Memories thread and unify our overall sense of being. With the accumulation of our knowledge about how memories are formed, consolidated, retrieved, and updated, neuroscience has reached a point where brain cells active during these discrete mnemonic processes can be identified and manipulated at rapid timescales. Here, I begin with historical studies that lead to the modem memory engram theory. Then, I present our recent advances in memory research that combine transgenic and optogenetic approaches to reveal underlying neuronal substrates sufficient for activating mnemonic processes. Our studies' conclusions are threefold: (1) we provide proof of principle evidence demonstrating that learning-related neural changes can be isolated at the level of single cells, and that these cells can then be tagged for subsequent manipulation; (2) a defined subset of hippocampus cells are sufficient to elicit the neuronal and behavioral expression of memory recall, as well as sufficient to modify existing positive and negative memories; (3) and finally, artificially activated memories can be leveraged to acutely and chronically suppress psychiatric disease-related states. We propose that hippocampus cells that show activity-dependent changes during learning construct a cellular basis for contextual memory engrams and that directly activating these endogenous neuronal processes may be an effective means to correct maladaptive behaviors.

On October 26th, 2006, in the city of Salvador de Bahia, Brasil, the Interamerican Society of Philosophy  organized an Academic Homage in memory of Eduardo Rabossi. The homage took place in the context of the XII National Philosophical Meeting in Brazil, organized by the Associação Nacional de Pós-graduação em Filosofia (ANPOF), at which time also an Extraordinary Assembly of the Society took place. Anfang Juli 2012 haben wir auf dem Südfriedhof in Leipzig von Ernst Eichler fur immer Abschied nehmen müssen. Ganz in der Nähe von August Leskien und Wilhelm Streitberg hat er seine letzte Ruhestätte gefunden. Mit Ernst Eichler ist ein Genius der historischen Sprachforschung von uns gegangen. Fur den Wissenschaftsfächer von Akademie und Universität in Leipzig ist das ein grosser und schlimmer Verlust. Der Wissenschaftler Ernst Eichler hat zu seinen Lebzeiten viele Anerkennungen, Würdigungen und Auszeichnungen für sein bewundernswert breites Lebenswerk in der Sprachforschung erfahren. Seine Leistungen und Verdienste sind in Zeitschriften, Festschriften und Sammelbänden in ihrer Vorbildbedeutung dargestellt worden. Sie sind auch in unserer Fachzeitschrift zur Onomastik zuletzt zu seinem 80. Geburtstag in einer von mir gegebenen Würdigung nachlesbar. Es muss daher heute nichts wiederholt werden, was wohl den meisten in guter Erinnerung ist.

Habíamos pactado la entrevista con Pilar Coll, para Palabras Mayores tres semanas antes de su partida. Hoy hace 25 días que se fue y el vacío que ha dejado será difícilmente cubierto. La trayectoria de vida de Pilar ha dejado una huella invalorable en nuestro país. Aunque no pudimos contar con su testimonio, desde este espacio queremos brindarle un homenaje, y compartir con nuestros lectores parte de su vida y su labor, para ello nos permitimos invitarlos a ver el documental “Pilar Coll: un ejemplo de lucha”[2], el que da fe de su incansable trabajo y  dedicación por la defensa de los derechos humanos en nuestro país, en momentos tan críticos como la época del terrorismo, en su participación en la Comisión de la Verdad y Reconciliación, y más tarde en las mismas cárceles. Abstract:
This thesis investigates the memorial and monumental aspects of Jean Genet’s final memoir, Un captif amoureux. My introduction discusses biographical reading as a predominant trend in the critical literature and argues that this way of reading Genet empties out the political force of a deeply committed literary text, severing Un captif from the historical genealogies that led to its production. In response to this history, my work addresses the text’s memorial and monumental character in order to argue, first, for the sincerity of Genet’s articulations of political affinity to the Palestinians and the Black Panthers and, secondly, to argue that mourning, and the memorial impulse, are coextensive, in this text, with the (retrospective and prospective) production of community. I suggest that Genet considers memorial art as a means of assembling this community, whose point of connection (mourning) enables the transcendence (without the negation) of what might be considered to be irreconcilable differences, specifically national, ethno-religious, social, sexual and racial categories of identity. Chapter one considers the figure of cemetery as a spatial metaphor for the memory work being undertaken by the memoir. I argue that Genet conceives the power of the text’s commemorative capacity to be in its creation of a flexible and indeterminate discursive space, a figurative territory, for the literally dispossessed (living and dead) to inhabit. For Genet, the limitations of this project circulate around the identity and disposition of the prospective reader who, despite sometimes being characterized as sympathetic, appears to inhabit the text’s discursive space as an outsider. Chapter two turns from the architectural towards the sculptural. Unlike the spatial metaphor of the cemetery, which suggests habitation, dwelling, and the confluence of perspectives, the recurring image of the pièta suggests the devotional and ceremonial qualities of the memoir as a commemorative object and the text’s uneasy position within, and relationship to, the broader history and economy of Western representation. Comparing Genet to the vandalizer of Michelangelo’s pièta Lászlo Toth, I argue that his “vandalism” of the pièta produces both a new image to be circulated but, in creating a new image, a new referent also emerges.

David Maslanka's music has been widely performed in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and Japan; however, to date, there are only two published documents that provide information about his music. J. Patrick Brooks presented a theoretical analysis of Maslanka's Concerto for Piano, Winds and Percussion in his D.M.A. dissertation, and in The College Band Director's Journal1 Thomas Wubbenhorst published an article in which he discussed Maslanka's wind band piece, A Child's Garden of Dreams. This author's document will further contribute to what has already been written about David Maslanka and his music. According to recent research, there are no studies that focus on Maslanka's use of chorale tunes in his wind band compositions. In addition to the composition selected for this document, Maslanka uses chorale tunes in numerous other wind band works, such as A Tuning Piece: Songs of Fall and Winter (1995), Montana Music: Chorale Variations (1993), and Symphony No. 4 (1993). The purpose of this document is to help musicians understand David Maslanka's use of a chorale tune in In Memoriam. Chapter 1 contains biographical information about David Maslanka, including an explanation of the influences of J. S. Bach and C. G. Jung, and a general commentary on Maslanka's compositional style. Chapter 2 contains a description of his use of a chorale tune in In Memoriam and the compositional techniques he uses with respect to the elements of music. Matthias Drude: In memoriam Johannes Biehle (2019) (Im Auftrag des Lausitzer Musiksommers) für 2 Orgeln Werkeinführung Johannes Biehle vereint in seiner Person Widersprüche des ersten Drittels des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er versteht sich im Orgelbau als Anhänger der pneumatischen Traktur, während die aufkommende Orgelbewegung sich für eine Wiederbelebung der barocken Orgeln mit ihrer mechanischen Traktur einsetzte. Seine Kirchenmusikanschauung ist durchaus romantisch geprägt. Während etwa Hugo Distler um 1930 die ausschließlich dienende, liturgische Funktion der Kirchenmusik betont, lesen wir 17 Jahre vorher bei Johannes Biehle: „Wenn die Kunst auch selbst nicht Religion ist, … so versetzt sie uns doch in die Atmosphäre der Religion. Sie hilft religiöse Gefühle in Bewegung bringen, vertieft und verklärt die Stimmungen, ja sie kann durch ihre erhabensten Offenbarungen unser innerstes Wesen so tief anregen, dass manche Menschen nur durch die Kunst dazu gelangen zu wissen, was Religion ist.“ (Johannes Biehle: Theorie des Kirchenbaues vom Standpunkte des Kirchenmusikers und des Redners mit einer Glockenkunde, Wittenberg 1913, S. 17) Allerdings zeigt Biehles Interesse an Liturgie, dass ihm ganz im Sinne der späteren kirchenmusikalische Erneuerungsbewegung um Hugo Distler eine enge Verbindung von Musik und Gottesdienst sehr wohl am Herzen lag. Zu den zukunftsweisenden Aspekten des Wirkens von Johannes Biehle zählen seine bahnbrechenden Arbeiten im Bereich des Kirchenbaus und der Raumakustik. Die Auftragskomposition „In memoriam Johannes Biehle“ möchte der Komplexität der Persönlichkeit gerecht werden. Romantisches findet sich neben Zeitgenössischem, musikalische Logik wird durchkreuzt von Unerwartetem, wodurch die Form weiträumiger und verschlungener wird als es die gedrängte Exposition vermuten lässt. Der Anfang der von Juli bis September 2019 entstandenen Komposition wird dem gestellten Thema gleich in zweifacher Hinsicht gerecht. Interessenschwerpunkte eines Akustikers: Raumklang und Nachhall werden in den Generalpausen zwischen den kurzen, lauten Akkorden erlebbar; die Nachhallzeit wird somit Teil der kompositorischen Idee. Die Außenstimmen der Akkorde werden durch den Tritonus B-e gebildet, erster und letzter Buchstabe des Nachnamens Biehle. Eine wichtige Rolle zum Beispiel in dem bereits nach wenigen Takten erklingenden Seitengedanken spielen auch die Töne „ais“ und „h“. Das „h“ ist Teil des Nach- und des Vornamens. Das „ais“ ist mit dem „b“ enharmonisch identisch. Zugleich enthält es drei weitere Buchstaben des Jubilars (Johannes Biehle). Im weiteren Verlauf erklingen mehrfach die musikalisch verwertbaren Tonbuchstaben des Nachnamens: B-E-H-E als Motiv. Mit dem Wechsel von B-Dur- und E-Dur-Akkorden schließt, wiederum auf Buchstaben des Nachnamens bezugnehmend, das etwa 13-minütige einsätzige Werk.

Anfang Juli 2012 haben wir auf dem Südfriedhof in Leipzig von Ernst Eichler fur immer Abschied nehmen müssen. Ganz in der Nähe von August Leskien und Wilhelm Streitberg hat er seine letzte Ruhestätte gefunden. Mit Ernst Eichler ist ein Genius der historischen Sprachforschung von uns gegangen. Fur den Wissenschaftsfächer von Akademie und Universität in Leipzig ist das ein grosser und schlimmer Verlust. Der Wissenschaftler Ernst Eichler hat zu seinen Lebzeiten viele Anerkennungen, Würdigungen und Auszeichnungen für sein bewundernswert breites Lebenswerk in der Sprachforschung erfahren. Seine Leistungen und Verdienste sind in Zeitschriften, Festschriften und Sammelbänden in ihrer Vorbildbedeutung dargestellt worden. Sie sind auch in unserer Fachzeitschrift zur Onomastik zuletzt zu seinem 80. Geburtstag in einer von mir gegebenen Würdigung nachlesbar. Es muss daher heute nichts wiederholt werden, was wohl den meisten in guter Erinnerung ist.

Gleicher Name, verschiedene Dinge. – Die vorliegende Arbeit, die etwas verspätet dem Andenken von Prof. Dr. Ernst Eichler gewidmet ist, beschreibt die zwei gegensätzlichen Tendenzen in der Namengebung, einerseits in der identischen Namengebung in den ursprünglichen sorbisch/polabisch/pomoranischen Gebieten Deutschlands, andererseits in der heutigen Umbenennung hauptsächlich britischer Ortsnamen in die ursprünglichen Namen der Erstnationen in Kanada zur Zeit der europäischen Landnahme. Unsere Untersuchung stützt sich vorwiegend auf die Namen im sorbischdeutschen Interferenzgebiet Deutschlands sowie auf die Namen in der Provinz British Columbia in Kanada. Diese Umbenennungstendenz hat damit gleichzeitig auch eine Angleichung der onomastischen Wissenschaftsmethodologie in Kanada an die Methodologie speziell der deutschen Namenforschung in Leipzig zur Folge.

Abstract:
This essay is focused on Alfred Tennyson’s In Memoriam, interpreting the poem against the background of a Petrarchan tradition. In this text I show how Tennyson’s work exhibits several parallels to the traditional elements of Petrarchism, both in terms of the themes it explores and of itsmore formal aspects. Among these commonalities are such things as a persistent focus on a distant object of affection, a sense of conflict or tension between earthly and divine love and a overall chronology and progression which ties the sequence together into an almost narrative structure. Besides these similarities, I also explore how In Memoriam differs from its Petrarchan model, andhow its differences are born of the particular circumstances in which it was written. Thus I also show how Tennyson manages to adapt an older literary tradition to the needs of his own time.

Abstract:
Although Alfred Tennyson's 1850 elegy, In Memoriam, has long been regarded for the quality of its grief and its doubt, the deepened sense of struggle and doubt produced by his allusions to Horace in both the matter and the meter of the poem have not been considered. Attending to both syntactical/tonal allusions and metrical allusions to Horace's Odes in In Memoriam, I will examine Horace's role in creating meaning in Tennyson's poem. Drawing on various critics and Tennyson's own works, I argue that Tennyson was uncommonly familiar with Horace's Odes and Horatian Alcaic (the most common meter of the Odes). I explore the similarities between the In Memoriam stanza form and the Horatian Alcaic as well as their differences to demonstrate that, while he was certainly capable of more closely replicating the Alcaic in English, Tennyson suggests but ultimately resists Horace's meter. Resistance to Horace's meter mirrors Tennyson's resistance to Horace's paganism. I conclude that Tennyson's identification with Horace, but not too close an identification, serves to enhance the themes of the poem—struggle, tension, grief, and doubt—in a way that would go unnoticed without a close examination of Horace's influence upon In Memoriam.
