The research then scrutinizes the correlation between these elements and the physical characteristics of Montreal's housing patterns, and privacy concepts which are embodied in their designs. Both internal home layouts and functions, and outdoor settings are analyzed in relation to community privacy conceptions. This investigation process intends to diagnose major privacy deficiencies in the design of their homes and to highlight domestic privacy mechanisms and utilization modes of the home environment. Finally, criteria are established for improving the design of community detached homes and townhouses, with minimal change to their physical structure and patterns.

Full textIn the preparation of this thesis, an appreciation of the obstacles faced by Chinese immigrant women was gained by reviewing the relevant literature and government documents. The concerns of Chinese-Canadian women were placed in context by reviewing the history of women's status in China and their gradual influx into Canada. Participant observation of groups and case studies of individual women revealed that immigrant Chinese women are a heterogeneous group in terms of their backgrounds but homogeneous in terms of their tenacity and their aspirations and hopes for the future. The present study is the first attempt at recognizing Chinese immigrant women in Montreal. The conclusion was reached that through education, hard work and persistence in learning the official languages of Canada, they can triumph in face of societal barriers.

Full textThe results of my study suggest that the voices of these men and women were linked to the issues of "agency", "critical thinking", and "belonging". The participants talked about their lives as "immigrants" and members of a marginalized minority group. While some openly talked about the existence of "covert" or "hidden" racism in Canadian society, they all expressed contentment with their lives in Canada when compared to Iran. They articulated their awareness of the conflicting concepts of gender roles existent in the traditional Iranian culture and the culture of the host country, and viewed western values of women's education and career development as a positive factor in pursuing their academic aspirations.
Highlighting the significance of individual narratives and lived experiences of first-generation immigrant students, this study may contribute to broadening our understanding of issues faced by immigrant students in institutions of higher education. Furthermore, the insights from the lives of these men and women may have important implications for educators, administrators, and faculty staff in order to create more accepting and culturally sensitive campuses.

Full textAs the number of Iranian immigrants has increased in Canada in recent decades, more research is necessary on this population. Given that immigrant-language transmission is one component of immigrant settlement process and also, Iranian immigrants have rarely been the subject of Canadian studies, thus, the purpose of this research is to study the home language profile of Iranian immigrants in Montreal compared to Toronto. Using the data of long form census questionnaire 2001, 2006 and 2011, we have studied the influence of socio-demographic, familial and migratory factors on language Iranian immigrants spoke most often at home in Montreal and Toronto. In doing so, we have carried out various descriptive analyzes to discover if Iranian immigrants are more likely to speak in nonofficial language (heritage language) at home or in official languages. For the purpose of further investigation of home language profile of Iranian immigrants I expand my research by running logistic regressions. The results show that Iranian female immigrants compared to their male counterparts, legally married immigrants, those Iranians who have immigrated to Canada at the age of 15 years old and over as well as Iranian immigrants who have arrived in Canada after 1980 spoke in non-official language at home more than official languages in both Montreal and Toronto.

Full textThis enquiry explores the cultural, representations of adult immigrants from different cultural backgrounds learning French in Montreal in various post-secondary institutions sanctioned by the ministere de l'Immigration et des Communautes culturelles du Quebec (MICC). This study uses quantitative and qualitative survey instruments in order to examine the cultural representations of these immigrants in relation to their integration, their linguistic, cultural and social practices, a new definition of their cultural identity, their reactions in instances of intercultural contact as well as their motivation to study French. In total, 110 immigrants answered our written questionnaire and 14 of them participated in an interview.
Findings suggest that the participants generally hold positive cultural representations towards the French language and French-speaking Quebecois. The study indicates that immigrants are mostly looking for informal French learning experiences within their host society. Moreover, participants acknowledge that learning and mastering French is very important for them, both to interact with French-speaking Quebecois, and to obtain a good job in Quebec. Findings related to the immigrants' cultural identity reveal that they seem to experience a "me-them" cultural duality in their host province.
The implications of this study are mainly related to the importance of emphasizing the informal learning of the French language so that immigrants can become better integrated into the French-speaking society. Further study perspectives could include the development of French language programs and the content of the French courses offered by the MICC, the use of different data collection methods as well as the participation of immigrants from specific cultural origins.

Full textThe global migratory movement brings with several challenges, including integration in the host country. Some people speculate that religious communities, such as churches, mosques, synagogues and temples are not necessarily places that would favour the integration of newcomers into the host country. This project seeks to demonstrate that certain religious communities are places that promote no need for this word integration. The case study we carried out in an evangelical church in Montreal demonstrates a model of no need for this integration and could serve as an example. The space granted to participation in Church activities and a desire on the part of newcomers favour the integration of newcomers. We see that the mission of this congregation offers multiple opportunities for newcomers to integrate so as to not experience discrimination and rejection. We have identified St Paul’s the Epistle to the Romans, offers as much to the Church as it does to the newcomers who choose this congregation for their integration and life together.

Full textIn recent decades, theses related to neoliberalism, changes in technology and the exponential growth of knowledge have not only affected the labour market but also the organization of social services. These developments have had effects both for those who experience a form of marginalization (women, new immigrants, youth, etc.) and the stakeholders who support them. Empowerment is one of the alternatives mentioned regularly to help support the initiatives of individuals and communities but knowledge on the conditions of its implementation is still lacking, especially as this process takes different forms depending on the context. This exploratory qualitative research, based on the case study of community organizations in Montreal, Brussels and Grenoble, focused on practices aimed at supporting the social and professional integration of immigrant women used by workers in community organizations and the benefits identified by the immigrant women concerned. How do community organization workers support the empowerment of immigrant women? Which components of the practices used with immigrant women in these community organizations appear to be conducive to their empowerment? What knowledge is mobilized by the workers? What are the benefits of these practices, as identified by the immigrant women themselves? These questions directed our examination of these practices and the knowledge mobilized by them, from the perspective of both the workers in these community organizations and the immigrant women supported by them. A total of 13 workers took part in one or two semi-structured interviews and 27 immigrant women participated in group interviews in each of the community organizations studied. The results identified four foundations on which the practices of community organization workers are based and reports on the choices made by these workers in their practices, situated on four continuums. Finally, the benefits identified by immigrant women have impacts at different levels, recalling that these practices simultaneously contribute to supporting the development of empowerment of both individuals and communities.

In this thesis, we examine perseverance and dropout factors related to recently immigrated Haitians in the province of Québec and New York State. A review of the literature reveals a lack of documentation on this issue. A conceptual framework was thus devised to better address these factors and to analyse and synthesise several theoretical approaches such as those regarding immigrants and educational attainment (Rong and Brown, 2001; Warikoo and Carter, 2009; Xie and Greenman, 2011), forms of social capital (Bourdieu, 1979a, 1979b, 1980), social groups and roles (Merton, 1965), and the school-effect/teacher-effect (Crahay, 2000; Bressoux, 1994a). Also exposed are two comprehensive approaches, namely, interactionism (Weber, 1959; Boudon, 1979, 1994; Goffman, 1998; Garfinkel, 1967) and the ESCOL group’s theory on the relationship with knowledge (Rochex, 2002; Charlot, 2003), with the goal of bringing to light the relative nature of the conclusions of qualitative research focused on participant subjectivity in the analysis of social activity. For this study, eleven people (seven men and four women) from Montréal and Brooklyn were interviewed. Each participant had experienced school dropout at either the secondary school or adult education level. The semi-structured interview was chosen as the data collection method and data analysis was performed thematically. Data analysis made it possible to categorise the resulting data under five headings: economic capital, cultural capital, social capital, institutional supervision, and specific factors. These five groups contain the perseverance and dropout factors expressed by the participants in this study. The results of this study shed significant light on the issues relative to the dropout dynamics of first-generation young and young adult Haitian immigrants in the province of Québec and the State of New York at both the secondary school and adult education levels. Our findings were compared with those of the reviewed literature on the subject as well as within the conceptual framework of this thesis. The synthesised results thus lead us to propose an analysis model which can be referred to as an « academic revival of newly immigrated Haitian students in the province of Québec and the New York State ». The analysis and synthesis of the factors emerging from this thesis, and more specifically the six themes describing the specific factors (demography, personal motivation, basic challenges, affective aspects, personality traits, and behavioural issues) enabled us to develop another concept which may represent a significant contribution to the perseverance in school of Haitian new arrivals: psycho-integrational supervision, a form of mentoring provided for these young and young adult students to better guide their socioeducational development and academic perseverance in their new home. Psycho-integrational supervision will consist of identifying certain psychological factors affecting young and young adult Haitian students prior to their arrival in relation to the social elements affecting their lives in their adopted country. This personalised assistance will be made possible with the support and involvement of the State, social integration instances, and schools. The principal instigators, notably psychologists, social workers, and social anthropologists will thus seek to better understand and guide new arrivals in terms of behaviours to adopt to nurture effective socio-cultural, professional, and economical growth.

Full textThis research studies youth from Haitian background who are somewhat attached to the church of their parents. It seeks to examine the extent of this attachment, firstly, according to pertinent scientific approaches, particularly sociological and psychological and secondly, through the youths’ own perception. From the perspective of pastoral care of migrants, the research also looks at the role of the congregation and the family in this attachment. Theological reflection examines the moral and pastoral support of the apostle Paul towards his young disciple Timothy, who was being criticized by elders in his church community. The situation of Timothy and of the youth in our study will be shown to be correlated. In both, youth is seen to imply immaturity. Likewise, the generation of biblical Ezra is analyzed; there the conservation of religious purity in the nation of Israel is compared to certain immigrant Haitian leaders and youth. This research shows that Haitian youth are attached to their parents’ congregation primarily for sociocultural reasons but also because of their personal faith in God. The mentality of the older generation is found to be crucial and can make this attachment more fragile.

Full textIn research and government institutions, socio-professional integration is well known as one of the main integration catalysts for immigrants. Likewise, Quebec government chooses most of its immigrants depending on their socio-professional integration potential on Quebec’s job market. This potential is measured, among others, according to the level of education. Yet, numerous immigrants enter Quebec with very few years of study. While many scholars investigate highly qualified immigrant’s integration processes, little is known about low qualified immigrant’s integration processes. This qualitative study specifically aims to explore the professional integration experience of low qualified immigrants by using the transition theory’s concepts. The data was collected during interviews with seven low qualified immigrants engaged in a socio-professional integration program. It allowed a better understanding of the motivations driving these people to enter the labour market with support from a socio-professional integration program, to identify personal and environmental attributes favorizing this process and to explore adaptations enabling its orderly conduct

The integration of foreign trained nurses into the health system helps to maintain a sufficient workforce and facilitate accessibility to health care for people of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds (Pearson et al., 2007; RNAO, 2007). Based on the Transition Theory of Meleis (2010), our qualitative study inspired by a phenomenology approach aimed at understanding the experience of professional transition as lived by foreign trained nurses in Quebec City. The data, collected for 6 participants was via semi-structured interview, has been analysed with theme identification (Pierre Paillé & Mucchielli, 2012). Three major themes around the experience of internationally educated nurses were found: living different transitions at the same time, experimenting a different practice and realising the contrast between one’s expectations and the reality. Then, conditions influencing transition emerged from the data: using inner resources and strengths to adapt, the influence of the work environment and being different. Finally, two last themes emerged for the analysis concerning the evaluation of the integration made by the nurse herself and an feeling of accomplishment. In accordance with our results and the literature, we conclude this study suggesting different

Full textImmigration and cultural diversity are, more than ever, a central issue in current sociopolitical debates in Quebec, with identity and integration being the two major emergent themes. While immigrants want to maintain their cultural heritage, Quebecois fear losing theirs in the increasing diversity. This qualitative study centers on an especially discriminated and targeted group: Muslim women. In it, we explore how these women define their identity and how they feel about their integration in society. Using symbolic interactionism and life course perspectives, we seek to understand how these two processes, identity and integration, interact. The data collected during thirteen semi-directed interviews with Muslim-identified women explore the cultural, religious, professional, familial and feminine dimension of their identity. These were then put in relation to the facilitators and the obstacles of the feelingexperience of integration. Whereas the social-political context tends to confine Muslim people’s identity solely to its religious dimension, this study wants to show that immigration is so much more diverse, complex and dynamic than we usually assume. Full textThe province of Quebec receives the second largest number of immigrants each year within Canada. It seems that emigrating from an under developed country to a developed country increases women's feelings of self-sufficiency and will lead to a positive attitude toward gender equality. The main focus of this study was to evaluate if immigrating to Quebec has had an influence on women’s perceptions of gender equality. In order to achieve this goal, semi-structured interviews have been conducted with eleven immigrant women from eight different countries, now living in Quebec. Questions on their perceptions toward gender, self-sufficiency and gender equality were asked. Constructivist paradigm has oriented the methodology and the data analysis was based on postmodernism feminist theory. Results suggest that gender equality is influenced by the immigration to Quebec and some of the factors of influence were pointed out by the participants. Orientations for further research are shown in the conclusion.

In recent years, Québec City has welcomed an increasing number of immigrants as well as a significant number of non-permanent residents, including more and more international students. This has given way to an even more diverse urban fabric. Half of the newcomers are women who, while experiencing most of the challenges shared by all immigrants, often face greater barriers due to a dual woman/immigrant status. On the other hand, immigrant women also have a capacity to act upon their lives and implement strategies to cope with their difficulties, including getting socially involved in the host society. This exploratory research focuses on one of these strategies – volunteering – through interviews with immigrant women who have volunteered in the early years of their lives in Quebec. The main objective of the research is to understand the role of volunteering with regard to the integration process. Some observations came out of our results. For the majority of participants, volunteering came in line with previous commitments while circumstances specific to post-migration could lead to changes in the types of volunteering they chose, the way they committed themselves and the motivations behind their choices. Interviewees have got involved according to their principles and values as well as their personal interests, but their immigrant status also carried additional motivations including the wish to create social

Full textIn Quebec City, there is a low attendance of African immigrant women in the services for victims of sexual violence. To understand this phenomenon, we developed this mixed study with a constructivist perspective on social representations of sexual violence and the available assistance. Its aims were to find out how African immigrant women in Quebec City represent sexual violence and the available assistance. To answer these questions, we used three data collection instruments: the sociodemographic questionnaire, the semi-directive interview guide, and the free association technique. A total of eleven immigrant women aged between 18 and 30 years participated in this study. They came from eight francophone countries in Africa and lived in Quebec for less than ten years. The results showed that rape was the main form of sexual violence for the participants. In addition to this, they enumerated other forms of violence more specific to their environment, such as female genital cutting and forced marriage. They mainly explained this violence by social factors. Thus, according to them, in African society, the victims are more blamed than the perpetrator, whether he is known or not. In addition to that, they considered as obstacles to their denunciation: the fear of breaking up the family, if the perpetrator is a close member or the husband, as well as the trivialization of certain forms of sexual violence. Regarding their perception of the psychological assistance, participants believed that it is reserved for «white» or «crazy people» and not very useful in African society. The assistance from the judicial system is presented as ineffective due to stereotypes about victims and subjectivity in the work of the police officers. We discussed all the study results with both our literature review and analysis framework. We also suggested recommendations for both research and social work intervention.

Full textI begin with an overview of past attempts to understand the changing role of the service sector in developed economies. Despite their weaknesses new political economy frameworks are shown to perhaps provide the best starting point for the development of a more 'services informed' approach to understanding current economic change.
In an attempt to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of applying such approaches to the study of services I first review their ability to explain and predict changes currently taking place in the tourism industry as a whole. This is followed by a discussion of the empirical findings of the thesis based on 103 interviews with managers and owners of Montreal hotels and travel agencies. I focus on the following key areas: the evolving competitive environment, changes in corporate organization, the adoption of new technologies and shifts in labour use. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Full textIn a context of globalization where flows are multiple, vodou, considered here as a system of care, has moved outside Haiti and is mobilized in therapeutic routes in the diasporas. This master thesis focuses on how vodou presents itself and fits into episodes of illness lived by Haitians in Montreal. To meet our objectives, which were to analyze the place of vodou in the care process and to analyze the answers given by the vodou to the health problems of the Haitians who consult it, we conducted an exploratory qualitative research that builds on an anthropological approach. Our research field took place in the Montreal Haitian community in the winter of 2015. To understand the subject from an emic point of view, we conducted semi-directed individual interviews with eleven participants (three people including vodou in their therapeutic journey, two vodou practitioners and four key informants). Observation was also part of our investigation techniques. Our results reveal that vodou alongside several care resources (shamanism, maraboutage, Freemason, Catholic and Protestant churches, biomedicine) in a healing research. It manifests itself in various visual forms in both collective and private spaces. It turns out to be a choice in heterogeneous contexts from which it is difficult to draw generalizations; the motives of solicitation of vodou, the time, the duration of attendance of a vodou practitioner and the frequency are variable. The mobilization of vodou in a disease episode is based on an explanatory model of the disease that refers to a distinct worldview. The logic of aggression (bad spells) dominated the co-constructed interpretation of the sufferings witnessed in our study. The discursive and practical responses shared in this research highlight the caring, preventive and therapeutic nature of vodou.

This research aims to understand how percieved needs among immigrant families by social workers from two regions of Quebec province influence their social intervention with them. Ten semi-directed interviews were realized with social workers. In a socio-constructivist epistemology, the systemic-intercultural model as well as the percieved needs and social intervention concepts guided the research. Results show that characteristics of the immigrants, types of needs percieved among them, but also characteristics of the participants on their own and of their mandate influence their perception of immigrants’ needs and social intervention with them. The formation requests from the participants in regard to their work with immigrant families showed to be linked to the challenges they faced when working with such clients. Results lead to propose relfexion and action avenues to the attention of research, practice and social planning settings. KEY WORDS : Immigration, families, rural, Chaudière-Appalaches, CLSC, Quebec, percieved needs, social intervention.
