Abstract:

Tableau d’honneur de la Faculté des études supérieures et postdoctorales, 2009-2010 La présente thèse propose une étude complète de l'obligation in solidum en droit privé québécois. Elle en embrasse donc tous les aspects : origines, nature, justification, portée et effets. Elle cherche principalement à comprendre et à cerner cette notion (Partie 1) et à en préciser le régime ainsi que le champ d'application (Partie II). Pour éclairer notre analyse, nous retraçons les origines historiques de l'obligation in solidum en droit romain, en Ancien droit français et en droit français moderne. L'obligation in solidum telle qu'elle existe aujourd 'hui est formellement née en doctrine et en jurisprudence françaises au tournant du 20e siècle. Au Québec, avant le début du 21 e siècle, sa présence s'est avérée discrète et incertaine. Nous examinons également, quoique de manière moins systématique, la présence de l'obligation in solidum dans d'autres juridictions de tradition civiliste et en droit de tradition anglaise. Cet exercice nous a permis de construire notre vision de l'obligation in solidum, tout en exposant et critiquant celles des principaux auteurs français et québécois qui se sont intéressés au sujet, et ce de la fin des années 1800 jusqu'à aujourd'hui. À partir de la vision de l'obligation in solidum qui fut ainsi construite, nous avons dégagé le régime juridique de l'institution ainsi que son champ d'application en droit québécois. Par une étude et une comparaison systématique avec le régime de la solidarité, régime qui est prévu de façon détaillée par les législateurs québécois et français, nous proposons un régime juridique pour l'obligation in solidum. Après avoir ainsi posé ces assises générales, notre thèse est complétée avec des assises vraiment particulières au droit québécois. Le champ d'application de l'obligation in solidum est intimement lié dans tout système juridique à l'espace octroyé par le législateur et la jurisprudence à l'obligation solidaire. Le droit québécois diffère à cet égard de façon notable du droit français. Pourtant, le droit québécois a formellement reconnu l'obligation in solidum et la jurisprudence en fait maintenant un usage constant. En s'appuyant sur leur structure, leurs fondements théoriques et leurs effets pratiques, nous dégageons le champ d'application souhaitable de l'obligation solidaire et de l'obligation in solidum en droit privé québécois.

Abstract:

Cette thèse propose une étude du régime de l’obligation à la dette douanière lorsqu’elle implique plusieurs débiteurs, en se basant sur la notion d’obligation in solidum. Cette obligation a été retracée depuis ses origines pénales jusqu’à sa dégradation en un simple dérivé de l’obligation solidaire au XXe siècle. L’analyse des sources romaines met en lumière ses caractéristiques fondamentales de l’obligation in solidum, qui la singularisent de l’obligation solidaire. Sur le plan structurel, l’obligation in solidum se distingue par une structure reposant sur la pluralité d’objets individuels pour chaque codébiteur et une cause indivisible. L’étude avance une qualification contractuelle des actes douaniers particuliers, incluant des autorisations et des déclarations de placement, les définissant respectivement comme contrat-cadre et contrats d’application. Ces analyses révèlent une logique de bonne foi et introduisent le concept de « dol douanier communautaire » pour expliquer l’annulation des contrats entachés de mauvaise foi. Sur le plan de la dette douanière elle-même, les faits générateurs de l’obligation révèlent sa nature indivisible et les caractéristiques propres à une obligation in solidum. Chaque débiteur est personnellement responsable de l'intégralité de la dette, en raison de cette cause indivisible, tout en conservant des objets indépendants de la dette, structure qui rend le régime solidaire inapplicable. La distinction entre obligation solidaire et obligation in solidum se manifeste dans l’absence de bénéfices de discussion et de division, confirmant la nature in solidum de l’obligation douanière. La seconde partie explore les effets secondaires du régime in solidum de la dette douanière, comme la prescription, la remise de dette et la transaction. En matière de prescription, la pluralité des faits générateurs affecte les délais de prescription ainsi que la portée des effets relatifs des actes interruptifs ou suspensifs, illustrant le caractère indépendant des objets de l’obligation douanière. Quant à la remise de dette, l’analyse conclut que le créancier peut accorder une remise partielle sans affecter les autres débiteurs, en cohérence avec les principes de l’obligation in solidum. L’étude des causes d’extinction montre que la dette douanière, dotée de finalités indemnitaire et répressive, peut subsister malgré la disparition de sa cause indemnitaire si le débiteur a encouru des poursuites. Derrière ce régime européen d’apparence confuse et semblant dépourvu de logique se trouvait en réalité un régime d’obligation à pluralité de sujets, dont les propriétés fondamentales et structurelles constituaient des clés de compréhension, rendant perceptible l’essence logique qui en animait le fonctionnement. C’est à l’aune de cette découverte que nous sommes parvenus à valider l’hypothèse selon laquelle l’obligation à la dette douanière obéissait au régime de l’obligation in solidum, en ce qu’elle était pourvue des mêmes caractéristiques fondamentales et structurelles, que son fonctionnement obéissait à une logique semblable et enfin qu’elle produisait des effets principaux et secondaires identiques à cette institution romaine préjustinienne This thesis focuses on the study of the regime governing customs debt obligations involving multiple debtors, based on the notion of in solidum obligation. This concept has been traced from its penal origins to its degradation as a mere derivative of solidary obligation in the 20th century. An analysis of Roman sources highlights the fundamental characteristics of in solidum obligation, which distinguish it from solidary obligation. Structurally, the in solidum obligation is characterized by a framework based on multiple individual objects for each co-debtor and an indivisible cause. The study advances a contractual qualification of specific customs acts, including authorizations and placement declarations, defining them respectively as a framework contract and application contracts. These analyses reveal a logic of good faith and introduce the concept of “community customs fraud,” explaining the annulment of contracts tainted by bad faith. Regarding customs debt itself, the obligation’s triggering events reveal its indivisible nature and the characteristics inherent to an in solidum obligation. Each debtor is personally responsible for the entire debt due to this indivisible cause, while maintaining independent objects within the debt, making the solidarity regime inapplicable. The distinction between solidary obligation and in solidum obligation is apparent in the absence of the benefits of discussion and division, confirming the in solidum nature of the customs debt obligation. The second part explores secondary effects of the in solidum customs debt regime, such as prescription, debt remission, and transaction. In terms of prescription, the plurality of triggering events affects both the prescription periods and the relative effects of interruptive or suspensive acts, illustrating the independent character of customs debt objects. Regarding debt remission, the analysis concludes that the creditor may grant partial remission without impacting other debtors, aligning with the principles of in solidum obligation. The study of extinction causes shows that customs debt, endowed with indemnifying and punitive purposes, may persist despite the disappearance of its indemnifying cause if the debtor is subject to prosecution. Behind this seemingly complex and illogical European regime lies a multi-subject obligation system, whose fundamental and structural properties offer key insights, revealing the underlying logic driving its function. This discovery allowed us to validate the hypothesis that customs debt obligation adheres to the in solidum obligation regime, as it shares the same fundamental and structural characteristics, operates under a similar logic, and ultimately produces both primary and secondary effects identical to this pre-Justinian Roman institution

Abstract:

Selon l'analyse classique, l'obligation solidaire et l'obligation in solidum sont conçues comme des obligations au total stricto sensu. Chaque codébiteur est censé être débiteur principal de l'intégralité de la dette. Autrement dit, ces deux types d'obligation donneraient naissance à un faisceau d'obligations au total principales groupées autour d'un même objet. Une analyse plus poussée de la matière révèle que cette vision travestit leur vraie nature juridique. Depuis longtemps déjà, l'obligation solidaire et l'obligation in solidum n'appartiennent plus à la catégorie des obligations au total stricto sensu mais à celle des obligations au total lato sensu. Elles doivent être qualifiées de la sorte parce qu'elles permettent effectivement au créancier d'exiger de chaque codébiteur le paiement de toute la dette. Cependant, cet effet n'est pas dû au fait que chacun est tenu en qualité de débiteur principal par une obligation principale au total, mais parce que le faisceau d'obligations qui en découle combine des obligations principales et des obligations de garantie accessoires aux premières. Souvent, les coobligés se garantissent réciproquement et sont tenus a la fois par une obligation principale pour une fraction de la dette globale et par une obligation de garantie pour le surplus. Chacun agit pour partie à titre de débiteur principal et pour partie à titre de garant des autres codébiteurs. Par ailleurs, l'obligation solidaire et l'obligation in solidum connaissent d'autres schémas explicatifs : la garantie simple, la garantie mutuelle au second degré ou la garantie simple appliquée à une garantie mutuelle.

Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. Ants emerged during the Cretaceous Period more than 100 million years ago (Grimaldi & Engel 2005; Perrichot et al. 2008) and diversified independently on different landmasses following the Early Cretaceous fragmentation of Pangaea (Grimaldi & Agosti 2000). Today, ants represent one of the most ecologically successful groups globally (Wilson 1987), and their diversity far exceeds that of other social insects (Hölldobler & Wilson 1990). Currently 21 subfamilies, 305 genera and 12465 recorded ant species exist (Bolton 2012). Ants occur in almost all terrestrial habitats (Brown 2000) and are not uniformly distributed across regions, biomes and continents. As with all other taxa, historical abiotic factors have played a major role in their diversification and biogeographic structure (Tolley et al. 2006), including climatic changes (Holldobler & Wilson 1990) and the necessity to adapt to new environmental conditions (Tolley et al. 2006). Many global areas still lack data on regional biodiversity and the historical processes that may have shaped it. This is particularly so for southern Africa where the ant fauna is still relatively poorly known (Robertson 2000) and where there have been no published biogeographic analyses for any ant taxon. There is a highly endemic ant fauna that has evolved in the dry regions of southern Africa, which shows unique adaptations to the extreme thermal niches of these regions. For example, ants in the genus Ocymyrmex have adapted to forage on barren ground at temperatures as high as 67 ºC, when most insects and other arthropods are unable to survive (Marsh 1985). Ocymyrmex have long legs and usually hold the head, thorax and gaster high above the substrate, which helps with body temperature regulation. These ants are most active at the hottest time of the day and they move very rapidly. For example, O. barbiger has been observed running at speeds of 23 m/min (Marsh, 1985). In some ant species such extreme temperatures may limit foraging activity (Ward, 2007) but, in the case of Ocymyrmex, adaptations to this extreme thermal niche allowed exploitation of resources (dead and heat stressed arthropods). Moreover, these ants have subterranean nests that are ideal to escape environmental extremes and to move their brood deeply under the ground (Marsh, 1985). The distribution of some ant taxa in these dry regions closely reflects borders between particular biomes. For instance, in South Africa the ponerine ant, Pachycondyla hottentota, and the sugar ant, Camponotus storeatus, follow the borders of the Nama and Succulent Karoo biomes respectively (Robertson 2000). In the light of this background the overall objective of this study is to revise the taxonomy and determine the historical drivers of diversification in an important group of arid-adapted ants, the Tetramorium solidum-group, which is mainly restricted to dry semi-desert areas in southern Africa. Members of the Tetramorium solidum-group are commonly encountered seed harvesters yet despite their apparent ecological importance, their taxonomy and biogeography remains largely unresolved. Thirty years elapsed since the last revision of the group by Bolton (1980) and since, ant surveys have considerably expanded the material available for study and provide an opportunity for a fresh perspective on this group. The specific aims of this project were twofold: 1) to revise the species of the Tetramorium solidum-group; and 2) to explore the phylogenetic relationships among members of the group and the bioclimatic factors restricting their current distributional ranges in southern Africa. My study is timely, as to date no attempt has been made to unravel the history of arid-adapted ant diversification in southern Africa. Such information is much needed for identifying areas of high species diversity and endemism (Azuma et al. 2006) and prioritizing areas for conservation (Faith 1992). The thesis consists of three chapters. In chapter one I use morphological characters to review the current taxonomy of the Tetramorium solidum-group. From these data I have compiled an updated identification key for the group and described five new species. In chapter two I have constructed a fossil-calibrated dated phylogeny for Tetramorium solidum-group species in order to explore the historical processes that may have contributed in structuring the current distribution patterns and endemism within and among the species of the group. In this chapter I also explore bioclimatic factors that may restrict the current distribution of members on the Tetramorium solidum-group, using correlative bioclimatic modeling approaches. Bien que la solidarité en droit civil français, qui puise ses origines en droit romain, ait été importée dans les Codes civils coloniaux du Vietnam, elle n'est pas adoptée par le droit civil moderne du Vietnam. L'obligation solidaire présentée par le droit civil vietnamien est particulièrement originale. Elle s'écarte du droit civil français ainsi que du droit romano-germanique. Il existe une équivalence fonctionnelle entre l'obligation solidaire en droit vietnamien et la solidarité en droit français. La principale différence est l'absence des effets secondaires de l'obligation solidaire en droit civil vietnamien. Quant à l'obligation in solidum en droit civil français, celle-ci a un équivalent fonctionnel dans la responsabilité solidaire en droit civil vietnamien. Cependant, si l'obligation in solidum en droit civil français présente à la fois une pluralité de sources et une unité de source, la responsabilité solidaire en droit civil vietnamien ne connait qu'une unité de source. La mondialisation du droit et le vent de réformes du droit des obligations en Europe au sein de laquelle la France se trouve, apportent une chance pour que l'obligation solidaire en droit civil du Vietnam puisse s'approcher de la solidarité du droit civil occidental en général et du droit civil français en particulier The obligation solidaire in French civil law took its origins from Roman law. This law was imported to Colonial Civil Codes of Vietnam, however it was not adopted by the modern civil law of Vietnam. The joint and several obligation presented by the Vietnamese civil law is original. It diverges from the French civil and Romano-Germanic law. The joint and several obligation in Vietnamese private law is functional equivalence to the obligation solidaire in French private law. The main difference is the absence of the secondary effects on the joint and several obligation in Vietnamese civil law. Due to the obligation jointly and severally in French civil law, it has a functional joint and several liability in Vietnamese civil law equivalent. However, if the obligation in solidum in French civil law has both a plurality of sources and a source unit; joint and several liability in Vietnamese civil law recognizes a source unit. The trend of globalization of law and selling reform of contract law in Europe in which France finds itself, provide an opportunity for the joint and several liability in civil law of Vietnam can approach the solidarity of civil law West in general and the French civil law in particular

L’objectif de la thèse est de réévaluer de façon globale la pertinence et la cohérence de la construction légale et jurisprudentielle actuelle organisant les recours dans les chaînes translatives de propriété. En dépit de contributions doctrinales nombreuses, les solutions se sont accumulées sans que leur articulation soit précisément examinée. L’enjeu de cet examen est d’autant plus important que le contexte général a changé (responsabilité du fait des produits, remise en cause des actions contractuelles, projets de réforme du droit de la responsabilité). L’étude est organisée autour de deux types de dommages : le dommage strictement contractuel et le dommage non strictement contractuel. La première partie évalue le droit positif et ses incertitudes (fondement de l’action directe, opposabilité des clauses de responsabilité au sous-acquéreur, recours en contribution etc.), au regard du manquement strictement contractuel (atteinte à l’utilité du contrat). La seconde partie permet de mettre en lumière les difficultés d’articulation des diverses actions désignées pour réparer le dommage non strictement contractuel, ces difficultés nous conduisant à nous interroger sur la nature de la responsabilité qui doit présider, dans les chaînes translatives de propriété, à la réparation des atteintes au contractant. L’ensemble de ces questions permet enﬁn d’identiﬁer les grands critères et les logiques communes de répartition des responsabilités dans les chaînes translatives de propriété The purpose of this thesis is to reexamine on a global scale the adequacy and consistency of the current jurisprudential and legal framework related to the contract chains’ liability cases. Despite a large number of doctrinal contributions, the solutions have indeed been aggregated without any underlying logical implication being further investigated. This type of considerations is becoming all the more impactful that the legal environment has evolved. The goal of the ﬁrst part is to assess the current state of the law and its uncertainties (the direct action ground, enforceability of limitation clause to consumer, contribution to the debt among co-debtors) when it comes to the pure contractual injury, that is when the usefulness of the contract is to be jeopardized. The second part is focuses on how it is hard to articulate the different actions in order to repair non-pure contractual injury. The assessment of those difﬁculties will bring us to wonder which nature of liability should prevail to repair injuries within property chains. Finally, answering those questions will lead us to identify the major criteria and the common rationales used to spread liability within property chains

Abstract:

L’un des enjeux pour le développement des batteries tout-solide est d’augmenter la conductivité ionique des électrolytes solides. Le sujet de la thèse porte sur l’étude de deux types de matériaux d’électrolytes solides inorganiques cristallins: les Grenat Li7- 3xAlxLa3Zr2O12 (LLAZO) et les Nasicon Li1.15- 2xMgxZr1.85Y0.15(PO4)3 (LMZYPO). L’objectif de cette étude est de comprendre dans quelle mesure les propriétés conductrices des matériaux étudiés sont impactées par des modifications structurales générées soit par un procédé de traitement particulier, soit par une modification de la composition chimique, et ce grâce au croisement des données structurales acquises par diffraction des rayons X (DRX) et Résonance Magnétique Nucléaire (RMN) MAS avec des données de dynamique des ions déduites de mesures de RMN en température et de spectroscopie d’impédance électrochimique (SIE).Les poudres ont été synthétisées après optimisation des traitements thermiques par méthode solide-solide ou solgel. La densification des pastilles utilisées pour les mesures de conductivité ionique par SIE a été réalisée par la technique de frittage Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS).Dans le cas des grenats LLAZO, l’originalité de notre travail est d’avoir montré qu’un traitement de frittage par SPS, au-delà de la densification attendue des pastilles, engendre également des modifications structurales qui ont des conséquences directes sur la mobilité des ions lithium dans le matériau et par conséquent sur la conductivité ionique. Une augmentation franche de la dynamique microscopique des ions lithium après frittage par SPS a en effet été observée par des mesures en température de RMN de 7Li et le suivi des constantes de relaxation.La deuxième partie de l’étude constitue un travail exploratoire sur la substitution de Li+ par Mg2+ dans LMZYPO. Nous avons ainsi étudié les propriétés de conduction ionique de ces composés mixtes Li/Mg, en parallèle d’un examen minutieux des phases cristallines formées. Nous avons notamment montré que la présence de Mg2+ favorise la formation des phases β’ (P21/n) et β (Pbna) moins conductrices ce qui explique la diminution de la conductivité ionique avec le taux de substitution de Li+ par Mg2+ observée dans ces matériaux de type Nasicon.Nos travaux soulignent donc l’importance primordiale des effets de structure sur les propriétés de matériaux d’électrolytes solides de type céramique One of the issues for the development of all-solid-state batteries is to increase the ionic conductivity of solid electrolytes. The thesis work focuses on two types of materials as crystalline inorganic solid electrolytes: a Garnet Li7-3xAlxLa3Zr2O12 (LLAZO) and a Nasicon Li1.15-2xMgxZr1.85Y0.15(PO4)3 (LMZYPO). The objective of this study is to understand to what extent the conduction properties of the studied materials are impacted by structural modifications generated either by a particular treatment process, or by a modification of the chemical composition. Structural data acquired by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Magic Angle Spinning (MAS) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) were then crossed with ions dynamics data deduced from NMR measurements at variable temperature and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).The powders were synthesized after optimizing thermal treatments using solid-solid or sol-gel methods. Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) technique was used for the densification of the pellets used for ionic conductivity measurements by EIS.In the case of garnets LLAZO, the originality of our work is to have shown that a SPS sintering treatment, beyond the expected pellets densification, also generates structural modifications having direct consequences on the lithium ions mobility in the material and therefore on the ionic conductivity. A clear increase of the lithium ions microscopic dynamics after SPS sintering was indeed observed by variable temperature 7Li NMR measurements and the monitoring of the relaxation times.The second part of the study provides an exploratory work on the substitution of Li+ by Mg2+ in LMZYPO. We studied the ionic conduction properties of these mixed Li/Mg compounds, in parallel with a fine examination of the crystalline phases formed. We have showed in particular that the presence of Mg2+ favors the formation of the less conductive β’ (P21/n) and β (Pbna) phases, which explains the decrease of the ionic conductivity with the substitution level of Li+ by Mg2+ observed in these Nasicon type materials.Our work therefore highlights the crucial importance of structural effects on the conduction properties of ceramic solid electrolyte materials

Abstract:

Ce travail porte sur la synthèse, la mise en forme et la caractérisation desolutions solides de type tysonite RE1-xMxF3-x (RE = La, Sm, Ce et M = Ba, Ca, Sr). Dans unpremier temps, une démarche d’étude rigoureuse est mise en place pour la solution solide ditede référence, La1-xBaxF3-x. Les synthèses menées à l’état solide aboutissent à une maîtrise dela composition chimique et à l'établissement de lois de variations des paramètres structuraux.Une meilleure compréhension de l’influence de la structure sur la mobilité des ions F- estégalement acquise. L’influence du frittage dans l’obtention de bonnes valeurs de conductivitéionique est également à souligner. Dans un second temps, les effets de la nanostructurationpar mécanobroyage sur les propriétés de conductivité sont évalués. L’utilisation de laméthodologie des plans d’expériences mène à la mise au point des réglages optimums debroyage. In a first part, onemeticulous approach has been set up for La1-xBaxF3-x solid solution, chosen as a reference.The solid-state synthesis of these materials led to a better knowledge of their chemicalcomposition (Vegard’s laws) and of the structure-ionic mobility correlations. The impact ofthe sintering process on the ionic conductivity is also highlighted. In a second part, the effectsof the nanostructuration conducted by ball-milling of the microcrystalline samples areevaluated. The use of the Design of Experiments methodology led to identify the optimummilling conditions. It appears that the synthesis of electrolytes can be sped- and scaled-up,while keeping high ionic conductivity properties. At last, this approach is applied on othertysonite-type solid solutions, to look for the best electrolyte. The Ce/Sr and Sm/Casubstitutions generate very promising ionic conductors but not really (electro)chemicallystable compounds. A compromise has been found with the choice of the La1-xSrxF3-x solidsolution as the FIB electrolyte for the electrochemical performances tests, regarding its higherchemical stability

L’alliage germanium-étain est un semiconducteur qui suscite une grande attention en raison de ses propriétés électriques et optiques. L’incorporation de Sn dans le germanium permet d’ajuster la largeur de bande interdite (gap) et d’améliorer la mobilité des électrons et des trous, et pour une quantité suffisante d’étain, le matériau passe d’un gap indirect à direct. Cet alliage est versatile parce qu’il peut être intégré d’une façon monolithique sur le Si, c’est ce qui en fait un matériau idéal dans les domaines de l'optoélectronique à base de silicium. Cette thèse est sur la fabrication et la caractérisation de nanofils cristallins Ge1-xSnx à haute concentration en Sn. Des nouvelles stratégies ont été employées pour fabriquer de nombreux types de nanofils GeSn. Les résultats ont été expliqués en fonction des modèles cinétiques existants. Un nouveau mécanisme de croissance y est décrit: le mécanisme solide-solide-solide – SSS. Il consiste à faire croître des nanofils de GeSn dans le plan du substrat à l’aide de catalyseurs d’étain à une température inférieure au point de fusion de Sn. Quatre modèles de transport de masse sont proposés pour le mécanisme de croissance du SSS. Diverses caractérisations (par exemple TEM et APT) ont été effectuées pour étudier les propriétés physiques, et chimiques des nanofils Germanium-Tin alloy is a unique class semiconductor gaining a strong attention because of its significant electrical and optical properties. Sn incorporation in Ge allows straightforward band-gap engineering enabling to enhance the electron and hole mobilities, and for a sufficient Sn amount an indirect-to-direct band-gap transition occurs. Its versatility rises due the possible monolithic integration on Si-platforms making it an ideal material in domains of optoelectronics, and high speed electronic devices. This thesis has focused on the fabrication and characterization of crystalline Ge1-xSnx nanowires with high Sn concentrations. New strategies were designed to fabricate many types of GeSn nanowires. The results have been explained as function of the existing kinetic models. A new growth mechanism was reported (i.e. Solid-Solid-Solid mechanism – SSS), it consists of growing in-plane GeSn nanowires using Sn catalysts below the melting point of Sn. Four mass transport models were proposed for the SSS growth mechanism. Various characterizations (e.g. TEM and APT) were done to investigate the physical and chemical properties of the obtained nanowires

Pour augmenter la densité d’énergie dans les générateurs électrochimiques, deux leviers sont habituellement étudiés : la capacité et le potentiel des matériaux d’électrodes. L’utilisation de lithium (Li) métal comme matériau d’électrode négative répond à ces enjeux puisqu’il présente une très grande capacité gravimétrique (3860 mAh/g) et un potentiel très bas (-3.04 V vs. SHE). Malheureusement, de nombreux phénomènes sont délétères au bon fonctionnement de cette négative idéale, comme la croissance de lithium dendritique au cours du cyclage qui entraine des fins de vie prématurées et des problèmes de sécurité. Une solution est de travailler avec des électrolytes solides, en lieu et place des électrolytes liquides organiques actuels des batteries Li-ion. Ainsi, la recherche se concentre sur le développement de nombreux matériaux d’électrolytes solides, bons conducteurs ionique, stables à bas et haut potentiels, peu coûteux, recyclables, etc. Malgré de grandes avancées que ce soit dans le domaine des électrolytes céramiques ou polymères (voire même des composites des deux), aucun matériau ne semble s’imposer pour l’heure [1].Dans ce contexte, un nouveau concept de membrane hybride polymère/céramique est étudié pour son intégration en batterie au Li métal [2][3]. Nous avons réalisé, par un procédé en voie fondu économique, sans solvant, et aisément extrapolable à l’échelle industrielle, un séparateur constitué d’une monocouche de grains d’électrolyte céramique Li1,3Al0,3Ti1,7(PO4)3 (LATP) jointoyée par un polymère (figure 1.a.). Les grains de LATP percolant de part et d’autre de la membrane apportent la conductivité aux ions Li+ tandis que le polymère à base de Poly(éthylène) assure la tenue mécanique, l’étanchéité aux solvants et sels de lithium, et l’isolation électrique. Le concept de ces membranes est de pouvoir optimiser l’anolyte et le catholyte indépendamment. La conductivité de telles membranes a été étudiée en fonction du pourcentage volumique de LATP (figure 1.b.) et atteint 0,491 mS/cm, à température ambiante, pour une membrane à 50%vol. De plus, le transfert de charge ionique à travers une cellule anolyte / membrane / catholyte a été étudiée par impédance électrochimique. The use of Li metal as a negative electrode is undoubtedly an appropriate solution to address these challenges since it has the highest gravimetric capacity (3860mAh/g) and very low reducing potential (-3.04 V vs. Standard Hydrogen Electrode). However, a couple of harmful phenomena prevent from using this ideal negative electrode, such as the dendritic growth during the electrodeposition of Lithium metal when a conventional organic liquid electrolyte is used. As a result, the research has been focusing on the development of numerous solid-state electrolytes (SSE) materials, having high Li+ ionic conductivity, high Li+ transport number, large electrochemical stability window, low cost, recyclable. Despite of breakthroughs for both ceramics or polymers fields (and even composites of both), no room temperature SSE has been developed at industrial scale so far [1].In that context, a new concept [2] of composite polymer/ceramic membrane is studied to be implemented within a Lithium Metal battery. It consists of an electrolytic separator where the Li1.3Al0,3Ti1,7(PO4)3 (LATP) ceramic forms one mono layer of monocrystalline and monodispersed grains bonded with a Poly(ethylene)-based matrix. The LATP grains are the Li+ conducting media allowing the Li+ percolation from one side to another while the Poly(ethylene)-based matrix which is ionically and electronically insulating, and, above all, impermeable to most of conventional Li-ion batteries solvents and Li salts, ensuring both the membrane tightening and very good flexibility (figure 1.a.). Herein, this composite membrane is elaborated via a low cost, solvent free process thanks to extrusion and calendering which can be industrially upscaled unlike the very complex and multistep processes suggested in the literature so far [2,3]. The microstructure of the composite separators was characterized by SEM and X-ray Tomography imaging to better understand the influences of the ceramic, the polymer type, and the elaboration process parameters. The Li+ ionic conductivity of the composite membranes as a function of the ceramic content have been studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and a high conductivity of 0.49 mS/cm has been measured at 25°C (50vol% LATP, figure 1.b.). Acting as a chemical barrier, this composite membrane allows the optimization of electrolyte chemistries at both the anode side and the cathode sides. Le but de ce travail est d'etudier les interactions solide-liquide afin de verifier si l'inversion de mouillabilite de certaines roches reservoirs de petrole peut etre provoquee par des phenomenes d'adsorption. Les experiences, menees principalement par calorimetrie d'immersion, montrent que la pyridine est susceptible de concurrencer l'eau a la surface des oxydes mineraux, laissant a penser que des molecules homologues, pourvues d'une partie hydrophobe, sont aptes a faire passer ces solides d'un etat hydrophile a un etat hydrophobe. Dans le meme temps, ces experiences d'immersion permettent egalement de constater que les oxydes utilises, a savoir les kaolinites et les illites, presentent des comportements semblables vis a vis des divers solvants employes. Enfin, en dernier lieu, les resultats experimentaux donnent la possibilite de calculer l'energie libre de surface des solides par l'intermediaire de modeles schematisant les interactions interfaciales. Il apparait ainsi que la calorimetrie d'immersion est l'outil approprie pour l'etude des solides de haute energie

Le secteur de la méthanisation à la ferme ou territoriale connait un fort développement, entrainant la production de grandes quantités de digestats. Si la fraction solide de ces digestats est généralement utilisée en tant qu’amendement organique, la fraction liquide peut être valorisée par la récupération des éléments minéraux bien que la présence de composés organiques pose des problèmes de traitement et d’élimination. Les objectifs de cette thèse sont i) de caractériser la fraction liquide des digestats et donner des premiers éléments pour leur futur traitement et ii) d’expliquer la variabilité des composés résiduels présents dans cette fraction liquide en relation avec l’origine des substrats, les paramètres du procédé de méthanisation et le type de séparation solide/liquide. Dans une première partie, nous avons caractérisé de manière détaillée onze digestats issus d’installations industrielles de co-digestion. Le fractionnement par neuf filtrations successives de la fraction liquide des digestats a permis de quantifier la contribution des matières en suspension, des colloïdes grossiers et fins et des matières dissoutes aux différents paramètres physico-chimiques et biologiques. Il a été montré la faible biodégradabilité aérobie des composés organiques dont la majeure partie se trouve dans la matière en suspension (> 1,2 µm). Pour élargir la base de données, nous avons caractérisé dix-huit digestats supplémentaires et un digestat de boues de station d’épuration dont les fractions liquides ont été fractionnées par deux filtrations successives (1,2 μm et 1 kDa). L’analyse en composantes principales, la classification hiérarchique et la matrice de corrélation réalisées sur l’ensemble des 30 digestats ont mis en avant l’impact majeur des techniques de séparation solide/liquide sur la composition de la fraction liquide des digestats. Dans le groupe des techniques de séparation hautement performantes, des sous-groupes ont permis de distinguer les digestats à base de boues d’épuration, ceux à base de lisiers porcins et ceux issus de procédés piston thermophiles. Dans le groupe des procédés de séparation à faible performance, les teneurs en DCO et matières sèches de la fraction liquide des digestats ont été corrélées aux teneurs en cultures énergétiques et fumiers bovins dans l’alimentation. Finalement, pour l’ensemble des digestats, le paramètre SUVA, lié à la teneur en matière aromatique et à la stabilisation des composés, a été corrélé au temps de séjour des digesteurs. Pour comprendre l’origine des composés résiduels observés dans la fraction liquide des digestats issus de la co-digestion avec de fortes proportions de fumier bovin, quatre réacteurs CSTR alimentés avec respectivement de la paille de blé, de la bouse de vache et du fumier ont été conduits pendant 48 semaines. Les performances de méthanisation ont mis en évidence le caractère âgé du fumier qui avait été partiellement dégradé pendant le stockage à la ferme. Ainsi la fraction liquide du digestat du fumier a présenté les plus fortes concentrations en composés organiques qui en outre présentaient une complexité, mesurée par fluorimétrie 3D, plus élevée que les autres substrats. La fraction liquide du digestat issue de la méthanisation de la paille a révélé les plus fortes proportions de DCO dans les fractions colloïdales et dissoutes. La faible biodégradabilité des composés organiques et leur forte proportion dans les matières en suspension suggèrent le développement de procédés physico-chimiques de séparation tels que la coagulation pour le traitement de la fraction liquide des digestats Agricultural and centralized biogas plants are facing a fast development, leading to the production of huge amounts of digestates. Whereas the solid fraction of digestates is used as fertilizer, the liquid fraction can be valorized by the recovery of mineral materials, although the presence of organic compounds may be problematic for the treatment and disposal of this effluent. The objectives of this thesis are: i) to characterize the liquid fraction of digestates and to provide guidelines for its further treatment, ii) to explain the variability of residual compounds in the liquid fraction of digestates in relation with substrate origin, process parameters and the type of solid-liquid separation. In a first part, eleven digestates from full scale codigestion plants were thoroughly characterized. Their liquid fractions were fractionated by nine successive filtrations, which allowed quantifying the contribution of suspended particles, coarse and fine colloids and dissolved matter on several physico-chemical and biological parameters. Organic compounds were mainly found in suspended particles (> 1.2 µm) and presented low aerobic biodegradability. To enlarge the data base, eighteen more digestates from codigestion and one digestate from waste activated sludge were characterized; their liquid fractions were fractionated by two successive filtrations (1.2 μm and 1 kDa). Principal component analysis, hierarchical clustering analysis and correlation matrix carried out on the 30 digestates set, highlighted the major impact of the solid-liquid separation process on the composition of the liquid fraction of digestates. In the high performance separation process group, subgroups allowed separating digestates from sewage sludge, digestates from pig manure and digestates from plug-flow thermophilic processes. In the low performance separation process group, COD and total solids concentration in the liquid fraction of digestates were correlated to the percentage of energy crops and cow manure in the feed. Finally, SUVA parameter which accounts for aromatic compounds content and the stabilization of organic matter, was correlated to the retention time in digester for the whole digestates set. To understand the origin of residual compounds in the liquid fraction of digestates from co-digestion of high proportions of cattle manure, four CSTR reactors fed with wheat straw, cow dung and cow manure were operated for 48 weeks. Anaerobic digestion performances showed that cow manure had undergone some aerobic degradation during its storage at the farm. Therefore, the liquid fraction of manure digestate had the highest concentrations in organic compounds. In addition, these organic compounds had the highest complexity measured by 3D fluorimetry. The low biodegradability of organic compounds and their high percentage in suspended particles suggest the development of physico-chemical separation process such as coagulation for the treatment of the liquid fraction of digestates

Les batteries Li-ion traditionnelles utilisent des électrolytes liquides organiques, qui sont sensibles aux températures élevées en raison de leur faible point d'éclair et de leur grande volatilité. Par conséquent, le remplacement des électrolytes liquides par des électrolytes solides devient l'un des points chauds de la recherche pour les batteries de stockage d'énergie chimique de la prochaine génération. Dans cette thèse, une méthode en phase liquide utilisant LiEt3BH ou Li-Naph comme matières premières est inventée pour synthétiser des sol précurseurs Li3PS4 et obtenir des nanoparticules Li3PS4 monodispersées. Cette thèse développe également un sol Li3PS4 présentant une excellente compatibilité avec les anodes de Li, de sorte qu'une couche protectrice Li3PS4 peut être déposée sur le Li par spin-coating du sol. En conséquence, les cellules symétriques au lithium avec des électrodes au lithium modifiées par Li3PS4 peuvent être cyclées de manière stable pendant 800 h à 1 mA cm-2. Pour améliorer encore la stabilité du cycle de l'anode Li sous une densité de courant extrêmement élevée, une structure à trois couches Ag/Li-LiF-PEO (alliage, inorganique et organique) est proposée. La structure Ag/Li-LiF-PEO améliore la stabilité de cyclage des anodes Li sous une densité de courant extrêmement élevée, ce qui est démontré dans les batteries symétriques au lithium et les batteries Li//LFP. À une densité de courant ultra-élevée de 20 mA cm-2, la cellule symétrique au lithium survit à un test de 1 450 cycles. Cette étude peut contribuer au développement de batteries Li métal à haute performance Traditional Li-ion batteries use organic liquid electrolytes, which are susceptible to high temperatures due to their low flash point and high volatility. Therefore, it becomes one of the research hotspots for next generation chemical energy storage batteries to replace liquid electrolytes with solid electrolytes. In this thesis, a liquid-phase method using LiEt3BH or Li-Naph as raw materials is invented to synthesize Li3PS4 precursor sol and to obtain monodispersed Li3PS4 nanoparticles. This thesis also develops Li3PS4 sol exhibiting excellent compatibility with Li anodes, so that a Li3PS4 protective layer can be coated on Li by spin-coating of the sol. As a result, the lithium symmetrical cells with Li3PS4-modified lithium electrodes can be cycled stably for 800 h at 1 mA cm−2. To further improve the cycling stability of the Li anode under an extremely high current density, a Ag/Li-LiF-PEO (alloy, inorganic and organic) three-layer structure is proposed. The Ag/Li-LiF-PEO structure enhances the cycling stability of Li anodes under ultrahigh current density, which is demonstrated in lithium symmetrical batteries and Li//LFP batteries. At an ultrahigh current density of 20 mA cm-2, the lithium symmetrical cell survives a 1450-cycle test. This study may contribute to the development of high-performance Li metal batteries

Para o teste de diluições os dejetos foram diluídos em água nas proporções: 1:4, 1:5, 1:6, 1:7 e 1:8 (kg de dejeto por kg de água) e adotado o processo físico de peneiramento (peneiras com malhas quadradas de 0,75, 1,00 e 1,50 mm) para separação dos sólidos. Para o ensaio de biodigestão anaeróbia (biodigestores tipo batelada e semi-contínuos) a separação dos sólidos foi feita com peneira de malha de 1mm e substratos com cerca de 4% de sólidos totais. Teste de diluição: embora os resultados tenham variado entre os tipos de dejeto, de modo geral a peneira de malha 1,50 mm permitiu a maior passagem de sólidos. Mas em relação a diluição cada tipo de dejeto apresentou uma resposta. Ensaio de biodigestão anaeróbia (biodigestores tipo batelada): embora para cada dejeto o processo de biodigestão anaeróbia tenha tido uma resposta diferente, de modo geral a separação de sólidos proporcionou melhor qualidade de biogás, porém não foi eficiente para aumentar o potencial de produção de biogás e reduzir sólidos do substrato. Ensaio de biodigestão anaeróbia (biodigestores do tipo semi-contínuo): para os dejetos utilizados (aves de postura e bovinos de leite) a separação de sólidos proporcionou melhor qualidade de biogás, menor produção de biogás, maior redução de sólidos e, para os potenciais de produção de biogás os resultados foram quase sempre positivos. Conclui-se que para o teste de diluição e peneiras os resultados não permitiram uma conclusão geral para todos os dejetos avaliados, pois cada um apresentou características individuais e, para a ... This trial aimed to evaluate the best dilution for pig, laying hens, sheep, goats, beef cattle and dairy cattle manure to supply digesters, as well as the influence of the solids separation in those same wastes on the production and quality of biogas, on the potential of biogas production and solids reduction. For the dilution test the wastes were diluted with water in the proportions 1:4, 1:5, 1:6, 1:7 and 1:8 (kg of manure per kg of water) and adopted the physical process of screening (sieve with square meshes of 0.75, 1.00 and 1.50 mm) for separation of solids. When tested for anaerobic digestion (batch and semi-continuous digesters) separation of solids was made with 1 mm mesh sieve and substrates of about 4% total solids. Dilution test: although the results varied among the types of manure, generally a 1.50 mm mesh sieve allowed greater flow of solids. But in relation to the dilution used each type of waste had a different response. Abstract:

The use of solid-state NMR and DFT calculations to study Y₂Sn[subscript(x)]Ti[subscript(2-x)]O₇, Y₂Sn[subscript(x)]Zr[subscript(2-x)]O₇ and Y₂Ti[subscript(x)]Zr[subscript(2-x)]O₇, materials with applications for the safe encapsulation of radioactive actinides is investigated. As a result of cation or anion disorder in these materials, NMR spectra are often complex and difficult to interpret. Therefore, an investigation using a range of NMR active nuclei and measurement of a variety of NMR parameters (isotropic chemical shift, δ[subscript(iso)]; span, Ω and quadrupolar coupling, C[subscript(Q)]) were used to provide a full and detailed picture of each material. The measurement of Ω in these disordered compounds with multiple resonances in the NMR spectra, required the use of 2D CSA-amplified PASS (CAPASS) experiments to enable the separation of each of the spinning sideband manifolds. An experimental assessment of the CAPASS experiment showed that although low ν₁/Ω[subscript(Hz)] ratios (as found in ⁸⁹Y NMR) resulted in distortions in the spectra obtained, a modified fitting procedure could be utilised to compensate for this fact, which allowed the accurate measurement of Ω. Despite the difficulties in acquiring the ⁸⁹Y NMR spectra, they were found to be the most informative of the NMR-active nuclei available. ¹¹⁹Sn NMR spectra, although much easier to acquire than ⁸⁹Y, were more complex and harder to analyse, owing to the overlapping resonances. Therefore, ¹¹⁹Sn NMR could only be used to confirm or support the results obtained using ⁸⁹Y NMR. Although ¹⁷O NMR was found to be useful, a full study could not be implemented due to the lack of ¹⁷O enriched samples; an area where future investigation may prove fruitful. Finally, [superscript(47/49)]Ti and ⁹¹Zr NMR spectra were found to be the most difficult to acquire due to their low receptivities and the quadrupolar broadened lineshapes, and as a result, little additional information was obtained. As a result of this analysis, for the Y₂Sn[subscript(x)]Ti[subscript(2-x)]O₇ pyrochlore solid solution, using primarily ⁸⁹Y δ[subscript(iso)] and Ω, and additionally confirmed with ¹¹⁹Sn δ[subscript(iso)], it was found that the Sn and Ti cations were randomly ordered throughout the B-sites. Additionally, ⁸⁹Y Ω could be used to obtain approximate Y-O[subscript(48f)] and Y-O[subscript(8b)] bond lengths for each type of Y environment. The study of Y₂Sn[subscript(x)]Zr[subscript(2-x)]O₇ using ⁸⁹Y NMR showed that although the end members were single phase, pyrochlore (Y₂Sn₂O₇) or defect fluorite (Y₂Zr₂O₇), the intermediate compositions were mostly two phase mixtures, consisting of an ordered pyrochlore (with an average formula of Y₂Sn₁.₈Zr₀.₂O₇) and a disordered phase, where the proportions of the pyrochlore and disordered phases decreased and increased, respectively, with the Zr content. Additionally, although the coordination states of the Y and Sn cations were easily determined using ⁸⁹Y and ¹¹⁹Sn NMR, respectively, the coordination states of the Zr cations could not be confirmed directly by ⁹¹Zr NMR. However, using indirect analysis from results obtained with ⁸⁹Y and ¹¹⁹Sn NMR, it was determined that 6 coordinate Zr was present in each composition, and it was always present in a greater proportion than 8 coordinate Zr. Finally, although ⁸⁹Y NMR spectra of Y₂Ti[subscript(x)]Zr[subscript(2-x)]O₇ were extremely difficult to analyse, it was tentatively proposed that they could be similar to Y₂Sn[subscript(x)]Zr[subscript(2-x)]O₇ due to some similarities observed between the spectra.

Abstract:

Optical absorption and laser selective excitation (l.s.e.) spectroscopy have been used to study Er³⁺ ions in the CsCdBr₃ and hydrogenated CaF₂ and SrF₂ crystalline lattices. Sixteen hydrogenic charge compensation sites for both the H- and D- isotopes were found in CaF₂:0.05%Er³⁺, and nine new D- ion sites in SrF₂ :0.05%Er3³⁺. The relative occurrence of these sites can be controlled by variation of the duration of hydrogenation. For SrF₂:Er³⁺, this results in a change of the principal D- ion charge compensation arrangement. Classification of local-mode vibronic fluorescence transitions and consideration of isotope shifts of electronic transitions enabled the assignment of model configurations to several sites. Most hydrogenic sites were classified into one of two distinct families. A new effect, reversible polarised bleaching was observed, whereby hydrogenic ion migration in Er³⁺ ion site configurations can be controlled by l.s.e. with polarised light in oriented crystals. One hydrogenic site was found to consist of two photo-induced interconvertible components. Five new fluoride ion sites in CaF₂:Er³⁺ and nine in SrF₂:Er³⁺ were also determined. For <100> and <111> oriented crystals, the fluorescence spectra of several sites exhibited well defined polarisation which may be used to determine the Er³⁺ ion symmetry. Trigonal symmetry of the F- B site of CaF₂:Er³⁺ was confirmed by this means. Crystal field analysis of tetragonal and trigonal symmetry sites is also reported. An infra-red study revealed local mode lines of seven new sites in hydrogenated CaF₂:Er³⁺ and enabled correlation of some sites to those observed in the optical spectra. Reduction of Er³⁺ ions by the short range beta decay of tritium in the lattice was identified by local mode absorption. Erbium ions in CsCdBr₃ exhibited efficient upconverted fluorescence consistent with the formation of a dominant dimer site. Detailed spectroscopy resulted in the assignment of energy levels from twelve groups of transitions. Several of these transitions, studied by absorption and l.s.e., were found to consist of two components.

The technique of laser selective excitation has been used to study the spectra of 23 Ho³⁺centres present in CaF₂ and SrF₂ crystals, in mixed Ca₀.₉₉Sr₀.₀₁F₂ and Ca₀.₉₉Ba₀.₀₁F₂ crystals and in CsCdBr₃ crystals. The polarisation of the fluorescence from < 100> and < 111> oriented crystals has been used to assign specific Ho³⁺ site symmetries to the various centres and to label the crystal-field energy levels of each centre by their group irreps. The two principal Ho³⁺ centres (A and B) observed in both CaF2:Ho³⁺and SrF2:Ho³⁺ crystals have been shown to be of C₄ᵥ and C₃ᵥ symmetry respectively. The four new centres identified in Ca₀.₉₉Sr₀.₀₁F₂:Ho3³⁺ and Ca₀.₉₉Ba₀.₀₁F₂:Ho³⁺ crystals, are derived from the parent CaF₂ C₄ᵥ symmetry (A) centre by an on-axis and an off-axis placement of a dopant cation, Sr²⁺+ or Ba²⁺, in the vicinity of the Ho³⁺ - F- pair. The three additional centres found in SrF₂:Ho³⁺ crystals are from similar Ca²⁺and Ba²⁺ substitutions in the SrF₂ lattice. Seven centres associated with n- charge compensation were observed in deuterated CaF₂:Ho³⁺ and SrF₂:Ho³⁺ crystals, with no C₄ᵥ symmetry centre being apparent. For the CsCdBr3:Ho³⁺ system, spectra of the principal dimer centre and three other minority centres are reported. Strong upconversion fluorescence was observed for the principal dimer centre, enabling crystal-field energy levels for 18 Ho³⁺ multiplets to be determined. Low symmetry crystal-field splittings and pair splittings were observed on some of the sharper transitions. Crystal-field analyses performed for all the C₄ᵥ and C₃ᵥ symmetry centres in CaF2:Ho³⁺, SrF2:Ho³⁺ and CsCdBr3:Ho³⁺ crystals are reported and the resulting crystal-field parameters discussed. Fluorescence lifetimes determined for the major Ho³⁺ centres are also presented. The high resolution and ODNMR results for the C₄ᵥ symmetry A and SB1 centres in SrF2:Ho³⁺ crystals confirm the centre symmetry assignments and the model configurations proposed on the basis of the polarisation ratio measurements. The superhyperfine ODNMR frequencies correlate well with the changes in the crystal-field parameters between the two centres.

Abstract:

Anaerobic digestion is increasingly becoming essential for treating the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (MSW) according to the growing 'energy from waste' recycle concept. Over the last decade, efforts have been made to control the anaerobic digestion of the putrescible fraction of municipal solid waste in engineered reactors, rather than continuing with 'free' digestion in landfill sites. This way of increasing treatment efficiency can be achieved with significantly reduced retention time (days rather than years) and enables the recovery of valuable energy from waste without biogas emissions into the atmosphere, which cause adverse greenhouse effects. Three basic approaches have been explored for the anaerobic treatment of MSW: (a) conventional 'low solids' slurry digestion; (b) two-phase digestion; and (c) high solids 'dry and semi-dry' digestion. The advantages of high solids digestion processes include high loading rates, and high yields of biogas and methane. Anaerobic digestion at high solids content is also reported to reduce capital and operating costs through smaller reactor volume. Different reactor design configurations have been applied at full-scale and their performance evaluated. Commercial plants which use a high solids digestion process, recycle a portion of the digested solids residue in addition to the liquid from the digested residue. However, the exact recycling ratio and data concerning the recycling impact on the stability and performance of the digestion process, are not well documented in the literature. Also, it is recognised that mixing is important to enhance anaerobic digestion but little research has concentrated on the impact of mixing on continuous or semi-continuous high solids anaerobic digestion systems. The main aim of this research was to evaluate the potential methane production in the stabilisation of the putrescible fraction of MSW using two novel reactor designs. A vertical sequential reactor (VSR) was used to assess the effects of digested recycle ratio (DRR) and leachate recycling (LR) and a horizontal rotary reactor (I-IRR) was used to evaluate the impact of mixing on the digestion of the PFMSW. Experiments were conducted in both batch and semi-continuous mode using three 70 1 reactors, under mesophilic conditions (3 5°C) and high total solids content. Process performance was assessed using various waste parameters for solid waste and leachate treatment. Regarding solid waste treatment, VS removal, biogas and methane production and yields were the main parameters used for assessment, among several others. Accordingly, COD, VFA, pH, alkalinity, N1H3-N, TKN etc. have been some of the parameters used to monitor leachate quality. Furthermore, internal biological activity in the VSR was assessed using the observed VFA concentrations and degradation under different operational conditions (DRR and LR). Initially, batch experiments were carried out in order to evaluate the first start-up of high solids digestion. Furthermore, they provided seed digested residues for the subsequent semi-continuous studies, in addition to providing essential information regarding ultimate process efficiency in terms of methane yield and VS removal. Also, rapid start-up batch experiments were used to determine the required RT for semi-continuous studies. Optimum DRR and LR were determined with the use of the VSR semicontinuous process. A DRR of 0.5 was found to be optimum in terms of volumetric methane production, while LR2 (3.5 £ leachate recycle) provided a desirable economical option, because of its lower liquid requirements. I-IRR gave limited indicatory results expressing high treatment potential for high solids anaerobic digestion of the putrescible fraction of MSW. Finally, a mathematical model was developed for optimising the VSR operational conditions, utilising data produced under semi-continuous conditions.

La présence de surfaces solides peut modifier l'organisation et le comportement dynamique d'espèces chargées en solution. Dans ce cadre, nous étudions des systèmes chargés de complexité croissante au voisinage d'une surface d'argile par des méthodes numériques. Il convient de choisir une échelle de description appropriée selon les propriétés que l'on cherche à obtenir, tout en limitant le temps de calcul. Modéliser le transport d'ions dans un échantillon d'argile demande de décrire sa structure complexe mais également les interactions entre les particules mobiles considérées comme ponctuelles et les parois solides. Nous proposons un modèle mésoscopique composé d'un système à deux milieux dans lequel le déplacement des ions obtenu par dynamique brownienne est conditionné par la localisation de l'espèce diffusante, les coefficients de diffusion étant extraits de simulations atomiques de dynamique moléculaire. Pour des espèces chargées non ponctuelles comme un polyélectrolyte, le système peut être simplifié en construisant un modèle à gros grains qui permet d'avoir accès aux échelles de temps adaptées à la diffusion par dynamique de Langevin. Deux cas sont envisagés, avec une description explicite ou non des contre-ions, et les paramètres sont calibrés sur des simulations atomiques. En revanche, pour des molécules chargées complexes comme les nucléotides, une description tout atome est nécessaire pour tenir compte des interactions spécifiques qui émergent de la structure locale de la molécule. Les simulations de métadynamique permettent alors d'accéder aux grandeurs liées aux phénomènes « rares » comme l'adsorption des molécules sur la surface d'argile The presence of solid surfaces can modify the organization and the dynamics of charged species in solution with potential applications from the transport of polluants to formation of the firt biopolymers. We study charged systems with increasing complexity in the vicinity of a clay surface by numerical methods. The level of description should be adapted according to the relevant properties while limiting calculation times. Modeling the transport of ions in a clay sample requires to describe its complex structure but also the interactions between the mobile particles considered as punctual and the solid walls. We propose a mesoscopic model composed of a two-media system in which the displacement of the ions obtained by Brownian dynamics is conditioned by the localization of the diffusing species whith the diffusion coefficients being extracted from atomic simulations of molecular dynamics. For non-punctual species such as polyelectrolytes, the system can be simplified by constructing a coarse-grained model that allows to gain access to time scales adapted to diffusion phenomenon thanks to Langevin dynamics simulations. Two cases are considered, with an explicit or non-explicit description of the counter-ions, and the parameters are calibrated on atomic simulations. However, for complex charged molecules such as nucleotides, an atomic description is necessary to take into account the specific interactions emerging from the local structure of the molecule. There is a need for improving our knowledge and understanding about formation mechanisms and nature of amorphous state in order to prevent the unintended presence of disorder in solid pharmaceutical products and reduce the related stability issues. The suggested theory that water binding capacity of amorphous cellulose affects the chemical stability of hydrolysis sensitive drugs in formulations with cellulose based excipients needs a clarification and water-cellulose interaction profiles need to be examined. This thesis has addressed these questions. Chemical, mechanical and thermal methods have been used to create partially or predominantly amorphous solids. Mechanisms and the pathways for transformation to amorphous phase and the characteristic qualities of this phase is studied in order to give some tools to predict, to control or prevent the creation of disorder in a crystalline structure. The water interaction with amorphous pharmaceutical materials has been studied to improve stability of hydrolysis sensitive drugs. The transition to amorphous state during handling of pharmaceutical material, referred to as mechanical activation in processes like blending, mixing and compression is substantially a consequence of vitrification. The process is described as creation of hot spots where friction caused by particle sliding raise the temperature above the melting point of the material. The fast cooling process promotes creation of a local disordered molecular arrangement. It is possible to decrease the degree of amorphisation and undesired stability problems by reducing the friction and inhibit the creation of crystal defects during processing. The glass-forming propensity is an inherent material characteristic related to molecular size and structure and is not process dependent. Molecules with a couple of aromatic rings are often poor glass-formers. Less symmetrical, branched molecular structures with presence of electronegative atoms are more readily transformed to and exist in amorphous state when handled and stored at temperatures below their glass transition temperature. The interaction profile of cellulose with water is strongly dependent on solid state structure of cellulose. Crystallinity is the key parameter in water presenting capacity of cellulose. Amorphous regions have a capacity to bind the water and decrease water mobility and in that way reduce cellulose water presenting capacity despite higher moisture content in partially amorphous cellulose compared to crystalline cellulose. The fact that higher amorphous content decreases cellulose water presenting capacity is a promising lead to improve stability of hydrolysis sensitive drugs in compositions with cellulose. This knowledge could be applicable to other pharmaceutical materials as the differences between crystalline and amorphous states of material are generally the same for different kind of materials.

Lors de leur stockage ou de leur exposition, les objets du patrimoine sont soumis à des processus physico-chimiques d’altération liés à leur environnement et en particulier à l’action de polluants primaires (e.g. dioxyde de soufre, oxydes d’azote), secondaires (ozone) ou de composés organiques volatils (COVs). Il a été démontré que ces gaz/vapeurs se comportent comme des agents d’hydrolyse et d’oxydation. L’acide acétique fait partie des COVs ayant un impact considérable et reconnu dans la conservation des objets du patrimoine en particulier des films photographiques. En vue de lutter contre ses effets délétères, ce projet de thèse s’est focalisé sur la conception de nouveaux matériaux poreux hybrides multifonctionnels appelés « Metal-Organic Frameworks » (MOFs) pour la capture sélective de l’acide acétique en présence d’humidité (40% humidité relative) et à température ambiante. Les remarquables propriétés d’adsorption (sensibilité, sélectivité et capacité) et la grande versatilité des MOFs (balance hydrophile/hydrophobe, taille/forme des pores,…) ont été utilisés pour préconcentrer de façon sélective l’acide acétique en milieu humide. Les matériaux les plus performants ont ensuite été préparés sous forme de nanoparticules pour l’élaboration de films minces de qualité optique afin d’en étudier les propriétés d’adsorption et de co-adsorption (acide acétique/eau) par ellipsométrie. L’incorporation de nanoparticules métalliques plasmoniques a ensuite été effectuée afin de concevoir un capteur colorimétrique. L’objectif final de ce travail est de concevoir un nouveau type d’adsorbant caractérisé par une capacité et une sélectivité d’adsorption élevée et dont on pourrait aisément déterminer le niveau de saturation en acide acétique afin d’anticiper son remplacement et ainsi assurer la préservation des objets stockés et exposés dans les musées During their storage or their exhibition, the cultural heritage objects undergo physicochemical alteration processes related to their environment and in particular to the action of primary (e.g. sulfur dioxide, nitric oxides), secondary (ozone) pollutants or Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). It has been demonstrated that these gases/vapors are involved in hydrolysis and oxidation reactions. Among the most common VOCs encountered in museums, Acetic acid has a significant and recognized role in the deterioration of cultural heritage objects such as photographic films. In order to face this issue, this Ph.D. thesis focused on the design of new porous multifunctional hybrid materials denoted « Metal-Organic Frameworks » (MOFs) for the selective capture of acetic acid in the presence of moisture (40% relative humidity) and at room temperature. The remarkable adsorption properties (sensitivity, selectivity and capacity) and the great versatility of MOFs (hydrophicity/hydrophobicity balance, size/shape of pores,…) were used to preconcentrate selectively the acetic acid in humid conditions. The most performing materials were then prepared as nanoparticles and then used for the elaboration of high optical quality thin films in order to study the coadsorption (acetic acid/water) properties of MOFs by ellipsometry. The incorporation of plasmonic metal nanoparticles was then carried out in order to design a colorimetric sensor. The final objective is to devise a novel type of adsorbent that integrates a high VOC adsorption capacity and selectivity under humid conditions and an easy on-line monitoring of their saturation capacityin order to anticipate its replacement and therefore ensure the preservation of the stored and exhibited objects in museums

Abstract:

Acoustic Emission (AE), is a non-destructive testing and monitoring technique that can be applied to a wide range of situations for condition monitoring and fault diagnosis in mechanical systems and components. Acoustic emission technology involves the propagation of elastic (stress) waves generated by such events as particle impingement, cracking or fluid flow. These waves are recorded at one or more surface-mounted sensor placed at some distance from the generating site(s) and it is necessary to have a means of coping with the implications of the propagation path. It is generally not practicable to solve the wave equation for all possible modes of AE propagation in a solid and this project is based on simulating such propagation using ray tracing applied within a computer-generated solid model representing the structure being monitored. As the attenuation of AE waves is affected not only by the material properties but also by the geometry of the object and the type of surrounding media, knowledge of attenuation is essential to ensure that sensors can be placed appropriately on large or complex structures. The aim of the current work was to establish the capability of predicting the attenuation of AE using a computer-graphical ray tracing technique incorporated in a 3D solid model. The investigative approach involved simulating AE propagation in a range of simple objects of various shapes and sizes and also measuring propagation in these objects using a point source. By comparing simulated and measured attenuation, it was possible to determine appropriate values for the parameters of the simulation, such as the reflection coefficients and the degree of internal friction as well as the proportion of energy carried in surface and bulk waves, respectively. It is concluded that the ray tracing technique has the capability to predict AE attenuation in different shapes and with different environments and materials using a simple division of wave modes into bulk and surface waves. Refinements are suggested in the further work for cases where a more precise representation of the propagation modes is needed.

Les reactions d'hydrogenation du tertiobutyl-4 phenol et du 1,2-dihydroxybenzene ont ete etudiees. Les processus mis en jeu concernent l'etat solide organique et la catalyse heterogene. Dans ces reactions, le gaz reducteur est l'hydrogene, qui en se dissociant sur le catalyseur genere des especes mobiles activees de l'hydrogene (effet spillover ou d'epandage) capables de reagir avec le solide organique. L'etude experimentale concerne essentiellement la determination de la reactivite et la selectivite du tertiobutyl-4 phenol en presence de differents catalyseurs. En presence de catalyseurs au rhodium l'alcool cis est forme preferentiellement alors qu'en presence de platine c'st l'alcool trans qui est le produit majoritaire. Les catalyseurs a base palladium sont moins reactifs et conduisent a la formation de cetone. La selectivite varie egalement avec la nature du support; suivant la nature du catalyseur les chemins reactionnels different. Pour la reaction d'hydrogenation du tertiobutyl-4 phenol on peut envisager pour le rhodium un chemin reactionnel direct conduisant aux alcools alors qu'en presence de platine le chemin reactionnel passe par la formation intermediaire de cetone. L'etude cinetique permet d'etablir que la reaction est une reaction d'avancement interfaciale se produisant a l'interface catalyseur/solide organique. L'etude theorique comprend, d'une part une approche cinetique reactionnelle basee sur un modele de diffusion gaz-solide. La diffusion peut etre attribuee aux especes activees de l'hydrogene dans le solide organique; d'autre part une etude theorique basee sur l'application des methodes semi-empiriques de la chimie quantique (mndo), montre que h#3 considere comme une espece activee de l'hydrogene est capable de reagir avec une double liaison. Les composés R-M (avec R un atome de terre rare et M un métal de transition 3d) sont à l’origine de nombreuses applications et peuvent présentés des comportements originaux (effet Kondo, métamagnétisme, …) motivant des études fondamentales poussées. Parmi ces comportements remarquables, les transitions métamagnétiques d'électrons itinérants (MEI) en sont l'exemple le plus spectaculaire. Nous explorons ici le magnétisme d’électrons itinérants des phases RM12B6 (B = bore) dont le comportement singulier a attiré l’attention de la communauté.Dans une première partie, nous avons étudié le magnétisme 3d par la substitution du Fe au Co dans YCo12-xFexB6. Cette substitution cause une augmentation anisotrope de la maille. Nous avons déterminé la limite de solubilité du Fe. Les propriétés magnétiques de cette série de composés montrent une grande sensibilité à la présence du Fe dans la structure. Celles-ci ont été étudiées à travers différents modèles (champ moléculaire, Kuz'min, Inoue-Shimizu, et la théorie des fluctuations de spins de Takahashi). Il a été montré que la substitution du Fe au Co a pour effet d'augmenter le degré de délocalisation du magnétisme d'électrons itinérants dans cette famille de composés, tout en favorisant la mise en place progressive d'un ordre antiferromagnétique. Des transitions MEI ont été observées pour la première fois pour les composés avec x = 1,5 ; 2 et 2,5. Les diagrammes de phase magnétique de ces compositions ont été construits. Des mesures de diffraction neutronique sur poudres ont permis de déterminer le schéma d’occupation préférentiel du Fe dans YCo12-xFexB6 et de résoudre les structures magnétiques des composés YCo12B6 et YCo10Fe2B6. Des monocristaux massifs de ces deux compositions ont aussi été synthétisés pour la première fois, et les mesures d’aimantation ont permis l’identification des différents coefficients d’anisotropie pour YCo12B6.Dans une deuxième partie, nous avons étudié les effets de substitutions sur le composé LaFe12B6, dont le comportement magnétique est très original. L'étude de la substitution du Pr au La dans La1-xPrxFe12B6 a permis de déterminer la limite de solubilité du Pr dans cette structure cristalline, et de montrer la forte sensibilité des propriétés magnétiques du système LaFe12B6 à cette substitution. Les transitions MEI de ce système ont été étudiées en détails, permettant de construire les diagrammes de phases magnétiques de différentes compositions. Les différents effets physiques associés à ces transitions ont aussi été étudiés (effets magnétocaloriques, effets magnétostrictifs importants et magnétorésistance géante). Les mesures de diffraction de rayons X à basse température ont permis d’observer une transition structurale associée à la mise en ordre magnétique pour les teneurs en praséodyme avec x > 0,05. Cet abaissement de symétrie a été identifié comme le passage de la phase rhomboédriques R-3m à la phase monoclinique C2/m. Des mesures de diffraction neutronique à basse température ont permis d’observer que l’ordre magnétique de la phase monoclinique est celui d’un composé ferromagnétique. La substitution du C au B dans LaFe12B6-xCx a été étudiée par diffraction de rayons X synchrotron. La faible diminution des paramètres de maille a pu être quantifiée précisément. L’effet de la substitution du C au B sur le magnétisme du composé LaFe12B6 a été identifié comme analogue à l’application d’une pression externe positive. Les transitions MEI nécessitent donc des champs magnétiques externes plus importants pour s’enclencher. Les diagrammes de phase magnétique ont pu être construits pour différentes compositions en carbone, ceci en combinant les mesures d’aimantation de laboratoire avec des mesures en champs intenses pulsés R-M compounds (where R is a rare earth atom and M is a 3d transition metal) have numerous applications and can exhibit original behaviours (Kondo effect, metamagnetism, etc.) that motivate in-depth fundamental studies. Among these remarkable behaviours, the itinerant electron metamagnetic transitions (IEM) are the most spectacular example. Here we explore the magnetism of itinerant electrons in the RM12B6 (B = boron) phases, whose singular behaviour has attracted the attention of the community.In the first part, we studied 3d magnetism by the substitution of Fe for Co in YCo12-xFexB6. This substitution causes an anisotropic increase of the lattice. The solubility limit of Fe was determined. The magnetic properties of this series of compounds show great sensitivity to the presence of Fe in the structure. These were studied using various models (molecular field, Kuz'min, Inoue-Shimizu, and Takahashi spin fluctuation theory). It has been shown that the substitution of Fe for Co increases the degree of delocalisation of the magnetism of itinerant electrons in this family of compounds, while promoting the gradual establishment of an antiferromagnetic order. IEM transitions were observed for the first time for compounds with x = 1.5, 2 and 2.5. Magnetic phase diagrams were constructed for these compositions. Neutron powder diffraction measurements were used to determine the preferred Fe occupancy pattern in YCo12-xFexB6 and to resolve the magnetic structures of the compounds YCo12B6 and YCo10Fe2B6. Massive single crystals of these two compositions were also synthesised for the first time, and magnetisation measurements were used to identify the different anisotropy coefficients for YCo12B6.In the second part, we studied the effects of chemical subsitutions on the compound LaFe12B6, whose magnetic behaviour is highly original. The study of the substitution of Pr for La in La1-xPrxFe12B6 enabled us to determine the solubility limit of Pr in this crystal structure, and to show the strong sensitivity of the magnetic properties of the LaFe12B6 system to this substitution. The IEM transitions of this system were studied in detail, enabling magnetic phase diagrams of different compositions to be constructed. The various physical effects associated with these transitions were also studied (magnetocaloric effects, significant magnetostrictive effects and giant magnetoresistance). X-ray diffraction measurements at low temperature enabled us to observe a structural transition associated with magnetic ordering for Pr contents with x > 0.05. This lowering of symmetry was identified as the transition from the rhombohedral R-3m phase to the monoclinic C2/m phase. Low-temperature neutron diffraction measurements showed that the magnetic order of the monoclinic phase is that of a ferromagnetic compound. The substitution of C for B in LaFe12B6-xCx was studied by synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and the small decrease in lattice parameters was quantified precisely. The effect of the substitution of C for B on the magnetism of the LaFe12B6 compound was identified as analogous to the application of a positive external pressure. IEM transitions therefore require stronger external magnetic fields to initiate. Les composites Cu-Cr sont couramment utilisés comme matériaux de contact électrique pour ampoules à vide des disjoncteurs de moyenne tension. Pourtant très répandu, le frittage en phase solide de ces matériaux a été relativement peu étudié. L’optimisation du procédé passe par la compréhension des mécanismes de frittage. Cette étude est focalisée sur deux aspects importants du frittage : les processus d’oxydo-réduction liés aux oxydes de surfaces des poudres et la compétition entre mécanismes de densification et de gonflement au cours du frittage.L’oxydo-réduction a été étudiée par analyse thermogravimétrique couplée à différentes techniques de spectroscopie d’abord sur les matériaux purs puis sur les composites. Des analyses des interfaces par des coupes réalisées au FIB ont permis de préciser la localisation de l’oxyde dans les matériaux frittés. Un transfert d’oxygène a lieu entre les poudres de cuivre et de chrome. L’intensité de ce transfert dépend de la nature réductrice de l’atmosphère utilisée.La densification a été analysée par dilatométrie sur les matériaux purs et sur les composites. Ces analyses ont été appuyées par des observations microstructurales, notamment par tomographie des rayons X. L’effet des paramètres du procédé (atmosphère, vitesse de chauffage, poudres…) a été étudié. Les résultats montrent le lien entre la désoxydation des poudres de cuivre et le frittage. Un phénomène de gonflement du cuivre seul s’explique par le dégazage du cuivre à haute température lors de la fermeture des pores. Ce gonflement n’a pas lieu dans les composites Cu-Cr car le chrome retarde la fermeture des pores et piège les gaz émis par le cuivre en formant l’oxyde Cr2O3. L’atmosphère de frittage, la morphologie et la taille des poudres de chrome influent sur la densification. Le frittage sous vide permet de réduire la porosité. Une morphologie sphérique des particules de chrome limite l’effet inhibiteur de celui-ci sur la densification. Pour de faibles tailles de particules, le chrome participe à la densification, ce qui permet de mieux densifier le matériau. Ces résultats ouvrent des voies d’optimisation du procédé de frittage des matériaux.Les matériaux élaborés ont été testés dans leurs conditions d’utilisation, c'est-à-dire lors de coupures sur court-circuit en ampoule à vide. Ces essais ont montré l’intérêt de réduire la quantité d’oxyde de chrome et ont permis de déterminer l’effet des impuretés rencontrées usuellement sur les poudres de cuivre et de chrome Cu-Cr composites are commonly used as contact materials for medium voltage circuit breakers vacuum bottles. Solid state sintering process of Cu-Cr composites is widespread but has been relatively little studied. Optimizing the process requires understanding the sintering mechanisms. This study was focused on two important aspects of sintering: the redox reactions associated to oxides on the powder surface and the competition between densification and swelling mechanisms during sintering.The redox reactions were studied by thermogravimetric analysis coupled to various spectroscopic techniques, first on isolated Cu and Cr, then on Cu-Cr composites. Interfaces analyses obtained by FIB clarified the location of the oxide inside the sintered materials. Oxygen transfer takes place between copper and chromium powders. This phenomenon strongly depends on the reducing character of the sintering atmosphere.Densification was analyzed by dilatometry on Cu, Cr and Cu-Cr composites. This analysis was supported by microstructural observations, including X-ray tomography .The effect of process parameters (atmosphere, heating rate, powders ...) was studied. The results show the relationship between sintering and copper oxide reduction. The swelling phenomenon of copper compacts is explained by high temperature degassing of copper during pore closure. This swelling does not occur in Cu-Cr composites as chromium delays pore closing and entraps the gases released by copper. Sintering atmosphere, chromium morphology and chromium particle size affect densification. Vacuum sintering reduces porosity. Chromium particles with spherical shape limit its inhibiting effect on densification. For small particle sizes, chromium participates to densification, leading to better densification of the material. These results open the route for optimizing the sintering of Cu-Cr composites.Cu-Cr composites were tested for short circuit performance in vacuum interrupters. The result of these tests showed the importance of reducing the chromium oxide amount. The effect of impurities commonly encountered on the powders copper and chromium powders was also determined

Abstract:

Les piles à combustible sont des systèmes qui permettent de convertir directement de l'énergie chimique en énergie électrique. La structure physique d'une pile à combustible est composée d'une cathode et d'une anode poreuses séparées par un électrolyte dense. Les piles à combustible à oxydes solides (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC))offrent une alternative intéressante pour la production d'énergie et une certaine polyvalence dans leur utilisation. Les recherches actuelles se focalisent sur l'abaissement de la température de fonctionnement de ce type de pile (500-700°C) pour augmenter leur durée de vie, diminuer les coûts de fabrication et les dégradations aux interfaces. Afin de compenser ces problèmes, la recherche tend vers des matériaux présentant de meilleures propriétés électrochimiques ou en modifiant la microstructure de la cathode pour améliorer le transfert de masse et le transfert de charge. La cathode est une couche très importante dans la pile SOFC car elle présente une résistance de la polarisation dont la réduction constitue un défi important à traiter. Dans une première partie de ce travail de thèse nous avons développé une méthode pour permettre d'améliorer les propriétés électrochimiques de cathodes de manganite de lanthane dopée au strontium (LSM). La seconde partie a été consacrée à l'élaboration et la caractérisation par spectroscopie d'impédance de demi-cellules symétriques de SOFC avec un matériau composite à base de LSM permettant d'améliorer les propriétés électrochimiques des électrodes à des températures comprises entre 600 °C - 700 °C Fuel cells are systems that convert chemical energy directly into electrical energy. The physical structure of a fuel cell is composed of a porous cathode and anode separated by a dense electrolyte. Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) offer an alternative for power generation and versability in their use. Current research focuses on lowering the operating temperature of this type of fuel cell (500-700°C) to increase their life, reduce manufacturing costs and damageto the interfaces. In order to compensate these problems, research tends towards materials with better electrochemical properties or by modifying the microstructure of the cathode to improve mass transfer and charge transfer. The cathode is a very important layer in the SOFC stack because it has a polarization resistance whose reduction is a major challenge to deal with. In a first part of this thesis work we have developed a method to improve the electochemical properties of strontium doped lanthanum manganite (LSM) cathodes. The second part was devoted to the elaboration and caracterization by impedance spectroscopy of SOFC symmetric half-cells with a LSM-based composite material allowing to improve the electochemical properties of electrodes at temperatures between 600-700 °C

Ce manuscrit décrit l'installation d'un lit fluidisé dont les particules solides sont chauffées par micro-ondes, et les systèmes de mesure qui permettent d'en étudier le fonctionnement. Un modèle thermique qui rend compte de la distribution de la température a été aussi mis au point. L'applicateur est une cavité rectangulaire, résonnant selon les modes teo3n (n = 1, 3, 5), traversé par le lit fluidisé. Les puissances incidente, réfléchie et le coefficient de réflexion complexe sont calculés à partir des informations fournies par un capteur comportant quatre sondes et place en avant du système de couplage de la cavité. Les profils de la température sont mesurés par un thermocouple coulissant dans un lit et non interférant avec la distribution du champ électromagnétique. Le modèle thermique est cohérent si le gaz et le solide sont à la même température nonobstant le transfert de chaleur permanent entre les deux phases, en régime stationnaire et au cours du refroidissement du lit que l'on obtient en interrompant le chauffage par microonde. Si on cherche à faire fonctionner l'applicateur en cavité multimode, la distribution du champ électromagnétique varie avec le mouvement des particules. La cavité ne peut pas alors être accordée en fréquence et le système de couplage n'assure plus le transfert total de la puissance incidente aux particules du lit fluidisé

En vue de diminuer la température de fonctionnement de 1000 à 700°C des piles à combustible à oxydes solides (SOFC), il est nécessaire de réduire l'épaisseur du conducteur ionique pour limiter sa résistance. Dans ce contexte, la pulvérisation cathodique magnétron en condition réactive autorise la synthèse de revêtements dont l'épaisseur est compatible avec celle requise (~ 5-10 µm). Après une description du dispositif expérimental et des techniques de caractérisation mise en œuvres pour l'étude, nous présenterons les résultats concernant le matériau de référence des SOFC, la zircone stabilisée à l'yttrium (YSZ). Puis, nous exposerons les mesures sur deux candidats potentiels à son remplacement : la cérine gadoliniée (GDC) et le molybdate de lanthane (LAMOX). L'ensemble des mesures pour chaque composé est en accord avec la littérature. Enfin, une étude préliminaire est menée sur la synthèse d'un électrolyte bicouche de GDC/YSZ The major problem of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) is their operating temperature. One challenge is to decrease this temperature from 1000 to 700°C, this is the Intermediate Temperature –SOFC technology. It's very important to decrease the thickness of the ionic conductor to reduce its resistance. In this context, the reactive magnetron sputtering is a powerful technique for elaborating the coating with a compatible thickness with the application (~ 5-10 µm). After a description of the experimental device and of some specific analysis methods for this study, we present some results about the materials reference of the SOFC, the Yttria Stabilised Zirconia (YSZ). Then, we present some results about two new materials with higher ionic conductivity of oxygen than YSZ at 700°C: Gadolinia Doped Ceria (GDC) and Lanthanum Molydenum Oxide (LAMOX). At last, we present first results on the synthesis of the bilayer electrolyte coating: GDC/YSZ

Les besoins croissants en stockage de l’énergie exigent une amélioration continue des batteries lithium-ion. Le mécanisme de redox anionique qui permet d’augmenter la densité d’énergie des électrodes positives mais est associé à divers inconvénients (hystérésis et décroissance de tension, cinétique lente, etc.) qui restent à résoudre. De plus, la sécurité des batteries lithium-ion peut être améliorée en concevant des batteries tout-solide. Dans cette thèse, nous nous sommes d'abord concentrés sur le développement de nouveaux électrolytes solides à base d'oxydes pour des applications dans les batteries tout-solide. Nous avons exploré l’influence du désordre structural sur conductivité ionique des électrolytes solides et montré comment il était possible d’augmenter la conductivité en stabilisant à température ambiante les phases désordonnées présentes à haute température. Ensuite, nous avons conçu des électrodes à base de sulfures riches en Li présentant du rédox anionique, qui en outre présentent une excellente réversibilité. Ainsi, les matériaux d'électrode nouvellement conçus ouvrent une direction possible pour atténuer les problèmes liés au rédox anionique. The anionic redox chemistry has emerged recently as a new paradigm to design high-energy positive electrodes of LIBs, however with some issues (i.e., voltage hysteresis and fading, sluggish kinetics, etc.) that remained to be solved. In addition, the safety of the LIBs can be improved by designing all-solid-state batteries (ASSB). In this thesis, we first focused on the development of new oxide-based solid electrolytes (SE) for applications in ASSBs. We explored the influence of disorder on the ionic conductivity of SEs and demonstrated how to increase the conductivity by stabilizing disordered high-temperature phases. Furthermore, we designed Li-rich layered sulfide electrodes that undergo anionic sulfur redox, with excellent reversibility. Thus, the newly designed electrode materials show a possible direction to mitigate the issues related to anionic redox. Lastly, we used the Li-rich sulfides as positive electrode in ASSB with sulfide-based SEs that demonstrate excellent cyclability, thereby highlighting the importance of interfacial compatibility in ASSBs

Les batteries à l'état solide (ASSB) qui reposent sur l'utilisation d'électrolytes solides (SE) à conductivité ionique élevée sont le Saint-Graal de la future technologie des batteries, car elles pourraient théoriquement permettre une augmentation de près de 70 et 40 % des densités d'énergie volumétrique (Wh/l) et gravimétrique (Wh/kg), respectivement, ainsi qu'une sécurité accrue par rapport à la technologie des batteries au lithium-ion. À cette fin, la dernière décennie a vu le développement des ASSB, principalement grâce à des SE à base de sulfure, en raison de leurs propriétés intrinsèques favorables. Toutefois, ces progrès n'ont pas permis de mettre au point des ASSB pratiques et performants en raison des réactions complexes de décomposition interfaciale qui se produisent aux électrodes négative et positive et qui entraînent une détérioration de la durée de vie des cycles. En se concentrant sur l'électrode positive, cela nécessite une meilleure compréhension de la compatibilité électrochimique/chimique des SE qui est cruellement nécessaire pour les applications du monde réel.Ce travail vise à fournir des réponses concernant la meilleure paire d'oxyde en couche SE dans la cathode composite pour les ASSB. En menant une étude systématique sur l'effet de la nature des SE sur les performances des batteries, nous montrons que les performances de Li6PS5Cl rivalisent avec celles de Li3InCl6, surpassant toutes deux celles de β-Li3PS4 et ce, indépendamment de la voie de synthèse. Ces performances sont préservées lors de l'assemblage de piles à l'état solide, puisque l'appariement de Li6PS5Cl avec une cathode en oxyde stratifié présente la meilleure rétention en cas de cyclage. Cette étude révèle également que les halogénures réagissent avec les sulfures dans les cellules hétérostructurées, ce qui entraîne une diminution rapide de la capacité en cas de cyclage en raison de réactions de décomposition interfaciales. Pour éliminer ce processus de dégradation interfaciale, nous proposons une stratégie d'ingénierie de surface qui permet d'atténuer la détérioration de la surface et de débloquer des ASSB très performants. Enfin, l'analyse électrochimique, structurelle et spectroscopique combinée démontre que Li3InCl6 ne peut pas résister à des potentiels d'oxydation plus élevés, ce qui entraîne des produits de décomposition contrairement à ce que les calculs théoriques prévoyaient All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) that rely on the use of solid electrolytes (SEs) with high ionic conductivity are the holy grail for future battery technology, since it could theoretically enable achieving nearly 70 and 40 % increase in volumetric (Wh/l) and gravimetric (Wh/kg) energy densities, respectively, as well as enhanced safety compared to lithium-ion battery technology. However, such advancements were not straightforward to unlock high-performing practical ASSBs because of complex interfacial decomposition reactions taking place at both negative and positive electrodes, leading to a worsening cycling life. Focusing on the positive electrode, this calls for a better understanding of electrochemical/chemical compatibility of SEs that is sorely needed for real-world applications.This work aims to provide answers regarding the best SE-layered oxide pair in composite cathode for ASSBs. By conducting a systematic study on the effect of nature of SEs in battery performances, we show that Li6PS5Cl performances rival that of Li3InCl6, both outperforming β-Li3PS4 and this, independently of the synthesis route. This is preserved when assembling solid-state cells since Li6PS5Cl pairing with layered oxide cathode shows the best retention upon cycling. This study also unravels that halides react with sulfides in hetero-structured cell design, hence resulting in a rapid capacity decay upon cycling stemming from interfacial decomposition reactions. To eliminate such interfacial degradation process, we suggest a surface engineering strategy that helps to alleviate the surface deterioration, unlocking highly performing ASSBs. Eventually, combined electrochemical, structural and spectroscopic analysis demonstrate that Li3InCl6 cannot withstand at higher oxidation potentials, resulting in decomposition products in contrast to what the theoretical calculations predicted

Il est bien connu que divers solides amorphes ont de nombreuses propriétés universelles. L'une d'entre elles est la variation de la conductivité thermique en fonction de la température. Cependant, le mécanisme microscopique du transfert de chaleur dans le domaine de température supérieure à 20 K est encore mal compris. Simulations numériques récentes du silicium et de la silice amorphes montrent que les modes de vibration dans la gamme de fréquences correspondante (au-dessus de plusieurs THz) sont délocalisés. En même temps ils sont complètement différents des phonons acoustiques de basse fréquence, dits « diffusions ».Dans ce travail, nous présentons un modèle stable de matrice aléatoire d'un solide amorphe. Dans ce modèle, on peut faire varier le degré de désordre allant du cristal parfait jusqu'au milieu mou extrêmement désordonné sans rigidité macroscopique. Nous montrons que les solides amorphes réels sont proches du deuxième cas limite, et que les diffusions occupent la partie dominante du spectre de vibration. La fréquence de transition entre les phonons acoustiques et diffusons est déterminée par le critère Ioffe-Regel. Fait intéressant, cette fréquence de transition coïncide pratiquement avec la position du pic Boson. Nous montrons également que la diffusivité et la densité d'états de vibration de diffusons sont pratiquement constantes en fonction de la fréquence. Par conséquent, la conductivité thermique est une fonction linéaire de la température dans le domaine allant à des températures relativement élevées, puis elle sature. Cette conclusion est en accord avec de nombreuses données expérimentales. En outre, nous considérons un modèle numérique de matériaux de type de silicium amorphe et étudions le rôle du désordre pour les vibrations longitudinales et transverses. Nous montrons aussi que la théorie des matrices aléatoires peut être appliquée avec succès pour estimer la densité d'états vibrationnels des systèmes granulaires bloqués It is well known that various amorphous solids have many universal properties. One of them is the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity. However, the microscopic mechanism of the heat transfer above 20 K is still poorly understood. Recent numerical simulations of amorphous silicon and silica show that vibrational modes in the corresponding frequency range (above several THz) are delocalized, however they are completely different from low-frequency acoustic phonons, called “diffusons”.In this work we present a stable random matrix model of an amorphous solid. In this model one can vary the strength of disorder going from a perfect crystal to extremely disordered soft medium without macroscopic rigidity. We show that real amorphous solids are close to the second limiting case, and that diffusons occupy the dominant part of the vibrational spectrum. The crossover frequency between acoustic phonons and diffusons is determined by the Ioffe-Regel criterion. Interestingly, this crossover frequency practically coincides with the Boson peak position. We also show that, as a function of frequency, the diffusivity and the vibrational density of states of diffusons are practically constant. As a result, the thermal conductivity is a linear function of temperature up to rather high temperatures and then saturates. This conclusion is in agreement with numerous experimental data.Further, we consider a numerical model of amorphous silicon-like materials and investigate the role of disorder for longitudinal and transverse vibrations. We also show that the random matrix theory can be successfully applied to estimate the vibrational density of states of granular jammed systems

Les technologies de stockage énergétiques jouent un rôle crucial en accommodant le caractère intermittent des énergies renouvelable. Actuellement, les batteries lithium-ion prédominent le marché des appareils portables. Cependant, pour les véhicules électriques, des avancées sont nécessaires en termes de sécurité et de densité énergétique, conduisant à l'exploration de nouvelles technologies de batterie, notamment les batteries tout-solide. Cette thèse se concentre sur les obstacles entravant l'application pratique de ces batteries tout-solide, en mettant particulièrement en lumière le rôle des composites cathodes. L'attention s'est portée sur un composite couramment utilisé, composé de Li6PS5Cl comme électrolyte solide (SE) associé à un matériau actif de type NMC. Les mécanismes de dégradation se révèlent être influencés par deux interfaces : SE/additif carbone et SE/AM (matériau actif). Le cyclage en dessous de 3,6 V par rapport au Li-In/In montrent que la dégradation prédominante provient de l'interface SE/additif carbone, tandis qu'à 3,9 V, l'interface SE/AM devient le principal foyer de dégradation. A partir de là, l'effet des additifs de carbone dans le composite a été minutieusement étudié. Ainsi, une concentration de plus de 2 % en poids de VGCF a un impact négatif sur la conduction ionique des composites. De plus, une analyse in situ de la conductivité électronique des composites sans carbone révèle des changements induits par l'insertion/désinsertion du lithium dans le transport électronique, avec une réduction de la conductivité électronique à états de charge élevés, en particulier dans les NMC riches en nickel. Globalement, les résultats indiquent qu'une faible quantité d'additif carbone peut avoir des avantages significatifs, à condition que les réactions chimiques soient maitrisées. Ainsi, des stratégies minimisant les pertes de capacité à long terme ont été explorées, en examinant des paramètres tels que la pression d'assemblage, le loading, les cycles de formation, la température et les coating carbonate. En fusionnant les conditions optimales, un composite de cathode optimisé est présenté, ouvrant la voie à des avancées prometteuses dans la technologie des batteries tout-solide While Lithium-ion batteries dominate portable devices, growing safety and energy density demands in electric vehicle batteries have led to the exploration of "beyond Li-ion" technology. All-Solid-State Batteries (ASSBs) have emerged as a promising alternative to Li-ion batteries. Thus, this doctoral research focuses on overcoming challenges hindering the practical implementation of ASSBs, with a specific emphasis on cathode composites. The investigation revolves around a common composite comprising Li6PS5Cl solid electrolyte (SE) and NMC active material (AM). The research unveils the degradation mechanisms within ASSBs, governed by SE/Carbon additive and SE/AM interfaces. It is observed that capacity deterioration, occurring below 3.6 V vs. Li-In/In, is primarily attributed to SE/Carbon interfaces. Conversely, elevating the voltage to 3.9 V shifts the primary degradation source to SE/AM interfaces. Then, the adverse effects of carbon additives on the ionic conduction of composites are demonstrated, particularly when exceeding 2 wt. % VGCF. Moreover, the study delves into the electronic conductivity of carbon-free composites using innovative in situ monitoring. This reveals Li-induced alterations hindering electronic conductivity, especially at high charge levels, notably in high Ni-content NMC. Furthermore, the influence of particle size and morphology on electronic percolation is extensively examined, advocating for minimal VGCF to enhance kinetics and stability. Strategies for effectively incorporating carbon additives while mitigating long-term capacity loss are explored, encompassing assembly pressure, loading, formation cycles, temperature, and carbonate coating. By mixing these optimal conditions, an enhanced cathode composite is introduced, holding promising potential for the progression of All-Solid-State Battery technology

Além da grande influência que causam nas características finais de alguns produtos da indústria alimentícia, recentemente pesquisas também os apontam como bons materiais para o armazenamento de energia (phase change materials ¿ PCMs). Nesse trabalho são apresentados diagramas T-x do Equilíbrio Sólido-Líquido de sistemas binários de ácidos graxos saturados através de uma reinterpretação das curvas térmicas obtidas pela calorimetria exploratória diferencial. Esses diagramas de fase apresentam os pontos peritético e eutético além de transições na fase sólida. Esse trabalho investiga detalhadamente a fase sólida das misturas de ácidos graxos saturados, com a intenção de compreender a existência do ponto peritético e das transições na fase sólida que aparecem nos diagramas de equilíbrio. Para esse estudo foram usadas as técnicas de difração de Raios-X, de espalhamento Raman, a microscopia óptica convencional, a microscopia óptica a altas pressões e a calorimetria exploratória diferencial, através da qual foram determinados os diagramas de fase estudados. Através desse estudo foi possível apresentar um diagrama de fases muito mais complexo do que até agora foi encontrado na literatura. Essa complexidade se deve, além da reação peritética e da reação eutética, já conhecidas desses sistemas, a uma reação metatética que ocorre logo acima da temperatura peritética. Também há a formação de solução sólida nos extremos do diagrama de fases, comprovada através do diagrama de Tamman e a uma região de completa miscibilidade, devido à formação de um composto com ponto de fusão incongruente. Abstract: Fatty acids are important not just to be the main constituent of oils and fats but also because of the important behavior of lipids systems and that can be used as row materials in the manufacture of emulsions, plastics and products for cleaning and others. Besides of the big influenced that causes in the final characteristics of some products for food industries recent research points that they are excellent phase change materials (PCMs). This work presents T-x diagrams of solid-liquid equilibrium of binary systems of saturated fatty acids through the reinterpretation of the differential thermal curves obtained by differential scanning calorimetry. These phase diagrams presents the peritectic and eutectic points besides the transitions on the solid phase. This work studies the solid phase of saturated fatty acids mixtures looking forward to verify the occurrence of the peritectic point and the transitions on the solid phase. For this study it was used the following techniques: X-ray diffratometry, FT-Raman spectroscopy, conventional optical microscopy, optical microscopy under high pressure and differential scanning calorimetry. The phase diagrams studied were determined by differential scanning calorimetry. The results obtained through these techniques shows a phase diagram more complex than previously reported in the literature. This complexity is due to a peritectic and eutectic, and to a metatectic reaction that occurs closer to the peritectic temperature. Besides these reactions there is formation of solid solution on the extremes of the phase diagram proven by the Tamman plot and the existence of a region with complete miscibility, close to the peritectic point, due the formation of a compound with incongruently melting point. Les dysfonctionnements observés dans les enceintes de conversion thermochimique tels que les zones mortes et les courts-Circuits conduisent en général à une mauvaise valorisation de la ressource énergétique et à une pollution atmosphérique. Ils trouvent leur origine dans les conditions aérauliques au sein de ces enceintes. Ils pourront alors être évités par une meilleure maîtrise de ces écoulements. Nous proposons dans ce travail d’une part, le développement d’un nouvel outil pour la détermination de la distribution des temps de séjour de la phase solide, basé sur la luminescence de particules préalablement enrobées de pigments phosphorescents. Cette méthode systémique, optique, non intrusive et souple d’emploi a été mise en place à l’échelle laboratoire sur un banc d’essais aéraulique. D’autre part, nous avons développé un modèle numérique permettant de déterminer la distribution des temps de séjour afin de maîtriser les écoulements à la sortie des enceintes en vue de les optimiser et les extrapoler à l’échelle industrielle. Cette approche analytique est basée sur une modélisation par couplage MFN de type volumes finis du comportement d’un fluide à l’aide du Code Saturne et DEM de type éléments discrets du comportement du solide à l’aide du code SIGRAME. Enfin une confrontation de la DTS du modèle numérique avec laDTS expérimentale a été réalisée Dysfunctions observed in thermochemical conversion reactors like dead zones and short circuits generally lead to inaccurate pricing of energy resources and air pollution. They originate in the air flow conditions in these aeraulic reactor. They can then be avoided by a better control of these flows. We propose in this work to develop a new tool for determining the distribution of residence time of the solid phase, based on the luminescence of particles previously coated with phosphorescent pigments. This optical method, non-Intrusive and flexible, has been implemented at a laboratory scale, on an aeraulic test bench.On the other hand, we have developed a numerical model allowing to determine the distribution of the residence time to master the flows at the exit of surrounding walls to optimize them and extrapolate them at the industrial scale. This analytical approach is based on a modelling by coupling MFN by finite volume types via the Code Saturn and DEM by discrete elements of the solid behavior by means of the code SIGRAME. Finally a confrontation of the DTS of the digital model with the experimental DTS has been done

Cette thèse porte sur la méthode de Fluorescence Induite par Laser (LIF) à haute cadence développée sur deux atomes métalliques (Al et Fe) utilisés comme traceurs fluorescents dans les flammes de propergols solides où ils sont naturellement présents. Deux expériences d’évaporation de l’aluminium sont mises en œuvre pour mettre au point la technique dans des conditions contrôlées sur une large gamme de pressions et températures. Un modèle théorique du processus de fluorescence appliqué à ces deux atomes est élaboré pour calculer les taux de quenching du signal avec la pression et la température. Les données collisionnelles qui sont inconnues sont prédéterminées théoriquement pour Fe et expérimentalement pour Al. Les coefficients de transferts d’énergie et d’élargissements spectraux par collisions de l’atome Al sont déterminés expérimentalement en environnement d’azote pur. Une étude du comportement du signal de Al avec l’énergie laser est effectuée pour mesurer les seuils de saturation avec les gaz N₂, Ar et He en fonction de la pression. Le modèle permet de reproduire correctement les profils temporels et spectraux avec toutefois des approximations et des limitations qui sont explicitées. Une première application de l’imagerie LIF sur Al dans une flamme de propergol solide aluminisé (10 bar et 3000 K) permet de visualiser des gouttes d’aluminium réactives et observer leur évolution dans la flamme During the PhD thesis, high-speed laser induced fluorescence (LIF) of two metallic atoms (Al and Fe) is presented, in order to use them as fluorescent markers in solid propellant flames, where they are naturally present. LIF measurements are first performed inside two different evaporation chambers used to generate aluminum vapors in controlled conditions over a broad pressure and temperature range. A theoretical model of the LIF process is elaborated and applied to both atoms in order to calculate the signal quenching rate as a function of pressure and temperature. Unavailable collisional data are determined theoretically for Fe and experimentally for Al. Energy transfer and collisional broadening coefficients are determined experimentally for the Al atom in pure nitrogen environment. Study of the signal level of Al as a function of laser intensity is undertaken to measure saturation thresholds in N₂, He and Ar as a function of pressure. The model is used to properly reproduce the temporal and spectral profiles, though some approximations and limitations remain. A first application of high-speed LIF imaging to the measurement of aluminum in a solid propellant flame (10 bar , 3000 K) is demonstrated. It allows us to clearly visualize reactive aluminum droplets in the flame and to follow their evolution in the flame

Les données structurales corroborées par des calculs théoriques effectués par la méthode DFT sur les motifs anioniques en fonction du rapport halogène/chalcogène ont permis d'étudier l'influence de la substitution sur les caractéristiques des motifs. De tels composés sont susceptibles d'être utilisés ultérieurement en solution pour l'élaboration de matériaux hybrides. Ainsi, des composés hybrides à clusters ont été préparés par cocristallisation de motifs anioniques avec des entités organiques ou organométalliques. Par ailleurs, des assemblages supramoléculaires ont été obtenus par greffage de groupements organiques fonctionnalisés sur les positions apicales du cluster Mo6.
