Laureno, Robert. Learning Neurology. Edited by Robert Laureno. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190607166.003.0015.

Abstract:
This chapter on “Learning Neurology” examines methods of visual display as an effective way of enhancing learning, and it discusses teaching approaches to help others learn neurology. In learning neurology, memorizing “normal” anatomy is initially helpful, but the advanced learner or practicing neurologist must be always aware of and sensitive to the normal variations that occur in neurological anatomy. In teaching, one cannot anticipate which statements will hit home with a student; one can only hope that something one utters will affect the student’s future thinking or put him on a path of study. Repetition is the fundamental pedagogical principle, and the neurologic educator must remember its importance.

‘Learning language’ considers how babies and toddlers develop language skills by looking at the role of Parentese, otherwise known as infant-directed speech, the importance of sound cues, and the role of gestures. Babies’ brains seem to be primed to pick up language with immense speed. Why do babies appear to have a language learning growth ‘spurt’ at 18 months? How can we explain similiarities of language development across cultures? One reason that babies learn words with apparent ease is that they have conceptual expectations about what people are using certain words for.

Abstract:
The traditional view of insects, as driven primarily by instinct, has changed dramatically in the past few decades. It begins with a brief review of insects’ sophisticated cognition, defined as the neuronal processes concerned with the acquisition, retention, and use of information. Three illuminating examples that illustrate adaptive aspects of cognitive traits in the context of night vision, memory and antipredatory decisions are given. Most insects possess good individual learning abilities and learning is positively associated with insect fitness. While social learning has been instrumental in social insects’ lives, its prevalence and importance in other insect taxa is still unknown. The chapter concludes by highlighting promising topics for future investigation, including research on heritable variation in insect cognitive traits and its association with fitness, expertise development, social learning in non-social insects, and the role of emotion in guiding insect decisions.

Kittay, Eva Feder. Learning from My Daughter. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190844608.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Disability offers a significant challenge to long-held philosophical views of the nature of the good life, what offers meaning in our lives, the importance of care, and the centrality of reason, as well as questions of justice, dignity, and personhood. In Learning from My Daughter, the author claims that living with a daughter who has multiple and significant disabilities, including cognitive disabilities, has been utterly transformative for thinking about her training, career and research as a philosopher. Interweaving the personal voice with the philosophical, the book argues that cognitive disability should reorient us to what truly matters; raises the question of whether normalcy is necessary for a good life; considers the ethical questions regarding prenatal testing and what it implies for understanding disability, the family, and ethically informed bioethics; and discusses the importance of care and an ethic built on an adequate understanding of care as it ought to be—not simply in how it is—practiced. The end of the book takes on the controversial case of Ashley X and the ethics of growth attenuation. In Learning from My Daughter, the disabled person takes center stage, but so does the ethic that needs to guide care. An ethic of care—if properly understood, the author claims—can be an ethical theory that is most useful for fully integrating disabled people and allowing them to live lives that are joyful and fulfilling.

Little, Max A. Machine Learning for Signal Processing. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198714934.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Digital signal processing (DSP) is one of the ‘foundational’ engineering topics of the modern world, without which technologies such the mobile phone, television, CD and MP3 players, WiFi and radar, would not be possible. A relative newcomer by comparison, statistical machine learning is the theoretical backbone of exciting technologies such as automatic techniques for car registration plate recognition, speech recognition, stock market prediction, defect detection on assembly lines, robot guidance and autonomous car navigation. Statistical machine learning exploits the analogy between intelligent information processing in biological brains and sophisticated statistical modelling and inference. DSP and statistical machine learning are of such wide importance to the knowledge economy that both have undergone rapid changes and seen radical improvements in scope and applicability. Both make use of key topics in applied mathematics such as probability and statistics, algebra, calculus, graphs and networks. Intimate formal links between the two subjects exist and because of this many overlaps exist between the two subjects that can be exploited to produce new DSP tools of surprising utility, highly suited to the contemporary world of pervasive digital sensors and high-powered and yet cheap, computing hardware. This book gives a solid mathematical foundation to, and details the key concepts and algorithms in, this important topic.

Abstract:
Machine learning is exploding, both in research and for industrial applications. This book aims to be a brief introduction to this area given the importance of this topic in many disciplines, from sciences to engineering, and even for its broader impact on our society. This book tries to contribute with a style that keeps a balance between brevity of explanations, the rigor of mathematical arguments, and outlining principle ideas. At the same time, this book tries to give some comprehensive overview of a variety of methods to see their relation on specialization within this area. This includes some introduction to Bayesian approaches to modeling as well as deep learning. Writing small programs to apply machine learning techniques is made easy today by the availability of high-level programming systems. This book offers examples in Python with the machine learning libraries sklearn and Keras. The first four chapters concentrate largely on the practical side of applying machine learning techniques. The book then discusses more fundamental concepts and includes their formulation in a probabilistic context. This is followed by chapters on advanced models, that of recurrent neural networks and that of reinforcement learning. The book closes with a brief discussion on the impact of machine learning and AI on our society.

Abstract:
Recent advances in online education platforms have the potential to increase access and equity for deaf students. This chapter examines what we know about accessibility in online learning for deaf individuals. Online learning is broad in its reach, including instruction that parallels or is in addition to traditional face-to-face instruction. Discussions about the future of online learning are situated in a larger context of the importance of direct communication for deaf learners, the use of video platforms for dialog, and the role and function of media as a flexible, empowering, and constructed space for learning in multiple language modalities. Yet the capacity of online education to deliver on its potential requires careful attention to the way the education environment is designed. This chapter provides historical and conceptual context for accessibility; summarizes research on critical issues, including captioning, synchronous and asynchronous communication, and accommodations; and offers recommendations for further investigation.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 5 asks what Christians were supposed to learn from the stories about the Capitoline Hill’s special status in Roman memory as the inviolable citadel of Jupiter’s people. Christian intellectuals such as Tertullian, followed by Clement of Alexandria, Eusebius of Caesarea, Lactantius, and Arnobius, ridiculed Roman history and mythology. Jerome, Ambrose, Prudentius, Augustine, and others pursued the same agenda into the fourth and fifth centuries. For these apologists, the ways of knowing the Capitol could be flipped to suddenly make clear that the beloved traditions at the heart of the Capitol’s symbolic status could not stand up to scrutiny. Of particular importance to these men was the belief that Jupiter lived in his house on the Capitoline Hill and was especially interested in protecting the Roman people through the long history of their state, a series of arguments reanimated with significance in the years following the Gothic king Alaric’s occupation of Rome in 410.

Abstract:
The Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University (Berkeley) features an interreligious immersion program that offers students unique opportunities to study a religious tradition other than their own in local settings. The program focuses on the sacred teachings and historical developments of a tradition, along with comparative spiritual practices and experiences of religious communities. Recent destinations include India, Indonesia, the Middle East, and Nepal. Central to program goals is the conviction that the experience is formative. Students develop a deeper understanding of religious traditions, interreligious dialogue, and the importance of understanding the complex realities of these traditions in actual settings. All of these spheres of learning impact the students’ studies and ministry training.

Full text
Abstract:
With the growth of free improvisation as a field of study within academic institutions there is a need to investigate the fundamental musical and psychological processes that lie behind this creative form of social activity. This chapter presents interviews with eight expert free-improvising musicians. The interviews focused on how the participants developed their creative skills, and offer insights into their learning processes. Thematic analysis of the transcribed interviews highlights three main learning modes: autodidactism, mentoring and learning in a social context. These areas of learning influenced conceptual and practical approaches to performance, and participants emphasised the importance of mentoring and group learning as critical elements in their becoming improvising musicians. The experiences of the interviewees reveal the socially constructed nature of musical development and creativity, and the nature of the social environments in which learning can take place.

Gallagher, John. Learning Languages in Early Modern England. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198837909.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1578, the author, teacher, translator, and lexicographer John Florio wrote of English that it was ‘a language that wyl do you good in England, but passe Dover, it is woorth nothing’. Florio lived in an age when English was a marginal language on the international stage, and when language-learning was central to the English encounter with the wider world. This book is the first major study of how English-speakers learnt a variety of Continental vernaculars. Moving from language lessons in early modern London to the texts, practices, and ideas that underlay vernacular language education in the sixteenth and seventeenth century, and offering a new and multilingual understanding of early modern travel practices, it explores how early modern people learnt and used foreign languages, and asks what it meant to be competent in another language in this period. Multilingualism was a fact of life in early modern Europe: it animated and shaped travel, commerce, culture, diplomacy, education, warfare, and cultural encounter. This book offers a new and methodologically innovative study of a set of practices that were crucial to England’s encounter with the wider world, and to the fashioning of English linguistic and cultural identities at home. It argues for the importance of a historicized understanding of linguistic competence, and frames new ways of thinking about language, communication, and identity in a polyglot age.

Full text
Abstract:
Drawing on the country-level analyses this chapter brings out broader conclusions and lessons for how, in future, children can be better protected from bearing the brunt of major crises. This is not a straightforward exercise, because the impact of the crisis and recession on children has been very different across them for a variety of reasons. The macroeconomic ‘shock’ itself and the starting positions differed greatly across countries while the responses by governments covered a very wide range of policy levers and varied with their circumstances. It is clear however that cuts in social spending and tax increases often played a major role in the impact of the crisis on the living standards of families and children. The country experiences analysed in this book bring out the importance of building coherent ‘social fabrics’ both to address child poverty effectively and to protect children against the worst effects of future crises.

Abstract:
Black South African choral music has a rich and complex history rooted in the cultures and communities that first gave voice to it, in modern times contributing to the anti-apartheid struggle and the fight against AIDS. In striving to perform this world music authentically, Western choirs can introduce a sense of solidarity with and understanding of South African people, whose music is often oversimplified and westernized in published arrangements and transcriptions. This chapter provides an overview of techniques and resources directors can use in teaching this repertoire to choirs. Focus on authenticity; the importance of fully understanding the text; dancing; learning the music orally; teaching the cultural, social, political, and religious contexts of each piece; and maintaining high performance expectations. Developing an understanding of this genre encourages interest in the cultures that created it, opening the minds of all who encounter this powerful music.

Huss, Oksana, and Oleksandra Keudel. Open budget: Learning from the Open School Platform in Donetsk oblast, Ukraine. Bononia University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30682/oblospd01.

Full text
Abstract:
The case study developed as part of IIEP‐UNESCO Research Project ‘Open Government: Learning From Experience’ analyses how an open government approach is being applied in Ukraine to resolve the critical issue of non‐transparent school financing through parents’ donations that undermines trust among key educational stakeholders. Developed in 2016, the Open School Platform (OS) is an online tool that allows parents to visualise the school’s budget, needs and expenditures in an easy‐ to‐read format. The study shows that OS has contributed to: improved trust among key stakeholders, improved communication and collaboration between school personnel and local public authorities, and more effective planning. But it also confirms that the use of ICT can lead to inequalities in poor rural communities having low levels of Internet access or computer literacy. It concludes on the importance of open government for shifting to a new paradigm of cooperation and partnership. And it recommends providing access to information in line with the Open Data Charter; ensuring a legal framework for citizen participation; using handy and accessible technological solutions; and following a ‘learning‐by‐doing’ approach to build up social capital for constructive interaction with authorities.

Full text
Abstract:
This book deals with the issue of the quality of education systems by examining the key factors that influence learning outcomes, and by highlighting in a systemic way the determinants of this quality. I have shown the importance of considering the quality of learning outcomes as the ultimate and unavoidable objective of any education system that aims to be efficient and effective. I reviewed the theoretical bases that concern the politics, approaches and mechanisms of quality management applied to education. I developed a model called Elmandjra, which tries to explain the influence links that can exist between the inputs, the processes and the outputs of an education system, and how they must function to improve the quality of the learning outcomes. To answer the problem of the book, I compared the proposed model to the reality of the Moroccan educational system based on a research methodology that combines discussion within a focus group, and analysis of statistical data and results of international surveys concerning the Moroccan education system. The results of the work made it possible to establish a model for the quality of education systems comprising nine criteria. They also generated 52 indicators which use will enable other researchers to apply the model to the institutional assessment of education systems. I ended my book by presenting the conclusions on the state of the Moroccan education system that the exploitation of the Elmandjra model made it possible to draw, as well as by recommendations to improve the quality of the Moroccan education system, which other countries can to be inspired to improve theirs.
