Marwan, Nur Fakhzan. "Macroeconomic impacts of immigration in Malaysia : trade, remittances and unemployment." Thesis, Durham University, 2011. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/1411/.

Full text
Abstract:
The macroeconomic consequence of immigration is a disputable area among many interested parties as evidenced by the empirical studies. Most studies, however, employ Anglo-Saxon countries as their subjects, while there is an increasing demand for studies on the economic consequences of immigration in developing countries. As a developing country, Malaysia has attracted immigration over the years, and the population of migrant labour in Malaysia has reached more than two million in 2008, which makes up 7% of the total population and 20% of total labour force. Thus, such large presence has provided a rationale for an economic analysis on the impact of immigrations on the Malaysian economy. This research, hence, aims to analyze the economic impact of immigration in Malaysia in the context of trade, remittance and unemployment in an interrelated manner. These topics are examined in detail in three separate empirical essays. Specifically, the first essay examines the link between bilateral trade and immigration, while the second essay explores the relationship between remittances of the Indonesian workers in Malaysia and the macroeconomic variables both in Malaysia and Indonesia. The last empirical essay analyses the relationship between unemployment and immigration in Malaysia. These empirical essays use quantitative research methodology in the form of panel and time series data analysis. However, each essay is based on a different theoretical framework, econometric methods, timelines and samples due to availability data and the nature of the study. The findings of the first essay indicates that immigration increases both exports and imports through both preference and immigration-link mechanisms, implying that immigrants play a vital role in fostering trade between Malaysia and countries of origin. In the second essay, it is found that Indonesian labour in Malaysia take macroeconomic conditions in both countries into account in their remittance decisions and the findings demonstrate that the main motives to remit is altruism and portfolio investment, indicating the importance of the level of economic activities in both countries. The third essay reveals that there is a lack of evidence supporting the hypothesis of adverse employment effect of immigration in Malaysia, implying that the job-creation effect of immigration has taken place, which has resulted in further economic and employment growth in both public and private sectors. In conclusion, immigration is vital for both host and home countries’ economic developments as the findings of this research have demonstrated, thus refuting the claims that their presence brings more harms than benefits.

Wu, Yinghong. "Economic impacts of different skilled levels of immigration labour : a CGE assessment for the UK." Thesis, Middlesex University, 2011. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/12380/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to make a comprehensive assessment of economic impacts of different skilled level of international immigration labour on the UK by using a multiregion, multi-sector CGE-ILA model as a tool, with four main extensions from the IFPRI standard CGE framework, namely, the four-level nested CES production functions, highly disaggregated household data, two foreign regions and the assumption of imperfect labour market. The model is calibrated to a purpose-built 41x41 SAM dataset for the UK 2004. By employing four sets of criterions, the analysis combines four skill-type of immigration labour to look at their impacts on the UK economy from six aspects: economic growth, international trade, wage and unemployment, incomes of institutions, employment in sectors, production prices and scale of production. The main findings are: 1) The inflow of higher-skilled labour can make significant contribution to UK economy and alleviate wage inequality; although lower-skilled immigration labour also has the positive effects on UK economy, they can worsen the wage inequality. 2) Only increase of small proportion (<8%) of highly-skilled immigration labour will reduce total unemployment. 3) Increase of immigration labour has positive effects on the incomes of all institutions, of which enterprises and government gain the larger benefit than households do. The higher the skill of immigration labour has, the larger the contribution they will make. 4) The unskilled immigration labour has the larger positive effects on UK economy than the semi-skilled has, and has the positive impacts on reducing the activity prices of the some sectors in the Primary and Secondary Industry, and then encourages more exports than imports. 5) The semi-skilled immigration labour is the least needed in the UK labour market, if the reduction of unemployment is the prior consideration. Thus, the policy implication of the current study is that the highly-skilled immigration labour is urgently and largely needed by the UK economy; the recommended scale of immigration labour is a mix with a large proportion of higher-skilled labour force and a small proportion of the lower-skilled.

Abstract:
The United States is in the midst of demographic transformation that will continue to diversify the cultural, ethnic, racial, and linguistic landscape of the country. Within the last decade, millions of immigrant families have emigrated to the U.S. to escape tremendous hardships in their native countries. These families are guided by the hope of creating a stable, safe, and comfortable environment for their children. Unfortunately, the pathway to citizenship and authorized entry into the U.S. is convoluted (Kremer, Moccio,& Hammell, 2009) and families are frequently assigned wait times that can last several years (U.S. Department of State, 2013). These very long wait times are an unfortunate reality for several families, which is one of the many reasons some families enter the U.S. without authorization. Upon arrival into the U.S., many immigrant families experience anti-immigrant attitudes, prejudicial law enforcement practices, and feel socially isolated. The U.S. born children of these immigrant families are at risk for being separated from their parents who lack authorized resident status. In this regard, over 100,000 parents of U.S. citizen children were deported between 1998 and 2007 (U.S. Department of Homeland Security, 2012). However, little is known about how these children cope with the loss of their parents. To date, no research has been conducted that measures the psychosocial impact of parental absence because of aggressive immigration enforcement. Thus, a patent need exists for research on the psychosocial implications of parental absence in a child's life because of deportation. This study addressed the psychosocial impact of parental loss because of aggressive immigration enforcement. All participants of this study completed a demographic questionnaire and two technically adequate standardized psychosocial assessments that measured emotional symptoms. A two-group independent samples design was employed that included a sample of youth who were homeless because their parents were impacted by immigration and customs enforcement and a sample of youth who were homeless for other reasons. The present study sought to answer the following questions: Are there significant differences in emotional symptoms between youth who are living on their own as a result of immigration enforcement in comparison to those youth who are living on their own for other reasons? Are there significant differences in emotional symptoms between U.S. citizen and non-U.S. citizen youth? Do significant differences exist in perceptions of school climate between youth who are living on their own as a result of immigration enforcement in comparison to those youth who are living on their own for other reasons? Is the quality of relationships with parents significantly different between youth who are living on their own as a result of immigration enforcement in comparison to those youth who are living on their own for other reasons? Do significant differences exist in emotional symptoms between youth whose parents have been impacted by immigration and customs enforcement (ICE; Impacted by ICE group) in comparison to youth whose parents have been impacted by immigration enforcement for other reasons (Homeless for Other Reasons group)? Lastly, are there significant differences in perception of school climate between U.S. citizen and non-U.S. citizen youth? Results of this study did not reveal significant differences in emotional symptoms between the Impacted by ICE group and the Homeless for Other Reasons group. However, in terms of how they perceived their relationships with their parents, the Impacted by Immigration group reported more positive relations with their parents. There were significant differences regarding perceptions of school climate between the Impacted by ICE and Homeless for Other Reasons groups. Intra-group analyses within the Impacted by Immigration group indicated significant differences in perceptions of school climate among authorized U.S. citizens and unauthorized non-U.S. citizens. Unauthorized non-U.S. citizens tended to perceive school climate more favorably than U.S. citizens.

Abstract:

Bhatia, Monish. "Resisting 'bare-life'? : impacts of policies and procedures on asylum seekers and 'illegal' migrants." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2014. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/23295/.

Abstract:
The aim of this research is to examine the impact of UKs immigration policies and procedures on asylum seekers and ‘illegal’ migrants. The study investigates the ways in which ‘risks’ have been proffered as a justification to contain and control this group of individuals. Those claiming asylum are increasingly subjected to a complex set of rules and legislation, and their access to the welfare state and labour market is severely restricted, if not completely denied. Individuals are increasingly pushed into a bureaucratic limbo in which they are rendered destitute and stateless. This Thesis draws upon asylum seekers’ and ‘illegal’ migrants’ experiences of living in this empty space and shows the ways in which they have used their agency to ‘resist’ and overcome the controls that render them as ‘bare-life’. The study employs a qualitative methodology which includes in-depth interviews with twenty two asylum seekers and six specialist practitioners. The conclusion reveals a constant struggle against the status quo and dissent against abusive state power.

Reckers, Grace. "(In)Secure Communities: Assessing the Impacts of Secure Communities on Immigrant Participation in Los Angeles Health Clinics." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2018. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/1198.

Full text
Abstract:
The United States Department of Homeland Security launched Secure Communities in 2009, expanding Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) jurisdiction and establishing partnerships between federal immigration officers and municipal law enforcement agencies (LEAs) across the country. The effects of Secure Communities have been numerous. While rates of deportations had been rising annually for decades, the program granted ICE with even more power to detain and deport undocumented immigrants and dramatically increased federal collaboration with LEAs. Secure Communities was terminated by then Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson in 2014; replaced by the comparable, but lesser known, Priority Enforcement Program (PEP); and reinstated in January of 2017 immediately following the inauguration of Donald Trump. This thesis focuses on the greater implications Secure Communities has on immigrant sense of safety and more generally on public health. As anti-immigrant rhetoric and fear of deportations are on the rise, there have been noticeable disengagements of immigrant populations from public services. I investigate the impacts of Trump’s anti-immigrant platform in 2016 and reinstatement of Secure Communities in 2017 on how immigrant communities in South Central Los Angeles make use of health clinics.

Nolan, Mark Robert. "Aspects of the New Commonwealth immigration question and its impacts : a study in policy making and elite politics, 1968-1981." Thesis, University of Hull, 2013. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:10082.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis offers an analysis of policy making on aspects of the New Commonwealth immigration issue in Britain between 1968 and 1981. It concerns three formally distinct but profoundly interlocking issues: immigration control itself, the development of race relations policy and the pursuit of nationality law reform. I argue that a populist critique of prevailing bipartisanship on the subject grew up around the notion that immigration policy, and the notion of multiracial Britain itself, was subject to a profound shortfall in political legitimacy. These arguments were introduced by Enoch Powell in 1968, but remained too controversially wedded to race issues to achieve purchase in the mainstream. A limited form of bipartisanship therefore survived this early assault, to be rephrased by Edward Heath as a managerial compromise that sought to accept stronger immigration controls (and, significantly, the reform of nationality law), justifiable in the national interest, and to remove the issues from the political sphere through strong administration and wide governmental discretion. This compromise was subsequently weakened by threats to the governing competence that underlay it in the form of problems in the control system highlighted by officials (some of which became public knowledge), the possibility of a deterioration in race relations and an increase in immigration perceived to originate in policy defects and a more liberal management of entry by the Labour government. These perceived failures permitted a restatement of the political legitimacy critique by individuals within the Conservative Party. In seeking to repudiate ideas of 'consensus' more broadly, the party under Margaret Thatcher's leadership reincorporated the populist idea that high minded and elitist bipartisanship was a failed form of governance, emphasising the redress of putatively valid public grievances through a strengthened system of immigration control, designed to cure systematic weaknesses in regulating what had become largely secondary (family) migration, and through the realisation of the 1981 British Nationality Act, intended to close off the period of post-colonial migration.

Abstract:
Since the second half of the nineteenth century, many Italians immigrated into the Var department, geographically very close to the Italian peninsula. Yet the Var area hasn’t attracted the same interest of its neighbors, the departments of Bouches-du-Rhône and Alpes-Maritimes, among historians. This observation led us to study the transalpine immigration into the Var. Mostly developed from first-hand sources that did a lot of researching in the French Local Historical Archives, this thesis characterizes the Italian presence in the Var, both from a demographic, socio economic and memorial point of view. In other words, it reveals the extent of the Italian exodus into the Var department, the profile of immigrants and their geographical distribution in the area. This work also shows the impact that the massive arrival of transalpine immigrants had on the Var economy and defines the sectors in which they were employed. Finally, it treats the cultural aspects with help from the memories of the Italian descendants settled in the Var who were able to tell the story of their ancestors. The study will also look into the emigrational path taken by the transalpine Var immigrants individually without going into all the usual clichés, concerning the uprooting, adaptation, discrimination, or lastly the transmission of Italian origins. This study has used a positive and constructive approach ; it has taken into account a lot of different sources which manages to tell the Italian immigration in the most realistic way

Abstract:
A considerable body of evidence links social and economic inequities to poor health. One of the means through which these inequities are translated to the body is via negative emotions, which carry known psychological and physiological responses. This thesis is a historically contextualized study of how migration from Mexico to southern Arizona is experienced at the site of the body. In this dissertation, I outline the ethno-historical background of traditional medicinal usage and concepts of health and healing in northern Mexico, the primary sending region to southern Arizona. This historical grounding enables a richer exploration of how Mexicans understand migration to effect their physical and mental health. I then examine migration-related psychosocial stressors impacting first-generation Mexican immigrants in southern Arizona, and report on the primary emotional experiences immigrants associate with these stressors. Finally, I use the illness narratives of my participants to move more deeply into the connections between these experiences of emotional suffering and physical health. Here I employ immigrants' own words to draw a link between group level epidemiological data on health declines in the immigrant community and established research in biological anthropology and neurobiology that identifies individual emotional hardship as a biological pathway to disease. Given the heavy emotional toll of migration and the direct impact that regional legislation and border security has had on well-being, this thesis argues that emotion be considered an important mechanism for health declines in the immigrant community.

Abstract:
The issue of immigration, in host economies, is today at the center of political, economic and social concerns. Immigration is perceived as a problem rather than an opportunity for host countries in general and France in particular. The results of the Transatlantic Trends survey between 2008 and 2013 show that in France, public opinion on immigration has deteriorated significantly. Do you perceive immigration as a problem rather than an opportunity? 50% of French respondents answered yes in 2013. This percentage was only 39% in 2008. At the same time, demographic projections show a population ageing and immigration could be a solution to this problem. The thesis aims to analyze, in this context of population ageing, the economic effects of immigration by focusing on its impact on public finances and consumption in France. It contributes to the literature on costs and benefits of immigration in the host countries. It helps to shed light on the economic consequences of a political decision on immigration, by testing the effects of changes in migration policies on public finances or the effects of rising income on the consumption of native and immigrant households in France. The thesis focuses on two main parts: the first focuses on the fiscal impact of immigration, with a first chapter on accounting evaluation and a second chapter on dynamic evaluation using a general equilibrium model. The second part of the thesis focuses on the consumption of immigrants in France. Again, there are two chapters: the first measures the contribution of immigrants to final demand and the second analyzes the consumption behavior of native and immigrant households in France

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the motivation behind individuals’ decision to migrate, the impact of migration on the host countries’ economies, and finally the impact of high skilled emigration on the human capital level in origin countries. Chapter 1 investigates whether ICT facilitates migration flows from origin to host countries based on the magnitude of the flows. Chapter 2 investigates the productivity effects of migration in four European Union (EU) countries: the UK, Spain and the Netherlands for 1995-2008 and Germany for 2002-2008. This analysis was carried out using EU Labour Force Survey (LFS) and EU-KLEMS data. We apply the Pooled Mean Group (PMG) variant for the autoregressive distributed-lag (ARDL) estimator. Various findings are presented in order to distinguish between EU and non-EU origins as well as the skill level of migrants. Chapter 3 contributes an insightful panel data analysis of human capital and high skilled emigration for 74 origin countries from 1980 to 2000 with a five-year frequency. We find a significant negative brain drain impact of high skilled emigration across countries sampled.

The diploma thesis deals with the issue of immigration and its impact on the economy in Australia, Great Britain and the United States of America. In the introduction, various migration theories explaining the migration motifs and immigration policies, whose specifics and the type of requirements of the monitored countries sheds the composition of incoming individuals, are discussed. This profile is complemented by the analysis itself, which examines the socio-economic factors of foreign-born population living in the monitored countries. This analysis is carried out by cross-sectional data comparisons, but it monitors the arrival times of individuals, providing an overview within the timeline. In order to determine the impact of immigration on employment and average wages, regression was used, but this effect was in no way proven beyond the impact on average wages in Australia.

Abstract:
Brazilian immigration phenomena in Portugal is not a recent one. Its onset was exclusively linked to high ranked people, but since 1990 it is characterized by a more third-world emigration, including a large number of persons associated with modest social origin. Using a qualitative methodology, with content analysis and semi-structured interviews, this work assesses Brazilian immigrants perceptions about actual Portuguese social reality, as well as the economic crisis impact on their decision to return to Brazil. Twenty Brazilian immigrants aged between 21 and 42 years old were interviewed. Results suggest that Brazilian immigrant’s perception about Portugal current situation is linked to unemployment, poor life conditions, among other factors. Despite that, most of the immigrants interviewed believe that Portugal is still a reasonable place to live in. Results also suggest that the majority of Brazilian immigrants want to return to Brazil. However they do not point a specific return date. Amongst the reasons to return we identify the perception of a better future for those who are graduated, the lack of labor, and poor socio-economic conditions in Portugal. Despite that, the majority agreed to be at least reasonably or well inserted in Portugal.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the determinants of the localisation of international students and international students. A comprehensive analysis focuses on the determinants of student migration to OECD countries. Using estimation methods present in the literature on international trade (Poisson regressions), it appears, in addition to traditional determinants of migration of workers, that the quality of education in the destination countries is a key determinant of student migrations. Furthermore, a network effect (diaspora effect), by qualification, has been demonstrated. An analysis of determinants applied to the French case confirms the results of the previous study and highlights a network effect by age and a strong sensitivity to the costs borne by students during their studies (rental prices…).This thesis also evaluates the macroeconomic impacts of student migration on the French economy through a computable general equilibrium model with overlapping generations. Educating international students represents a cost but this cost may be offset by an increase in the stock of human capital in the economy resulting in a larger growth rate of the GDP. However, the magnitude of gains depends on the size of the students flows and on the share of the students educated in France who will integrate the French labor market, once their studies are completed (retention rate). The students migrations also have an impact on the financing of French retirement system by modifying the inactive/active ratio

Abstract:
With the significant rise in immigration to the U.S. over the last few decades, fully understanding the economic impact of immigration is paramount for policy makers. As such, this dissertation consists of three empirical essays contributing to the literature on the impact of immigration. In my first essay, I re-examine the impact of immigration on housing rents and completely controlling for endogenous location choices of immigrants. I model rents as a function of both contemporaneous and initial economic and housing market conditions. I show that existing estimates of the impact of immigration on rents are biased and the source of the bias is the instrumental variable strategy common in much of the immigration literature. In my second essay, I present a new approach to estimating the effect of immigration on native wages. Noting the imperfect substitutability of immigrants and natives within education groups, I posit an empirical framework where labor markets are stratified by occupations. Using occupation-specific skill to define homogeneous skill groups, I estimate the partial equilibrium (within skill group) effect of immigration. The results suggest that when one defines labor market cohorts that directly compete in the labor market, the effect of immigration on native wages is roughly twice as large as previous estimates in the literature. In my third essay, I return to the housing market and examine the effects of immigration within metropolitan areas. Specifically, I investigate the relationship between immigrant inflows, native outflows, and rents. Taking advantage of the unique settlement patterns of immigrants, I show that the effect of immigration on rents is lower in both high-immigrant neighborhoods and portions of the rent distribution where immigrants cluster. Contrary to the existing belief in the literature, the results suggest that the preferences of natives, not immigrants, bid up rents in response to an immigrant inflow.

Abstract:
The flow of immigrants between Europe and many other countries is often brought up in the discussion of the labor market. It is also questioned whether an increased immigration is beneficial for the society and the economy of the receiving country. This paper is an investigation of the above-mentioned problem “does immigration benefit a country’s economy and what are the effects of immigration on the economy?”. Furthermore, we will especially look at how immigration benefits the natives in the country with respect to labor and capital income. We will also investigate if there is a difference in education and skills between immigrants and natives and we will also examine the consequences of this. The discussion about benefits and liabilities to the society that has arisen, due to the welfare effects in the economy, will also be brought up and analyzed. The thesis work will mostly be a study of theoretical findings, where we will discuss the previous researches and important models, for instance Borjas (1999), who uses a model that gives a solid result of how much natives benefit from immigration in term of labor and capital earnings. To support the theoretical part, we have gathered the data from Eurostat and Swedish migration Authority, which will help to find some empirical results as well. This paper also includes a regression model that measures the change in the unemployment rate where the independent variables are GDP growth rate and immigration inflow.

Abstract:
Australian immigration policy has traditionally been justified as a means to ensure national security and promote economic development. Neither of these rationales retains much contemporary force. A larger population is no longer regarded as critical to Australia's defensive capacity, and the quest for economic development, synonymous with aggregate growth, has been superseded by a concern about per capita growth performance. While humanitarian and cultural justifications for immigration have been advanced, they are either restricted in scope or contentious. Currently, the programme is operating on a large scale without a clear rationale. The purpose of this work is to investigate the economic consequences of immigration, and so consider whether the economic rationale may be recast in an alternative form. In this chapter, the existing literature is reviewed and a strategy for carrying the analysis further is outlined.

Abstract:
The difficult process of acculturation with which refugees are faced after displacement following war and gross human rights abuses is a significant problem at both the individual and societal level. As a result of the high incidence of prolonged and repeated pre-migration traumas and post-migration stressors, refugees are at an increased risk of developing a wide range of mental health problems. This thesis examines interventions for refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced persons that use innovative approaches to promote psychosocial wellbeing and aid acculturation. Part One is a literature review of the effectiveness of treatments for refugees, other than trauma-focused therapies, that target the broad range of mental health problems and difficulties with everyday functioning with which they present. Part Two is an empirical study of group music-making workshops run for immigration detainees in Immigration Removal Centres. The workshops aim to foster self-expression and autonomy in detainees and culminate in the production of original music that is either shared with other detainees through performances or recorded and shared with community groups. Applied ethnography was used to investigate whether the workshops had any short and/or long-term effect on participants’ psychological wellbeing, and the mechanism through which this effect was enabled. Finally, Part Three is a reflection on the research process and discusses the considerations and compromises made to conduct exploratory research in complex settings.

Zhang, Haimin. "Impact of immigration on Canada : crime, wage, and diversity." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/48500.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation studies the impact of immigration on Canada. The first chapter analyzes the heterogeneous impact of immigration on crime rates along the years-since-arrival dimension and finds two robust patterns. First, new immigrants do not have a significant impact on the property crime rate, but with time spent in Canada, a 10% increase in the recent-immigrant share or established-immigrant share decreases the property crime rate by 2% to 3%. Neither underreporting to police nor the dilution of the criminal pool by the addition of law-abiding immigrants can fully explain the size of the estimates, suggesting the existence of a spillover effect. Second, IV estimates are consistently more negative than their OLS counterparts. By not correctly identifying the causal channel, OLS estimation leads to the incorrect conclusion that immigration is associated with higher crime rates. The second chapter discusses the productivity value associated with the diversified workforce brought in by immigrants. Instead of treating immigrants as one homogeneous group conditional on their level of education and experience, this chapter focuses on the composition of immigrants and studies the impact of diversity (by source country) on the wages of native workers. Results show a strong positive impact of diversity among highly-educated immigrants on the wages of less-educated native-born workers. This chapter uses a novel approach to test for different channels of the spillover and finds evidence supporting the presence of a productivity spillover and a general-equilibrium demand spillover. The last chapter assesses the impact of new immigrants who arrived Canada within the past ten years on wages of native workers and more established immigrants. City level labour markets are stratified along occupation lines. Results show that new immigrants do not have an impact on the wages of native workers, but they decrease the wages of the immigrant workers who arrived more than a decade earlier. The negative impact is more prevalent for male immigrant workers than for female immigrant workers. The findings imply that new immigrants and natives are not perfect substitutes, and the competition between new immigrants and established-immigrants is at a higher level.

Abstract:
The considerable increase in international trade and migration flows can be treated as the consequence of globalization and economic integration process during the recent years. The issue of immigration impact on trade has been studied a lot since the middle of 1990s and a significant and positive effect was found in most of the cases. This paper contributes to previous studies by investigating the impact of immigrants from 155 countries on Sweden’s exports to and imports from these countries during the period from 1980 till 2010, using an augmented gravity model. The impact of immigrants on exports and imports is studied separately by looking at the whole period results and the dynamic of changes within the period. Besides this the influence of immigrants’ home countries peculiarities (by dividing them on regions and level of development) and immigrants’ type (immigrant stock, immigrant flow and asylum seekers) is tested. To the best of my knowledge it is the first study that implements this variety of classification tests for Swedish data. The empirical results suggest that a 10 % increase in immigrant stock facilitates a 1% increase in exports to and a 0.5% increase of Sweden’s imports from the immigrants’ home countries. There is a tendency of gradual decrease of immigrants’ impact on both exports and imports within the period under consideration. According to the different classification tests the immigrants from Africa have the largest impact on Sweden’s exports, though European immigrants have the largest impact on imports; Swedish foreign born population from developed countries more facilitate trade than those who are from developing; new comers and temporary immigrants have almost the same impact on exports as the total immigrant stock, but there is even slightly negative effect on trade by asylum seekers.

Abstract:
The consequences of immigration have been heavily discussed by researchers, economists, politicians and people in general. The existing literature regarding immigration and its impact on the economy is divided and looked upon through different perspectives. Therefore, it could be said that immigration and its economic impact on the host country is a controversial subject. The purpose of this study is to analyse the impact of immigration on the European OECD countries economy by looking at the unemployment rate and GDP per capita for two different time periods, those being 1985-2000 and 2006-2016, to see the effect of each time period and to compare the waves of immigration. The methodology used is a fixed effect regression. The results obtained were in line with the existing theory showing a positive impact or no impact at all of immigration on the unemployment rate and GDP per capita, but shared different results across time.

Abstract:
The interest in the effects of immigration on the UK labour market has increased in the past decade. According to the ONS, the upsurge of non-EU citizens in the UK began in 1997 and peaked in 2004 before declining thereafter. Following the A8- accession in 2004, the migration of EU citizens has witnessed a cyclical pattern by increasing till the recession, declining, and then increasing again in recent years. Migration patterns have also changed regionally. For example, traditionally immigrant attracting regions such as London saw the lowest percentage increase in foreign born workers, whereas regions like the North east of England, Wales and Scotland gained popularity between 2005 and 2016. This thesis aims at understanding the impact of immigration on UK regional wages between 1991 and 2016. The analysis presented in this thesis is split by the pre-and post-recession periods using the BHPS and the UKHLS datasets. The instrument variable based estimation results suggest that at the regional level, immigration had an insignificant impact on native average wages in the pre-recession period (1999-2009) but had a negative impact in the postrecession period (2009-2016) in Great Britain. For England, the results were negative in the pre-recession period possibly indicating the importance of migration to the labour markets of Scotland and Wales. Allowing for imperfect substitution between natives and immigrants, at the wage distribution level of the natives, the results concluded that in the pre-recession period, immigrants had a negative impact on the 10th wage percentile. In the post-recession period, the impact was concluded to be positive at all percentiles and insignificant at the 10th wage percentile. The analysis was also extended by including the regional role of capital adjustment with imperfect substitution between immigrants and natives. The results indicated that immigrants had a negative impact on regional average wages of England from 2009-2016.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Immigration detention leads to poor mental health outcomes. Little qualitative research has been conducted focusing on immigrants’ experiences of detention centres or the mechanisms of the particular psychosocial processes involved in harm and resilience, particularly for women in the UK. Method: A social constructionist grounded theory methodology was used. Ten adults (seven females), previously detained in UK immigration detention, were interviewed. Transcribed interview data was analysed to develop categories. Results: An initial model of the psychosocial processes of immigration detention was developed, which included the means by which individuals’ adaptation, resistance, and survival is navigated. Life as a liminal refugee and imposed criminality through institutionalisation and an unjust system was described. Detainees were not believed and felt uncared for. Detainees internalised persecution, injustice, and threat. They responded with physical and emotional. Detainees also responded with agency and defiance. They supported each other and made use of advocates. Recovery after release from detention involved processing and re-establishing oneself, despite on-going challenges. Discussion: Immigration detention has enduring effects that reflect internalisation of institutional processes. Disempowerment and resilience are discussed. Treatment may be similar to that used for complex therapy. Professionals should consider ethics and actions in relation to immigration detention.

Dimitriadis, Lisa J. "The Impact of Immigration Variables on Tuberculosis Rates in South Carolina." ScholarWorks, 2015. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/513.

Abstract:
After HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) is the deadliest single infectious agent worldwide; globally in 2013, 1.5 million people died of the disease. Although TB infection rates in the United States are low compared to that of other countries, TB still remains a threat to public health in the U.S., especially among immigrant populations. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the correlations between the independent variables of immigration status, years of residence, and race/ethnicity and the dependent variable of TB infection within South Carolina between 2006 and 2012. To examine these possible relationships, this quantitative study employed the ecological perspective theory and used secondary data from the Center for Disease Control's Online Tuberculosis Information System. The data were analyzed via linear regression and the findings indicated that the most statistically significant predictors of TB infection rates among the study population were immigration status and race/ethnicity. By analyzing the relationships between the study variables and population through relevant data analysis, this study provides public health professionals with additional resources to assist in designing effective TB interventions that have the highest likelihood of stemming the spread of TB. These factors also have the potential to illicit positive social change, not only within South Carolina but also on the national level by decreasing the incidence and prevalence of TB and allowing for the best use of resources to targeted populations most at risk for the disease.

Abstract:
Trafficking human beings is a global phenomenon that has garnered increasing international attention in recent years. Globalization has created a growing awareness of Western socio-economic advantages among people of poorer, developing countries, and has led to a pursuit of legal and illegal methods of migration. International concerns regarding heightened national security, stemming from the global war on terrorism, have implications on illegal methods of migration, in particular human trafficking. Over the past two decades, many immigrant-receiving countries, including Canada, have repositioned the immigration issue as a security threat and foreigners or migrants are now seen as outside the circle of legality. Thus, Western governments implemented stricter immigration policies with more rigorous border controls to ensure the security and stability of their nation. This thesis investigates the relationship between stricter migration policies and human trafficking. Restrictive immigration policies in Canada confine migrants into exploitative temporary visa programs such as exotic dancers and live-in caregivers. Studies and available information demonstrate these programs leave migrants extremely vulnerable and susceptible to exploitation.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to examine the effect that immigrants have on the wagegap in the United States. Immigrants have been defined in this research as individuals who have been born outside the United States whereas non-immigrants are individuals who are born in the United States and thus have automatic citizenship. The conceptual model has been divided into three component parts consisting of the Individual segment, the Structural segment and the Discrimination/Disadvantaged Groups segment. Various literatures on the subject of immigrants and the wages they earn argue that there is devaluation and sorting that takes place. Data for this thesis has been obtained from the 2008 Current Population Survey (CPS). An univariate and bivariate analysis was performed which showed that, among other variables, immigrants are more likely to be younger and have fewer years of education than non-immigrants. Data from this analysis also showed that immigrants are more likely to have at least a High School diploma. An Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) Regression analysis was also performed for this thesis. The resultant data shows that immigrants indeed earn fewer wages than non-immigrants. In addition, the data shows that the Individual model segment has a greater effect on the immigrants groups than it does for the non-immigrants.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of my dissertation is to further our understanding of why some states restricted immigrant access to welfare in the 1990s while other states granted immigrants access to social programs. With the passage of the Personal Responsibility Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA), many states diverged from equal access to welfare programs, such as Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), for immigrants arriving after 1996. Very little scholarly work examines the variance in immigrants’ access to welfare programs. Current research studying welfare attitudes and policy has largely failed to investigate whether and how the influx of immigrants over the last three to four decades has decreased public support for welfare programs and resulted in policies that both decrease benefit levels and restrict access to programs based on citizenship. This is a serious shortcoming because immigration since the 1970s represents the largest population shift since the early 20th century, a change that has increased the size of the underclass and transformed the cultural and racial makeup of theUnited States. Accordingly, in my dissertation, I will examine how changes to the American political environment, immigration levels and the increasing number of immigration media stories, trigger authoritarian attitudes that in turn form a breeding ground supporting restrictive welfare programs. The results from the individual-level analysis provide strong evidence that authoritarians prefer less welfare spending, fewer immigrants, and a waiting period before immigrants can access welfare programs. In addition, authoritarians view immigrants as a threat due to their perceived failure to socially conform to American society. Building on these individual-level results, I find that states with large authoritarian populations are more likely to adopt restrictive welfare policies.

Sawa, Sinjalo Magdelina. "The impact of immigration policies on socio-economic transformation in South Africa." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/60090.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation looks at the impact of immigration policies on socio-economic transformation in South Africa, which constitutionally is established as an open and democratic country. The multi-racial society that South Africa is today composed of is undoubtedly the result of a long history of immigration that has for over the centuries advanced the economy significantly. The study illustrates that among other determinants, immigration in South Africa is regulated by international as well as domestic law, which the government has committed to comply with. Though immigrants bring lots of benefits to the country as established through research, government?s immigration policies have in recent times become increasingly restrictive, coupled with a general xenophobic attitude, especially towards immigrants from other African countries. Looking at the imperative for socio-economic transformation introduced with the advent of constitutional democracy in 1994, the study makes the argument that the state resources deployed by the government in trying to combat immigration could instead be used productively in promoting socio-economic transformation by developing the skills capacity of many South Africans. Owing to the fact that African immigrants in South Africa are according to research findings established to be highly educated, skilled and entrepreneurial, their presence in the country could more effectively be explored to develop the productive capabilities of the majority of largely unskilled South African citizens and by so doing, significantly advance socio-economic transformation in the country. On the basis of this analysis, a number of recommendations are made necessitating the government to take concrete action in ensuring that immigration contributes meaningfully to socio-economic development in the country.

Abstract:
The impact of immigrants on the labour market in the South African context has always been a long standing issue with both government and natives’ fearing for the latter’s displacement effect, pressure on wages and resources. Migrants are blamed for poor labour market conditions of a host country. Literature reviewed from Africa and elsewhere shows that migrants have negative outcomes on the host country’s labour market. For this study an Error Correction Model on time series data from 1980-2006 has been estimated. The study estimated two models that is the unemployment and the wages models. The variables used for estimation are immigration, inflation and the Gross Domestic Product. The study surprisingly found a positive impact of immigrants on wages but the effect on employment was negative and significant. It is important to note here that the calculated impact is only for the documented immigrants the impact the illegal ones is not known.

Abstract:

Castoe, Minna, and Aalekhya Sanyal. "The Impact of Immigration on Income Inequality : Evidence from Sweden and the United States."

Abstract:
This paper studies data from a 25-year period in the history of Sweden and the US, ranging from 1993 to 2017. The aim of the thesis was to investigate the impact of immigration on the income inequality of the respective countries while also considering the impact of other specific variables. In order to estimate the impact of the variables, both static and dynamic models were used, with the Gini coefficient being the dependent variable. With the ordinary least square giving short-run estimates and the error correction model providing short- and long- run estimates simultaneously, the main variable for immigration, being the foreign-born population, showed a strong positive relationship with income inequality. For the estimation, the immigration variable was also split into high- and low-skilled immigrants as well as different age groups. In conclusion, we find that immigration in Sweden and the US has high levels of influence on the income inequality for both countries.

Paterson, Ian. "Love thy neighbour? : the impact of political and religious elite discourse on immigration attitudes." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2017. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/8642/.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the last three decades, and most recently during the Brexit debate, migration has increasingly been framed as a security issue in the UK and beyond. Amidst what has become a divisive and at times toxic debate on migration, the importance of developing a nuanced understanding of the security-migration nexus, particularly regarding the construction of immigration attitudes, is more pressing than ever. While research has determined a series of variables that impact on immigration attitudes, the influence of elite cues has been underexplored and restricted to political elites and political parties. Moreover, the analysis of the content of migration cues espoused by UK elites has been underdeveloped. Drawing on and extending the Copenhagen School’s securitization theory and applying a mixed-methods approach, the aim of this thesis is to contribute to our understanding of how immigration attitudes are shaped. Using discourse analysis, the central migration frames from the four largest UK-wide parties (Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats and UKIP) are identified, between 2005-2015. The thesis then expands on this limited set of actors to include a previously neglected, but potentially highly influential group – religious elites – and conducts a discourse analysis of elite migration messaging for the two largest UK faiths (Anglicanism and Catholicism). Unsurprisingly political elite cues present migration in predominantly negative terms (securitizing frames). This is in contrast, however, to the predominantly positive migration cues (desecuritizing frames) from religious elites. Nevertheless analysing discursive constructions of migration alone cannot determine whether these elite cues are having any effect on public attitudes. Therefore, quantitative analyses using data from the European Social Survey are introduced to connect elite discourse to immigration attitudes – in securitization parlance, to ‘bring in the audience’. The findings from the statistical analyses broadly support the argument that elite cues can influence immigration attitudes, and therefore contribute to the de/construction of security issues. Overall this thesis enriches our understanding of the drivers of immigration attitudes, the discursive de/construction of migration as a security issue and the role of non-traditional elite actors in the de/construction of migration as a security issue. More broadly, the thesis also speaks to the strengths and limitations of securitization theory both theoretically and methodologically.

Ruiz, Elena Rosa. "Undocumented Immigration and Southern Arizona's Healthcare System: A Case Study on the Impact of Undocumented Immigration on the U.S. Health Services System and Related Policy Implications." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/146642.

Full text
Abstract:
Undocumented immigration is a serious policy issue directly affecting states along the US-Mexico border, and as healthcare costs increase, health systems in border communities are strained. The issues surrounding undocumented immigration and healthcare include the financial costs incurred by the healthcare providers, consequences specific to Arizona, medical implications for the population, and questions regarding the potential costs and benefits of including undocumented immigrants in a system of healthcare coverage. After reviewing the available literature, interviews were conducted with healthcare providers throughout Southern Arizona, which exposed a different view of the financial and human costs borne by both the providers and the population. This new perspective requires a holistic policy approach to balance the competing needs of financial sustainability for providers and fair access to care for those unable to afford medical services. Further research is necessary to expand upon the results of the interviews with healthcare providers, but it is clear that the issue must be reframed to fully capture the costs and benefits involved as undocumented immigrants access the US healthcare system.

Duffy, Maureen T. "The U.S. immigration detentions in the war on terror : impact on the rule of law." Thesis, McGill University, 2005. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=82658.

Full text
Abstract:
The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, resulted in dramatic legal changes in the U.S. As part of its investigation into the attacks, the U.S. Government detained approximately 5,000 "aliens" from predominantly Muslim countries. These detentions were characterized by minimal, and sometimes non-existent, habeas corpus and due-process protections. During times of crisis, care should be taken that panic not be allowed to prevail over long-cherished constitutional values. This thesis examines Government actions in light of constitutional principles to examine the larger question of whether the War on Terror detention practices have permanently undermined the rule of law in the U.S.
The factual and legal scenarios in this area have been changing at a rapid rate, and they will certainly continue to change. Those constant changes have presented a special challenge in writing this thesis. The facts and legal scenarios described herein, therefore, are current as of January 31, 2005.

Cranston, Emma C. "Labor-Market effects of Immigration: Migration's Impact on Host Countries' Wages and Rates of Employment." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2016. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/752.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to define and expand upon methods used to determine wage and employment effects of immigration on host countries’ labor markets. We start by examining existing literature, defining theoretical frameworks and exploring some of the empirical methods used to make these estimates. Using pooled OECD data from 2003 to 2013, we then attempt to combine an area-effects empirical model with macroeconomic assumptions about wage and unemployment determinants. Results line up somewhat with existing literature; there is no evidence that wages are affected by migrant inflows, though surprisingly, aggregated employment estimates are much larger than expected.
