Abstract:
Viewed from a theoretical and empirical perspective, the ongoing process of Europeanization poses new challenges to sociology. As a science, sociology reveals the inadequacy of the conceptual and methodological instruments currently available for our understanding of European social phenomena. Sociologists fi nd it di cult to defi ne the very object under scrutiny: does a European society exist? How should we defi ne a society whose boundary lines are variable? Does a study of Europe from a sociological perspective entail a study of the European Union, or of a broader social formation? e di culty encountered in "studying Europe" in the sociological area is linked to a broader theoretical debate which, in the light of the ongoing processes of change, queries the entire cognitive apparatus and the theoretical paradigms developed by sociological disciplines and related to the modernity of the western world. e "national constellation" of norms, institutions and regulative techniques which have allowed political and social integration within the national state, are now challenged by phenomena which undermine their very epistemological foundations. e concepts applied to the study of social and political integration, - society, state, legitimacy, social inequality, mobility, justice, solidarity, etc.- are, in a classic defi nition of the term, no longer e cient in discerning the phenomena which impact on contemporary societies. e variety of themes discussed by several Italian and foreign authors explore many aspects of the workings of Europe; they reveal new theoretical and methodological perspectives with which we set out to study the political, social, cultural and economic phenomena which today characterize Europe.

Abstract:
This volume presents a series of issues or even social phenomena that were presented within the international conference organized on 19th of March 2021 in the online environment by specialists in the field. A social phenomenon more and more worrying is the abortion and, therefore, it should be a topic at this conference. Considering that there is a declining birth rate at global level and the legislations are more and more permissive concerning the abortion, there are more than enough reasons for this topic be approached at the conference. By analysing this global phenomenon, were identified the causes leading to abortion, being the first step in finding solutions in terms of stopping the phenomenon. Within this conference, they also discussed about early trauma, separation anxiety and school inadequacy. In other words, psychic traumas that children can suffer even before they are born. Due to the fact that in contemporary society parents have less time to spend quality time with their children, there are more and more cases of psychological traumas in children. Although existing before birth, these traumas are accentuated during the kindergarten and it can affect the child at school integration.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the epidemiology and range of psychological distress phenomena experienced by survivors of critical illness. The phenomena most commonly reported on are posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depressive, and general (or nonspecific) anxiety symptoms. Approximately 1 in 5 critical illness survivors has clinically significant PTSD symptoms, 1 in 3 has clinically significant depressive symptoms, and 1 in 3 has clinically significant anxiety symptoms. These phenomena are associated with diminished quality of life and functioning. Risk factors include pre-critical illness anxiety and depression, in-critical illness sedative doses and nightmare-like experiences, and post–critical illness psychological distress and poor coping early in the recovery period. Given the association between critical illness and psychological distress, it is important to address survivors’ mental health needs.
