Abstract:
Material culture in Victorian working-class homes acted as a medium through which messages about the importance of industry, diligence, and obedience could be emphasized to children. This chapter will review the ways in which material culture scholars have approached the subject of child labour in different areas of the Victorian world, as well as elucidating the differences and similarities in children’s experiences of work in different parts of the western world during the nineteenth century. It will consider decorative motifs on mass-produced domestic material culture, the role of toys as objects for training children, and work-related artefacts with which children may have interacted, but which do not bear obvious characteristics suggesting that they were specifically made for children. Labour will be addressed in its broadest sense, including gendered differences in the material culture of labour and the broader historical driving forces behind the existence of work-related material ‘propaganda’.

Full text
Abstract:
"This book is an approach to the sphere of the body from different disciplinary perspectives. For this, a dialogue is necessary, not to unify the concept, but to have the possibility of meeting and moving around different fields of knowledge. This to give meaning to what has been done over time and structure a system of consensus, dissent, and networks in a discourse-practice that has been marginal in the local space. In this encounter, it can be observed that there is no attribute of the body that allows us to speak of it as a whole nor a nature that informs us of a purpose. The body is constructed and this construction refers to a use, a need, and an experience. But on many occasions, its construction has been left aside in some areas of training, without giving it the importance it deserves. I invite the readers to delight in this new wave, in which we can see views from perspectives such as sport, health, disability, education, and art. Winding, undulating movements that have been based on academic reflections, projects, and research by friends and colleagues who have joined these dialogues today and seek to unravel and decant the mysteries of the body, how they perceive it, assume it and it is constitutive of the subject."

Abstract:
Diversity training is an important and widely used component of organizational diversity management initiatives. This chapter reviews theory and research on diversity training design, delivery, evaluation, and effectiveness. The review suggests that in the past 10 to 15 years of research, advancements have been made on several fronts. The research literature on diversity training includes frameworks for pretraining needs assessment, learning models to guide diversity training design choices, and empirical evidence of diversity training’s impact on training outcomes. However, the review also notes two major shortcomings. First, research has emphasized diversity training’s effect on short-term changes in trainees’ knowledge and attitudes, neglecting longer-term changes in their skills and behavior. Second, research has emphasized diversity training’s effect on individual-level learning outcomes, neglecting its impact on team- and organization-level outcomes. These shortcomings are unlikely to be addressed unless scholars and practitioners engage in more collaborative field-based research on diversity training.

Full text
Abstract:
Facilitating small group role play is an integral component in effective communication skills training (CST) for healthcare professionals, and requires its own training and review in order to provide replicable high-quality CST. This chapter outlines the structure and critical elements of facilitator-led role play sessions. Elements include the importance of structuring the role play; recognizing the importance of established learning goals as expressed by each learner; navigating and directing the simulated patient (SP) to partake in a realistic clinical encounter relevant to the learner; managing an effective role play session with learner and SP; and providing meaningful feedback both directly to the learner, as well as overseeing balanced group feedback provided by observing peers in the small group. This chapter also provides helpful processes in training new and sustaining competent facilitators, keeping in mind available resources for training. Finally, this chapter points to necessary areas for continued development in facilitation.

Full text
Abstract:
The physiological adaptations to exercise training have been evaluated extensively in children and youth. In particular, considerable research has examined the changes in cardiovascular function that occur with aerobic exercise training. Various indicators of cardiovascular function have been assessed at rest and during exercise. Many of these measures have important implications from performance and health-related perspectives. Owing to the importance of oxygen (O2) transport for human performance and health, this chapter reviews comprehensively the varied non-invasive and invasive methods of assessing cardiac function including an in-depth evaluation of the limitations and strengths of each methodology. Specific reference is given to the applicability and ease of usage of each technology with young people. This chapter also deals extensively with the evaluation of cardiovascular regulation and vascular function owing to their role in optimal exercise performance and health.

Abstract:
Anaesthesia education is uniquely placed to allow safe and supervised workplace teaching and training delivered in a personalized, contextual one-to-one basis. Trainers and trainees need to manage their expectations in training, enabling flexible and opportunistic capturing of these learning episodes, as well as structured learning. Structured planning of individualized training is imperative to facilitate learning in trainees with different learning styles. Role modelling of trainers in the workplace is an essential component of both clinical and professional teaching. Critical reflection and high-quality trainee feedback enhances this experiential learning. A robust framework of education governance is fundamental in maintaining a high standard of training; this includes trainer accreditation, recognizing the importance of trainer development, and an appropriate infrastructure to support training and education in the clinical workplace.

Abstract:
As sources of legitimation for the assignment of social status, education and training systems are more strongly rooted in particular national traditions than other social institutions. Most typologies of national skill systems focus on the differences in general and vocational education in upper secondary school. However, with increasing investment in preschool education, the expansion of university education and the growing importance of education and training for adults, comparative researchers are paying increasing attention to the education and training system as a whole, with the result that country typologies are necessarily becoming more complex. The chapter shows that we must bid farewell to the myth that the sole objective of education and training reforms is to increase economic efficiency. In modern democracies, reforms of education and training systems are often characterised by conflicts between the protection of status, on the one hand, and increasing equality, on the other.

Abstract:
The visible curriculum is a term for engagement with the visual arts in medical education. The purposes of having medical trainees view and respond to artworks have been framed in various ways: to sharpen technical abilities, to foster cognitive and interpersonal skills, and to promote personal growth. Art-making, as an embodied practice, activates skills essential to medical care which go beyond words and beyond cognitive work. This chapter summarizes current visual teaching/learning modalities used in medical training, considers the importance of art-making in addition to art observation, suggests differences in approach between undergraduate and residency training, and offers some practical examples of visual arts-based sessions for training and reflection.

This chapter reviews the importance of delivering community-based systems and EBIs with fidelity (i.e., in accordance with their implementation requirements) and sustaining these interventions over time. The chapter describes the training and technical support provided in CTC to ensure that coalitions take necessary actions to maintain their functioning in the long term and deliver EBIs in adherence to their core components and to their intended recipients. It is especially important that coalitions collect data on coalition functioning and EBI delivery and use these data when problems are identified. Examples of how CTC coalitions in the United States and other countries have engaged in these efforts are highlighted.
