Full textA brief history of lighting systems and a presentation of the terminologies and uses associated with them are presented first. Next, a systemic analysis of the challenges of the Anthropocene and what they imply for societal transition presents the context of this work. It highlights the need for material and energy sobriety, which is essential for mitigating climate crises. This is followed by an initial assessment of the benefits and risks associated with the development of new lighting technologies. The recent revolution in lighting systems, which has seen LED technology widely adopted, has led to considerable progress in terms of energy efficiency during the use phase and has thus helped to reduce the environmental impacts and costs associated with lighting systems. However, despite major advances in energy efficiency, many questions have arisen about the potential impacts of lighting systems on our environment, health, well-being and productivity, both positive and negative, which should not be ignored. A broad bibliographical study develops each of these impacts, ranging from photo-biological risks to light pollution, and including various socio-technical aspects linked to the use of lighting. Finally, a study of the different impact analysis methods in existence or under development is carried out in order to identify their advantages and limitations. While Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is probably the most effective and recognised tool for studying the impacts of products and services, its evolutions, Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) and Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCA), are still in the process of being developed and will probably require a few more years before they are uniformly recognised and used. Various case studies then discuss the imperatives of durability and efficiency, notably through the influence of the electricity mix on the results and conclusions of the LCA of lighting systems. This first study introduces the "maintained Megalumen.hour" as a functional unit and highlights different energy profiles as well as the presence of a tipping point in France which tends to see the manufacturing phase contribute as much, or even more, to the potential impacts as the use phase (in a similar way to electronic or computer equipment). This observation encourages us to go beyond energy efficiency and makes the durability and the end of life of lamps a determining parameter that needs to be developed. Secondly, a life cycle cost analysis (LCC) method confirms this durability imperative by defining an economic optimum of life span approximately twice as long as the average lamp currently on the market. Finally, this work focuses on a multi-criteria analysis of an emerging use of lighting systems: horticultural greenhouses. First, an LCA is carried out to evaluate the performance and impacts of different lamps specific to this use. Next, a quantification of light pollution on the walls and outside of the greenhouse highlights the systems that contribute most to nocturnal light pollution and the means to prevent it. Then a return on investment study evaluates the economic performance of the different configurations tested. Finally, a multi-criteria analysis based on the hierarchical analysis process (HPA) was used to determine which lighting systems are the most relevant according to all the above parameters and results. The results indicate that HPS and LED lamps perform best from the point of view of three observers: "environment", "light nuisance" and "economy". Finally, the results are discussed and some recommendations are proposed to improve the uses and practices around lighting

Full textLand use change for the purpose of development always comes with conflicts among different stakeholders, especially under the construction or expansion of developmental projects in developing countries. Thus, infrastructural projects like dams have both positive and negative consequences in this regard. The conflicts in such projects emerge with view of issues associated with the superposition of land expectation, as well as different stakeholders' interests. They appear in different forms, depending upon their intensity, with severe impacts on local people. The article deals with conflicts arising among different actors and their socioeconomic impacts on affected people, due to construction of Diamer Bhasha Dam project in Pakistan. This project started facing opposition from land acquisition and encouraged protestations, legal action in court, road blockage, threatening the project contractor, and violation. In order to analyze the conflicts and to assess the socioeconomic impacts of the project, we used both primary and secondary data sources. About 61 interviews with experts and stakeholders of different backgrounds were conducted. Moreover, under the secondary source about 289 articles from different national and regional dailies on conflicts and socioeconomics impacts of the Dam were studied in order to cross check the information. Further, some literature published by public and private organizations was also consulted.Preliminary results show different conflicts between affected people and Government and also among different groups of locally affected people, over land compensations and property rights. This study further highlights the socioeconomic issues of the project in the form of ineffective resettlement plan and loss of employment opportunities. It further, explores the root causes of conflicts, due to poor planning and governance, mismanagement, corruption and cronyism in different project activities. Lack of participation of all stakeholders and proper information dissemination about all project activities are also main source of conflicts among different actors. Finally, it provides policy measures and recommendations for better governance in the form of capacity building of local people in different areas and participation of all stakeholders in all project activities

Full textEuropean pig production is facing economic and environmental challenges. Decision support tools can help farmers testing the effects of rearing factors on their production system. For this purpose, we developed an individual-based model of the pig fattening unit which includes farmers’ practices, individual variability in performance among pigs and, and estimates economic results (ECO) and environmental impacts (ENV) of the unit. Global sensitivity analysis has shown that the model behavior is consistent and that the most influent input variables are related to the pigs’ characteristics. Formal comparison of predicted with observed data has enabled us to produce a process for parameterisation of the model and has shown that the model provides reliable estimates of ECO and ENV.A virtual experiment using the model was designed in order to evaluate the combined effects of feeding practices, health status of the pig herd, and infrastructure on technical performance, ECO and ENV of the unit. Health status has the major impact on unit performance but this effect can be reduced through batch management and feeding strategies. Approaching more closely the individual pigs’ nutritional requirements seems to be an appropriate solution to increase farm income and to reduce environmental impacts regardless the health status. The model will be included into a decision support tool designed according to the influent inputs resulting from the sensitivity analysis and the parameterisation process

Full textBased on two case studies in the Philippines (Pampanga) and Peru (Tumbes), the goal of this thesis was to analyze the development of aquaculture with an emphasis on the initial causes of aquaculture, its history, its spatial development, and on its socioeconomic impacts at a range of space and time scales. The methodology associates satellite image processing with fieldwork. Several pond mapping methods based on a combination of multispectral classification techniques and mathematical morphology were tested and compared. Field investigation methods involved questionnaires, interviews, harvesting of second-hand data, direct observation, and a participation in daily activities of various stakeholders. Finally, I crafted a multi-agent model based on empirical data collected in the Pampanga delta with the aim of exploring the influence of a range of environmental and social parameters on landscape evolution

Full textIn the context of climate change, as reflected by a dryer Mediterraneanbasin, this thesis focused on the study of the contemporary and future variability(1957-2100) of the wintertime (September to April) very long dryspells events (called VLDSe) in the Mediterranean basin. An original methodologywas developed in this thesis in order to define VLDSe as singularclimatic events, characterized by location, duration and spatial extent criteria.76 VLDSe were detected in the Mediterranean basin on the contemporaryperiod (1957-2013). These events are divided into 4 main geographicalpatterns: North-East, West, Scattered Localized and South-East. North-East and West configurations are associated with anticyclonic conditionslocated approximately 1 000 km northwestern to the areas affected by theVLDSe, favoring a clear sky and no precipitations. The Scattered Localizedand South-East configurations are special: the first one is characterized asa residual class grouping VLDSe with small spatial extent and distributedthroughout the entire basin, and the second one is characterized by seasonalVLDSe which are the continuation of the dry summer observed in the eastof the Mediterranean basin.Euro-Atlantic weather regimes have some control on the VLDSe. Thepositive phase of the north-atlantic oscillation regime (NAO+) is the onlyone that is clearly favorable to the development of VLDSe on almost the entirebasin. The east-atlantic regime (EA) does not show any control on theVLDSe, and the atlantic ridge (AR) and the negative phase of the northatlanticoscillation (NAO-) regimes are generally detrimental to VLDSe. However, some VLDSe can sometimes be associated with AR, EA and NAOregimes. This requires these three weather regimes to be associated withslightly higher atmospheric pressure northwest of the areas impacted bythe VLDSe, compared to their respective climatology. Long duration of theAR, EA and NAO+ regimes, which are coupled with sustained atmosphericstability, are preferentially associated with VLDSe, in contrast to the shortduration. Conversely, the long duration of the NAO- regime, reinforcingthe low atmospheric pressure on Europe and the Mediterranean basin, areweakly associated with VLDSe.Although the two climate models ALADIN52 and LMDZ4-NEMOMED8 differ in several respects, they agree in that VLDSe should be longer by 2100,especially in the RCP8.5 trajectory. A multi-model analysis with 12 CMIP5simulations shows that wintertime sea-level pressure tends to increase in theAtlantic Ocean, off the French coast and in the central the Mediterraneanbasin for the RCP8.5 trajectory. Conversely, the frequency and duration ofthe 4 weather regimes do not show significant trends until the end of the21st century. Finally, a study is carried out to assess the impact of VLDSe on agriculturalproduction in Spain. The number of VLDSe days has a larger impactson the yields of barley, wheat and oats (winter species and cultivatedthrough rainfed agriculture) than the simple ratio of dry days or seasonalrainfall amounts in Spain. A two-season case study, based on seasons withcomparable rainfall amounts, shows that in addition to yields, a VLDSecauses a significant decrease in soil moisture and in the Ebro River flow

Full textLife Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a multicriteria method to assess environmental impacts of goods and services. In its early stages, LCA, known as Attributional (ALCA), was used to assess environmental impacts in a status-quo situation for benchmarking, environmental communication and product development. Recent methodological developments led to Consequential LCA (CLCA), which aims to quantify direct and indirect impacts of changes, through market mechanisms, allowing for public policy assessment. The aim of this Ph.D. thesis is to develop a methodological framework to assess public policy instruments in the livestock sector by combining LCA and economic modellingThis thesis is organized into three axes: i) identification and characterization of environmental performances of dairy production technologies through ALCA; ii) adaptation of MATSIM-LUCA economic model to the needs of the thesis; iii) environmental impact assessment through CLCA of dairy quota removal and implementation of a grass premium in the European Union. This work provides i) initial development of a methodological framework for assessing public policy instruments in the livestock sector and ii) identification of several improvements needed to make the method operational for stakeholders
