Abstract:

This study explored the intercultural conflict between urban Nepalis, who believe in Western medicine, and the Jhakris, Nepalese traditional healers. Nepalis in Western influenced urban areas made traditional healing practices illegal, resulting in violent arrests and beatings of Jhakris by police and occasional violent retaliation by Jhakris. This research sought to understand the roots of the intercultural conflict between the urban Nepali society and the Jhakris, and suggest possible solutions to reduce this intercultural conflict. Aspect splits can affect agreement, Case, and even preposition insertion. This paper discusses the functional ‘why’ and the theoretical ‘how’ of aspect splits. Aspect splits are an economical way to mark aspect by preserving or suppressing some independent element in one aspect. In formal terms, they are produced in the same way as coda conditions in phonology, with positional/contextual faithfulness.This approach captures the additive effects of cross-cutting splits. The objectives of the present study in rural Nepali pregnant women living in the terai were: 1) to identify the risk factors of severe anemia and investigate whether risk factors for anemia without iron deficiency, iron deficiency without anemia and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) were different; 2) to examine the effect of vitamin A supplementation, alone or combined with iron, on hemoglobin (Hb) and soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR); and 3) to identify the risk factors of low birth weight (LBW) and preterm delivery, focusing on maternal Hb concentrations.
