women, in order to try to tell a story, one that appears in albums and stories for teenagers and children. These images suggest to me a number of possibilities for applying Law No. 10.639/3. In these space-times that are so plural and so full of colors, identities and meanings, is it possible for us to work in a simple way following a single curriculum? The main thesis of my research has been to try to understand the importance of these publications, which have, in recent years become increasingly prevalent in our country, in relation to possible curricular practices. This increase in the production of albums, combined with a strong editorial bias towards the publication of literature that revives African history, and reinforced by a line aimed at the child/teen audience, is related to the expansion of initiatives by social movements aimed at social equality for black people. All this has reinforced the need for a commitment by government, in the form of laws, decrees and educational reforms. Thus I researched, using this material, trying to understand its importance to the debate over the issue of ethnic-cultural and racial education and to the social dismantling of prejudice and racial discrimination aimed at the black population. Our theoretical foundations are based on Stuart Hall, Franz Fanon, Kabenguele Munanga, Nilma Gomes, Raul Lody, Nilda Alves, Michel de Certeau, Boris Kossoy, Arlindo Machado, Armando Silva, among many others.

Abstract:

This dissertation examines the dominant images of Black women presented in the first five years of Staffrider magazine. It limits itself mainly to the analysis of short stories written in the English language. Since most of the contributors were men, many of the stories analysed here are by male Writers. A few poems by Black women have been analysed in addition to the short stories. The thesis focuses on and answers the question of whether 'positive' characterisation of Black people, seen as central to Black Consciousness writing, includes women or not. The analyses take into account race, class and gender and are informed by the theories of womanism and Black feminism(s). As much of the literature shows an overt bias in favour of the ideology of Black Consciousness, the first chapter serves an introductory function. It concentrates on an examination of the ideology of Black Consciousness and an interrogation of the literature to which it gave rise. Briefly sketching the development of BC, it examines the nature of BC literature. This entails both an study of the characteristics of the literature as well as an examination of the place of Black women in Black Consciousness discourse and literature.

Abstract:

American culture supports a colorist system that values lighter skin tones in women of color, and these norms are communicated in some part by images present in our society. Previous research has not explored the impact that colorist images may have on the psychological health and appearance concerns of women of color. The purpose of the current study was to determine whether exposure to images of Black women who more closely meet colorist beauty standards (i.e., lighter skin) would negatively impact women’s psychological health and general appearance concerns. It was hypothesized that participants exposed to colorist images of Black women would experience greater increased negative affect, skin tone dissatisfaction, and appearance concerns; and greater decreased self-esteem. It was hypothesized that these relationships would be weaker in Black women who self-identify more closely with their ethnic background. It was further hypothesized that these relationships would be stronger in women with higher levels of internalization, poorer satisfaction with their skin tone, darker skin tones, greater desire for lighter skin, and lower trait levels of self-esteem. Results suggest images of Black women with varying skin tones do not impact the appearance concerns, negative affect, or self-esteem of Black women exposed to such images. However, trait self-esteem, self- identification with Black values, skin tone dissatisfaction and desired skin tone were found to moderate these relationships. This study makes an important contribution to the area of appearance and body image concerns specific to women of color. The dissemination of this research may contribute to the improvement of body dissatisfaction constructs specific to women of color.

Abstract:

This study examines the scholarship of J. A. Rogers and Rogers' use of vindicationist African-American history as a tool to illustrate his own ideas about humanism. Rogers' use of One-Drop ideology, Great Man history, and the philosophy of the bran of history combined into a subtle tool for undermining the entrenched racial attitudes of white supremacy during the twentieth century. This study was based on the premise that Rogers' use of vindicationism as a tool for humanism made his particular brand of vindicationist history relevant to Africana history. A historiographic critical approach to vindicationist history is used in order to determine what relevancy vindicationism has to Africana history and to what extent Rogers' humanism infused subtle arguments, contributed to Rogers' relevancy to Africana history. An examination of the goals and methodologies of other vindicationist scholars was utilized to find points of similarity and difference with Rogers' scholarship. This contrast of Rogers with other vindicationists allowed the salient points of Rogers' relevancy to be distilled. The conclusions of this study suggest that Rogers' relevancy is in his contribution to Humanism. Rogers attempts to demystify and debunk the idea of race and the history of racial intermixing, along with his championing the idea of the unity of humanity are more relevant than his vindicationist history. Additionally this study shows that both the critics of Rogers and those vindicationist historians who have followed in his footsteps have missed the subtlety in his writing. Both have viewed Rogers merely as a vindicationist. Whereas vindicationism' s tableau of black heroes is a reactionary response to Eurocentric history, Rogers' use of One-Drop ideology to debunk the idea of race was revolutionary.

Esta dissertação pretende analisar a construção da narrativa de Crônica da casa assassinada, de Lúcio Cardoso, investigando as cenas pictóricas que se formam por meio do preenchimento dos vazios textuais e da interpretação dos elementos ficcionais que contribuem para que a obra provoque a interação do leitor com sua linguagem poética. Neste sentido, o trabalho deverá se voltar para a observação do processo de formação de imagens, fruto da interação entre a dinâmica movimentação dos ambientes da obra com os conflitos dos personagens, levando-se em consideração a função social desempenhada pela propriedade Chácara dos Meneses. Serão também observados os atributos da narrativa que a caracterizam como estrutura provocadora de variadas possibilidades interpretativas. A análise será realizada à luz da Teoria do efeito estético, de Wolfgang Iser, bem como de outras teorias e críticos que auxiliaram a pesquisa a que me propus realizar.
This paper aims to analyze the narrative construction in Crônica da casa assassinada, by Lucio Cardoso, by investigating the pictorial scenes which are built up by the filling in of textual blanks and the interpretation of those fictional elements which help the novel to bring out a readers interaction with its poetic language. In this sense, the work should be geared to observing of the image-formation process, resulting from the interaction between the dynamic movement of the environments in the narrative, with the characters conflicts, taking into account the social role played by the Chácara dos Meneses property. The narrative attributes which feature the novel as a structure fostering various interpretative possibilities should be observed. The analysis shall be carried out in light of Theory of äesthetic response, by Wolfgang Iser as well as other theories and other critics opinions, which have been instrumental in the research I undertook to carry out

Abstract:

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seropositive men on highly active antiretroviral therapy treatment (HAART) who experience lipodystrophy syndrome (LD), a side effect of HAART, rate themselves as more depressed than those who did not experience LD(Crane et al., 2008). Furthermore, men who rated their LD symptoms as more severe also scored higher on depression measures than men who experienced less severe symptoms. It is unknown these findings can be generalized to other groups of HIV positive individuals. The current study seeks to fill this gap in the literature by exploring the associations between LD, body image, and depressive symptoms in an archival sample of HIV positive Black women. This study aims to describe the body changes associated with HAART in a Black female sample and explore the relationships between LD, body image, depression, and quality of life. Findings supported past research indicating a correlation between depression and poor body image but did not indicate that body image quality of life moderated the relationship between perceived body changes and depression. Results expanded on the literature by indicating that perceived body changes may be more distressing to Black women with HIV than objective changes. Lastly, findings suggested that Black women may have inaccurate perceptions of their own body changes. These findings are particularly informative for healthcare workers who treat HIV+ women. It is imperative that they consider clients’ self-report as well as clinical symptoms.

Abstract:

Inúmeras são as formas de entendermos uma imagem, analisando as mesmas dentro de uma coleção didática de historia de segundo segmento, procuramos analisar de maneira imparcial e coerente o impacto gerado pela lei 10639/03 sobre tal material e seus objetivos quanto à resignificação do negro dentro da história do Brasil. Para isso abrimos dialogo com teóricos que nos auxiliaram a entender a amplitude do conceito de imagem, tal como buscamos o debate a cerca da importância da mesma para o ensino de história, para tal buscamos mapear as atividades legislativas relacionadas à referida lei, e os programas governamentais que fomentam a produção editorial didática no Brasil. Diante desse caminho enfrentamos caminhos tortuosos e contraditórios, mas que nos levaram a deliberar a necessidade de novos estudos, esses mais amplos no que concerne o campo de pesquisa e mais aprofundado no que se refere ao próprio conceito de imagem, e a questão de resignificação do negro. Several are the ways in which we understand an image. By analyzing them in a school history collection for the second stage of elementary education, we seek to analyze the impact created by the Law 10639/03 on such material and its purposes as regards the resignification of black people within Brazilian history in an impartial, coherent manner. Thus, we open a dialogue with theorists who helped us understand the amplitude of the concept of image, and we also aim at a debate on the importance of the latter for history teaching. In order to do that, we seek to survey the legislative activities related to the aforementioned law and the governmental programs that promote the school publishing production in Brazil. We faced tortuous, contradictory ways, but they led us to deliberate on the need of new studies that are broader as regards the research field and more thorough in relation to the concept of image itself and the issue of resignification of black people. However, we may say that this research is a material that, as the title itself conveys, contributed to the study of the image of black people, and we see the advance and the persistence found in history schoolbooks after the year of 2003.

Cette thèse concerne l’aérodynamique de pales d'extrémité transsonique. Ces pales sont conçues pour maximiser le rendement en croisière, tout en générant la traction requise au décollage. Elles ont des profils fins et peu cambrés, travaillant à forte incidence au décollage, ce qui peut entraîner l’apparition d’un tourbillon de bord d’attaque (TBA). Or ce TBA présente des similitudes avec les tourbillons d’apex d’aile Delta, connus pour leur capacité à générer de la portance tourbillonnaire.Cette étude consiste à examiner l’intérêt du TBA pour les performances aérodynamiques.La démarche a consisté dans un premier temps à caractériser la topologie du TBA sur une maquette représentative d’une pale d’ Open Rotor, à l'aide d'essais PIV résolus en temps et de calculs RANS k-omega SST, et à évaluer la capacité de la simulation RANS à reproduire les caractéristiques d’intérêt pour cette étude. Un algorithme a été développé afin d'estimer la contribution de ce TBA à la portance à partir du champ de pression pariétal RANS.Afin d'expliciter l'influence des paramètres géométriques et de fonctionnement de la pale sur la portance tourbillonnaire, un modèle 1D de la portance tourbillonnaire a été développé puis couplé à la méthode de l'élément de pale.Les premières comparaison de géométries à iso-traction ont montré que la portance tourbillonnaire permet de générer la traction requise au décollage avec une surface alaire plus faible. Ces résultats ouvrent de nouvelles perspectives pour la conception de géométries avec un meilleur rendement en croisière
This thesis deals with the aerodynamic properties of propeller blades. Those blades are designed to maximise cruise efficiency, while achieving the target thrust at take-off. Their thin, low-cambered profiles must work at high incidence at take-off, which may give rise to a leading-edge vortex (LEV).The topology of this LEV looks similar to Delta wing LEVs, which are known to generate vortex lift.the aim of this study is to explore the probable impact of the LEV on lift at take-off in order to reconsider propeller blade designs. The approach first consisted in caracterising the LEV topology on a model blade representative of an Open Rotor front blade, using both Time-Resolved PIV and RANS k-omega SST calculations. The comparison between both methods demonstrated the ability of RANS calculations to reproduce the LEV characteristics of interest to this study.Then, the LEV contribution to lift was evaluated thanks to an algorithm developed to estimate vortex lift contribution from RANS wall pressure fields.In order to explicit the influence of the blade's geometrical and functioning parameters on vortex lift, a 1D vortex lift model was developed and coupled to the Blade Element Momentum Theory.The first blade geometry comparative studies at iso-thrust showed that vortex lift enables to generate target thrust at take-off with a lower blade surface. This opens new perspectives for the design of blade geometries with enhanced cruise efficiency

The purpose of this thesis is to examine to what extent representations of double jeopardy and the stereotypical images of African American females: Mammy, Matriarch, Sapphire, and Strong Black Woman emerge in the blues lyrics of Alberta Hunter, Gertrude "Ma" Rainy, Memphis Minnie, and Victoria Spivey, using the theoretical framework of Black feminist rhetorical critique. The findings in this research entail several meanings regarding the lives of African American women during the 1920s and 1930s. Representations of racism, sexism, and classism also appear in the theme of relationships with various subthemes. The focus of this study is to explore the evolution of Black music and examine the role women have played in both the development and advancement of the blues genre. Additionally, the study will explore various concepts of cultural identity development in order to establish the process of how identity is constructed and negotiated in African Americans specifically African American women.

Utilizing an Afrocentric methodological framework, this dissertation research seeks to examine the general public perceptions of African American women as reflected in rap music videos, and to determine how African American females perceive the images that are presented of them in rap music videos. This study explores Black women's representation through analyses of top ten rap music videos from January to September 2010 and conceptualizes the effects of these representations on Black female viewers. This study also explores the reception of Black women's images in rap music videos as they are potentially exported to other cultures. This project is a multi-method examination including questionnaires and focus group sessions, exploring the effect of rap music video content on the representation of African American women, society's perceptions of African American females, and how when given an opportunity to construct their own media image, how would African women be represented.

Stereotypes and myths are created by media to simplify and mystify reality. The two are used to form negative stereotypical images that are used as tools of social oppression in today’s white patriarchy. This essay will focus on how Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye depicts black womanhood and motherhood and resists the reductive images of black women through the narrative technique. In the text we find the stereotypical images of the Mammy and the Matriarch in the character Pauline "Polly" Breedlove, both simplifying and mystifying black motherhood but also condescending towards African-American family constellations. The text resists these images by making readers inhabit Polly who at first fits in to the two archetypes, only to then give us additional information and use an engaging narrative technique that invites the reader to decide if Polly really is the Mammy and the Matriarch.

The majority of studies that have examined the prevalence of eating disorders have sampled women from western societies. Theoretical models have emphasised Western socio-cultural factors as central in the development of eating disorders. Consequently, eating disorders have been conceptualised as disorders from Western industrialised countries where white women experience social pressures toward thinness. Within these societies, white women are believed to be at risk of developing eating disorders, while black women are not exposed to the same social pressure regarding weight. In the literature, it has been argued that African women are 'protected" from developing eating disorders because traditionally a fuller figure has been more acceptable. However, findings from recent studies are beginning to reveal a considerable degree of body perception dissatisfaction among black women, indicating that this debate is far from settled. In the African-American culture, in terms of body perceptions, people are not expected to be all built to look alike. A full, yet healthy body has represented strength, power and prosperity in the African culture throughout history. However, the thin ideal for women seems to be spreading across all ethnic groups. Incorrect body perceptions, dissatisfaction with one's body's appearance and a drive to be thin can lead to erratic eating patterns such as self-starvation and purging, which in turn can result in eating disorders such as Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa. In view of the above, this study investigated body perceptions among black female high school learners in the Cape Metropole. The participants were 702 girls between 13 and 19 years old in ex DET high schools in grades 8 to 11. The study attempted to determine participants' body weight dissatisfaction; whether they perceived themselves as overweight, underweight or of normal weight; and whether they expressed influence by the media, as well as family and peers, on their body perceptions. The sample was divided into two age groups, namely a younger group of 13 - 15 years and an older group of 16 - 19 years. The chi-square test was used to test the statistical significance of the data. The results revealed a statistically significant difference between the younger age group (13-15 years) and the older age group (16-19 years) regarding body weight dissatisfaction and body weight perceptions. Furthermore, the expressed influence by the media and family/peers also show statistically significant results.

Abstract:

This dissertation project addressed the implementation of a Dialogue on the topic of Sexuality in the Black Pentecostal church, at Church of the Lord Jesus Christ Today, Inc. (COTLJCT) in Douglasville, GA. In continuing the ministry of Jesus Christ, all Christian leaders, including leaders in the Black Pentecostal church have a great responsibility to imitate Christ through their actions. While providing ministerial care that addresses moral issues encountered by the Christian community and the world, Christian leaders must always consider the question, What Would Jesus Do? The contemplation of this inquiry is necessary towards delivering the type of service and care provided by Jesus. This raises the question whether Black Pentecostal church leaders respond to moral issues within the church community in a manner that is reflective of how Jesus handled matters during his ministry. For the purposes of this dialogue, are leaders of the Black Pentecostal church responding to the issue of women and unwed pregnancies in ways that indicate they have contemplated the question What Would Jesus Do? Are leaders of the Black Pentecostal church responsive to this issue in ways that demonstrate the love, compassion, and forgiveness of Jesus? The response to these questions is a resounding “NO.” Years of personal observation in the Black Pentecostal church have revealed harsh treatment by leaders, and the Christian community towards women and sexuality issues. This punitive behavior, normally surrounding the occurrences of non-marital pregnancies, has consisted in women being openly shamed, alienated, ostracized, and rejected from Christian fellowship. These actions and outcomes, which are not reflective of the ministry of Jesus nor his love, compassion, and forgiveness, warrant a serious discussion. Black Pentecostal church leaders have failed to construct a dialogue on this subject, as it affects the lives of their parishioners. The working hypothesis of this project is that leaders in the Black Pentecostal church have a great task by God to assist in the spiritual growth and development of his people. As such, the Black Pentecostal church must be at the vanguard in instituting a dialogue on women and sexuality. In particular, these discussions should address the sexist and negative treatment directed towards women for their sexual encounters and pregnancies from non-marital relationships. Leaders in the Black church have a responsibility to create an atmosphere where sexuality issues can be freely discussed in the church. These discussions should lead to the restoration and reconciliation of women in their relationship with God and the Church community. However, in times past and presently, congregational leaders in the Black church have been “silent” on the topic of sexuality. In the midst of their silence, leaders have openly condemned women for non-marital affairs, and have ostracized, marginalized, and rejected them from any involvement in ministry. Therefore, the scope of this project was to implement a constructive dialogue in the church, in collaboration with women at COTLJCT. This dialogue highlighted the negative treatment directed towards women for their diversion from biblical and doctrinal norms of the Black Pentecostal church. The project addressed reasons why the topic on sexuality has been taboo in the Black Pentecostal church, and the motivation for the sexist treatment of female parishioners. The goal of this dialogue was to ultimately dispel the negative behaviors and stereotypes directed towards women and their sexuality. The final aim of the project was to create positive images of God’s creation, which ultimately leads to a constructive course of action to sexuality matters by Christians and leaders in the Black Pentecostal church. Theologically, it is believed that the examples provided by the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ illustrate the role of Christian leaders as “servants.” Jesus’ model of ministry also demonstrates the responsibility of his servants, which is to focus on attending to the needs of the marginalized, the rejected, and the outcasts. As follows, the project highlighted biblical text that validated this type of service that meets the necessities of the poor, liberates the captive, heals the brokenhearted, and accepts the rejected, as reflected in Luke 4: 18-19. The project presented biblical scripture from the Old and New Testament that has shaped the doctrinal position of the Black Pentecostal church in terms of a lifestyle of “Holiness,” and the stance against non-marital sexual relationships. In describing the holiness/purity codes of the church, the researcher advocated against the church’s practice of shaming and ostracizing women for their choices to have sex and children outside of marriage. The project highlighted how the ministry of Jesus clearly demonstrated love, compassion, acceptance, and forgiveness towards women, for their sexual indiscretions, as referenced in John 8:1-11. Additionally, the project provided a detailed analysis of Galatians 621-2. This scripture specifically addresses the responsibility of Christians to exhibit the spirit of love, compassion, and gentleness, as they endeavor to restore persons, who have fallen to sin. In summation, leaders in the Black Pentecostal church have been called to illustrate love in their service of restoring the lives of God’s people. The doctoral dissertation project was conducted in three phases over a four (4) month period, (June 2012 through September 2012), involving seven (7) sessions. Phase I: Sexuality, and Sexuality Distorted - part 1 and part 2; Phase 11: Christian Ethics: The Do’s &. Don’ts Based on Biblical Principles - part 1 and part 2; and Phase III: Real Talk: “Sex in the Church” - part 1 and part 2. The effectiveness and overall success of the project was measured by the following four (4) goals: 1. Initiate a dialogue with women on the subject of sexuality. 2. Positively impact women with a better understanding of sexuality issues and a new outlook that leads to constructive responses of love and compassion. 3. Maintain participation of at least 15 women in all three phases of the project. 4. Celebrate participants of the project dialogue. Based on evaluations, testimonials, and reflections from this project, the outcome of this journey was a success. This project dialogue on sexuality issues resulted in the lives of women being liberated, healed, and transformed for the Glory of God!

Resumo: Este trabalho discute e analisa a imagem fotográfica no espaço mítico e ritual do candomblé, religião de origem negro-africana estabelecida no Brasil. Propõe a religação entre o rito contemporâneo e o mito ancestral, evidenciada pela fotografia. Apresenta o candomblé por meio do corpo, matriz geradora do "corpo-terreiro", um a condição para a manutenção do patrimônio cultural afro-brasileiro. Estuda distintas práticas fotográficas que sistematizam um conhecimento acerca dessa tradição religiosa: a "imagem-renascimento", em Pierre Verger; a "imagem-tabu", em José Medeiros; e a "imagem-oferenda", em Mario Cravo Neto. Descreve a visualidade dessa manifestação sócio-cultural no caderno de notas visuais "E o silêncio nagô calou em mim", registrando uma experiência fotográfica e ritual.
Abstract: This work discusses and analyses the photographical images in the mythical and ritual context of the African-Brazilian religion candomblé, proposing a reconnection between the contemporary ritual and the ancestral myth, as evidenced by phtography. This work considers the body a matriz that constitutes an important element for the maintenance of an African-Brazilian cultural heritage. The text analyses the imagery produced on the theme, by the protographers Pierre Verger, José Medeiros and Mario Cravo Neto, studying the distinct visual practices that embody the knowledge concerning these religious traditions. It concludes by describing the construction of a visual context within candomblé, wich resulted in a visual notebook narrating an imagetic and ritual experience.

Abstract:

The following study was developed to examine the factors, when present in the lives of low-income individuals, equal dependency, i.e., education level, employment history, number of children, and what can be done to change these factors. The research effort sought to prove that introduction of the independent variable (Positive Self-Image Training) into a self-help program would enable a select group of women to reach a level of relative self-sufficiency. The research design used was quasi-experimental. The population under investigation was a group of single black female heads of household, age 18 and older, participating in a government sponsored self-sufficiency program in Atlanta, Georg ia. A standard self-concept test, Tennessee Self Concept Scale, was administered to 20 single black mothers before and after positive self-image training. The anticipated outcome was formulated in the hypothesis: "A select number of Project Self-Sufficiency participants who receive positive self-image training will show a measurable difference in terms of improved self-concept over the participants who only receive the prescribed treatment." The major findings of the study showed that the experimental group improved in terms of self-concept while the control group showed little or no change. Although the quantitative outcomes were smaller than anticipated, the qualitative outcomes more than supported the general hypothesis of the study.

Abstract:

The body cathexis and "ideal" female figure for Black college females and White college females were investigated. The Body Cathexis Scale was administered to determine students' level of satisfaction with their bodies. Self reports of each student's ideal female measurements were also examined. It was hypothesized that Black college females tend to possess greater satisfaction with their body image than White college females. Black college females were hypothesized to report less restrictive measurements for what they believe would make up the ideal female figure than White college females. Results showed that some significant differences were found between Black and White college females. Of the 46 items on the Body Cathexis Scale, significant differences between Black and White college females were found on seven items with five indicating higher satisfaction of Black college females and two indicating that White college females had higher satisfaction. Of the five measurements of ideal female figure, only one differed significantly with the Black college females possessing a less restrictive measurement. Thirty-nine items on the Body Cathexis Scale and four on the ideal female figure measurements showed no significant difference. Therefore, the hypothesis of Black college females being more satisfied with their bodies and reporting less restrictive ideal female figure measurements than White college females was not supported.

This study examines the pornographic images of black women from Sara Baartman, the “Venus Hottentot,” to the Middle Passage, the Auction Block, Plantation Life, Harlem Renaissance, Blaxpomploitation movies, mainstream contemporary cinema, and pornography. It is based on the premise that throughout history black women’s images have been pornographic. The researcher found that the pornographic images present in today’s visual media are outgrowths of the debilitating, racialized and sexualized images of black women historically. The conclusion drawn from the findings suggests that black women’s images in cinema continue to subjugate and objectify black women on and off screen.
