While a large literature exists on the siting of controversial facilities, few theories about spatial location have been tested on large samples. Using a new dataset from Japan, this paper demonstrates that state agencies choose localities judged weakest in local civil society as host communities for controversial projects. In some cases, powerful politicians deliberately seek to have facilities such as nuclear power plants, dams and airports placed in their home constituency. This paper then explores new territory: how demographic, political and civil society factors impact the outcomes of si

Abstract. The degradation of ground vegetation cover caused by large grazing herbivores frequently results in enhanced erosion rates in forest ecosystems. Splash erosion can be caused by drop impacts with a high throughfall kinetic energy (TKE) from the tree canopy. Notably larger canopy drips from structurally mediated woody surface points appear to induce even higher TKE and generate concentrated impact locations causing severe focus points of soil erosion. However, TKE at these locations has rarely been reported. This pilot study investigated the intensity of TKE at a concentrated impact lo

Simultaneous estimation of both the location and force history of an impact applied on a lattice truss core sandwich panel is inversely carried out utilizing velocity signals collected by means of a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer. The algorithm assumes that several impact forces are exerted concurrently on a number of specified locations on a panel, provided that the magnitude of all impact forces but one is actually equal to zero. This condition equates to a scenario where an impact occurs at only one location. The purpose is therefore to detect the actual impact location among all potenti

A number of potential impact locations on the panel are assumed to be known a priori. An actual impact is then occurred at one or two of these locations. The model predicts that native workers benefit from undocumented immigration due to its strong job creation effect. In the second chapter, we document that immigrants in the US concentrate in large, expensive cities, where their earnings gap to natives is higher, and that they consume less local goods than natives. This chapter assesses the effects of "Eastern" EU-enlargement on the race for FDI and the policy implications. We start from the proposition that the evolving production patterns of incumbent and new member states determine the need for and the justification of location policy (LP) and FDI promotion policy (FDI-PP). On the basis of empirical production patterns, it is argued that while the specialisation outcome dominates in the short run, the convergence scenario is more likely to prevail in the medium term. Therefore, old and new EU-members will compete increasingly for the same type of FDI.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of location and size on sponsorships in collegiate athletics. The study compared university?s number of sponsors based on size in terms of student population and size of a respective football program. The study also compared industry sponsorship rate to location of an athletic department. Small universities, under 15,000 students, were found to have a greater number of sponsors than large universities with 15,000 or more students. The size of the football program had no relationship on the total number of sponsors for an athletic department.

Current standards and regulations for gas transmission pipelines classify pipeline corridors into location classes and specify design factors accordingly. In the U.S., the current class location system was developed in the 1950's to mitigate increased potential of equipment impact due to frequent excavation activities in developed areas (Shires and Harrison 1998, Michalopoulos and Babka 2000). By using relatively low design factors for populated areas, the increased wall thickness provides extra protection to resist equipment impact with corresponding increase in costs.
