Pierwsza, Imagologia i Kant, przypomina o koncepcjach wiążącego imagologię z filozofią Immanuela Kanta Manfreda Bellera i Joepa Leerssena, który przypisuje imagologowi antyesencjalizm opozycyjny do esencjalizmu samych images. Druga część, Images a hermeneutyka, czyli Ricoeurowskie dodawanie/rozszerzanie zmierzające do Pełni przedstawia ten sposób poznawczego postępowania, który dodaje do siebie przeciwstawne koncepcje filozoficzne (Nietzscheańsko-Freudowską i Kantowską), opierając się na odwołaniach do dwu mitów – Boga i Natury (reprezentujących arché i telos). Trzecia część, Images a konstrukcje.

Abstract:
Abstract The aim of this study is to analyze the image of dark women in the bîspel Die Königin von Mohrenland written by Der Stricker, one of the most popular medieval poets. The paper explores and detects the means by which the Moorish queen and her folk are represented and instrumentalized in the short epic entitled bîspel. The depiction of the Moor as the ›dark other‹, ›dark evil‹ etc. or an ›alter ego‹ illustrates premodern approaches to the construction of a stereotype of dark people based on racist, ethnic and religious differences. Such stereotypical depiction contributes to the establishment of the dark other as an enemy. The research questions are discussed from an intercultural perspective which encompasses a discussion of gender, identity and colour (white / dark) and at the same time taking into consideration the historical background of confrontations between the orient and the occident in medieval history.

Abstract:
Imagology and the study of literary stereotypes in die teaching of Afrikaans as additional language Imagology is the study of national and ethnic stereotypes as represented in literature. These stereotypes are represented in literary images of identity and alterity when intercultural contact is portrayed in texts. The main concepts of Imagology are discussed to provide educators with a scientific framework in the teaching of Afrikaans as additional language, with specific reference to literature teaching. Learners from various cultural backgrounds bring with them their own stereotypes. Studying literary youth texts that portray images of national stereotypes can facilitate the process of intercultural understanding and reconciliation. Learners can be exposed to the representation of Self and Other in prescribed Afrikaans literary texts without their self-image being threatened, yet discovering the relativity of values, and learning respect for their own culture as well as for that of the target language. The background, scientific approach and principles of Imagology are described, as well as important concepts. By using Imagology as a literary tool in studying Afrikaans texts in the additional language classroom, literature teaching will include looking at the narrative and functions of youth literature to discern psychological and ideological focalisation, together with its influence on negative and positive representations of Self and Other.

Abstract:

Autorka, stawiajac pytanie o związki, jakie zachodzą pomiędzy imagologią a przekładem, poszukuje odpowiedzi na przykładzie polskich przekładów dzieł literatury czeskiej (Hašek, Hrabal, Havel). Bliskie związki przekładu i imagologii, wynikające w znacznym stopniu z przyjętej w naszych kulturach „niewidzialności tłumacza” (Venuti 1995), powinny więc stanowić jeden z obszarów badań posthumanistyki.

Abstract:
In the middle of the 16th century many people left the Low Countries for England as a result of religious persecution and economic hardship. Several thousand of these people, mainly from the Southern Netherlands, went to Norwich, the second largest city in England. Some of them wrote letters to friends and family members whom they left behind in the Low Countries, which indicate that they valued the religious freedom and economic opportunities in Norwich. This suggests that they had a positive image of the local English people. However, if one looks at official English documents, the picture is more mixed. While some English valued the economic contribution that the migrants made, others were concerned about the effect on the local workforce, and measures were taken to restrict their economic activities. Furthermore, some people in Norwich had Catholic sympathies and this was an important motivating factor in a plot to eject the migrants from the city, which ultimately failed. In short, this article uses the situation in Norwich in the late 16th century as a case study for exploring how different sources can create contrasting images of how one group of people views another.

Abstract:
Abstract This study aims to analyze the religious language on social media of "Islam Populer." This study uses a qualitative approach by analysing media texts. The media package analysis is performed using the William A. Gamson and Modigliani framing analysis method. The unit of analysis is carried out on the core frame and condensing symbols on "Islam Populer" social media accounts; Youtube channel, Facebook Fanpage and Instagram as well. The results of this study conclude that the packaging of religious language in "Islam Populer" accounts was carried out by referring to the sources of Islamic normativity, namely alqurân and alhadîts. The construction of religious language on social media was built as a religious practice that is packaged through a series of symbols both verbal and non-verbal. In the context of cyberculture, the construction of this idea is conducted by subjectively reshaping reality. Subjective reality is built through text and image construction. At this point, the language of religion in social media becomes a kind of religious imagology that is in the area of ambiguity, namely between the sacred and the profane.. Abstract:

The author considers the problem of creating images, namely its psychological and ontological aspects. Based on the assumption that mental representation is not a mimetic reproduction of objective reality, but a reference to mutually imputed collective knowledge, the author discusses various factors of this situation. The concept proposed by the author is based on presumption that the measure of the compatibility of the image and its designate is the content dispersion occurring in society, i.e. the number of different points of view. In the constructivist model, imaging is based on communication as a modus of the social system, in this case there is a diversification of viewpoints, and the compatibility of the image with its designate is close to 0.

Abstract: How do three women writers from Angola and Mozambique represent, in novels written in 2009 and 2011, the historic movement of forced return to Portugal in 1975? How are individual memoirs and history articulated, and what are the implications of narrative focus? These and other questions are the result of the historical and theoretical framework represented in the novels: that of colonial and post-colonial Portugal. The concept of “return” allows us to deal with individual and national identity issues, and suggest some reflections on a theme that gains ground if we cross different theoretical tools: Post-Colonial Studies, Imagology, Gender Studies and Narratology. Keywords: returnees; identity; subjectivity; colonialism; post-colonialism.

Abstract:
Summarising recent developments in postclassical narratology and imagology, the article traces affinities between the two disciplines in order to observe the challenges that await the researchers of image and narrative in what Baudrillard called the simulation culture. Two case studies presented in the article (one devoted to Instagram visual narratives, the other – to a YouTube advertising campaign) illustrate challenges for the study of eventfulness, narrativity, and fictionality, and suggest - in line with the postulates of Mark C. Taylor and Esa Saarinen – that a radical change of educational and communicative practices is needed in contemporary Western societies. A change of this sort, it is postulated, might be instigated by the collaboration of researchers in visual studies and narrative theory.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to examine the relationship between Goran Skrobonja and Dаn Simmons’ works, as well as the way Anglo-American speculative fiction influenced Skrobonja. In order to do that, I compared two fiction works by these authors: Simmons’ novella Flashback from his colection Lovedeath (translated to Serbian by Skrobonja) and Skrobonja’s Tihi gradovi / Quiet Cities, one of the most renowned works of contemporary speculative fiction in Serbian literature. Suvin’s theory of science fiction and his term novum were used in order to draw parallels between these stories. In my analysis I have concluded that not only Skrobonja and Simmons use the same novum, but their stories also share a number of similari- ties, which suggest an intertextual relationship. Then, I conducted an imagological comparative analysis. First of all, I analysed the right-wing discourse which heavily influenced Simmon’s novella and foreshadowed author’s subsequent engagement in politics, thus ending his amiable correspondence with Skrobonja. Bearing that in mind, Tihi gradovi can be read as a negation of Flashback and Simmons’ poetics, as well as his right-wing world view. As a results, Tihi gradovi differ from the rest of Skrobonja’s work, primarily by defying the poetics of Anglo-American specula- tive fiction, which have heavily influenced Skrobonja for the most of his career. In this story, he has showed that his relationship towards his literary forefathers is not epigonal, but much more nuanced and sceptical. Thus, the wide recognition Tihi gradovi attained in contemporary literary criticism is recognized as justified, as this story is truly one of Skrobonja’s finest achievements.

Abstract:
Since the 1970s, children's literature research has developed a number of approaches, from simple ideological criticism to more sophisticated applications of postcolonial theory, to analyse how, and to what end, members of other national, cultural, racial and ethnic groups are represented in texts for children. However, a field of study within comparative literature, imagology, which specifically addresses the cultural construction and literary representation of national characters in literature, has not yet made much impact. This review article will present its origins and methods of investigation as well as sketch areas in children's literature of imagological interest, which have been or are still waiting to be productively addressed, to show what the domain can gain from this approach.

Abstract:
The article dwells on the origin and development of linguistic imagology, a new field of research which studies the linguistic aspect of foreign image representation in fiction literature, mass media and other types of discourse, as well as the linguistic means of reflecting the relations between the auto-image (image of “the self”) and the hetero-image (image of “the other”). The specific approach offered in the paper is based on the analysis of nine multicultural novels about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict written in English. It consists in singling out two degrees of estrangement between the auto- and the hetero-image, with alienation and the image of an alius making an accent on differences and misunderstanding, and alterity together with the image of an alter, on similarities and propinquity. Lexico-semantic and stylistic analysis of the novels, carried out in the article, reveals linguistic tools which are employed to represent the hetero-image as either an alius or an alter.

Abstract:
Imagology, the study of national and cultural images as represented in textual discourse, is a fruitful approach for disciplines dealing with textual change, such as translation studies. Both imagology and translation studies have gradually extended their area of research, which has revealed growing commonalities. Journalistic texts have for instance been included in research that was previously almost exclusively dealing with literary discourse. Moreover interest in imagological research, sometimes related to the distribution of a promoted national or cultural self-image, has now also grown in countries outside of Europe. Future perspectives for findings on image spread through translation are offered through collaboration with existing research in sociology and psychology.

Abstract:
The paper explores Isaac Newton’s understanding of the origins of historical imagology. In his study of imagology as practice, Newton proved to be not only a historian and natural philosopher, but also as a mythographer. He attempted a comprehensive taxonomic and chronological analysis of the pagan (gentile) deities of the ancient Mediterranean peoples. From Newton’s point of view, pagan religions, myths and poetry associated with them, were the foundations of historical imagology as a practice of interpreting the images of “foreign peoples” in the ancient world. The paper contains commented fragments of the author’s translation from Latin into Russian of a number of Newton’s archival works on mythography and the origins of imagology. The translation from Latin into Russian is made for the first time. The author declares no conflicts of interests.

Abstract:
The article examines the conceptual foundations and scientific, sociocultural and philosophical prerequisites of imagology, the field of interdisciplinary research in humanitaristics, the subject of which is the image of the “Other” (foreign country, people, culture, etc.). It is shown that the imagology appeared as a response to the crisis of comparatives of the mid-20th century, with a special role in the formation of its methodology played by the German comparatist scientist H. Dyserinck and his Aachen School. The article analyzes the influence on the formation of the imagology of post-structuralist and constructivist ideological-thematic complex (auto-reference of language, discursive history, construction of social reality, etc.), linguistic and cultural turn in the West in the 1960s. Shown is that, extrapolated to national issues, this set of ideas and approaches has led to a transition from the essentialist concept of the nation to the concept of a nation as an “imaginary community” or an intellectual construct. A fundamental difference in approaches to the study of an image of the “Other” in traditional comparativism and imagology, which arises from a different understanding of the nation, has been distinguished. It is concluded that the imagology studies the image of the “Other” primarily in its manipulative, socio-ideological function, i.e., as an important tool for the formation and transformation of national and cultural identity. The article identifies ideological, socio-political factors that prepared the birth of the imagology and ensured its development in western Humanities (fear of possible recurrences of extreme nationalism and fascism in post-war Europe, the EU project, which set the task of forming a pan-European identity). It is concluded that the imagology, on the one hand, has actualized an important field of scientific research — the study of the image of the “Other”, but, on the other hand, in the broader cultural and historical perspective, marked a departure not only from the traditions of comparativism and historical poetics, but also from the humanist tradition of the European culture, becoming part of a manipulative dominant strategy in the West. To the culture of “incorporation” into a “foreign word” in order to understand it, preserve it and to ensure a genuine dialogue of cultures, the imagology has contrasted the social engineering and the technology of active “designing” a new identity.
