While the concept has mainly gained traction in the cultural scene in Berlin, Germany, the contributions expand the field of study by attending to cultural expressions in literature, theatre, film, and art across various European societies, such as the United Kingdom, France, Finland, Denmark, and Germany. By doing so, the contributions highlight this concept's potential and show how it can offer new perspectives on transformations caused by migration.

Abstract:

The Concept of Conversation traces the rise of conversation from a minor mode of rhetoric to the point where rhetoric as a whole was redefined as conversation, and argues that this was the most important change in rhetoric during the centuries between 1400 and 1700. In the classical period, conversation referred to real conversations, conducted in the leisure time of noble men, and concerned with indefinite philosophical topics. Christianity inflected conversation with universal aspirations during the medieval centuries and the ars dictaminis, the art of letter writing, increased the importance of this written analogue of conversation. The Renaissance humanists from Petrarch onward further transformed conversation, and its genre analogues of dialogue and letter, by transforming it into a metaphor of increasing scope. This expanded realm of humanist conversation bifurcated in Renaissance and early modern Europe. The Concept of Conversation traces the way the rise of conversation spread out from the history of rhetoric to include the histories of friendship, the court and the salon, the Republic of Letters, periodical press and women. It revises Jürgen Habermas’ history of the emergence of the rational speech of the public sphere as the history of the emergence of rational conversation and puts the emergence of women’s speech at the centre of the intellectual history of early modern Europe.

The landmark paper discussed in this chapter is ‘When words are painful: unravelling the mechanism of the nocebo effect’, published in 2007 by Benedetti et al. This major review considered the placebo and nocebo effect in a more scientific framework compared to the previous nebulous concept of a placebo as an agent whose only role is was to act as a comparator for controlled trials. By expounding robust evidence, Benedetti added credence to the placebo effect with not just psychological but physiological data acknowledging it as an effective therapeutic action. Furthermore the importance of endogenous opioids and cholecystokinin in the mechanism underlying the relief of pain by placebos was put into sharp relief, giving an intuitive basis and scientific validation to this effect.

Abstract:

This chapter argues that the study of the geographical distribution of crimes is significantly enriched when it takes into account the location of offender residences, especially high offender-rate neighborhoods. It first explains why the study of high offender neighborhoods is vital to the study of the criminology of place, both in explanatory terms and as regards implications for crime prevention. It then shows that high offender neighborhoods are not all the same, and that the single concept of social disorganization is not adequate to explain these differences. The conclusion summarizes the argument and considers its implications for the important question of the optimum units of analysis in the study of environmental criminology.

Good fetal and infant nutrition, whether derived from the mother via the placenta during gestation or via breast milk after birth, consists of the macronutrients protein, carbohydrates, and fats, all of which are needed for building the fundamental components of the body, and micronutrients such as vitamins and trace elements, which are essential structural components and cofactors in metabolic processes. Understanding the concept of a ‘balanced diet’ and the implications of maternal body composition is critical for pregnant and breastfeeding women to ensure that their metabolic adaptation to pregnancy and lactation is appropriate and that their offspring gets the required nutrients in the appropriate amount and proportion to ensure optimal development. An unbalanced diet, or over- or under-nutrition, can increase the risks of low birthweight and gestational diabetes and result in unfavourable metabolic adjustments by the fetus.

Ovarian cancer (OC) is an immunogenic tumor and among the first where measures of anti-tumor immunity correlated with improved survival. Thus, immunotherapy could be a viable OC treatment modality. Nonetheless, clinical OC immunotherapy trials have demonstrated only modest successes at best, and there is currently no Food and Drug Administration (FDA)approved OC immune therapy despite recent successes in other carcinomas and lymphomas and FDA-approved immunotherapy agents for them. New data suggest specific impediments to effective de novo and treatment-induced anti-OC immunity and support the concept that effective, tolerable OC immunotherapy could be developed based on these newer insights. This chapter reviews the history of OC immunotherapy, highlights important discoveries in OC-related immune dysfunction, covers promising recent developments, highlights newer and ongoing clinical trials, and speculates on future directions that could lead to improved OC immunotherapy approaches.

A number of prominent modern evolutionists embraced ‘human nature’, signalling their commitment to the Modern Synthesis. Their claim is that for most of our evolutionary history, culture was of little importance, and that genes, not culture, controlled early development. More recently, cultural evolutionists have argued that culture and reason were present deep in the Homo lineage, and that the ability to learn socially develops in the first year of life. Thus, it is reasonable to think that genes and culture coevolved in the evolutionary past, and that they codevelop in infancy and childhood. Human nature theorists seek to deny this claim, while at the same time trying in various ways to make room for human culture and reason. I argue here that they are unsuccessful in their attempts.

This article focuses on the role of the state in utilizing foreign direct investment (FDI) to achieve development. It begins by considering the benefits and dangers from trade-and-investment flows before turning to the long-standing debate about the merits of export-led growth vs. inward import substitution as a development strategy. It then examines whether the liberalization of trade-and-investment enhances economic growth, particularly in developing countries. The article also discusses “structural transformation” and its implications for labor-market policies; the importance of forced technology transfer in creating national champion firms; the role of an explicit industrial policy in today’s developmental state; and whether developing countries need more “policy space” for trade-and-investment policy than what they are entitled to under free trade agreements, bilateral investment treaties, and the World Trade Organization. Finally, it assesses the politics underlying the use of FDI to develop internationally competitive manufacturing industries in the host country.

Lucrarea “Antreprenoriat si administrarea afacerilor: teste si aplicatii” reprezinta un material didactic complementar suportului de curs. Prezentele teste si aplicatii incearca sa furnizeze studentilor de la specializarile cu profil economic cunostintele necesare aplicarii principalelor concepte, principii si teorii specifice disciplinei “Antreprenoriat si administrarea afacerilor”. Aceasta lucrare cuprinde sase capitole, dintre care primele patru pun accent pe testarea cunostintelor teoretice, iar ultimele doua pe rezolvarea studiilor de caz si aplicatiilor. Fiecare dintre primele patru capitole are urmatoarea structura: obiective, idei principale, concepte cheie, teste si intrebari, teme de referate si bibliografie selectiva. Primul capitol se refera la conceptul, tipologia si caracteristicile intreprinzatorului. De asemenea, acesta reliefeaza principalele scoli de gandire din domeniul antreprenoriatului si prezinta trasaturile cheie ale intreprin¬zatorilor de succes. Al doilea capitol vizeaza prezentarea conceptului de antreprenoriat si subliniaza factorii care influenteaza si formeaza capacitatea antreprenoriala. In plus, acesta evidentiaza relatia existenta intre intreprinzatori si etica in afaceri. Capitolul al treilea prezinta conexiunea existenta intre cultura si antreprenoriat si face referire la unele dintre obiectivele politicilor antreprenoriale. Al patrulea capitol reliefeaza rolul cheie jucat de inovatie in cadrul procesului antreprenorial si identifica principalele metode de intrare in afaceri. De asemenea, acesta subliniaza importanta planului de afaceri in derularea cu succes a procesului antreprenorial. Cateva studii de caz sunt prezentate in penultimul capitol in timp ce ultimul capitol se concentreaza pe calculul principalilor indicatori ai planului de afaceri. Autorii isi exprima speranta ca aceasta lucrare poate contribui la imbogatirea literaturii de specialitate din domeniul antreprenoriatului si administrarii afacerilor, fiind utila atat studentilor cat si cadrelor didactice. Fiind constienti ca prima editie a lucrarii poate fi imbunatatita, autorii asteapta sugestii si comentarii din partea publicului vizat.

El presente Breviario es, entre otros muchos trabajos, producto de años de investigación sobre este tema y comienza con el concepto mismo de lo que es el fondo de estabilización monetario tripartito en los años treinta; pasa revista al Acuerdo de Bretton Woods construido a partir de la preocupación del Tesoro estadounidense sobre la inestabilidad financiera que acompañó la Gran Depresión. Recorre la importancia que tuvo para el Tesoro cuando la Pax american triunfó en 1944 y la decisión del presidente Nixon de cancelar las bases de dicho acuerdo, de forma inconsulta con el FMI en 1971. Terminada la Pax america, se repasa el modo en cómo se convirtió de un entre multilateral a una agencia norte-sur con dos diferentes reglas de juego y termina el libro con la creciente irrelevancia de la institución ante la crisis del 2007 en adelante, ya desprestigiada por sus shocks económicos y sus fracasadas intervenciones en Tailandia (1977) y Argentina (2001).

The topic of this article — the multilateral regime for FDI — lies within the domain of international business studies that focus on multinational enterprises and their political environment. The topic is of increasing importance for MNEs' strategies and operations. Because of its centrality in the international trade–investment–technology transfer system, the World Trade Organization (WTO) is the specific focus of this article, though there is also some discussion of regional and bilateral agreements because they interact and overlap with WTO agreements. The relevance of the WTO to business strategy is evident in a variety of ways — in existing agreements, in negotiations to revise those agreements, in disputes, and in the expansion of its membership.

Caro professor, este material aborda um assunto matemático sobre um tipo específico de número, denominado Números Irracionais, que são números que dimensionam medidas que não se pode medir com frações. Os números irracionais são importantes por compor a nossa compreensão numérica de forma mais completa, possibilitando um cálculo adequado aos padrões numéricos que a natureza e algumas situações nos proporcionam em meio às grandezas contínuas. Conforme Vasconcelos (2016), os irracionais são muito importantes no estudo da matemática, de maneira que sem a existência desses números, vários problemas não poderiam ser solucionados, os quais se apresentam em inúmeras situações, sendo este um dos motivos para que esse assunto esteja citado nos currículos do ensino básico. Embora os números irracionais sejam citados como assunto a se ensinar no Ensino Básico, existem muitos obstáculos que dificultam o aprendizado do assunto de Números irracionais, como a dificuldade de aprender seu conceito e suas propriedades em meio ao rigor do formalismo matemático deste assunto, além de muitos ouros fatores. Diante dessa problemática, percebe-se que este assunto necessita de um bom planejamento didático que auxilie a prática docente no ensino. Por isso, construímos este material, que apresenta uma Sequência Didática sobre o assunto de Números Irracionais, que outrora foi utilizada em uma dissertação de mestrado do autor Barros (2021), que tinha o objetivo de analisar a aprendizagem gerada pela aplicação dessa Sequência Didática sobre Números Irracionais em alunos do Ensino Médio. Os resultados dessa dissertação foram muito satisfatórios, por isso temos a pretensão de contribuir com a prática de ensino de docentes que abordem este assunto em sala de aula ou aula remota. O objetivo deste produto educacional foi apresentar uma Sequência Didática para o ensino de Números Irracionais. A construção deste produto levou em consideração documentos curriculares como PCN e BNCC, bem como um conjunto de questionamentos e potencialidades apresentadas por várias pesquisas nessa área.

This chapter lays out the basic argument of the book: the ascent of private ownership in China is largely due to the inability of the public sector to address two fundamental concerns for regime survival—employment and revenue. The chapter includes three sections. First, based on a review and synthesis of existing theories, it develops an eclectic perspective on institutional change. Second, it offers a critique of three views on the driving forces of privatization in the post-Mao era: the entrepreneurship thesis, the budget constraint thesis, and the FDI thesis. Third, it outlines a new explanation for the causal mechanisms at work. The focus of analysis centers on the behavior of political actors, with an emphasis on the importance of demographics and the state’s evolving fiscal system for understanding how and why political actors have turned from the stewards of public enterprises into a major contributing force to their destruction.

This chapter argues that maritime arbitration is still a viable concept for ship owners, charterers, shippers, or buyers of commodities despite issues such as rising arbitration costs; the non-applicability of the American Rule with regard to the payment of fees; and the absence of any right to appeal, evidentiary rules, or pre-hearing disclosures. It goes on to examine the advantages arbitration over litigation, and their peculiar weight and relevance in the shipping field, especially the opportunity to have one’s case decided by arbitrators with strong commercial knowledge and experience and who therefore understand the commercial context of the dispute they are being asked to resolve. The chapter illustrates this advantage by reference to a number of recent cases decided by arbitral tribunals in New York, emphasizing that it is mainly this expertise which gives arbitration the edge over the courts.

Visando uma melhor organização, os capítulos estão agrupados nas seções: Ciência Onshore e Ciência Offshore. A seção de Ciência Onshore é composta por cinco capítulos. Pelo primeiro capítulo é avaliada a resistência e a rigidez de diafragmas horizontais, construídos em Sistemas Leves de Madeira. Foram ensaiados protótipos em escala real com diferentes arranjos construtivos concluindo-se que o emprego de dispositivos enrijecedores permite o aumento da resistência e rigidez dos diafragmas. O segundo capítulo aborda construções em madeira sob a ótica de sistemas com estruturas leves, apresentando análise computacional através de modelagem pelo método de elementos finitos. As análises demonstraram que a flecha real e a calculada para as vigas individuais, que compõem o diafragma de piso, apresentam reduções que variam de 18 a 30% quando comparadas com valores calculados para vigas isoladas. No contexto dos sistemas construtivo e estrutural da Construção Civil, observa-se uma inevitável e progressiva tendência de substituição dos sistemas convencionais por sistemas industrializados. Por meio do terceiro capítulo é apresentada uma revisão bibliográfica sobre conceitos de construção industrializada, abordando o atual cenário técnico no Brasil, e confrontando algumas das principais tecnologias industrializadas presentes hoje no segmento da Construção Civil. O quarto capítulo trata da engenharia aplicada ao ambiente offshore e apresenta uma análise de fadiga estrutural de conexões entre um reforçador longitudinal do costado e uma antepara transversal de uma unidade flutuante de produção, armazenamento e transferência (FPSO) convertida a partir de um navio petroleiro, sendo possível estimar a vida remanescente do FPSO. Por meio do capítulo cinco são apresentados detalhes de um reforço estrutural utilizando polímero reforçado com fibra de carbono (PRFC) em uma plataforma offshore de concreto armado. Apesar de adotada uma técnica consolidada, pouco se sabe sobre o desempenho do reforço ao longo do tempo quando exposto ao ambiente marinho. Pelo capítulo é apresentado um panorama geral da estrutura após 17 anos da execução do reforço que comprovou o bom desempenho da técnica empregada. A seção de Ciência Offshore é composta por quatro capítulos. Pelo capítulo seis é abordada a utilização de sistemas solares fotovoltaicos conectados à rede (SFVCR), enquanto apresenta uma proposta de metodologia para avaliar o potencial fotovoltaico para a Região Metropolitana de Curitiba. Foi realizado ainda, um levantamento do montante de gases de efeito estufa que são deixados de emitir. O capítulo contribui para a implantação de políticas públicas de incentivo para esta fonte energética. Geopolímeros são materiais alternativos ao cimento Portland, apresentando alta resistência mecânica e durabilidade química e térmica. Pelo capítulo sete são avaliadas as propriedades mecânicas de argamassas geopoliméricas contendo adição de Nanotubos de Carbono (NTC) assim como o método de incorporação do nanocompósito a argamassa. Os resultados mostram que os NTC quando bem distribuídos na matriz promovem um aumento de resistência à compressão e flexão das amostras. O capítulo oito trata do fetch, importante elemento na quantificação de fenômenos gerados pelo vento em reservatórios de Usinas Hidrelétricas. A abordagem apresentada amplia a compreensão do fetch através de um conceito bidimensional via processamento computacional, permitindo a geração de mapas e a determinação segura dos valores máximos para cada direção e a localização dos maiores comprimentos para o reservatório de Tucuruí, este importante reservatório no Brasil. Na quantificação dos fenômenos hidrodinâmicos em lagos e reservatórios é frequente a necessidade de conhecer o alcance das perturbações alcançadas pelas ondas ao se propagarem. Este fenômeno está relacionado à ressuspensão de sedimentos, desestratificação térmica, e erosão das margens, afetando o ecossistema aquático, as cadeias produtivas aquícolas e a vida útil de componentes mecânicos das UHE’s. Por meio do capítulo nono é apresentado o conceito de profundidade de mistura aplicado ao reservatório da hidrelétrica de Lajeado, Tocantins. É realizado o mapeamento das profundidades máximas perturbadas pelas ondas de vento ao se propagarem, contribuindo para uma melhor compreensão da estratificação térmica e da ressuspensão de sedimentos no reservatório desta importante usina hidrelétrica.

Abstract:

The concept of compassion applies to a number of situations and deserves to play a major role in health care. Within this chapter, we discuss the importance of compassionate care within both the hospital and primary healthcare settings, with a view to identifying ways of improving quality of care. We then discuss the importance of addressing compassion and health with regard to specific societal conditions such as during times of austerity, and towards vulnerable individuals such as the homeless who might experience specific health and social needs. Finally, we address factors that may hinder or promote compassion, before considering how compassion can be sustained in the longer term, and the extent to which the concept may be effectively incorporated in teaching and training programs.

Abstract:

A compreensão sobre diabetes e como os cuidados devem ser planejados, desafia o cotidiano dos profissionais da saúde à melhor conduta para garantia da qualidade de vida. Nesse campo, entende-se que o processo de educação continuada e permanente tanto aos trabalhadores da saúde, como aos pacientes/usuários; é requerida. O planejamento do processo de cuidado agrega o diálogo entre os profissionais e pacientes/usuários, a partir da definição e da pactuação conjunta. Naturalmente, somam-se medidas farmacológicas e não farmacológicas, pensadas cuidadosamente, etapa por etapa, fortemente dialogadas e sustentadas por referencial científico sobre o tema. Esse é um aspecto que não pode ser perdido de vista, já que as construções são validadas diante da ciência, do que tem peso qualitativo e evidência com desfecho conclusivo. Nesse sentido, entende-se que a garantia do bem-estar e da qualidade ao viver, perpassam a participação de atores e atrizes que colaboram ao cotidiano do paciente/usuário com diagnóstico de diabetes. No contexto da atuação desses atores e atrizes, está o conceito de interprofissionalidade em saúde, emergindo de forma positiva à melhoria dos serviços e ao modelo de prática com o cuidado centrado ao paciente/usuário, família e sociedade; em que a comunicação e o construir entre, com e junto são habilidades e competências necessárias à formação. A educação em saúde é considerada uma conduta importante à prevenção e à promoção da saúde, sinalizada como medida não farmacológica aos pacientes/usuários com diabetes. A disponibilidade de compreender o estabelecido em um processo de cuidado, exige do profissional da saúde o conhecimento prático projetado à habilidade de comunicação com linguagem acessível e clara. Soma-se a abertura para a compreensão mútua, a partir de vínculo estabelecido entre profissional e paciente/usuário. Vale considerar que em muitas situações, o plano de cuidado pactuado será concretizado com o/a cuidador/a. Nesse sentido, agregase o empenho ao entendimento fidedigno do plano de cuidado; igualmente necessário ao próprio paciente/usuário. Muitas vezes, situações que parecem simples aos olhos de um profissional da saúde, são complexas na compreensão do paciente/usuário e cuidador; ou são interpretadas de maneira diferente da que foi exposta. Por essa razão, ao final de um diálogo com caráter educativo e para J J J J orientação, faz-se necessário o pedido para que o paciente/usuário ou seu cuidador, repita o que foi orientado; para que tenhamos a efetiva pactuação do processo de cuidado e da adoção de medidas ao cotidiano. O profissional farmacêutico é considerado essencial à execução do plano de cuidado, uma vez que a partir do histórico sobre as necessidades em saúde, realiza uma avaliação e elabora um plano de cuidado de maneira individualizada; acompanhada do seguimento farmacoterapêutico. Embora no Brasil as modificações na formação farmacêutica sejam recentes à garantia de competências ao processo de cuidado, esforços são movidos para a educação continuada e atualizada. Nesse cenário, tem-se a prática do cuidado farmacêutico, apontada no cerne da relação farmacêutico-paciente, para alavancar o diferencial gerado ao dia a dia do paciente. Por essa razão, propomos com esse livro uma reflexão sobre uma proposta de cuidado farmacêutico ao paciente com diabetes tipo 1, para agregar ao profissional farmacêutico a necessidade de práticas planejadas e aplicáveis. Esperase que a leitura seja agradável e clara para somar à adesão de condutas profissionais no contexto do cuidado farmacêutico ao paciente/usuário com diabetes tipo 1.

Abstract:

This chapter stresses the importance of trying to understand the political communication process in the round (i.e., its shape), in addition to its specific workings and effects, and explains what this can involve. For this purpose, the concept of a “political communication system” is proposed, the key components of which are identified. Four ways in which this concept has been applied in analysis and research are then outlined (including especially for comparative research). Finally, the chapter considers whether the concept of a political communication system can be accommodated to the onset of recent transforming trends, such as increased communication abundance and the Internet.
