Traditionally, the definition of “family” has broadened to create the “extended family” or “expanded family” with members defined by deep bonds, relationships, and friendships. Currently, close friends who become the extended/expanded family, can be as central as kin to family structure and stability. During the first decade of the twenty-first century, UK policy and practice has become increasingly overt in its concern with families. In January 2010, the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF, 2010) launched the Support for All: The Families and Relationships Green Paper. In its Foreword, Ed Balls, the then Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, presented ‘Strong, stable families’ as ‘the bedrock of our society’, positioning the Green Paper as ‘supporting families to help themselves’, whilst ‘ensuring that all public services play their part in supporting stron

Suicide can emotionally affect up to 60 people, who knew a suicider. Suicide survivors are stressed and are at risk of affective disorders. The article analyzes factors that are affecting the level of distress. The article considers the studies demonstrating the effects of stigmatization and self-stigmatization on distress level, and characteristics of the family system affecting distress. Understanding the mechanisms of increasing stress after suicide and suicidal attempts for relatives of a suicide helps identify targets for an effective post-event.

Need-adapted treatment of schizophrenia is an integrative treatment model developed in the Turku Schizophrenia Project. It is based on the interactional viewpoint and understanding on the interactional level. Experience of family and network therapy has shown that immediate interactions-oriented intervention is an essential starting-point for the treatment. It creates the possibility for the treatment as a whole to become a therapeutic process. For clinical purposes, it has seemed logical to divide the patients into three groups; the methods and focus of the family-oriented work differ somewha

Abstract Death of a significant other is consistently found to have a detrimental effect on cardiovascular functioning, and such relationship may be stronger when loss is accompanied by low-quality sleep. Using data from the Biomarker project of Midlife in the United States study (n=1,310), we examined whether quality-of-sleep has an additive effect on the relationship between loss and heart rate variability (HRV). Loss was measured as losing someone close within a year of data collection, and was categorized based on the respondents’ relationship with the deceased. Relationship was categorize

Abstract:
This study examines the effect of inter-role conflict between the family and business domains among operators of small businesses and family-owned businesses. Findings indicate that work-family conflict can significantly affect both job and life satisfaction of owners as well as their propensity to seek a new line of work. Results vary among owners depending on whether or not they work with other members of their immediate family. Owners that employ other family members experience significantly higher levels of work-family conflict.
