Full text
Abstract:
A previously developed feature library and algorithm are improved in order to develop a software capable of designing of parts to be manufactured using a four-axis CNC lathe. The developed program is composed of sections which are<br>part geometry design, process planning, cutting tool and machining parameter selection, part program generation and G-code simulation for verification. The developed program is capable of designing parts which contain axisymetric features for turning and related operations, and non-axisymetric features for milling on facial, lateral and cylindrical surfaces. Implemented design procedure defines a blank material shape that can be circular or polygonal cross-sectioned bar or a pre-manufactured part. A detailed database is created for proper cutting tool selection and machining data determination. User can either define or let the program to automatically select the cutting parameters like cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut for each cutting tool with respect to the workpiece material being machined. After completing design and process planning procedures<br>information for generation of the CNC program becomes readily available for editing or transferring to the CNC machine tool. User can also simulate the NC program to verify the tool path. User friendly interface, which runs on Autodesk&#039<br>s INVENTOR software to visualize the design process, allows design and modifications to be done very easily moreover previously designed parts can be redesigned to produce new modified parts.

Abstract:
For the last three years, D.C. United and the District of Columbia have been negotiating a site for a new stadium for their soccer club. The owners of United wanted to take a small parcel of the land now known as â Poplar Pointâ , an undeveloped brown-field on the Southeast side of the Anacostia River. The switch from the Anthony Williams to the Adrian Fenty administration in 2007 has proven unkind for the club, which to this day is embroiled in negotiations with the City for the Poplar Point site. While following this debate in the media, I couldnâ t help but question why United was not pursuing a plot of land on their current site. The club now plays in RFK Stadium, a venue ill-equipped for the sport that costs the club millions of dollars a year because they cannot fill its stands. The site, however, is located on axis with the Capitol, the Washington Monument, and the Lincoln Memorial. My initial research brought me to France in the 18th century.<br>Master of Architecture

Abstract:
In this essay the author demonstrates that it is possible to “reconstruct” the figure of Caterina Colombini (1340?-1387) – Giovanni Colombini’s cousin – through a group of texts: the hagiography of Caterina, the letters sent to her by Giovanni Colombini and, finally, Giovanni’s biography written by Feo Belcari. The author divides his text into four parts: the first part analyzes the content of Caterina’s hagiography; the second examines the linguistic form of the hagiographic text; in the third, the author analyzes the latent meaning of the window, a symbolic place where Giovanni and Caterina converse on divine topics; in the last part, to conclude, the teachings that Giovanni gives to Catherine and her spiritual daughters – the Gesuate – are analyzed.

Abstract:
Abstract A feature library, an algorithm, and an interactive computer program are developed for design of parts machinable in four-axis CNC lathes with milling capabilities. Parts can be checked, visualized, manipulated and modified during or after the design. Previously designed parts can be retrieved and modified for design of new similar parts. The feature library comprises features for turning and related operations; features for planar milling operations to remove material from the cylindrical surface or from the face of the workpiece; features for cylindrical milling operations to remove material from the cylindrical surface of the workpiece; features for boring and related operations; features for single and patterned holes, and hole operations, such as, center drilling, drilling, boring, reaming, groove cutting, tapping, counterboring, countersinking and spotfacing, and features for detail operations such as external and internal threading, external and internal helical groove cutting, knurling and machining of various slots. Parts are designed by using a hybrid algorithm. The main geometry of the part is formed by using the primary operations. For this, parametrically modeled primitives are retrieved from the library, and joined by using union operations. Then, milling, boring and hole operations and details are included again by using parametrically modeled features and subtraction operations as the secondary operations. Blank geometry, which can be a circular, hexagonal, square or rectangular bar; or a part made by forging or casting is defined again by using operations on available primitives. All of the features contain information on process sequencing, cutting tools, tool paths, machining parameters and G-codes. Thus, when the design of the part is completed, information for generation of the CNC program becomes readily available.

Abstract:
The mechanism of mixing in axial flow compressors has been investigated in two low speed machines. For reasons of length this is described in two parts. Results in a 4-stage compressor are described here in Part I and show that the mixing coefficients across the first and the third stators are of similar magnitude. Part I also describes the background and experimental facilities and techniques used in both parts together with the nomenclature and all the references. Part II describes the results from a large single stage compressor. It also presents measurements of mixing in a simple two-dimensional duct, and presents conclusions for the whole investigation.

Abstract:
Traditional metal-based manufacturing processes are being driven to multi-axis machining. Manufacturing time studies have proven that there are significant cycle time reductions using multi-axis CNC machining as compared to multi-fixture CNC machining. Four and five-axis machining requires the use of software to produce both required part geometry and the resulting tool paths. However, while the software and machine tool technology are present, engineers with the appropriate educational background are harder to find. The skills required to design, tool, program, and machine four and five-axis parts are part of few, if any, educational programs. The manufacturing engineering technology program at Arizona State University is actively addressing this shortfall. Educational materials have been developed, tested and employed in classes supporting simultaneous 4-axis machining utilizing a Haas VF2 and HRT210 4th axis rotary table. Similar materials for a Haas VF2 with TR160 5-axis trunnion, capable of simultaneous 5-axis machining, are being beta tested.

Abstract:
The nomenclature and polysemiosis of body parts has constituted a central part of linguistics, and of Linguistic Anthropology. The ramifications of such work make inroads into our understandings of many fields, including language contact, semiotics, and so forth, This current paper identifies the structures and emerging denotations of expressions of human body parts (HBPs) in Thai language, and ways in which these dimensions reflect polysemy. The study thus applies the following methods: Field research methods of linguistics, description, comparison, and collation. As sources of data, this study surveys Thai rhymes, fairy tales, riddles and riddle songs, rhyming stories, children’s songs and linguistic data of daily speeches in the northwest of Vietnam. The paper uses theories on word meaning and the transformation of word meaning. To aid analysis, this paper applies methods of analyzing meaning components so to construct significative meaning structures of words expressing HBPs in Thai language, thus identifying the semantemes chosen to be the basis for the transformation. In the polysemy of words expressing HBPs of the four limbs, the polysemy of words expressing the following parts were studied: khèn - tay, cánh tay (arm); mễ – tay, bàn tay (hand); khà - đùi (thigh); tìn - chân, bàn chân (leg, foot). Directions of semantic transformation of words expressing HBPs in Thai language are as diversified and as multi-leveled as Vietnamese. Furthermore, in Thai language, there occur differences in the four scopes of semantic transformation, as compared with Vietnamese, including “people’s characteristics,” “human activities,” “nomination of things with activities like HBPs’ activities,” and “unit of measurement.” This study contributes to Linguistic Anthropology by suggesting that the polysemy of words expressing HBPs of the four limb area in Thai language will outline a list of linguistic phenomena which serve as the basis to understand cultural and national features, in the light of perception and categorization of the reality of the Thai minority with reference to Vietnamese.

In ASME 2016 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2016-65908.

Full text
Abstract:
Bringing a high tech product to the market as soon as possible has never been so critical. Quality control of critical parts manufactured in large quantities is a problem to solve in many industries ranging from aerospace to automotive. If there are precision parts with very tight dimensional tolerances in the assembly, each and every dimension of every part must be measured. Otherwise parts with dimensions out of tolerances will create more trouble in the later steps of the assembly. Measuring the dimensions of precision parts using high precision coordinate measurement machines (CMM) is time consuming and can be quite cumbersome. Also the initial investment to be made in order to acquire a precise CMM is quite expensive. An alternative solution to this quality assurance (QA) problem is utilizing the vibrational characteristics of the manufactured part. A quality acceptance criterion using those characteristics of the part can be developed. Natural frequencies and mode shapes of the part are the key parameters to be measured when deciding the part to fail or pass. For this purpose, a test setup with the ability of automated modal testing is required. In this study, such a system is designed and developed named as the modal test robot (MTR). The MTR consists of an automated modal test hammer to excite the modes of test part, a mechanism to support the hitting hammer and a heavy granite table to secure the part. By using finite element (FE) analysis, the natural frequency range for the acceptable test part is determined. High fidelity FE analysis models are utilized to ensure good agreement between analysis and test results. Three different parts called the spool; the four arm star and the blade are examined as case studies. In case studies, relationship between part dimension and the natural frequency of the part is calculated by utilizing parametric FE model for each part. Using this relationship, fail or pass criterion is developed according to a specific natural frequency of the part. Natural frequencies of the part are measured on the MTR. Since modal test is carried out by using the MTR, repeatability and coherence of the test results are increased. By this procedure, a technician can make a quick decision whether the measured part passes of fails by just checking the natural frequency. Utilizing the vibrational characteristics as a fail or pass criterion for parts instead of a dimensional measurements is a fast and cheap method that can be employed in QA processes. By implementing this methodology, QA cycle times for manufactured parts reduces 90% and higher number of parts can be controlled in a limited inspection time.

Abstract:
An oft-cited benefit of additive manufacturing (AM), or “3D-printing,” technology is the ability to produce parts at the point of use by downloading a digital file and making the part at a local printer. This has the potential to greatly compress supply chains, lead times, inventories, and design iterations for custom parts. As a result of this, both manufacturing and logistics companies are investigating and investing in AM capacity for production at the point of use. However, it can be imagined that the feasibility and benefits are a function of size, materials, build time, manufacturing complexity, cost, and competing technologies. Because of this, there are instances where the viability of point-of-use manufacturing ranges from the perfect solution to the worst possible choice. Unsettled Topics on the Benefits of Additive Manufacturing for Production at the Point of Use in the Mobility Industry discusses the benefits, challenges, trade-offs, and other determining factors regarding this new level of AM possibilities.
