External economic shocks cause domestic macroeconomic aggregates to fluctuate. This may call for a macroeconomic policy intervention. Since the early 1990s an increasing number of countries have adopted an inflation targeting framework. In reality, inflation targeters do not have perfect information when determining the interest rate in order to maintain their goal of price stability and stable economic growth. Therefore it is relevant to understand how shocks affect the domestic macroeconomic aggregates theoretically and investigate whether the theoretical predictions hold empirically. I use

Abstract:
Sloshing in the tank of liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers has recently attracted immense attention due to the rise in demand for LNG transportation. It occurs in partially filled tanks and is capable of inflicting severe damage to the tank’s interior. One effective method to dampen sloshing activities is by introducing baffles into the tank. In this paper, the nature of sloshing has been investigated using finite volume based unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) method. Good correlation was achieved between the results obtained from the presented computations and past studies, d

The problem of gear noise in vehicles has been intensively studied in the past; however, recently the interest about this problem grew because of great restrictions in the laws regarding noise level and the increase of international competition. One of the most important vibration and noise sources is transmission error that excites the gearbox as a dynamic system, the gearbox surfaces, and connected components; the external box radiates noise. However, the current understanding of gear vibration remains incomplete, even though there is general agreement about the nature of the phenomenon. Vib

The command inputs selected for system identification (SYSID) are dictated by numerous factors, some of which include: 1) The frequency range of interest; 2) The capability of the system to sustain the inputs; 3) The capability of the system to remain 'agnostic' to future inputs. When the elements comprising, the system being identified are all electro-mechanical, frequency sweeps, sum-of-sines, and impulsive inputs are standard identification techniques. However, when human manual control becomes an element of the system, the second and third factors are key considerations. Sum-of-sines (SOS)

Impact plays an important role in robotic manipulations. As robotic manipulators interact with their environment or objects, the motion of the system varies discontinuously and large impulsive forces are created at the surface of contact and are transmitted through the system, particularly when the motion of the manipulator is fast. With the demands for more precise and faster performance of robotic manipulators and minimizing potential damage of the system, being able to better simulate and control impact has become essential. Direct DC to RF conversion with an optoelectronically switchable frozen-wave generator has recently been demonstrated.(1,2) Using picosecond optical pulses. A sequential waveform consisting of two and one half cycles has been obtained with a voltage conversion efficiency better than 90%.(2) However, there are some drawbacks associated with the frozen-wave generator device. One of them is that a large number of switches must be simultaneously activated and each switch must operate at close to 100% efficiency in order to form a good pulse sequence. These requirements are rather difficult to meet

Abstract:
In this paper, we present a straightforward structural model of the oil market designed to disentangle demand and supply shocks. This model is regularly employed and updated in the Banco de España to enhance the understanding of oil market dynamics. Building on the work of Kilian and Murphy (2014), we introduce a novel business cycle measure based on the co-movement of real commodity prices to capture global demand shocks, and also include an oil-specific demand shock. Our impulse response functions and historical decomposition align with previous studies and effectively capture significant hi

This paper investigates the international spillovers of housing demand shocks on real economic activity. The global economy is modeled using a Global VAR, with a novel house price data set for both advanced and emerging economies. The impulse responses to an identified US housing demand shock confirm the existence of strong international spillovers to advanced economies. In contrast, the response of some major emerging economies is not significantly different from zero. The paper also shows that synchronized housing demand shocks in advanced economies reinforce each other and have a deep and l

We present a systematic investigation of computational approaches to the modeling of granular materials. Granular materials are ubiquitous in everyday life and in a variety of engineering and industrial applications. Despite the apparent simplicity of the laws governing particle-scale interactions, predicting the continuum mechanical response of granular materials still poses extraordinary challenges. This is largely due to the complex history dependence resulting from continuous rearrangement of the microstructure of granular material, as well as the mechanical interlocking due to grain morph
