van Hooft, Edwin. Self-Regulatory Perspectives in the Theory of Planned Job Search Behavior: Deliberate and Automatic Self-Regulation Strategies to Facilitate Job Seeking. Edited by Ute-Christine Klehe and Edwin van Hooft. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199764921.013.31.

Full text
Abstract:
Because job search often is a lengthy process accompanied by complexities, disruptions, rejections, and other adversities, job seekers need self-regulation to initiate and maintain job search behaviors for obtaining employment goals. This chapter reviews goal/intention properties (e.g., specificity, proximity, conflicts, motivation type) and skills, beliefs, strategies, and capacities (e.g., self-monitoring skills and type, trait and momentary self-control capacity, nonlimited willpower beliefs, implementation intentions, goal-shielding and goal maintenance strategies) that facilitate self-regulation and as such may moderate the relationship between job search intentions and job search behavior. For each moderator, a theoretical rationale is developed based on self-regulation theory linked to the theory of planned job search behavior, available empirical support is reviewed, and future research recommendations are provided. The importance of irrationality and nonconscious processes is discussed; examples are given of hypoegoic self-regulation strategies that reduce the need for deliberate self-regulation and conscious control by automatizing job search behaviors.

Full text
Abstract:
The book's primary intention is to serve as a roadmap for professionals working in developing countries interested in the Nexus Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystems (WEFE) approach. The book shows a multi-disciplinary approach, showcasing the importance of the proper use of Nexus WEFE when implementing certain development programs in regions around the globe. It can be presented as a manual for an individual that either wishes to implement intervention projects following the NEXUS approach or students interested in cooperation and development. The book begins with a general explanation of the theoretical concepts and implementation processes of Nexus WEFE and continues with case studies, explaining the importance of proper implementation and potential drawbacks and solutions to them. This book has a particular focus on the European Union cooperation policies when implementing such an approach in developing countries. Full text
Abstract:
This chapter shows that limited effects of monetary policy can reflect shortcomings of existing policy frameworks in low-income countries rather than (or in addition to) the structural features often put forward in policy and academic debates. The chapter focuses on two pervasive issues: lack of effective frameworks for implementing policy, so that short-term interest rates display considerable unintended volatility, and poor communication about policy intent. The authors introduce these features into an otherwise standard New Keynesian model with incomplete information. Implementation errors result from insufficient accommodation to money demand shocks, creating a noisy wedge between actual and intended interest rates. The representative private agent must then infer policy intentions from movements in interest rates and money. Under these conditions, even exogenous and persistent changes in the stance of monetary policy can have weak effects, even when the underlying transmission (as might be observed under complete information) is strong.

Eckert, Richard B. Field Guide to Internal Corrosion Mitigation & Monitoring for Pipelines. NACE International, The Worldwide Corrosion Authority15835 Park Ten Place, Houston, TX 77084, 2016. https://doi.org/10.5006/37610.

Full text
Abstract:
This book by renowned expert Richard Eckert is intended to help oil and gas pipeline operators, corrosion professionals, integrity experts, and risk management practitioners assess, control, and manage the effects of internal corrosion on pipeline systems, thus improving the safety, reliability and integrity of their operations. While the focus of this book is on pipelines, the content is broadly applicable to upstream equipment, processing facilities, mid-stream pipelines, liquid and gas storage assets, and delivery/distribution assets. Another intention of this book is to not only provide technical information about internal corrosion control, but also to provide suggestions and potential strategies for applying this information. The fundamental process of managing internal corrosion consists of threat assessment, mitigation selection and implementation, and monitoring the effectiveness of mitigation. This book is divided into these three main sections to help emphasize the point that corrosion management is a process, not a one-time event.

Gordalla, Barbara. Social Belonging - A Cue to Success?! Technische Universität Dresden, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.25368/2022.405.

Full text
Abstract:
Currently, the percentage of female students in STEM majors is about 17% lower than in other majors. What factors lead to this situation? A variety of factors impact student choice and persistence. The underlying master's thesis examined the relationships between gender, social belonging, belonging uncertainty, stereotype fit, and chilly climate. In particular, the focus was on exploring the influence of social belonging on selected success parameters (identification, expectation of success, turnover intention, grade point average, and number of third attempts to pass an exam performance). It also examined whether Stereotype Fit acts as a mediator on the relationship between gender and Social Belonging. The study was based on an online survey at the Faculty of Physics at the TU Dresden. The results show that women reported lower scores in Social Belonging and Stereotype Fit, and higher scores in Belonging Uncertainty. Identification was predicted by both Social Belonging and Belonging Uncertainty. Expectation of success was significantly affected by gender and Social Belonging. For grade point average and turnover intention, Social Belonging was the only significant predictor. The number of third attempts was positively predicted by Belonging Uncertainty. The hypothesis that Stereotype Fit is a mediator could not be supported by the data. Instead, exploratory mediation analyses show that Social Belonging and Belonging Uncertainty are more likely to be mediators of the relationship between gender and Stereotype Fit. All results suggest that Social Belonging is an important factor for women's success in STEM fields. Therefore, it can be inferred that promoting Social Belonging in college would have a positive impact on women's success. Current research shows that Social Belonging can be increased through low-cost and brief interventions. Implementation of promotional opportunities in the educational context is recommended as part of further research. My sincere thanks go to Dr. Anika Ihmels for the empowering supervision during the master thesis as well as the Faculty of Physics, its Equal Opportunity Officer and the FSR Physics, who made the survey possible and supported it.

Abstract:
Why does compassion appear to have disparate associations with helping, emotions, and well-being? One possibility is that, while compassion always elicits a desire to help others, it only sometimes leads to commitment to that goal. Drawing on the action-phase model of goal pursuit, I propose that compassion has the most beneficial outcomes for those in need and for potential helpers in the presence of factors that drive commitment to helping goals. Among those factors are implementation intentions with respect to helping goals, readily perceived means for helping, and perceiving that one has passed a point of no return (a.k.a. a “Rubicon”) with respect to helping goals. Research on this model may reveal with more specificity compassion’s true role in social life.

Sheeran, Paschal, Thomas L. Webb, Peter M. Gollwitzer, and Gabriele Oettingen. Self-Regulation of Affect–Health Behavior Relations. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190499037.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
The present chapter analyzes relations between affect and health behaviors from the perspective of the action control model of affect regulation. It presents evidence that forming if-then plans or implementation intentions can emancipate health actions from unwanted influence by three kinds of affect—experienced affect, anticipated affect, and implicit affect. For each of these kinds of affect, it demonstrates that emancipation can be achieved in two ways—either by directly targeting the affect itself so as to undermine the strength of the affective response, or by targeting the relationship between affect and health behavior so that the translation of affect into action is reduced or blocked. It concludes that the impact of affect on health decisions and actions is not inevitable: affective influence can be modulated effectively using if-then plans.

Spalding, Andrew. A New Megasport Legacy. Oxford University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197503614.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Though the Qatar 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup is for many a symbol of long-standing corruption and human rights problems, the event may actually represent something entirely new. Megasports are now demonstrating a capacity to leave what this book calls a human rights and anti-corruption legacy: norms, practices, policies, or laws that have application beyond sport, are likely to endure after the event, and the implementation of which is accelerated by hosting the event. In the 2010s, Brazil’s hosting of the FIFA Men’s World Cup and Summer Olympics, and then South Korea’s hosting of the Winter Olympics, left what this book calls reactive, accidental, and one-dimensional anti-corruption legacies. Most would be shocked to find that Qatar now moves this legacy concept forward, undertaking to create megasports’ first intentional and proactive human rights legacy. The first and perhaps best opportunity to build a proactive, intentional, and two-dimensional human rights and anti-corruption legacy lies in France as it prepares to host the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics while implementing new landmark anti-corruption and human rights laws. The concept may still advance in Australia and New Zealand (2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup) and Italy (2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics). However, the United Bid of Canada, the United States, and Mexico has promised the first proactive, intentional, and two-dimensional human rights and anti-corruption (“HRAC”) legacy around the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup. This book analyzes existing megasport policies and practices, then suggests reforms to acknowledge and support these new legacies.

Abstract:
This academic text presents some specific implementations related to the field of legal psychology. This specialized knowledge has the aim of studying cognitive, emotional and affective processes which explain legal behaviors in people who are involved with the legal system. The intention of this work was to incorporate different topics regarding the theoretical and epistemological foundations of criminal psychology. Femicide behavior from a psycholegal approach; the sense of community theory previously observed in a prison; and, a review on the quality of the methodology applied to testimonial psychology by analyzing psychophysical aspects of deceiving. All of it to present the technical and conceptual elements applied to criminal contexts to a reader who could be either a psychologist, attorney, policeman, judge, prosecutor, researcher of human behavior, or an undergraduate or graduated student. For them to understand that the forensic field is not only useful to public servants in law. Thus, with this work it is expected to contribute to a better understanding of this discipline not only to experts but also to novice in the field.

Darlington, Susan M. Contemporary Buddhism and Ecology. Edited by Michael Jerryson. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199362387.013.26.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter critically investigates the relationship between Buddhism and ecology, emphasizing the behaviors and intentions of practitioners rather than interpretations of early Buddhist scriptures. Through examination of the contemporary interpretations and implementations of the concept of interdependence (Pali: paticca-samuppada), animal release rituals, and the activities of Thai forest monks and environmental monks, the author aims to understand both what influences Buddhist environmental activists and the degree to which their actions are effectual. Part of this context is to understand the motivations of practitioners and the degree of environmental awareness underlying Buddhist practices that are often perceived to be ecologically friendly. Acts such as animal release rituals often result in unintentional negative ecological consequences. Yet Buddhists can have positive environmental impacts when Buddhist practices are consciously integrated with ecological principles and consequences rather than simply being labeled as environmentally friendly on an abstract level.

Abstract:
This chapter explores team innovation in the context of healthcare by integrating literature and empirical evidence from the organizational, social, and medical sciences on team innovation. Innovation encompasses the activities that transform the intentional decision to adopt and implement a new idea, process, product, or procedure into regular and sustained practice. The healthcare industry needs innovation to adapt to and manage complexity within a rapidly changing healthcare system. Interdisciplinary teams have been adopted as innovations to solve certain problems in healthcare that require coordinated interdependent action and complementary knowledge and skills, such as chronic conditions and disease management, patient safety concerns, and cancer treatment and care. Teams may also be employed to manage healthcare innovation adoption and implementation efforts, and the industry must leverage team composition and team process factors to help these healthcare teams innovate.

Abstract:
It is with great pleasure to recognise all our partners in the merSETA Viro-Vent Innovation Skills Challenge who contributed to this publication: University of Cape Town, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, University KwaZulu Natal, University of Witwatersrand and National Technologies Implementation Platform. Thank you, Professor Sivarasu, for your leadership of the University of Cape Town for supporting these efforts to find new forms of collaboration that focus on “Skills for localisation” and “Skills for re-industrialisation”. This publication comes at a time when South Africa and the world are still recovering from the devastating effects of the covid-19 pandemic complicated by an emerging war in Ukraine. This is expected to continue disrupting social and economic activities, including education, training, and work. The merSETA and its stakeholders are working tirelessly to ensure that training and other skills development activities continue despite these challenges. This innovation project, among others at the merSETA, utilises existing research and Higher Education Institution (HEI) Infrastructure to stimulate rapid response technology innovation aimed at the development, design and prototype production of a medical device in response not only to the COVID-19 pandemic, but also to an economic sector dominated by imports. To serve the skills development mandate of the merSETA, the project investigates the technology management capabilities or future skills required to accelerate South Africa’s post-covid recovery. The concept of innovation, as vested in this program, is aligned to the merSETA’s strategic intentions, that include: i. Supporting skills for Economic Reconstruction, Recovery and Growth, ii. Supporting skills for the changing world of work, iii. Supporting skills for the growth and sustainability of the green and circular economies and iv. Exploring and supporting the role of the mer-sector in the digital economy, as well as v. Continuing to strengthen the role of the SETA as an intermediary body Making informed sector skills planning decisions is the objective of this program. – that is, to understand those future jobs that would drive the localisation of components in a model that could stimulate expanded manufacturing opportunities through relevant skills supply. The merSETA’s Viro-Vent Innovation Skills Challenge anticipates a contribution towards closing the skills gap through a job generation model. The merSETA remains committed and is looking forward to engaging on how this initiative sees a pipeline of new product innovations expanding the manufacturing sector. We owe it to the citizens of South Africa to find innovative ways of harnessing our young talent into industrial expansion.

Abstract:
Interprofessional Education and Collaboration: An Evidence-Based Approach to Optimizing Health Care is a groundbreaking text in the field of interprofessional education (IPE) and interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP). As the health care industry continues to grow, it is critical that those entering health care careers possess interprofessional competency and a collaborative skill set. As such, the World Health Organization and academic program accreditors have amplified their calls for interprofessional training. This text guides the reader through the core competencies for interprofessional collaborative practice that have been set by the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) and takes an inclusive approach to the education standards set by professional programs that are members of the Health Professions Accreditors Collaborative (HPAC), including the Commission on Accreditation of the Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Authored by a team of experts representing seven health care professions, this text uses simple definitions and uniform terminology to supply a foundational basis for IPE and IPCP. Introductory topics include building professional t`knowledge of self and others, creating a culture for teams, building interprofessional relationships, and fostering collaboration. Later chapters move beyond the basics to provide guidance in leading interprofessional teams, managing conflict, and sustaining the interprofessional effort. Interprofessional Education and Collaboration offers a unique pedagogical structure that links IPE concepts with IPCP strategies by connecting research with evidence-based practices. Case studies create opportunities to assimilate and discuss IPE concepts. To optimize student engagement and comprehension, each chapter contains the following valuable learning aids: • Each chapter begins with a Case Study that presents a realistic IPCP scenario. At the close of each chapter, the case study is revisited to apply the chapter themes to the case study, and three to five discussion questions are supplied. • Collaborative Corner sidebars aid comprehension with reflective questions or statements related to chapter topics. This feature will facilitate collaborative learning as students share their interprofessional perspectives. • Tools of IPE sidebars equip readers with resources such as surveys, inventories, and activities to implement in their daily practice. • EBP of Teamship sidebars showcase contemporary research articles and findings. This feature reinforces the connection between IPE and IPCP by summarizing relevant research and supplying corresponding evidence-based ICPC strategies. As leading health care institutions continue to prioritize IPE and IPCP, educators have a responsibility to shape the future of health care through an interprofessional curriculum. Interprofessional Education and Collaboration is focused on developing a dual identity that leads to intentional behaviors designed to improve patient outcomes through IPCP. Readers will conclude this text with a firm understanding of IPE concepts and IPCP implementation strategies that aim to create change in daily practice and improve the impact of health care.
