Hu, Yin. "Improving the Efficiency of Homomorphic Encryption Schemes." Digital WPI, 2013. https://digitalcommons.wpi.edu/etd-dissertations/171.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, we explore different approaches to practical homomorphic encryption schemes. For partial homomorphic encryption schemes, we observe that the versatility is the main bottleneck. To solve this problem, we propose general approaches to improve versatility of them by either extending the range of supported circuits or extending the message space. These general approaches can be applied to a wide range of partial HE schemes and greatly increase the number of applications that they support. For fully homomorphic encryption schemes, the slow running speed and the large ciphertex

Marx, Nigel. "Improving engine efficiency via polymer shear thinning." Thesis, Imperial College London, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/45361.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the extent to which viscosity modifier additive shear thinning can be used to reduce hydrodynamic friction and thus improve engine efficiency while not impacting too greatly on hydrodynamic film thickness. Novel experimental techniques are developed to measure shear-dependent viscosity over a large shear rate range. A model hydrodynamic lubricated contact is established using a steel ball rolling/sliding against a polymer disc. This enables low contact pressures, thus avoiding significant piezoviscous effects. Novel methods are developed to measure film thickness and f

Johansson, Staffan Andreas. "Improving photosynthetic conversion efficiency in marine microalgae." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2016. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/400390/.

Full text
Abstract:
Marine photosynthetic microalgae have great potential in biotechnology. They have huge genetic diversity and naturally make an array of metabolites that are precursors in high value products such as fuels and pharmaceuticals. They do not compete with agriculture for land or fresh water and can be used to reduce industrial carbon-emissions. In order to realize this potential however much work needs to be done to overcome the engineering challenges of growing microalgae on large scales and developing the genetic tools required to increase the yield and diversity of products synthesized by cells.

McGill, Tyler R. "Improving the Efficiency of Dairy Cattle Feeding." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/79951.

Abstract:
Biological functions that use amino acids (AA) are limited by AA supply. This concept was likened to staves in a barrel, where the shortest stave determines the barrel's ability to hold water (Mitchell and Block, 1946). Inaccuracies in models that predict nutrient supply and requirements of dairy cows result in inefficient feeding, as under-prediction of requirements results in deficiency, and over-prediction results in excess. To avoid limitations in production due to AA deficiencies, protein is fed in quantities that likely exceed requirements. Overfeeding of AA results in increased expenses

Abstract:
Resource degradation is a significant problem in the world, which is directly related to the textile and fashion industry. Efficient use of the material has been identified as an essential aspect to be addressed seriously. It is a critical topic that has attracted the attention of people and companies in recent years and has become a fundamental issue of sustainability. This research study was based on UN sustainable development goals number 12 and 8, which focuses on resource efficiency. The research is designed in considering fabric consumption, which has a significant impact on the textile

Connon, Catherine Cupples. "Improving Processing Efficiency for Forensic DNA Samples." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2015. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc799515/.

Full text
Abstract:
The goal of this project was to reduce processing time for forensic DNA testing without incurring significant added costs and/or the need for new instrumentation, while still generating high quality profiles. This was accomplished by: 1) extraction normalization using the ChargeSwitch® Forensic DNA Purification Kit such that a small range of DNA concentrations was consistently obtained, eliminating the need for sample quantification and dilution; 2) developing fast PCR protocols for STR primer sets using shorter amplification methods, low volume reactions and non-fast thermal cyclers; and 3) d
