This paper examines the export competitiveness of the manufacturing sector in Singapore. More specifically, we examine how the existence of import content of exports, productivity gains, and profit margins affect the competitiveness of Singapore’s manufacturing exports. Using proxies such as price of exports, price of imports, unit business costs, and net operating surplus over manufacturing output, we analyze our results empirically and seek to show the significance of these variables in affecting the export competitiveness in the unique case of Singapore. Abstract:
This study analyses the supply chains for medical goods across the Commonwealth countries. It assesses trade flows related to the health sector and, more specifically, import and export data for essential COVID-19 medical supplies. It also explores supply chain disruptions (trade interruptions, changes in consumption and tariffs related to imports) caused in the wake of COVID-19. Based on the analysis and key findings, it proposes policy changes and recommendations to increase the resilience of these supply chains, to protect them from such disruptions. The analysis finds that the global produ

Abstract:
The participation of China, Japan, and South Korea in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) is expected to gradually erode the Philippines’ existing trade preferences in each of these nations as tariffs between them diminish over their respective tariff liberalization timelines. Labor-intensive goods, particularly those linked to global value chains, face the highest risk of export decline, notably in China, then in Korea and Japan. To counter potential losses, this Policy Note recommends that the Philippines focus on enhancing export competitiveness. Strategies should involve

Much progress has been made in pursuing liberalization of agricultural trade in the Philippines. However, some significant tariff and non-tariff barriers remain. This study evaluates the economic impacts of completing the agenda of policy reform by removal of these remaining trade barriers. Scenario analysis using computable general equilibrium modeling finds that trade liberalization is associated with a more rapid expansion in imports and a wider agricultural trade deficit; slower growth of agricultural GDP and wages; higher overall GDP and higher industry- fiscal position and national savin

Abstract:
The United Kingdom withdrawal from the European Union Single Market will have implications for Pakistan’s exports. The UK has largely adopted the same trading regimes as the EU and, as a result, Pakistan was included in the UK Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP) Enhanced Framework (equivalent to the EU GSP+ – its Special Incentive Arrangement for Sustainable Development and Good Governance). The objective of this assignment is to analyse the situation and advise the Government of Pakistan on developing trade policies to meet the evolving post-Brexit UK import regime, to ensure it maintains

Abstract:
This paper explores the competitive threat posed by the People's Republic of China (PRC) to Latin America and Caribbean (LAC). It focuses on the impact of PRC's rise as a major exporter of manufactured goods and discusses bilateral trade between LAC and PRC. The authors explore these issues with trade data collected from 1990-2002, analyzing and comparing export performance and specialization patterns in the global market as well as in the U.S.A., which is the main market for both the PRC and LAC. Abstract:
The Philippines has adopted free trade agreements (FTAs) as a major component of its trade policy in the last two decades. As it continues to pursue trade liberalization by joining these agreements, taking a closer look at the extent of FTA utilization in the country is important. This study attempted to reveal stylized facts on the trends of Philippine FTA utilization. Using the universe of trade transactions data, FTA utilization trends were observed both from the export and import perspectives. Throughout the 2010s, FTA utilization among exporters has been low; in contrast, utilization in i

This study analyzes the firm-level impacts of temporary safeguard import tariffs implemented in Ecuador from 2015 to 2017. Employing a difference-in-differences methodology, we explore the policy's effects on a unique dataset combining firm- and product-level data. We focus on the direct effects on importing firms and indirect effects through the value chain. The analysis shows that, while the safeguards significantly reduced imports, they also resulted in short-run negative scale effects on firms. These include reduced sales, employment, labor costs, and material costs, without positive impac

This study examines the intricate trade interdependencies between Canada and the United States, highlighting how aggregate export–import figures can mask deeper economic realities. Approximately three-quarters of Canadian merchandise exports head to the United States each year, contributing to a bilateral merchandise trade surplus for Canada in the range of 100 to 170 billion Canadian dollars. Yet, when energy products are excluded, the United States shows a small surplus with Canada, illustrating how both sides benefit from specialized cross-border value chains.
