Full textWaste combustion has always aroused great apprehension and, in some cases, hostility by population, cause of emission of organic and inorganic micro pollutants. In the last years attention has been oriented toward the particular matter’s more fine fractions (PM10 and PM2,5 and smaller). The need to define a limit for emissions in atmosphere, for a given typology of industrial plants, derive from considerations linked to the technological cycle (e.g. use of raw materials, fuels, modality conduction, etc.), to flue-gas treatment and control systems and also to working modalities of the plant. These considerations define the performance of the technological cycle; these aspects are treated in the reference documents for the best available techniques (Best available techniques REFerence document), released by the European group Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control Bureau Directive 96/61/EC). While measuring combustion plants emissions, high temperatures condition the physical state of some pollutants. For this reason the choice of measure method can lead to different results, in case of particular matter. In practice survey of particular matter is made by manual methods (UNICHIM, UNI EN, ISO) that a sampling probe and an isokinetic sampling. For this reason in the research field a study has been done of methods up to date existing in other Countries and a report on data obtained in the most advanced researches and a definition of manual procedures and analyses in different granulometric fractions of particular matter from incineration emissions.

Full textThe anaerobic digestion process is a well-known technology for organic waste treatment, and it met the necessity to treat wastes and recover energy from renewable sources. Recently, the urgent necessity of new energy vectors drove the scientific research to biological hydrogen production technology, through photosynthetic and fermentative processes. This PhD thesis deals with the optimization of a two-phase thermophilic anaerobic digestion process treating organic waste for hydrogen and methane production. Nor physical neither chemical pretreatment were used to treat the inoculum or the substrates in order to optimize the process for a sustainable scale-up. It was further verified the biologic stability of the digested material by means of aerobic tests, based on the dynamic respirometric index (DRI), where the oxygen uptake rate by the substrate was continuously monitored, and anaerobic tests that were based on the biochemical methane potential (BMP), where the biogas produced by digestate in long-term batch tests, was measured. These values can be used to define the stability of the reactors effluent to verify the possibility to reduce the treatment time
