Abstract:
This chapter attempts to address the issues about the role of criminal justice agencies within prisoners’ families and communities, and how social inequalities consequently become heightened and entrenched, through the conceptual lens of legitimacy. It considers the idea that prison officers cannot simply impose their authority. Rather, the terms of these power relations should be defined by clear rules, consented to by prisoners, and also justifiable from their perspective. These arguments are instructive in this chapter as they highlight the importance of justice, fairness, and respect in achieving legitimacy. They also reveal the damaging effects when these qualities are absent from seemingly ‘everyday’ interactions.

Abstract:
Emotional conflict is elaborately and heroically portrayed in another part of Heliodorus’ finale. Contrast between the sexes, and some humour, enter in too. The king Hydaspes is torn between fatherly and patriotic urges. A wealth of imagery and bold use of language absorb the attention without rhythm—not that such means are lacking to rhythmic writers, but the impact of the whole is different: more sweeping, less sharply defined. The differences from Chariton are salient, and Chariton’s rhythm is much involved in them.

Abstract:
Pamela Hansford Johnson’s childhood was spent in a theatrical household in Battersea. Her grandfather had been treasurer to Sir Henry Irving, and her mother and her aunts at one time or another were all on the stage. Her father was largely absent when she was growing up since he was a Chief Railway Storekeeper on the African Gold Coast. He died when she was eleven years old. She attended a Clapham grammar school where she was an excellent student but for financial reasons was forced to leave school and take a course in shorthand-typing. While working in a West End bank for four years, she published her first novel and began to mix with a crowd of young writers. Exotically good-looking, she attracted many admirers, among them the conductor Leopold Stokowski.

Abstract:
The close relationship between the two originally anonymous gospels that came to be ascribed to Marcion and to Luke is universally recognized. Attempting to reconstruct Marcion’s Gospel from the patristic sources, one finds passages attested as present, passages attested as absent, and passages that are simply unattested. Though there are a number of passages unattested, there is extant testimony concerning the presence or absence of a significant amount of material in Marcion’s Gospel. Given Marcion’s rejection of the Old Testament as scripture for his church, and his rejection of the Creator God and denial that this God was the father of Jesus Christ, it is striking that references to scriptural figures occur in Marcion’s Gospel as well as Luke’s. By raising the question of how these figures are presented and employed in these two gospels, this chapter highlights the inadequacy of simplistic views about the relationship between these texts.
