Abstract:
This commentary is submitted, along with my portfolio of compositions (and accompanying compact disk) in fulfillment of my PhD in composition. The purpose is to provide an accompaniment to my portfolio of compositions, to give insight into the works within it, and to discuss the scores with regard to their relevant aesthetical concerns and compositional techniques. I will also assess the works in the context of compositional practices past and present. Writing this commentary is slightly curious by its very nature: as the composer I have a deep and even emotional connection to the scores yet must try to distance myself sufficiently from them to be objective about discussing them. Despite the nature of this task I do come at it knowing exactly what my compositional intentions were at the time of writing the various works in the portfolio. It is also of interest that this research degree has been a process of personal and compositional development over a period of four years to what I have come to consider my compositional 'voice'. This development will be charted and recurring devices and the musical means which I now rely on in writing my music will be identified and examined. The discussion of works in this commentary will start with the general and gradually focus throughout the course of writing to the specific in the final chapter. In the first chapter I will discuss some of the more general aspects of my compositions and look at principal compositional concerns, seeking to illuminate and examine the sources from where I take my inspiration (both musical and extra-musical). In this chapter I will also assess my work in terms of its cultural context. The second chapter will look at a variety of compositional techniques and devices I use in my work (with reference to specific examples) and will put them into a context according to the canon of twentieth and twenty-first century acoustic concert music. The third and final chapter will take the form of an analysis of the three works at the core of the portfolio of compositions in this submission: Blodeugerdd for baritone voice and piano, Cromlech: Viola Sonata for viola and piano and Meddylun for orchestra. These pieces, whilst apparently very different in their natures represent the core of the submission in a variety of ways. They cover the time span of this project in its entirety: Blodeugerdd is the earliest work in the portfolio and Meddylun was one of the last completed scores. Additionally they demonstrate my ability to compose in two of the facets required by the PhD (to write for large instrumental forces and to work in large time scales). Whilst there is no long orchestral work in my portfolio the chamber works Blodeugerdd and Cromlech: Viola Sonata deal in large time scales and the eight minute orchestral concert overture Meddylun is a detail-packed score for large forces. Through applying the sort of techniques I used in writing Meddylun and dealing with a large ensemble to the sort of large time scale approach used in Blodeugerdd or Cromlech: Viola Sonata I should be able to write a long orchestral work in the future. I am hugely grateful to have been able to complete this project which allowed me four years of relatively uninterrupted composing time and permitted me to mature both in terms of my music and compositional abilities and in a more personal way. There are a variety of people whose help throughout the course of my PhD I would like to acknowledge: Firstly my supervisor Professor Anthony Powers whose advice and constructive criticisms have been invaluable to me. Other members of staff too, must be mentioned for their support, encouragement and guidance: perhaps most that of Dr. Richard Elfyn Jones and Dr. Arlene Elizabeth Sierra, although I am of course hugely grateful and indebted to the entire faculty of Cardiff University Music School. My peer group of research students also require a mention for their support, encouragement and friendship. Also a number of performers must be thanked: most notably baritone Jeremy Huw Williams who generously allowed me to write him what evolved into my first professional engagement Blodeugerdd (included in this submission) and performed the work on more than one occasion. Following Williams a variety of performers and ensembles commissioned me to write them pieces and this has lead to the many of the works in this portfolio receiving professional performances. I must also thank festival directors John Metcalf, Peter Reynolds, David Campbell and Guto Pryderi Puw for including my work in their events.

With the increase and popularity of the use of internet, hate speech has reached wider dimensions in societies. This thesis will provide empirical examples to show the relation between speech and actions. This paper will use speech-act theory and social movement theory to portray the relation between hate speech on social media and domestic terrorism inspired by far right extremist. Even though, there has been a lot of work for counter terrorism, domestic terrorism is still overlooked. Empirical sources say that domestic terrorism poses a threat as much as international terrorism. This thesis will bring light over the connections of hate speech and domestic terrorism inspired by far right extremists. It will conclude that there is an evident relation that hate speech on social media is contributing to domestic terrorism actions encouraged by far right extremism.

The objective of this thesis was to investigate organizational changes in a municipal administration. The case in focus for this study has been the labour market administration in the city of Helsingborg. Methods that have been used in this study has been a qualitative approach as well as having conducted for semi structured interviews with public officials. Furthermore, the main theoretical framework in this study has been a neo-institutional theory. The conclusions that this thesis has drawn is that organisations are affected by their surrounding world, both directly and indirectly which is expressed as normative isomorphism, coercive isomorphism and mimetic isomorphism.

Abstract:
Web page loading time is one of the critical challenges on the Internet. Thistopic attracts more researchers as it largely reflects the user satisfaction.A web page resources typically consists of Hyper Text Markup Language(HTML), Cascading Style-Sheet (CSS), JavaScript (JS), media files, etc.As the complexity of the web page increases, the size of files fetched fromserver also increases which causes delay in transmitting, loading, parsing andrendering the web page. The web page is not rendered until HTML, CSS and JS files are loadedand parsed. Not all such files are needed to be rendered for the first page.Optimizing and loading only critical les required for the first page, can considerablyreduce time taken to load the web page. After the first page isrendered, the rest of the files can be loaded and executed. In this thesis,we focus on improving the time taken for First Meaningful Paint(FMP) ofwebsite by loading the critical files initially. We used Design Science Research(DSR) methodology and created a PhantomJS application, to identifyand segregate used and unused CSS for the first meaningful paint of the webpage. We also analyzed script files to load only critical files required forFMP and the rest later. We evaluated our experiment by studying a case onAxis Communications AB and measured its website's performance to find ifour experiment reduced FMP time. It showed improvement in time takenfor FMP from 1284ms to 372.6ms. Based on the results, we suggest to webdevelopers to separate and load the files required for FMP and load the restof the files needed for the website later, so that the first page is renderedquickly.

Abstract:
Abstract The goal of this paper is to provide insight into the development and execution of the short film, Timelocked. I will focus on the complete process of the film’s creation, from the first inspiration of the idea through its planning, its production and, finally, its use beyond submission to my thesis committee for consideration. The most significant challenge for this project was remaining true to the story’s genre, tone, and theme throughout each iteration of its development. Therefore, the structure of the paper will serve to describe the entire process with respect to the preservation of these three aspects. My goal is to prove mastery in the fine art of film production by creating a film which effectively shows deep understanding of the time-travel sub-genre of science-fiction films, while subverting that sub-genre in a unique way, causing an emotional effect in the audience.

The regulatory effects of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine are diverse ranging from autonomic nervous system and the central nervous system through different types of neurons innervated by cholinergic inputs. Muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs) are divided into five receptor subtypes (M1-M5). In general, M1, M3 and M5 receptor subtypes are coupled via Gq like proteins; while M2 and M4 subtypes are coupled to Gi-proteins. Muscarinic receptors are widely distributed in the body where they mediate a variety of important physiological effects. mAChRs have been the target of drug development efforts for the treatment of various disorders including overactive bladder, Alzheimer's disease, pain, cognitive impairment, dr<br>Temple University--Theses

I had performed a recital of my compositions on April 22, 2016. This thesis is a portfolio of all of my compositions, including the program from my recital, program notes for each piece, and all scores. My senior recital consisted of two distinct halves. The first half was an exploration of abstract, theoretical, and experimental concepts in Western Art Music. The second half was an exploration in synthesizing the Carnatic music system with Western Art Music styles. This half was also an experiment in reversing musical orientalism, which has been historically prevalent in Western Art Music.

Abstract:
The title of this compilation of my own creative writings is Trees, Breathe, Paper. This unique collection of poetry, short stories and prose contains a range of work, composed from 2002-2012. The thematic goal of this undertaking is to ballast as many implicit and explicit meanings as are comprehensible, and to extrapolate a distinct spectrum of latent and straightforward explanations with discernible psycho-analytical accuracy. We all know poetry is truly formless and based on springs of natural inspiration. Thus, we derive our purest inspiration from the natural world and we prune it in its unfiltered, raw state. Poetry is an externality that materializes from thin air.

Abstract:
<p>There is a new beverage container on the market, a bottle made out of pure aluminum as a replacement for the traditional container made out of glass. This new container has the potential to reduce both cost and pollution during transportation, the lighter and stronger construction has every advantage compared to the old one in glass. The new container has every possibility to make it on the market. Some of the biggest brands within the soft drink market already use these bottles in countries without any recycling demands like: Coca-Cola, Heineken and Pepsi. The only thing stopping these brands from the Swedish market is the lack of a functional return system, there is only one company that uses the bottle in Sweden today and they take care of their own used bottles. All their customers get to send in their bottles via postal service and then they transport the bottles to the dump. That system might work when selling an expensive bottle but the cost would far outnumber the profit if Coca-Cola used a similar system.</p><p>By offering a system that deals with the bottle from the time of consumption until the aluminum it’s melting in the oven all problems in handling used bottles are eliminated. With a functional return system new brands can enter the market without having to create a system of their own. This way the need grows with the expansion of the bottles.</p><p>This report describes how a perfect return system should work and the key areas that make it as efficient as it can ever be. The work effort has been focused on the heart of the project: the machine that’s going to reduce the volume and cut the bottles before transportation. A fully functional prototype has been modified and evaluated in the quest for the optimal cutting force.</p><p>With a functional system that helps buyers and users, there is nothing that can stop the new aluminum bottle. It has the potential to completely take over after the glass bottle and eventually compete with the aluminum can.</p>

"Thesis Launch: Helping Students Begin the Undergraduate Honors Thesis Process." Doctoral diss., 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.53540.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: Honors colleges have offered an academically rigorous option for growing numbers of diverse students. This study took place at a large, public university that required undergraduate students to complete a thesis to graduate from the honors college. In 2017, 97% of students who began the honors thesis prior to senior year completed it. Thus, the aim of this study was to help more students begin the honors thesis process early. Thesis Launch was a six-week intervention that was designed to provide support for students in the critical early steps of thesis work such as brainstorming topics, examining professors’ research interests, reaching out to professors, preparing for meetings with potential thesis committee members, and writing a thesis prospectus. Thesis Launch offered web-based resources, weekly emails and text message reminders, and was supplemented by in-person advising options. A mixed methods action research study was conducted to examine: (a) students’ perceptions of barriers that prevented beginning thesis work; (b) self-efficacy towards thesis work; (c) how to scale the intervention using technology; and (d) whether participants began the thesis early. Quantitative data was collected via pre- and post-intervention surveys, journals, and prospectus submissions. Qualitative data came from student interviews, journals, and open-ended questions on the surveys. Quantitative data showed that after students participated in Thesis Launch, they had higher self-efficacy to work with professors, perceived fewer barriers to thesis work, and greater proportions of students began thesis work early. The qualitative data were complementary and showed that participants overcame barriers to thesis initiation, built self-efficacy, preferred an online intervention, and began thesis work early. Findings also showed that a primarily technology-based intervention was preferred by students and showed promise for scaling to a larger audience. Thesis Launch provided a framework for students to begin work on the honors thesis and have mastery experiences to build self-efficacy. Strategies that fostered “small wins” and reflective efforts also assisted in this aim. Participants accomplished tasks tied to thesis work and customized their personal thesis timelines based on work begun during Thesis Launch. Finally, a discussion of limitations, implications for practice and research, and personal reflection was included.<br>Dissertation/Thesis<br>Doctoral Dissertation Educational Leadership and Policy Studies 2019
