Abstract:
Several thousand tests throughout the world have been conducted on the shear strength of screw connections in cold-formed steel, however, little to no research has been conducted on how various thicknesses of insulation placed between two sheets of steel, such as a steel panel and structural supporting member, affects a screw's shear strength. Elemental tests were conducted as part of this study at Virginia Tech where rolled fiberglass insulation was placed between two pieces of steel connected by self-drilling screws and tested to failure. Comparison is done on the two Swedish manufacturers of CPTu probes, by different calibration limits, filter types and whether overloading the probe over the calibration limit affects the evaluated undrained shear strength registered. We study axisymmetric deformations of depleted uranium (DU) and tungsten heavy alloy (WHA) rods impacting at normal incidence both a rigid, planar target and a thick, deformable steel target. Each deformable material is modeled as elastic thermoviscoplastic; the flow stress increases with an increase in the effective plastic strain and effective plastic strain-rate but decreases with a rise in the temperature. An objective of this work is to ascertain when and where a shear band, defined as a narrow region of rapid, intense plastic deformation, forms in each material subject to impact loading.

This thesis aims to study and explore the drop-weight impact-induced solidification process of an STF, consisting of 58 vol% styrene/acrylate particles in ethylene glycol, in a finite volume. The study begins with the characterisation of the mechanical behaviours (i.e., rheological and confined compression behaviours) of the STF. Low-velocity drop-weight impact experiments are conducted to investigate the effect of the STF’s dimensions in a finite volume on the impact behaviour of the STF. It is found that the impact behaviour is related to both the depth and the diameter of the STF. A new mo

Prolonged sitting has been shown to impair endothelial function in children, yet the mechanisms underlying this remain unclear. In adults, there is a decline in endothelial function, indexed using flow-mediated dilation (FMD), after 1 hour of sitting. When localized heating was used to increase shear stress, the sitting-induced reduction in FMD can be prevented, confirming this decline was shear-stress mediated. The relationship between FMD and shear stress is weaker in children and whether limb heating increases shear stress and FMD in children is unknown. We therefore examined the time-cours

Abstract:

Abstract:
In recent years, due to growing environmental awareness, considerable attention has been given to the development and production of natural fibre reinforced polymer (both thermoset and thermoplastic) composites. The main objective of this study was to reinforce epoxy and polylactic acid (PLA) with hemp fibre to produce improved composites by optimising the fibre treatment methods, composite processing methods, and fibre/matrix interfacial bonding. An investigation was conducted to obtain a suitable fibre alkali treatment method to: (i) remove non-cellulosic fibre components such as lignin (sen

Abstract:
Millions of people in the world, particularly women and people in sub-Saharan Africa, suffer from hunger and poverty. Three of the major 2015-2030 United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to eliminate hunger through food security and sustainable agriculture, eradicate poverty, and achieve gender equality through women’s empowerment. Shea trees and their associated fruit and butter can play a major role in each of these three SDGs for women and their families throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Shea trees are located over a wide expanse stretching more than 5,000 kilometers across ov
