Abstract:
The suicide rate and the death rate for undetermined causes were negatively associated over time from 1968 to 1990 in the USA, suggesting that these undetermined deaths may include a fair proportion of suicides. In contrast, there was no association between suicide and undetermined death rates over the states in 1980.

Abstract:
Background: For diseases like Covid-19, where it has been difficult to identify the true number of infected people, or where the number of known cases is heavily influenced by the number of tests performed, hospitalizations and deaths play a significant role in understanding the epidemic and in determining the appropriate response. However, the Covid-19 deaths data reported by some countries display a significant weekly variability, which can make the interpretation and use of the death data in analysis and modeling difficult. Methods: We derive the mathematical relationship between the series of new daily deaths by reporting date and the series of deaths by death date. We then apply this formalism to the corresponding time-series reported by Sweden during the Covid-19 pandemic. Results: The practice of reporting new deaths daily, as is standard procedure during an outbreak in most countries and regions, should be viewed as a time-dependent filter, modulating the underlying true death curve. After having characterized the Swedish reporting process, we show how smoothing of the Swedish reported daily deaths series results in a curve distinctly different from the true death curve. We also comment on the use of nowcasting methods. Conclusions: Modelers and analysts using the series of new daily deaths by reporting date should take extra care when it is highly variable and when there is a significant reporting delay. It might be appropriate to instead use the series of deaths by death date combined with a nowcasting algorithm as basis for their analysis.

Abstract:
ObjectivesTo determine the rate of sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI) for infants born after a previous SUDI in the same family, and to establish the causes of death and the frequency of child protection concerns in families with recurrent SUDI.DesignObservational study using clinical case records.SettingThe UK’s Care of Next Infant (CONI) programme, which provides additional care to families who have experienced SUDI with their subsequent children.PatientsInfants registered on CONI between January 2000 and December 2015.Main outcome measuresCause of death, presence of modifiable risk factors for SUDI and child protection concerns.ResultsThere were 6608 live-born infants registered in CONI with 29 deaths. 26 families had 2 deaths, and 3 families had 3 deaths. The SUDI rate for infants born after one SUDI is 3.93 (95% CI 2.7 to 5.8) per 1000 live births. Cause of death was unexplained for 19 first and 15 CONI deaths. Accidental asphyxia accounted for 2 first and 6 CONI deaths; medical causes for 3 first and 4 CONI deaths; and homicide for 2 first and 4 CONI deaths. 10 families had child protection concerns.ConclusionsThe SUDI rate for siblings is 10 times higher than the current UK SUDI rate. Homicide presenting as recurrent SUDI is very rare. Many parents continued to smoke and exposed infants to hazardous co-sleeping situations, with these directly leading to or contributing to the death of six siblings. SUDI parents need support to improve parenting skills and reduce risk to subsequent infants.

Abstract:
Abstract Purpose Diabetes is a growing health problem. The aim of this study was to capture time trends in mortality associated with diabetes. Methods The mortality database of the Veneto region (Italy) includes both the underlying causes of death, and all the diseases mentioned in the death certificate. The annual percent change (APC) in age-standardized rates from 2008 to 2017 was computed by the Joinpoint Regression Program. Results Overall 453,972 deaths (56,074 with mention of diabetes) were observed among subjects aged ≥ 40 years. Mortality rates declined for diabetes as the underlying cause of death and from diabetes-related circulatory diseases. The latter declined especially in females − 4.4 (CI 95% − 5.3/− 3.4), while in males the APC was − 2.8 (CI 95% − 4.0/− 1.6). Conclusion We observed a significant reduction in mortality during the period 2008–2017 in diabetes either as underlying cause of death or when all mentions of diabetes in the death certificate were considered.

Abstract:
Introduction: To better understand the forensic implications of death with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), we reviewed all deaths that were reported to a regional medical examiner jurisdiction involving patients who had an LVAD. Methods: Medical examiner case files between January 2012 and September 2018 were searched for “LVAD” and “left ventricular assist device” to identify deaths that were reported to the medical examiner involving a decedent who had an LVAD at the time of death. Results: During the study period, a total of 14 deaths were reported to the regional medical examiner involving decedents who had an implanted LVAD at the time of death. The average age at death was 64 years, with a range from 40 to 81 years. The underlying cardiac disease leading to LVAD implantation was ischemic heart disease (n = 9), nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy (n = 4), and chemotherapy-related cardiotoxicity (n = 1). Of these 14 deaths, 2 deaths were due to loss of power to the LVAD, 1 death was due to traumatic subdural hemorrhage occurring in the setting of anticoagulation therapy required by LVAD implantation, and 1 death was due to femur fracture following a fall. Discussion: Medical examiners should be familiar with the potential complications of LVADs, especially those complications that may prompt consideration of non-natural manners of death. Medical examiners should also be aware of the tools and investigative strategies that may assist in the investigation of LVAD-related deaths.

Abstract:
The literary project of Gonçalo M. Tavares presents itself as a performative mapping in the Series demarcate territories of implementing the thought that, in turn, the Notebooks materialize. The purpose of the study is the analysis of this literary space, first, in its entirety, a second time, series The Kingdom and, lastly, will highlight it fourth novel of the tetralogy, Learning to Pray in the Era of Technology. Fragment of the novel, through poetry, epic micro-narrative and the test of this writing it is emphasized the heterogeneity and hybridity of records as distinguishing the author marks, so we realize the specificity of the forms and the approach to a performance writing. The novels, the main object of the thesis, convey a speech thematic reiteration accented in contemporary premise of readability of evil and rationality whose post- Auschwitz model intended question. The characters in his characterization and relationships with each other, serve the bottleneck that historical time and the claustrophobic space of a city like cross scenario, delimit, clashing, at all times, with the fear of death. These elements, together with language, also an instrument of power, will be considered for reflection on the literary creation, a zone of ideological and aesthetic commitment.

Abstract:
Background: Incidence of death and hospitalizations have been observed to depend on short-term changes in weather and to increase with extreme temperatures. This thesis aims to strengthen the scientific knowledge on the relationship between temperature and daily deaths, but also the relationship between temperature and daily hospital admissions. Methods: We constructed time series regression models using daily counts of death and daily weather from the Stockholm area incorporating adjustment for potential confounding factors, season, and long-term time trends. From these models, we established the short-term relationship with daily temperatures and the associated relative risks on daily deaths allowing for a delay between exposure and subsequent deaths. Daily hospital admissions and daily temperatures were analyzed correspondingly using data from Skåne. Results: Hot and cold temperatures significantly impact on mortality rates as well as rates of hospitalization in Sweden. We found an immediate heat effect on daily deaths, while the impacts of cold temperatures were delayed up to a week after exposure. Cold-related deaths are generally cardiovascular in nature, while deaths resulting from warm temperatures are cardiovascular, respiratory as well as non-cardiorespiratory in nature. The impacts following a heat wave appear to increase proportionally with the length of the extreme hot conditions. The results suggest that the population aged 45 years and older is the main group at elevated risk of death when exposed to high and low temperatures. Moreover, the results suggest that there are several factors of susceptibility on an individual basis that correspond to larger relative risk with high and/or low temperatures. Daily hospitalisations increased in particular among individuals with respiratory illnesses during extreme persistent heat, whereas high temperatures in general have little impact. In contrast, hospitalizations increased for up to two weeks following exposure to cold temperatures. Conclusions: The health impacts related to temperature are a serious concern and the attributed impacts are likely to increase to some extent in the future due to an ageing population. Public health preventive strategies should be developed to prevent health consequences related to heat waves and cold temperatures. Future studies should aim at identifying susceptible individuals with elevated death risk at hot and cold ambient temperature conditions.

Abstract:
Aerosol Optical Depth [AOD] is an important input for the atmospheric correction of satellite-derived Earth Observation data, and remains the most difficult variable to properly quantify. The Reflectance Change method utilises time-series data from a Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Model to estimate the surface reflectance which is used as an input into the AOD retrieval model. This approach moves away from previous methods that use band ratio techniques, which are problematic over characteristically arid Australian landscapes.

Abstract:
This study explores the complex relations between metaphor, taboos, and X phemisms. More specifically, it focuses on the representation of the taboos of disease, death, and sex through metaphors in a corpus constituted of five American TV series, House, M.D., Grey’s Anatomy, Six Feet Under, How I Met your Mother et Sex and the City. It is divided into three chapters. The first two chapters aim to define the theoretical framework. The study starts with a definition of the concept of “taboo” and its social and historical origins. It leads us to a definition of X phemisms – which are favored to mention taboo topics – and the different word-formation processes that are used for their creation. The second chapter is devoted to the definition of the word-formation process that is central in this study: metaphor. The approach is mainly cognitivist and the aim of the chapter is to define the Conceptual Metaphor Theory. Finally, the last chapter consists in an analysis of the metaphors of the corpus. The aim is to study the influence of the source domains on the creation of metaphorical X phemisms and the different functions that those metaphors may fulfil. One of the main objectives is to explain why metaphors are favored to create metaphors related to taboo topics and to shed light on the particular status of metaphors in TV series

Abstract:
Without bodies, no stories. A vehicle of action, a narrative agent, and the support of a strong identification link between the audience and the character, the body is the main figure of cinematographic and television mediums. If cinema has always, from its early stages, glorified the endless liveliness of bodies, the reverse side of this exposure has simultaneously been lingering: the mute threat of death. However, in films or in television series, if the last breath before death is often synonymous with a ultimate communion with life and with a resistance to death, what happens to the body and the character when death has seized them for ever, and the living – characters and audience – are only left facing the corpse? As a parasite figure, the corpse is neither a character nor even an extra. Both an empty sign and a narrative core, the crime plot will indeed develop from the corpse and its examination, during the autopsy or on the crime scene. And whereas the corpse may seem secondary, even minor, if we look at crime fictions from the angle of its fixed and opaque non-look, it still allows us to see something of the crime and of its deeply unfair nature, and of the relations between the living and a death that appears in its most abject features on the autopsy table. In this study, we will examine how crime fictions stage corpses as disturbingly precise reflects of a contemporary lack of perspective in front of death. Similarly to the philosopher Maxime Coulombe in his essay on zombies, we will consider the fictional corpse as an "analyser of contemporary society" and as a "symptom of what is tormenting the consciousness of our time"

Abstract:
It will be argued that, at the introductory level at least, the Internet has rendered the statistics textbook redundant. This is because textbooks are inevitably out-of-date, often ossifying techniques rather than investigating fundamental concepts, especially those which continue to excite controversy to this day; these include Bayes’ theorem and the competing merits of significance testing and of confidence levels. The author will cite evidence from the library of his own former university, and outline his plans for a Statistics Vademecum. This will not be a textbook, but rather series of questions which direct the reader to look up concepts on the internet and answer Socratic-style questions about them.. The vision is that the reader should arrive at an informed opinion on the cliché ‘lies, damned lies....’, and appreciate that is neither mathematics nor IT, but rather logic that presents the challenge in understanding statistics .

Abstract:
Introduction: Metaplastic breast carcinoma (MBC) is understood as a heterogeneous group of malignant tumors, which exhibits the transformation of part or its entire glandular carcinomatous component into a nonglandular component by means of epithelial and mixed mesenchymal differentiation. The MBC is a rare and aggressive breast cancer, accounting for approximately 1% of all breast tumors that have a worse prognosis. The aim of this study was to describe four cases of MBC, analyzing the progression of patients in a mean follow-up of 25 months (11–43 months). Case series: All patients were female. The mean age of the four cases of the series was 50 years (40–61 years). All patients had tumors that were histologically classified as metaplastic carcinoma. The mean tumor size of the series was 8.3 cm (2.2–15.5 cm). Two patients had the angiolymphatic invasion, and none had the perineural invasion. In three cases, there was an axillary node involvement. None of the cases had metastasis at the time of diagnosis. All patients underwent surgical treatment. Concerning complementary treatment, all patients underwent chemotherapy, three underwent radiation therapy, and two received hormone therapy. Three patients had systemic recurrence with metastases (i.e., all progressed to death). The study was approved by a Research Ethics Committee, under CAAE Nº 30154720.0.0000.5209. Conclusion: With a mean follow-up of 25 months (11–43 months), three out of four cases (75%) presented systemic recurrence with metastases (i.e., all culminating in death), and one patient is alive without evidence of malignancy.

Abstract:
Study purpose: With increasing state legalization, marijuana use has become commonplace throughout much of the United States. This has resulted in expected and potentially dangerous consequences. Existing literature on unintentional exposure focuses primarily on the pediatric population. Despite mounting cases of unintentional exposure to marijuana, minimal research has been published on the effects of non-consensual marijuana consumption in adults. Here, we report on a cluster of adults with unwitting marijuana exposure. Methods: A cluster of patients who presented to the Emergency Department (ED) within one hour of ingesting marijuana-contaminated food at a wedding reception event were subsequently referred to the Medical Toxicology Service. We conducted a retrospective analysis of twelve subject charts who were exposed to the marijuana-contaminated food and a qualitative analysis of six of the 12 subjects’ experiences who willingly consented to be interviewed. The interviews were then analyzed and coded to categorize common themes within the subjects’ experiences. Themes categorically selected throughout the interview analysis included “Thoughts & Feelings” and “Effect on Work.” The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board. Results: Three of the subjects (25%) required prolonged observation due to persistent symptoms of acute marijuana intoxication. Eleven (92%) were urine immunoassay positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Two subjects (17%) tested positive for ethanol in their blood. None of the subjects reported a prior history of marijuana use. Common symptoms experienced by the subjects included confusion (50%), difficulty speaking (67%), nausea (25%), tremors (17%), and feelings of unreality (33%). All interviewed subjects reported sleepiness and three (50%) reported a negative impact on work. Subjects also reported multiple emotions, including anger, confusion, disbelief, and helplessness. None of the cases resulted in admission to the intensive care unit or death. Conclusions: Our case series illuminates the effects of unwitting and/or unintentional marijuana exposure in adults, with sufficient systemic effects resulting in individuals seeking emergency care. Legal and ethical barriers have limited the study of marijuana outside of controlled conditions. While the exposure in this study did not result in admission to the ICU or death, it did result in psychological distress and reported symptoms lasting weeks after the incident. As marijuana becomes readily available, the potential as an unwitting or even malicious intoxicant may increase.

Abstract:
The first case of COVID-19 in Nigeria was reported on 27 February 2020. By 30 March 2020, Nigeria had recorded 131 confirmed cases and two deaths. To mitigate the impending health crisis, the Nigerian Government quickly commenced a series of COVID-19 lockdowns across states in Nigeria on 30 March 2020. These lockdowns lasted for three months before a gradual relaxation began on 1 July 2021. However, infection and death cases in the country increased substantially during the months of substantial relaxation of restrictions between October 2020 and March 2021. This paper presents the results of the rapid assessment study in Nigeria between July 2020 and February 2021, which sought to document and understand the differential impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on agricultural commercialisation, food and nutrition security, employment, poverty, and well-being in rural households.

Abstract:
Malaria, HIV and tuberculosis (TB) are significant public health concerns in Mozambique. Malaria was the fourth leading cause of death in the country in 2019, accounting for 42% of deaths among children under 5 years of age (Mugabe et al., 2021; USAID, 2018). Mozambique is among the top eight countries with the highest HIV prevalence; with the second highest mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) rate in the world (Fuente-Soro et al., 2021; Nacarapa et al., 2021). The incidence of TB is rising, with pediatric TB cases almost tripling in recent years (WHO, 2020b; Nguenha et al., 2018; Orlando et al., 2018). Mozambique has one of the highest global incidence of malaria-HIV and TB-HIV co-infection, which raises the likelihood of poor clinical outcomes (Moon et al., 2019; USAID, 2018). This rapid literature review highlights key aspects of the epidemiology of malaria, HIV and TB in Mozambique and challenges in prevention, detection and treatment; and surveys select interventions that seek to address these challenges. This is part of a series of reports looking into Epidemiology of Malaria, human immune deficiency virus (HIV) and tuberculosis (TB) across a set of African Nations.

Abstract:
Malaria, human immune deficiency virus (HIV) and tuberculosis (TB) are leading causes of death and public health threat to millions in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The DRC is the second most malaria affected sub-Saharan African country after Nigeria, with malaria being the leading cause of death in children under 5 years (Lechthaler et al., 2019). The HIV prevalence in the country in the adult population stands at 1%, with extensive variations by region (UNAIDS, 2021c). The DRC is considered a high burden country for TB and HIV infection (Linguissi et al., 2017). This rapid review emphasizes significant elements of the epidemiology of malaria, HIV, and TB in DRC, as well as limitations in prevention, detection, and treatment, and examines a few interventions that aim to address these limitations. Evidence utilised is a mixture of the most recent grey literature NGO (programme reports and related documents) literature supplemented by peer reviewed academic literature from the past five years and national survey data when available. Although the clinical disease aspects of malaria, HIV and TB are well-researched there is less research available on socio-demographic variation, disease control challenges and interventions targeting these in the DRC. This is part of a series of reports looking into Epidemiology of Malaria, human immune deficiency virus (HIV) and tuberculosis (TB) across a set of African Nations.

Abstract:
Under the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistance to Firefighter Grant Fire Prevention and Safety Research Program, Underwriters Laboratories examined fire service concerns of photovoltaic (PV) systems. These concerns include firefighter vulnerability to electrical and casualty hazards when mitigating a fire involving photovoltaic (PV) modules systems. The need for this project is significant acknowledging the increasing use of photovoltaic systems, growing at a rate of 30% annually. As a result of greater utilization, traditional firefighter tactics for suppression, ventilation and overhaul have been complicated, leaving firefighters vulnerable to potentially unrecognized exposure. Though the electrical and fire hazards associated with electrical generation and distribution systems is well known, PV systems present unique safety considerations. A very limited body of knowledge and insufficient data exists to understand the risks to the extent that the fire service has been unable to develop safety solutions and respond in a safe manner. This fire research project developed the empirical data that is needed to quantify the hazards associated with PV installations. This data provides the foundation to modify current or develop new firefighting practices to reduce firefighter death and injury. A functioning PV array was constructed at Underwriters Laboratories in Northbrook, IL to serve as a test fixture. The main test array consisted of 26 PV framed modules rated 230 W each (5980 W total rated power). Multiple experiments were conducted to investigate the efficacy of power isolation techniques and the potential hazard from contact of typical firefighter tools with live electrical PV components. Existing fire test fixtures located at the Delaware County Emergency Services Training Center were modified to construct full scale representations of roof mounted PV systems. PV arrays were mounted above Class A roofs supported by wood trusses. Two series of experiments were conducted. The first series represented a room of content fire, extending into the attic space, breaching the roof and resulting in structural collapse. Three PV technologies were subjected to this fire condition – rack mounted metal framed, glass on polymer modules, building integrated PV shingles, and a flexible laminate attached to a standing metal seam roof. A second series of experiments was conducted on the metal frame technology. These experiments represented two fire scenarios, a room of content fire venting from a window and the ignition of debris accumulation under the array. The results of these experiments provide a technical basis for the fire service to examine their equipment, tactics, standard operating procedures and training content. Several tactical considerations were developed utilizing the data from the experiments to provide specific examples of potential electrical shock hazard from PV installations during and after a fire event.
