Abstract:
This chapter studies the effects of wages on health. A 2018 health policy brief in Health Affairs highlights fluctuations in wages and how population health reflects these changes. In the brief, the authors emphasize that the labor market does not strictly follow basic economic assumptions. In particular, an increase in wages may not reduce quantity or quality of work, as an economist critiquing minimum wage hikes might expect. Instead, the study’s authors argue that increased wages can improve productivity by boosting morale. Wages between 1979 and 2013 rose notably only for those with very high pay; people in the middle wage group have not seen much of an increase in pay over the years. Meanwhile, those with very low wages have almost exclusively seen drops in their pay over the decades. The study authors then explain how increases in the minimum wage can positively impact health, citing prior research on the connections to lower smoking, fewer missed work days, and improved birthweight. With many states looking to raise their minimum wages, the authors recommend that those still caught in the debate should approach the decision from both a health and economic perspective.

Abstract:
This chapter explains why policies that encourage union membership and promote broad-based bargaining would enable labor to deliver much more for workers and the economy than they can under the current system. The chapter discusses why labor has been in decline in the United States and elsewhere but has been able to maintain strength in a few other countries with favorable policies. Policies that actively encourage union membership are needed to counteract the collective action problem unions present. The chapter also discusses why collective bargaining currently does not work very well in the United States but could be much improved by shifting toward broader-based bargaining. Compared to worksite bargaining, broad-based bargaining raises wages for more workers, reduces economic inequality as well as gender and racial pay gaps to a greater degree, and is better suited to the way firms are structured in the modern economy.

Abstract:
With the rapid development of the science and technology era, digital technology has been widely used in power grid infrastructure projects, and intelligent equipment, high-precision sensing technology, and wireless ad hoc network equipment have been used in various fields of power grid infrastructure. Nowadays, the pay-off construction of overhead transmission lines has also realized intelligent visualization of centralized control, which has improved the safety of stringing construction. Overhead tension pay-off is a key infrastructure construction project, and for the safety of overhead tension pay-off, there are major breakthroughs in reducing labor costs, improving the automation degree of tension pay-off, and improving the working environment, which effectively improves safety construction efficiency. In this paper, the long-term and short-term memory network model using deep learning is used to model and quantitatively analyze the overhead tension pay-off, predict its future security risks, take timely measures, and adjust the operation strategy according to the prediction results of the model.

Abstract:
Economic security in the coalfields was strengthened after the closure of Scotland’s largest colliery, Michael in East Fife, in 1967. The moral economy was enforced vigorously by the New Mine generation. Mobilisation averted a significant erosion of employment. Increased coal burn at new power stations was secured. As the creation of jobs in new industries slowed, so did the rate of employment loss in coal. Pits closed only where the interests of mining localities were carefully protected. Security was also pursued through industrial action for improved wages. The New Mine generation in Scotland was instrumental in shifting union politics to the left, and Scottish miners were prominent in major unofficial strikes in 1969 and 1970. Miners across Britain won significant pay increases in 1972 and 1974. These struggles reflected ambitions for more trenchant resistance to deindustrialisation, but the trend to unity across the coalfields was countered by the NCB’s introduction of area incentive schemes. The prominence of territorial divisions reinforced the Scottish labour movement’s argument that deindustrialisation and economic security were phenomena with distinct national features in Scotland.

Abstract Black self-governance was present in Seville but absent in Lima. In Seville, the alcalde de los negros likely functioned as a kind of ombudsman or mayordomo of a confraternity, resolving small disputes and organizing festival behavior. In the New World, such an office was abandoned on a general level, particularly as Atlantic slavery grew exponentially in the seventeenth century. But Spanish leaders did embrace the Black republic in certain forms: to force free Black men and women to work in mining, or to entice cimarrones (runaway slaves) to form free towns, pay tribute, and police future runaways. In Lima, Black confraternities became voluntary spaces of limited self-governance and mutual aid. But Lima’s authorities often regretted the lack of Black leaders with incentives to extract wealth and labor from the city’s large Black population.

Abstract:
Strengthening the production and processing of key food commodities forms the basis of agricultural development in Africa. These value chains follow a quasi-linear progression across seven main segments: farm planning > land preparation and crop establishment > field production > harvest > post-harvest handling > marketing > and value addition. Each of these consists of sub-segments whose improvement depends upon promotion and adoption of specific modernizing technologies. The technologies either have commercial application, as with the distribution of production input products and labor-saving equipment, or are related to management of farms and processing. For crop commodities, these products include improved varieties planted with more and better-formulated fertilizers and pest management materials. Management options are primarily directed toward the better conservation of resources and wiser integration of different farm enterprises. Key factors underlying value chain advancement include wider application of digital services, more effective incentives for climate-smart action, increased mechanization and irrigation, improved marketing efficiency and fairness, and incentives for value-creating agro-processing. An analogous set of factors also relate to value chains supporting animal enterprise. Attracting women and youth to meaningful careers in agriculture is particularly important since they are major stakeholders in the scaling of much-needed technologies and business models.

Abstract:
Enterprise Architecture (EA) can be thought of as a powerful tool to transform electricity (distribution) utilities into more service-oriented and also economically viable enterprises, if not sustainable enterprises (spanning the so-called triple-bottom-line, viz., profits, people, planet). Developing regions (such as India) face even greater challenges than global concerns about electricity. Developing regions’ utilities are often loss making and have numerous operational challenges (including high theft and a weak/unstable grid). They also face a populace with limited means to pay (putting pressures on pricing) but also a large swath of potential consumers whom they have not yet reached. The rise of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) offers the ability to know what (and how much) is going where, with high time and geographic precision, covering not merely flows of electricity but also money, information, control, manpower, etc. More than converting data into information, it can lead to improved decision-making (“knowledge” and “wisdom”). Ultimately, harnessing ICT not only speeds up processes, but also transforms the enterprise. The widest-reaching form of EA transformation has been called a Smart Grid, an ongoing transformation of utilities worldwide. EA done right is complex, but so is electricity distribution. Instead of hiding or ignoring complexities, EA internalizes them into the decision-making process. While decision-makers cannot ignore issues of political economy, an Enterprise Architecture lens focuses on incentives, operations, and planning important for all enterprises independent of public versus private ownership.

Abstract:
Rapidly increasing, global competition has led many companies to pay more attention to each singular requirement of their customers and, therefore, caused the tendency to small batch sizes and a greater variety of products. Assembly workload and human labor is the prime expense factor during the assembly of products. Here the hours of work by workmen multiplied with a company-specific factor equal the occurring costs. Based on the frequent use of variant-oriented product modelling, the efficiency of preparation processes has been improved. However, the assembly planning of single productions or short runs is often based on experience or the method of compare and estimate. Most production planning systems used in practice have an essential weakness in that they do not support hierarchical planning based on assembly constraints and do not observe resource constraints at all production levels. Therefore, tight synchronisation between design and production structures is necessary in early stage of the preparation and planning process in parallel to the design process. In this paper a project is presented, in which the assembly planning is put into practice based on engineering 3D CAD models in 3D PDF and a preplanned library of work steps. Through connected time values multiplied by frequency and under consideration of assembly difficulties, transparent assembly basetimes can be calculated and expectable costs can be estimated. Though connected resources the needed tooluse per workstation can be determined. Furthermore a connection of product, assembly process and resource is implicitly created by the planning process itself, which machine-readable will provide a lot of potential for future automatisms.
