Abstract:

I wish to begin by paying tribute to the figure of cImad al-Din Yahya Ibn Hamz, the renowned Zaidi scholar and Imam (669-750AH). He greatly enriched the canon of Islamic studies with his output, in particular with his major work on Arabic grammar entitled al-Hasir li Fawa' id al-Muqaddima li Tahir, which constitutes the subject of this thesis. Al-Hasir li Fawa'id al-Muqaddima li Tahir is, in effect, an extensive commentary on the short grammatical treatise of al-Muqaddima al-Muhsiba (or al-Muqaddima al-Nahwiyya) by the Egyptian grammarian Ibn Babshadh Tahir Ibn Ahmad al-Jauhari (d. 469AH). The commentary amounts to a detailed analysis of Ibn Babshadh's text providing an exhaustive and original treatment of most major aspects of Arabic grammar. I have divided the thesis into two parts. Part one, a study, consists of eight chapters. In the first chapter I discuss the Arabic manuscripts of al-Hasir, six copies of which I managed to obtain from various Islamic and Western institutions, as well as the method I followed in editing the text. In Chapter two I introduce the figure of the Imam Yahya, provide a short biography covering his childhood, education and his writing, and discuss his milieu from a political, social and cultural perspective including a comment on the origin of the Zaidi state in al-Yaman and the Rasulid dynasty there under which the Imam Yahya lived. In Chapter three I give a brief history of Arabic grammar and its development up to the time of al-Imam Yahya. In Chapter four I offer a short biography of Ibn Babshadh and his works, especially his principal work al-Muqaddima al-Muhsiba and its commentary Sharh al-Muqaddima al-Muhsiba the subject of Imam Yahya's revision under the title of al-Hasir, and cover also the major commentaries written on al-Muqaddima produced by the celebrated grammarian of the period under discussion. In Chapter five I discuss the Imam Yahya's orientation in Arabic grammar and his position with respect to the traditional grammatical school's (Basran, Kufan and Baghdadi). In Chapter six I discuss the subject and method in al-Hdsir. In Chapter seven I discuss the importance of the shawahid in Arabic grammar, as a source of the Imam Yahya's work in al-Hasir derived from the Qur'an, the Hadith, ancient Arabic poetry and prose, as well as shawahid by analogy. Chapter eight deals with the significance of al-Hasir as a work of Arabic grammar and presentation comparing with the work of al-Zamakhshari's al-Mufassal and the Shark al-Muqaddima al-Muhsiba by Ibn Babshadh. The second part of the thesis covers the Arabic edition of al-Hasir. It is based upon the oldest available manuscript and supplied with a full critical apparatus.

Abstract:

Esta dissertação trata de modelos para a estruturação de artigos científicos. Em seu corpo, apresentam-se respostas para as seguintes perguntas: Que modelos são esses?, Há modelos universais ou preponderantes para a composição de artigos científicos?, Existem modelos hegemônicos em áreas específicas do conhecimento?, Em que extensão artigos científicos em circulação correspondem a modelos apresentados em instruções aos autores de periódicos? e A uniformidade que emerge da adesão a um determinado padrão para a estruturação de artigos científicos manifesta-se no nível das seções de artigos?. As respostas dadas neste texto fundamentam-se em achados obtidos mediante: 1) a análise de instruções aos autores de revistas da Scientific Electronic Library Online do Brasil (SciELO Brasil) quanto à indicação de modelos para a estruturação de artigos científicos, 2) o estudo da correspondência entre a estrutura geral de uma amostra de artigos científicos publicados em Língua Portuguesa na SciELO Brasil e os modelos apresentados nas instruções aos autores das revistas que divulgam esses textos e 3) o exame dos componentes de introduções de artigos científicos que têm estrutura geral igual ao padrão Introdução-Métodos-Resultados-Discussão, ou a alguma variante sua, e que foram publicados em Português na SciELO Brasil. Além de respostas, de percursos e de achados de pesquisa, esta dissertação compreende a interpretação de resultados com a consideração de materiais que vão de livros e artigos sobre escrita científica a obras fundamentais de ramos específicos do saber. Ainda, compreende a interpretação de achados com o olhar voltado para o ensino de escrita científica.
This dissertation deals with models for structuring scientific articles. Answers to the following questions are presented in its body: What are these models? Are there universal or preponderant models for writing scientific articles? Do predominant models exist in particular fields of knowledge? To what extent do real scientific articles correspond to models presented in instructions to authors of journals? Does the uniformity that arises from the adoption of a specific pattern for structuring scientific articles manifest itself within article sections? The answers given in the present text are based on findings obtained by means of: 1) the analysis of instructions to authors of journals of the Scientific Electronic Library Online of Brazil (SciELO Brazil) concerning models for structuring scientific articles, 2) the study of the equivalence between the general structure of a sample of scientific articles published in Portuguese in SciELO Brazil and the models presented in the instructions to authors of the journals to which these texts belong, and 3) the examination of the components of introductions of scientific articles that have general structure identical to the Introduction-Methods-Results-And-Discussion pattern, or to some variant of it, and that were published in Portuguese in SciELO Brazil. In addition to answers, research paths and findings, this dissertation contains an interpretation of results that takes into account materials that range from books and articles on scientific writing to basic works of particular branches of knowledge. Also, it contains an interpretation of results that focuses on the teaching of scientific writing.

Abstract:

Green Relationship is a design solution attempting to raise awareness toward the environment and reduce consumerism. Waste generation and pollution have become major concerns of many governments, municipalities, organizations and individuals around the world since they are affecting human wellbeing and the environment. As an MFA student with VCUQatar, I chose to use design to contribute in protecting the environment hoping to make a difference in life. The thesis includes a research and a design component. The research explores the recycling programs and facilities in Qatar, the governmental and private sector actions toward waste generation and collection, as well as precedent solutions applied around the world. Furthermore, it includes a survey on recycling to gather and analyze the community’s feed back in order to come up with a solution that aims to change people’s behavior toward waste generation and to promote green lifestyle. The design component defines the Green Relationship as the personal connection between the individual and the silent partner, “the environment.” It fulfills the basic survival needs, “food and water,” and the one and only independency need, “oxygen.” The elements of the Green Relationship are the projection of the generic relationships elements we know of through the theory of “Humimicing” that I introduce in my thesis. Humimicing is the design theory that mimics human innate attributes and behaviors to develop design concepts to be applied in different industries. Every element of the Green Relationship is visualized through a different design discipline similar to its nature. Therefore, interactive, product and critical designs are the mediums used to represent Green Communication, Care and Ethics respectively through public installation, experimentation and conceptual design definition. The thesis methodology, which is “Make it Personal,” concludes in creating the Green Relationship that aims to change the behavior of individuals and ultimately to reach out to the wider community. Under the maxim, “Green is not just a color; it is a Lifestyle,” the thesis promotes the use of design to inspire people, designers and manufacturers to consume less and generate less waste in order to save natural resources and the environment.
