This thesis develops comprehensive mathematical models for an advanced drying technology Intermittent Microwave Convective Drying (IMCD). The models provide an improved physical understanding of the heat and mass transport during the drying process, which will help to improve the quality of dried food and energy efficiency of the process, as well as will increase the ability of automation and optimization. The final model in this thesis represents the most comprehensive fundamental multiphase model for IMCD that considers 3D electromagnetics coupled with multiphase porous media transport processes. The 3D electromagnetics considers Maxwell's equation and multiphase transport model considers three different phases: solid matrix, liquid water and gas consisting water vapour and air. The multiphase transport includes pressure-driven flow, capillary diffusion, binary diffusion, and evaporation. The models developed in this thesis were validated with extensive experimental investigations.

Detta är en teoretisk uppsats som jämför ett antal olika relevanta teoretikers problematisering av begreppen IMF conditionality, nationellt ägandeskap och statssuveränitet samt dessa teoretikers syn på relationen mellan dessa. Jag har analyserat innehållet i ett antal olika litterära källor och jag refererar till ett flertal antal teoretiker. De ekonomiska lån som IMF ger till stater är villkorade med åtaganden som mottagarlandet måste uppfylla. Dessa villkor hänvisas ofta till som IMF conditioanlity. Statssuveränitet och nationellt ägandeskap definieras som en stats kontroll av sin egen inhemska politik, i denna uppsats begränsad till att gälla den ekonomiska politiken. Statssuveränitet går att definiera i ett vidare och i ett snävare perspektiv. I den snävare så är det regeringens kontroll av dessa frågor som är avgörande medan det i den bredare handlar om folkets kontroll av dessa frågor. Vissa teoretiker anser att IMF conditionality underminerar statens suveränitet och statens nationella ägandeskap av sin inhemska ekonomiska politik och att dessa villkor därigenom också försvagar folkets möjlighet till självbestämmande. Dessa teoretiker anser med andra ord att staten håller på att förlora kontrollen över den politiska utvecklingen och då staten är det medium genom vilket folket är hänvisat till att utöva inflytande genom allmänna val så undermineras på samma gång folkens möjlighet att påverka den politiska utvecklingen. Statssuvuränitet undermineras således både i snäv och bred definition på grund av IMF conditionality. Vissa teoretiker anser att statssuveränitet endast försvagas i dess bredare och inte i dess snävare genom att folket förlorar i ägandeskap genom att regeringen genom IMF conditionality gör sig i högre grad oberoende av folkets vilja. Ytterligare andra teoretiker försvarar IMF conditionality och hävdar att det hela handlar om ett partnerskap mellan mottagare och givare där låntagarnationen inte har gett upp ägandeskap och att IMF conditionality finns som en garant för att reformerna genomförs på ett effektivt sätt. Mottagarnationen har frivilligt tecknat ett avtal med IMF och har frivilligt gått med på att genomföra dessa reformer så det nationella ägandeskapet har inte förminskats menar dessa teoretiker. Jag kommer i denna uppsats fram till att IMF conditionality de facto har en negativ inverkan på staters nationella ägandeskap och på dessa staters suveränitet både i bred och i snäv definition.

Population synthesis models (PSMs) are fundamental tools to study the star formation history and IMF of unresolved stellar populations using spectral features. This work presents a new set of PSMs constructed using theoretical isochrones and two state-ofthe- art synthetic spectral libraries. The BT-Settl and Munari libraries were chosen for their ability to predict the observed values of Lick-type and IMF-sensitive indices in individual stars of the solar neighbourhood. The BT-Settl library was used to sample the cool main sequence stars and the Munari library for the rest of the evolutionary phases. The PSMs cover a range of metallicities with [Fe/H]= 0, -1.31 and -1.81 for scaled-solar and α-enhanced metal mixtures. The models were used to study the behaviour of the IMF indices defined in the literature and the results are in good agreement with what other PSMs have determined. The PSMs in this work predict a strong degeneracy between age, metallicity and IMF. I used the models to study which are the main evolutionary phases contributing to each IMF-sensitive index and found that most indices reach their final integrated values before the turn off. The post-main sequence stars contribute mainly to the continuum of these bands. Uncertainties in the the effective temperature of the isochrones can affect IMF estimates. The PSMs were applied to extragalactic globular clusters (GCs) and early-type galaxies (ETGs) using data from the literature. I determined the ages, metallicities and IMFs of these systems using index combinations in the optical and infrared. I explored how the morphology of the Horizontal Branch (HB) and dynamical evolution (which are key uncertainties in the modelling of GCs) can affect the IMF predictions. In a population with a Milky Way IMF, dynamical evolution can make the IMF indices mimic a bottom-light IMF. HB morphology has no impact on the IMF estimates at low [Fe/H]. In the IMF index-index diagrams for GCs, the results are significantly affected by the unknown sodium abundances of these systems. Using the PSMs in this work the best index combination to determine the IMF is CaH1 and TiO2. The ETGs and the [Fe/H]=0 GCs appear to have a bottom-heavy IMF with x ~ 3:0. These results are discussed in the work.

Eftersom det här arbetssättet är så pass nytt och ännu inte trätt ikraft, har det mesta av materialet som vi tagit del av kommit från en RPS-rapport som utarbetats av personer i den nationella arbetsgruppen, samt från en intervju med en person som kommer att beröras av resultatet i rapporten. Vi har utifrån materialet valt att begränsa oss till fem frågeställningar, varför vill man byta från den gamla IMF till den nya särskilda taktiken, vilka är förändringarna i taktiken, vilka förändringar införs i polismannens kroppsskyddsutrustning, vilka förändringar införs beträffande de fordon som används, vilken nytta skulle ett maskeringsförbud göra?. Med detta bakgrundsmaterial så har vi kommit fram till att huvudskälet till varför RPS vill byta taktik, är att förhindra att nya situationer uppstår likt den som inträffade i Göteborg 2001. För att åstadkomma den ökade beredskapen som detta kräver, ska kompetensen på de polismän som är verksamma vid dessa ingripanden höjas genom utbildningar i olika nivåer.</p>

This thesis looks into the relationship between the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) since the PRC regained its IMF membership in 1980. It initially analyzes the China-IMF relationship with socialization theoretical framework, attempting to explore how the IMF has socialized China into accepting neoliberal international economic norms. The research borrows Alastair Johnston’s ‘microprocesses’ of socialization to assess the processes of IMF socialization via financial assistance, technical assistance, and surveillance and policy advice for China. The research shows socialization has taken place to a moderate degree, as IMF programs have had some impacts on China’s domestic economic and financial liberalization. Yet no evidence shows the IMF has convinced China to fully redefine its economic principles and norms. Socialization turns out to be an inadequate analytical approach to analyzing the China-IMF relationship in the long run. The research continues with a supplementary theoretical framework: principal-agent theory. Principal-agent theory overcomes some of the technical deficiencies in socialization theory, and helps us understand more thoroughly China’s role in the IMF and the governance of international financial economy in general in the long run. China is regarded as the principal, and the IMF as China’s international organization agent. Driven by its objective of acquiring a larger influence in the governance of international financial economy, China delegates several tasks to the IMF so that the Fund can accomplish these tasks more efficiently than if China took other cooperative or unilateral approaches. China-IMF interactions are assessed following a four-stage analytical approach based upon the key concepts of principal-agent theory. China’s and the IMF’s institutional features and functions are examined as important factors of the China-IMF relationship. They include China’s preferences regarding IMF operation, China’s role in IMF governance, and China’s impact among IMF staff. Based on this examination, the consequences of China’s delegation of tasks to the IMF are assessed. This dissertation indicates that the IMF plays a limited role in assisting China to access larger influence in the governance of international financial economy, because of the IMF’s westerndominated staffing rules, unbalanced governance structure, preference deviation from China, inadequate resources, and China’s incapability to facilitate strict controls on the IMF. The thesis contributes to the so far thin literature on the China-IMF relationship with selected case studies such as IMF Article IV Consultation for China, China’s role in IMF quota and voting share reforms, IMF staff with Chinese nationality, and so on. The research provides a model for analyzing the relationship between China and international organizations with a combination of socialization and principal-agent theoretical frameworks. Last but not least, it extends the research subject of principal-agent theory in international organization Studies to include an emerging market economy state as the principal, which correctly implies the increasing influence of emerging market economies in the governance of international political economy.

Conditionality refers to the program policies required by international institutions, such as the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF), in order for countries to be eligible to receive access to resources provided by such institutions. In the case of the IMF these resources are available in the form of loans. The proper role of conditionality as a component of the Fundâ s financial arrangements with developing nations has been a topic of debate in both the political science and economic fields of study. On the political science side the argument has centered on whether or not austere and structural conditionality can in effect cause political dissent in the developing nations, and whether or not the process of conditionality violates the sovereign rights of nations. In this research study three Latin American countries (Brazil, Argentina, and Costa Rica) were utilized as case studies to try and determine whether or not their was a casual link between the implementation of IMF conditionality and instances of political dissent manifested as protests, riots, and strikes. Evidence of political dissent directly related to the implementation of IMF conditionality was found in all three case studies at varying levels. The instances of political dissent were then analyzed individually and as a group to try and determine specific cause, group dynamics, and the economic context in which they took place. The study concluded that as practiced in the 1990s and early 2000s conditionality can interfere with the democratic process in developing nations.<br>Master of Arts

We present the results of the investigation of the Initial Mass Function at the end of the Main Sequence in young open clusters. We find that over a large range in age and environment the IMFs are similar to each other, and to recent determinations of the field star IMF. We have obtained V, I, and K band photometry of fields in the three relatively unembedded open clusters. The photometry reaches down to various masses in ech cluster: 0.08Mʘ for Praesepe, 0.04Mʘ for the Pleiades, and 0.15Mʘ for NGC 7160. We compare the methods for estimating the masses of young, embedded stars developed by Comeron et al. (1993) and by Strom et al. (1995) and show them to be in good agreement. Spectra in the 2 11m region of six low mass objects from Comeron et al. (1993) are also in agreement with the mass estimates using these methods. The spectrum of a brown dwarf candidate is used to place an upper limit on its mass of 60% of the minimum required for hydrogen burning. The IMFs from these four clusters plus NGC 2024 (Cameron et al. (1995)) are shown to be in agreement with each other. The composite MF can be fitted with a power law between 0.04 and 0.5Mʘ with a slope of -0.75 ± 0.3. There is no evidence for a cutoff at the bottom of the main sequence (0.08Mʘ); brown dwarfs appear to be abundant in open clusters. However, the slope of the MF is well above the value of ≲ -2 required for very low mass stars and brown dwarfs to contribute a significant portion of the mass of open clusters. The composite cluster MF also is in agreement with recent determinations of the field star IMF for stellar masses. The field star data do not extend into the brown dwarf range; however, if we extrapolate in accordance with the cluster MF, we conclude that brown dwarfs probably do not contribute significantly to the dark matter.

Previous issue date: 2015-04-14<br>A common feature in programs of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is the use of conditionalities, macroeconomic and structural measures that a requesting country should adopt to obtain an assistance package. The objective of this work is to conduct an empirical analysis of the economic and political determinants of such conditionalities. In particular, our main contribution consists in the development of a new measure of conditionality, fiscal adjustment, and its comparison with the most used in the literature, the number of conditions. We choose fiscal adjustment because it is an adequate proxy for program austerity, since its implementation carries economic and political costs. In the empirical exercise, we use data from 184 programs in the period of 1999 and 2012, and estimate how our two measures of conditionalities respond to the economic and political factors. Our results suggest that they are quite different. The main determinant of the number of conditions is the political proximity of the borrowing country to the Fund’s major shareholders, the members of G5. On the other hand, the main determinant of fiscal adjustment is the size of the government fiscal deficit. Finally, we did not find correlation between the size of fiscal adjustment and the number of conditions. These results suggest that the analysis of the content of IMF programs should take into account the different measures of agreed conditionality.<br>Uma característica comum nos programas do Fundo Monetário Internacional (FMI) é a utilização de condicionalidades, medidas macroeconômicas e estruturais que o país demandante deve adotar para obter um pacote de assistência. Neste trabalho, o objetivo é conduzir uma análise empírica dos determinantes econômicos e políticos das condicionalidades. Em particular, nossa principal contribuição consiste na construção de uma nova medida de condicionalidade, o ajuste fiscal, e a comparação desta com a mais utilizada na literatura, qual seja, o número de condicionalidades. Escolhemos o ajuste fiscal pois trata-se de uma medida adequada da austeridade de um programa, já que sua implementação acarreta custos econômicos e políticos para o país. No exercício empírico, utilizamos dados de 184 programas no período de 1999 a 2012, e estimamos como as nossas duas medidas de condicionalidades respondem aos fatores econômicos e políticos. Nossos resultados indicam que elas são de fato diferentes. Por um lado, o principal determinante do número de condicionalidades é a proximidade política do país tomador do empréstimo com os principais membros do Fundo, os países do G5. Por outro, a principal motivação do ajuste fiscal é o tamanho do déficit do governo. Por fim, não encontramos correlação entre o tamanho do ajuste fiscal e o número de condicionalidades. Tais resultados sugerem que a análise dos termos dos programas do FMI deve levar em conta os diferentes tipos de condicionalidades que são acordadas.

Um agente soberano sujeito a um choque estocástico deve tomar emprestado para suavizar seu consumo. O mercado financeiro internacional oferece seus fundos, contudo cobra um prêmio por dividir o risco sobre o choque com o governo. O FMI, embora sênior, empresta a uma taxa menor. Encontramos as condições sob as quais a presença do FMI em tal mercado é relevante e positiva ao agente emprestador. Tais condições dependerão do tamanho do prêmio de risco cobrado, que em nossa análise é dado exogenamente.<br>This paper addresses the role of the International Monetary Fund in the international monetary economy as a senior agent, as observed empirically. A sovereign agent subject to a stochastic shock must borrow to smooth out consumption. The international financial market offers fund, however it charges a premium for sharing the risk over the shock with the government. The IMF, however senior, lends at a lower rate. Hence, the sovereign government must choose its borrower. We find conditions under which the IMF presence in such market is relevant and positive to the borrowing agent. Such conditions will depend on the size of the risk premium charged, which in our analysis will be exogenously given

Stand des IMAF zu Beginn des Jahres 2006<br><br>
Zum 1. April 2005 wurde per Beschluss des Rektorats der Universität Potsdam das Interdisziplinäre Zentrum für Musterdynamik und Angewandte Fernerkundung (IMAF) an der Universität Potsdam eingerichtet. Diesem Beschluss gingen knapp zwei Jahre konzeptionelle, organisatorische und administrative Vorarbeiten voraus.
Inzwischen ist das IMAF also offiziell gegründet, der Vorstand wurde „bestellt“ (Prof. M. Mutti. Prof. E. Zehe, Prof. A. Bronstert), der Geschäftsführer bzw. wissenschaftliche Koordinator Dr. M. Kühling arbeitet in dieser Funktion seit Sommer 2005 und seit kurzem ist auch die 1. Version der Homepage des IMAF (http://www.uni-potsdam.de/imaf/) frei geschaltet.<br><br>
Auch die Infrastruktur des IMAF ist in der Entstehungsphase: Büroräume sind versprochen (wenn auch noch nicht bezugsfertig) im Haus 13 auf dem Campus Golm der Universität Potsdam und der 1. erfolgreiche Drittmittelantrag erbrachte 8 leistungsfähige Tischrechner und einen Server für das IMAF aus EU-Mitteln.
Wichtiger als die administrativen und organisatorischen Arbeiten sind aber die inhaltlichen Forstschritte. Hier ist die große Resonanz, die die Gründung des IMAF sowohl innerhalb als auch außerhalb der Universität gefunden hat, besonders erfreulich. Über 30 Angehörige des Zentrums sind inzwischen zu verzeichnen und es gibt bereits eine Reihe von wissenschaftlichen Projektinitiativen und Ideen für dieses Zentrum.<br><br>
Neben den wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten am IMAF ist ein zweites Hauptziel für dieses Zentrum die Entwicklung und der Ausbau eines strukturierten Ausbildungsangebotes für Musterdynamik und angewandte Fernerkundung. Dies sollen gleichermaßen Masterstudenten als auch Doktoranden der Universität Potsdam und der mit ihr assoziierten außeruniversitären Institute nutzen. Zudem werden Kurse und Weiterbildungsveranstaltungen mit nationalen und internationalen Experten angestrebt.<br><br>
Neben diesen positiven Entwicklungen gibt es auch (noch ??) über einige Mängel zu berichten: Das Sekretariat ist nach wie vor unbesetzt, die Finanzausstattung des Zentrums ist völlig ungenügend und die im Konzept für das Zentrum beantragte Wissenschaftlerstelle für Softwareanwendung ist nicht in Sicht. Für einen Erfolg des Zentrums ist es unbedingt notwendig, dass sich diese Situation deutlich verbessert!!<br><br>
Forschungsschwerpunkte des IMAF<br><br>
<u>Räumliche Muster und deren Struktur in der Umwelt</u><br><br>
Räumliche Muster sind in vielen naturwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen (Hydrologie, Ökologie, Geologie, Biologie, Chemie, Physik) von zentraler Bedeutung. Z.B. bestimmen die räumlichen (und zeitlichen) Muster von Bodeneigenschaften und Vegetation in ihrem Zusammenspiel mit den Mustern von Niederschlag und Strahlungsinput maßgeblich den Wasser- und Stoffhaushalt auf unterschiedlichsten Skalen und führen über Rückkopplung wiederum zu Veränderungen in Klima, Vegetation und Ökosystemen. Vom kleinräumigen Transport von Schadstoffen und von der Hochwasserentstehung bis zur Frage nach den regionalen und globalen Veränderungen von Klima, Vegetation und Landnutzung seien hier nur einige Problemkreise genannt, in denen Muster und Musterdynamik eine zentrale Stellung einnehmen. Darüber hinaus liefert die Betrachtung der zeitlichen Veränderung von räumlichen Mustern, in Ergänzung zur klassischen Erfassung dynamischer Prozesse in Form von Messungen lokaler zeitlicher Änderungen, eine völlig neue Perspektive auf Dynamik und eröffnet damit völlig neue wissenschaftliche Möglichkeiten.<br>
Aktuelle und sehr drängende Fragen innerhalb dieses Forschungsschwerpunktes sind unter anderem:<br><br>
• Analyse der generelle Raumstruktur von Geodaten (Variabilität, Struktur, Konnektivität);<br>
• Thematische Verbindungen verschiedener Datenebenen und Möglichkeiten für deren Assimilation;<br>
• Möglichkeiten und Grenzen des Skalenübergangs zwischen verschiedenen räumlichen Auflösungen und Informationsquellen;<br>
• Ableitung der zeitlichen Dynamik bzw. Entwicklung von großen flächenhaften Datenfeldern.<br><br>
<u>Angewandte Fernerkundung</u><br><br>
Wie keine andere Technik bietet die Fernerkundung in jeglicher Form (unter anderem Satelliten, flugzeuggetragene Sensoren, Wetterradar und auch geophysikalische Methoden) umfangreiche Möglichkeiten, räumliche Muster und deren zeitliche Veränderungen zu erfassen. Allen Methoden der Fernerkundung gemein ist, dass sie nur indirekte Ergebnisse liefern. Das heißt, es besteht nur ein mittelbarer Zusammenhang zwischen dem beobachteten Signal, meist der Reflektivität oder Emissivität elektromagnetischer Strahlung in verschiedenen Spektralbereichen (optisch oder Radar), und der eigentlich interessierenden Größe, wie dem Feuchtezustand der Vegetation, der Bodenfeuchte oder Bodenrauhigkeit, der Niederschlagsintensität, dem Zustand der Schneedecke oder der Ausdehnung eines Oberflächenfilms auf Gewässern. Ein Satellitenbild enthält beispielsweise immer die spektrale Signatur des räumlichen Musters mehrerer der oben genannten Einflussgrößen, was die Extraktion oder Diskriminierung der eigentlich interessierenden Größe erschwert.<br><br>
Dieser „vermischte“ Charakter der Fernerkundungsdaten bietet aber auch immense Chancen. So lassen sich durch geeignete Interpretationsverfahren aus jedem mit hohem finanziellem und technischem Aufwand erstellten Satellitenbild zahlreiche und im Detail völlig unterschiedliche Fragestellungen bearbeiten. Die Extraktion der gewünschten Information aus dem Fernerkundungssignal führt mathematisch gesehen meist auf die Lösung so genannter inverser, schlecht gestellter Probleme. Somit beinhaltet die interdisziplinäre Nutzung von Fernerkundung auch ein hohes methodisches Synergiepotential.<br><br>
Durch die heutigen technischen Möglichkeiten zur Archivierung auch sehr umfangreicher raumbezogener Informationen ist die Bearbeitung zu jedem beliebigen Zeitpunkt nach der Aufnahme möglich – zum Beispiel bis entsprechend lange Zeitreihen und/oder geeignete Interpretationsverfahren zur Verfügung stehen. Tatsächlich dürfte der weitaus größte Teil der raumbezogenen Informationen, die in den bisher erhobenen Fernerkundungsdaten stecken, nur in Ansätzen ausgewertet sein. Einer bereits sehr hoch entwickelten technischen Dimension der Fernerkundung steht ein gewisses Defizit im Umfang ihrer Anwendung in den verschiedenen naturwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen gegenüber.
Aktuelle und sehr drängende Fragen innerhalb dieses Forschungsschwerpunktes sind unter anderem:<br><br>
• Nutzung der räumlichen und inhaltlichen Breite von Fernerkundungsinformationen;<br>
• Verbindung mit automatisierten, u.a. geophysikalischen Methoden des „ground-truthings“;<br>
• Identifizierung der Grenzen bzgl. Repräsentanz der Daten (spektral, raum-zeitliche Auflösung);<br>
• Verbindung unterschiedlicher Methoden der Fernerkundung und der Geophysik.
Dieser Beitrag illustriert die o.g. Fragestellungen anhand einiger Darstellungen aus verschiedenen wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen und erläutert 2 Beispiele zu beabsichtigten Forschungsprojekten;<br>
• Erfassung und Bedeutung von Boden-Oberflächeneigenschaften auf die Abflussbildung von Landschaften;<br>
• Phänomene des Stofftransportes in homogenen vs. heterogenen Böden.

• Modelle derzeit weder in der Lage, alle ablaufenden Prozesse in die Betrachtung einzubeziehen, noch präzise Eingangsdaten bei der Beschreibung des Ausgangszustandes zu verarbeiten<br>

• Klassifizierung erfolgt mit überwachten Methoden unter Verwendung von Trainingsflächen im Datensatz, von denen die dort angebaute Frucht bekannt ist<br>
• in die Klassifizierung werden zusätzliche Informationen einbezogen (Fuzzy), die Auskunft über die Wahrscheinlichkeit des Auftretens der Frucht geben (Anbaueignung in Abhängigkeit von Hangneigung, Niederschlag, Höhenlage, Boden)
Die Ergebnisse dieser Klassifikationen sind meist nicht auf andere Landschaftsausschnitte und Anbaujahre übertragbar, weil die Ausprägung der Spektralsignatur einer Kultur durch veränderte Boden- und Witterungsbedingungen variiert.<br><br>
Lösungsansatz<br><br>
• auf Basis von Satellitendaten und Anbauinformationen aus 15 aufeinander folgenden Jahren (35 Aufnahmetermine) sollten von Witterung und Boden unabhängige Jahreskurven der spektralen Charakteristik wichtiger Ackerkulturen gewonnen werden, die den Wachstumsverlauf der Pflanzen beschreiben<br>
• diese Kurven sollen anstelle von Trainingsgebieten zur multitemporalen Klassifizierung von Daten eines Anbaujahres herangezogen werden
Schlussfolgerungen und Ausblick<br>
• Prinzipiell erscheint Vorgehen erfolgreich, jedoch in Abhängigkeit von der Brauchbarkeit der herangezogenen Szenen schwankt Güte des Ergebnisses noch<br>
• Verfahren stellt wesentlichen Fortschritt zu bisherigem Vorgehen auf Trainingsflächenbasis dar<br>
• ist zumindest im Untersuchungsgebiet immer wieder ohne weitere Kenntnis von Anbauinformationen anwendbar, lediglich exakte phänologische Datierung der dann verwendeten Aufnahmen erforderlich<br>

Die Präsentation gibt zuerst einen Überblick über mögliche Parameter für die Wasserhaushaltsmodellierung, die aus Fernerkundungs(FE)-daten generell abgeleitet werden können. Bei der Beschreibung der Ableitungsverfahren dieser Parameter aus (FE)-Daten wird auf die Landnutzung, Vegetationsindices und die reale Evapotranspiration (ETr) fokussiert.<br><br>
Die Verfahren zur Bestimmung der ETr aus optischen FE-Daten lassen grob wie folgt gliedern :<br><br>
• Direkte Ableitung der Evapotranspiration aus radiometrisch bestimmten Oberflächen-temperaturen<br>
• Ableitung von Modellinputdaten wie z.B. Globalstrahlung, Albedo, Blattflächeniondex LAI und NDVI aus FE-Daten zur Anwendung von SoilVegetation-AtmosphereTransfer- und Energiebilanzmodellen wie z.B. SEBAL (Bastiaansen et al . 1998)<br>
• Kombinierte Anwendung verschiedenster Sensoren wie SAR-ERS1, LANDSAT-TM, NOAA-AHVRR mit SVAT-Modellen und hydrologischen Einzugsgebietsmodellen
Die Validierung dieser Methoden wurde in verschiedenen Messkampagnen wie z.B. Lo-trex10E-HIBE, FIFE oder HAPEX-Sahel durchgeführt. Dabei wurde die aus dem entspre-chenden Sensor abgeleitete ETr mit gemessenen ETr-Raten von Ankerstationen innerhalb eines definierten Gebietes verglichen. Diese Ankerstationen leiteten die ETr aus Profil-, Ed-dy-Flux-, oder Szintillometermessungen ab. Durchgängige längere Zeitreihen der ETr sind nur mit FE-Daten mit hoher Wiederholungsrate wie z.B. NOAA-AVHRR, MODIS hoher Zeitauflösung möglich Mit Landsat-TM z.B. ergeben sich dagegen nur „Snap Shots“ der ETr von einzelnen Tagen. Daher wurden oftmals Multisensorverfahren d.h. Kombination von z.B. Landsat-TM mit NOAA-AVHRR eingesetzt oder die FE-Daten nur für die Erhebung zeitin-varianter Eingangsdaten (z.B. Landnutzung) und zur raumbezogenen Validierung der ETr-Berechnungen von hydrologischen Modellen verwendet. Im zweiten Teil des Vortrags wird ein Anwendungsbeispiel für den Versuch einer räumliche Validierung eines Wasserhaus-haltsmodells über NDVI-ETr-Datenprodukte aus Landsat-TM5-Daten für das Stobbergebiet. Ein weiteres Anwendungsbeispiel für die Einbindung von Landnutzungsdatenprodukten aus Landsat-TM5-Daten in die Wasserhaushaltmodellierung für das Ucker-Einzugsgebiet schliesst den Vortrag ab.

In order to better understand the geological boundary conditions for ongoing or past surface processes geologists face two important questions: 1) How can we gain additional knowledge about geological processes by analyzing digital elevation models (DEM) and satellite images and 2) Do these efforts present a viable approach for more efficient research. Here, we will present case studies at a variety of scales and levels of resolution to illustrate how we can substantially complement and enhance classical geological approaches with remote sensing techniques.<br><br>
Commonly, satellite and DEM based studies are being used in a first step of assessing areas of geologic interest. While in the past the analysis of satellite imagery (e.g. Landsat TM) and aerial photographs was carried out to characterize the regional geologic characteristics, particularly structure and lithology, geologists have increasingly ventured into a process-oriented approach. This entails assessing structures and geomorphic features with a concept that includes active tectonics or tectonic activity on time scales relevant to humans. In addition, these efforts involve analyzing and quantifying the processes acting at the surface by integrating different remote sensing and topographic data (e.g. SRTM-DEM, SSM/I, GPS, Landsat 7 ETM, Aster, Ikonos…).
A combined structural and geomorphic study in the hyperarid Atacama desert demonstrates the use of satellite and digital elevation data for assessing geological structures formed by long-term (millions of years) feedback mechanisms between erosion and crustal bending (Zeilinger et al., 2005). The medium-term change of landscapes during hundred thousands to millions years in a more humid setting is shown in an example from southern Chile. Based on an analysis of rivers/watersheds combined with landscapes parameterization by using digital elevation models, the geomorphic evolution and change in drainage pattern in the coastal Cordillera can be quantified and put into the context of seismotectonic segmentation of a tectonically active region. This has far-reaching implications for earthquake rupture scenarios and hazard mitigation (K. Rehak, see poster on IMAF Workshop). Two examples illustrate short-term processes on decadal, centennial and millennial time scales: One study uses orogen scale precipitation gradients derived from remotely sensed passive microwave data (Bookhagen et al., 2005a). They demonstrate how debris flows were triggered as a response of slopes to abnormally strong rainfall in the interior parts of the Himalaya during intensified monsoons. The area of the orogen that receives high amounts of precipitation during intensified monsoons also constitutes numerous landslide deposits of up to 1km<sup>3</sup> volume that were generated during intensified monsoon phase at about 27 and 9 ka (Bookhagen et al., 2005b). Another project in the Swiss Alps compared sets of aerial photographs recorded in different years. By calculating high resolution surfaces the mass transport in a landslide could be reconstructed (M. Schwab, Universität Bern).<br><br>
All these examples, although representing only a short and limited selection of projects using remote sense data in geology, have as a common approach the goal to quantify geological processes. With increasing data resolution and new sensors future projects will even enable us to recognize more patterns and / or structures indicative of geological processes in tectonically active areas. This is crucial for the analysis of natural hazards like earthquakes, tsunamis and landslides, as well as those hazards that are related to climatic variability. The integration of remotely sensed data at different spatial and temporal scales with field observations becomes increasingly important. Many of presently highly populated places and increasingly utilized regions are subject to significant environmental pressure and often constitute areas of concentrated economic value. Combined remote sensing and ground-truthing in these regions is particularly important as geologic, seismicity and hydrologic data may be limited here due to the recency of infrastructural development. Monitoring ongoing processes and evaluating the remotely sensed data in terms of recurrence of events will greatly enhance our ability to assess and mitigate natural hazards.

The rigorous development, application and validation of distributed hydrological models obligates to evaluate data in a spatially distributed way. In particular, spatial model predictions such as the distribution of soil moisture, runoff generating areas or nutrient-contributing areas or erosion rates, are to be assessed against spatially distributed observations. Also model inputs, such as the distribution of modelling units derived by GIS and remote sensing analyses, should be evaluated against groundbased observations of landscape characteristics. So far, however, quantitative methods of spatial field comparison have rarely been used in hydrology.
<br><br>
In this paper, we present algorithms that allow to compare observed and simulated spatial hydrological data. The methods can be applied for binary and categorical data on regular grids. They comprise cell-by-cell algorithms, cell-neighbourhood approaches that account for fuzziness of location, and multi-scale algorithms that evaluate the similarity of spatial fields with changing resolution. All methods provide a quantitative measure of the similarity of two maps.<br><br>
The comparison methods are applied in two mountainous catchments in southern Germany (Brugga, 40 km<sup>2</sup>) and Austria (Löhnersbach, 16 km<sup>2</sup>). As an example of binary hydrological data, the distribution of saturated areas is analyzed in both catchments. For categorical data, vegetation zones that are associated with different runoff generation mechanisms are analyzed in the Löhnersbach. Mapped spatial patterns are compared to simulated patterns from terrain index calculations and from satellite image analysis. It is discussed how particular features of visual similarity between the spatial fields are captured by the quantitative measures, leading to recommendations
on suitable algorithms in the context of evaluating distributed hydrological models.

Fluvial systems are one of the major features shaping a landscape. They adjust to the prevailing tectonic and climatic setting and therefore are very sensitive markers of changes in these systems. If their response to tectonic and climatic forcing is quantified and if the climatic signal is excluded, it is possible to derive a local deformation history.<br>
Here, we investigate fluvial terraces and erosional surfaces in the southern Chilean forearc to assess a long-term geomorphic and hence tectonic evolution. Remote sensing and field studies of the Nahuelbuta Range show that the long-term deformation of the Chilean forearc is manifested by breaks in topography, sequences of differentially uplifted marine, alluvial and strath terraces as well as tectonically modified river courses and drainage basins.<br>
We used SRTM-90-data as basic elevation information for extracting and delineating drainage networks. We calculated hypsometric curves as an indicator for basin uplift, stream-length gradient indices to identify stream segments with anomalous slopes, and longitudinal river profiles as well as DS-plots to identify knickpoints and other anomalies. In addition, we investigated topography with elevation-slope graphs, profiles, and DEMs to reveal erosional surfaces.<br>
During the first field trip we already measured palaeoflow directions, performed pebble counting and sampled the fluvial terraces in order to apply cosmogenic nuclide dating (<sup>10</sup>Be, <sup>26</sup>Al) as well as provenance analyses.<br>
Our preliminary analysis of the Coastal Cordillera indicates a clear segmentation between the northern and southern parts of the Nahuelbuta Range. The Lanalhue Fault, a NW-SE striking fault zone oblique to the plate boundary, defines the segment boundary. Furthermore, we find a complex drainage re-organisation including a drainage reversal and wind gap on the divide between the Tirúa and Pellahuén basins east of the town Tirúa. The coastal basins lost most of their Andean sediment supply areas that existed in Tertiary and in part during early Pleistocene time. Between the Bío-Bío and Imperial rivers no Andean river is recently capable to traverse the Coastal Cordillera, suggesting ongoing Quaternary uplift of the entire range.<br>
From the spatial distribution of geomorphic surfaces in this region two uplift signals may be derived: (1) a long-term differential uplift process, active since the Miocene and possibly caused by underplating of subducted trench sediments, (2) a younger, local uplift affecting only the northern part of the Nahuelbuta Range that may be caused by the interaction of the forearc with the subduction of the Mocha Fracture Zone at the latitude of the Arauco peninsula.
Our approach thus provides results in our attempt to decipher the characteristics of forearc development of active convergent margins using long-term geomorphic indicators. Furthermore, it is expected that our ongoing assessment will constrain repeatedly active zones of deformation.

Diese Informationen dienen unmittelbar (Echtzeitansatz) oder mittelbar (Kartenansatz) zur Dosierung von Dünge- und Pflanzenschutzmitteln (Präzise Landbewirtschaftung). Zur Datensammlung werden vorrangig fahrzeuggestützte Sensoren und VIS- und NIR-Luftbilder, aufgenommen aus Sportflugzeugen, verwendet.<br><br>
Erste Betriebe erwerben von Dienstleistungsunternehmen aufbereitete Satelliten-Fernerkundungsdaten. Die landwirtschaftliche und agrartechnische Forschung ist bestrebt, die grundlegenden Muster (z.B. des Ertragspotentials)
zu erkennen und damit den Aufwand der Betriebe für eine regelmäßige Informationserfassung gering zu halten.

Mit der politischen Wende in den Staaten des ehemaligen Ostblockes wurde für viele militärisch genutzte Flächen ein tiefgreifender Nutzungswandel eingeleitet. Truppenübungsplätze als stark gestörte Bestandteile unserer Kulturlandschaft weisen auf großen Flächen naturschutzfachlich wertvolle Habitatmosaike mit speziellen Lebensgemeinschaften auf. Der Nutzungswandel ist mit einer Veränderung der Vegetationsstrukturen (Sukzession) und weiteren landschaftsökologischen Prozessen verbunden.
<br><br>
Der ehemalige Truppenübungsplatz Döberitz im Norden der Landeshauptstadt Potsdam kann auf eine lange militärische Nutzungsgeschichte verweisen (erste
Manöver des Soldatenkönigs im Jahr 1713). Nach 1992 wurden das NSG Döberitzer Heide (3.415 ha) und das NSG Ferbitzer Bruch (1.155 ha) ausgewiesen.
Als Schutzgebiete nach der Vogelschutzrichtlinie sind sie Bestandteile des kohärenten Schutzgebietssystems Natura 2000 der europäischen Gemeinschaft.
Trotz des Schutzstatus und der militärischen Altlasten unterliegt das Gebiet als größte zusammenhängende Naturfläche im engeren Verflechtungsraum des Landes
Brandenburg einem hohen Nutzungsdruck.

Decisions for the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable management of natural resources are typically related to large scales, i.e. the landscape level. However, understanding and predicting the effects of land use and climate change on scales relevant for decision-making requires to include both, large scale vegetation dynamics and small scale processes, such as soil-plant interactions. Integrating the results of multiple BIOTA subprojects enabled us to include necessary data of soil science, botany, socio-economics and remote sensing into a high resolution, process-based and spatially-explicit model. Using an example from a sustainably-used research farm and a communally used
and degraded farming area in semiarid southern Namibia we show the power of simulation models as a tool to integrate processes across disciplines and scales.

In semi-arid savannas, unsustainable land use can lead to degradation of entire landscapes, e.g. in the form of shrub encroachment. This leads to habitat loss and is assumed to reduce species diversity. In BIOTA phase 1, we investigated the effects of land use on population dynamics on farm scale. In phase 2 we scale up to consider the whole regional landscape consisting of a diverse mosaic of farms with different historic and present land use intensities. This mosaic
creates a heterogeneous, dynamic pattern of structural diversity at a large spatial scale. Understanding how the region-wide dynamic land use pattern affects the abundance of animal and plant species requires the integration of processes on large as well as on small spatial scales. In our multidisciplinary
approach, we integrate information from remote sensing, genetic and ecological field studies as well as small scale process models in a dynamic region-wide simulation tool.

Published Article<br>The aim of the study on which this article is based was to reflect on the learning experiences of students during integrated management of childhood illness (IMCI) training in an undergraduate programme. IMCI is a set of guidelines that was established by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for cost-effective quality care for children younger than five to prevent diseases and death (WHO, 2004). Skilled primary healthcare workers are required to provide quality care at first contact with these children. The IMCI package was presented as an integral part of the second-year module that focuses on primary healthcare. In order to improve the quality of health services and refocus the health system on primary health-care (South Africa Department of Health, 2010), students have to demonstrate that they have achieved competence. According to Killen (2000:188), competence is a holistic term and focuses on knowledge, skills and values instead of competencies, which refer to specific capabilities. Primary health-care workers who act competently will integrate foundational IMCI knowledge with skills and values as well as with the ability to verify their decisions (Killen, 2000:188). Aqualitative, exploratory and descriptive research design was used to investigate the IMCI learning experiences. Such experiences are one of the indications whether training has been successful and how it can be improved (Suski, 2004:222). Data was collected by means of nominal-group technique (NGT) interviews with second-year nursing students of the training school who complied with the criteria for inclusion. NGT interviews were used effectively to evaluate clinical interaction, education and training.The findings reflected the different emotions experienced during teaching and learning as having been positive, negative or neutral. The consideration of negative emotions will assist with the improvement of IMCI teaching and learning, but all these findings can be useful for other higher-education institutions that present or plan to present IMCI training.
