Abstract:
The notions of subject matter and aboutness have been objects of considerable attention among philosophers over the last few years. Current theories of subject matter take sentences to be the primary bearers of subject matter: “sentences have aboutness properties if anything has” (Yablo, Aboutness, Princeton University Press, 2014). However, some subsentential expressions can also be thought of as being about something. Moreover, it appears that the subject matters of sentences depend in a systematic way on the aboutness properties of their subsentential components. In this paper, we focus on the question of what predicates are about. We provide an account of predicative subject matter in which subject matters are assigned to predicates in a natural way, and which can be smoothly integrated with some existing accounts of sentential subject matter. We also argue that the notion of predicative subject matter is a worthy object of study, both within the current debate on subject matter and in its own right.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of the study is to look at Chinese English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ organizational strategy use in English writing at universities in Taiwan. One significant area that has been indicated in contrastive rhetoric studies spins around the notion of culturally constructed organizational patterns. It is claimed that second language (L2) writers may have implicit culturally driven presuppositions and values about academic writing in the first language (L1) that may transfer straightforwardly to academic writing in English. Design/methodology/approach – Data were from 50 high- and 50 low-achieving EFL students’ and 50 native English speakers’ (NESs’) written texts, and semi-structured interviews with EFL students and their teachers. Findings – Based on text analysis, when high-achieving EFL students and NESs were compared, they were similar in location of thesis, existence of introduction, existence of topic sentences, macro-level patterns, existence of conclusion, existence of a concluding sentence and existence of a final comment, but different in existence of background information. Nonetheless, it is noted that low-achieving EFL students were quite different from high-achieving EFL students and NESs in several aspects, such as location of thesis, existence of introduction, existence of topic sentences, macro-level patterns, existence of conclusion, existence of a concluding sentence, and existence of a final comment. In addition, the written texts and interview findings suggest that while cultural differences do, in fact, exist, Chinese writers’ English organizational strategy use were to some extent intertwined with their writing experiences and teachers’ writing instructions. The results also suggest the flexibility of writers and multiplicity of writing experiences within a cultural group. Originality/value – The study makes original recommendations for language pedagogy.

Abstract:
Challenges of the falsification processes impact in the information environment on the students’ conscious-ness is raised in the present paper. It shows the experience of teaching the disciplines in the St. Petersburg branch of the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, which aims to form the student’s worldview. The relevance of the topic is due to the modern Russian realities in which the younger generation and the information environment play key roles. The primary aim of the paper is to analyze the pos-sibilities of regulating the influence of falsification in the information environment on the students’ conscious-ness by means of teaching and educational work in higher education. The paper summarizes some of the ob-jectives in the course of the work: conducting a sociological study at the St. Petersburg branch of the Financial University among lecturers; determining how the problem under consideration can be regulated in the class-room / extracurricular work with students; outlining the directions of educational work with students.

This article offers four migration narratives from three states—Brazil, Argentina, and Chile—including biographic approaches and group identities, cultural nostalgia and nationalist resentment. The divergent trajectories of the Dalmatian business tycoons Nicolás Mihanovich in Argentina and Pascual Baburizza in Chile, the celebration of inter-ethnic Austrian-ness in Ijuí (Brazil) vs. the symbolic construction of a “second Poland” by Polish immigrants in Paraná (Brazil) seek to open different windows into the highly complex panorama of Austrian-Hungarian emigration to Latin America. Although approximately 300,000 Habsburg subjects sought there their new homeland, the topic remains underresearched.

The relevance of the research topic is explained by the strong influence of lending on the implementation of reproductive processes in agriculture. Credit resources and their ne-cessity and importance for agricultural production make it necessary to form a special system of crediting agricultural producers, adequate to the current economic situation. The current state of the agricultural economy in 2019-2022 does not favor the dynamic development of the busi-ness community, including agricultural producers, in this regard, measures of state support for both small and large farms are of particular importance, which accordingly required certain leg-islative innovations of the agro-industrial complex.

It is particularly fitting that Du Bois Review would publish a special feature titled “Varieties of Responses to Stigmatization: Macro, Meso, and Micro Dimensions.” In many ways, we can consider the management of stigma to be a quintessentially Du Bois topic. In his classical writings on double consciousness, this pioneering social theorist (2007) captured the complex psychological experience of managing a life where one feels divided within oneself. He focused specifically on African American identity defined by the tension of being two at once (American and Black): “The Negro ever feels his two-ness—an American, a Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder” (p. 3).

Abstract:
The article draws a comparison of sources on Kryashen selfidentification from the early twentieth and early twenty-first century. I use R. Jenkins’ theory on self-identification and categorization as inside and outside descriptions of groups to understand the specificity of Kryashen self-perception. While there is a variety of works on the topic of Kryashen identity, the factor of an “external gaze” at their community is less studied. Drawing upon a thematic analysis of texts by Kryashen activist intellectuals D.G. Grigoryev (1906) and N.V. Mamakov (2018), I make it clear that these authors consider Kryashens to be a separate Orthodox Christian people that faces institutional imposition of “Tatar-ness”, so they appeal to the state and the Russian Church in defense of their own identity. They also highlight the role of intelligentsia in consolidation of Kryashen identity and point that Kryashens are not a well-known people in Russia. Existent differences between the texts are generally explained as historical and genre particularities. Expressions of Kryashen social activity on the topic of their identity represent a unique field of research for today’s Russia, a detailed study of which facilitates deepening of theoretical comprehension of self-identification vs. categorization clashes, the role of rejection of expected social roles in identity.

Abstract:
The article examines aspects of the formation of elements of national conscious-ness of younger schoolchildren in the process of learning the Ukrainian language (on the basis of the ethical views of Ivan Ohiienko); the ways and methods of fostering patriotism of elementary school students and improving the practical preparation of teachers for working with children are outlined; the issue of national-patriotic educa-tion is highlighted, the conditions for the formation of Ukrainian national conscious-ness are indicated; Ivan Ohiienko’s views on the issue of spiritual and moral educa-tion of younger schoolchildren are summarized; the main contradictions aff ecting the upbringing of children are revealed. The topic of the study is devoted to the problem of pedagogical support for the development of elements of national consciousness of elementary school students. In order to solve it, the model of conscious mastery of national values by younger school-children is substantiated. On the basis of this model, the structural components of the system of pedagogical support for the development of the national consciousness of the younger schoolboy’s personality, the conditions for its eff ective functioning, are deter-mined; a complex of factors infl uencing the positive attitude of younger schoolchildren to the values of Ukrainian culture, the hierarchy of motives for their self-formation by students is established; the main theoretical and methodical approaches to the design of the nationally and personally oriented educational process in primary grades are consid-ered; the dynamics of the development of national consciousness and self-awareness of younger schoolchildren in the process of education and upbringing are revealed

Abstract:
The article addresses the issue of organizing project-based activities in the educational space of higher educa-tion as one of the indicators of the quality of academic independence among future lawyers. To achieve the objectives set forth, the following research methods were employed: theoretical methods (analysis of literature related to the research topic and the regulatory and legislative framework governing educational activities in higher education institutions), empirical methods (content analysis of educational organizations’ websites and monographic research), as well as the author’s pedagogical experience. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that the developed project assignments, taking into account the specifics of the discipline’s work program, can later be used in conducting training sessions for law students. The theoretical and practical significance of the research lies in the theoretical justification of the application of project tasks and confirmation of their effective-ness: all presented tasks reflecting the specifics of the organization of project activities can be applied in the pedagogical process.

Abstract This article explores protection efforts that have arisen in the New York City metropolitan area around the monk parakeet, a nonnative bird that has achieved a broad distribution outside its native habitat range. In some urban regions in which populations are established, controversy has developed around the parakeets’ use of utility infrastructure and potential impacts on native species and agricultural crops. This case provides an opportunity to explore animal protection rhetoric about nonnative species, an understudied topic, considering the great extent to which species have become established in ecosystems outside their natural ranges and the persistence of public affinity for nonnative plants and wildlife. This article identifies four major frames through which advocates have delivered the birds to public and legal audiences and considers how they have mobilized and handled notions of “nonnative-ness” in their advocacy work.

Abstract:
This chapter is about collective identity and how practitioners define this highly complex topic. Two main patterns emerge from the corpus. Practitioners’ main concerns while discussing the concept of ‘European’ identity are as follows: to differentiate between European neighbours and the neighbours of Europe, and to account for the European credentials of the South Caucasus or Kazakhstan. In addressing differentiation between the neighbours, practitioners draw on geography, culture, history and economic ties to distinguish between countries which are in Europe and those which are not. At the same time practitioners make explicit distinctions between the key EU policies: the European Neighbourhood Policy and the enlargement policy. They also build up the category of the ‘European’. When they offer accounts of the South Caucasus and Kazakhstan, one practitioner relies on a heredity account of the European civilization, while others seek to justify, in different ways, the European-ness of the Caucasus and potentially Kazakhstan.

Abstract:
Abstract The relationship between technology and music production (or its corollary consumption) is unquestionably one of a means and end of utility. This commonly understood assumption, however, needs to be addressed more adequately by considering the notion that music production and consumption are fundamentally active human processes within a nest of social material conditions, technology being an important component. These provide a context, social and cultural in the first instance, by which musical acts or performances are deemed significant through time. This chapter explores some of these conditions in the Philippine popular music industries, particularly by examining the entry of various music technologies that moved the priorities of the industries to certain ends, and that consequently rippled through in the busy-ness of musicians, as they flowed into and engaged with them. Musical idioms resulted from the flows. Because there is no comprehensive research on this topic to date, it is only expedient to offer a broad view to the problem from a cultural historical standpoint.

Abstract:
In the past decade I have received several hundred letters of inquiry from students asking for advice about education and careers. Most want to know how to combine their passion for the natural world with formal education in order to craft a useful life. The letters and e-mails are often written in a tone of frustration. An undergraduate biology major, for example, writes: “I have been researching my options, and I have come to the conclusions [sic] that there are quite a number of programs labeled ‘conservation biology’ or ‘environmental studies’ around the country. It is fairly easy to become lost in a sea of them. I attended the Society for Conservation Biology meeting in Maryland, but failed to find any prospective advisors. Would you have any advice to offer on this topic?” Similarly, a recent Ph.D. in wildlife biology writes: “I am struggling to translate my professional training into a life well lived that in some way might contribute to preserving the natural world and not just documenting its decline. . . . My professional training did not prepare me well for these tasks.” Dozens of other letters have the same plaintive themes. The problem is not simply that there are many more students who want practical careers in environmental work than those who find them. The deeper problem has to do with the experience of students as they pass through the system of higher education. Whatever they once may have been, institutions of higher education have become vast and expensively operated machines much like any for-profit corporation. Students are fed through a conveyor belt of requirements, large classes, deadlines, and general busy-ness. What they learn seldom adds up to anything like a coherent, ecologically solvent worldview. The scale of most institutions is not conducive to humane interaction. Seldom encouraged to discern an inner calling, students are more often counseled to find secure careers that pay well. Nonetheless, many students still feel a calling toward service that runs counter to the incentives, values, and structure of their formal education.

Abstract:
The present paper seeks to investigate the historical portraits of Milutin on mural paintings in Serbia, highlighting the changes of the ico- nography of royal portrait during the 13th century and the first decades of the 14th century. Due to his favorable political position, the ruler expanded his activity, both in political and artistical areas. It is useful then to touch upon some historical events and political relationship in the period under consideration. Without losing sight on different aspects, I have chosen to focus on the image of Serbian ruler from his childhood, represented on Sopoćani´s frescoes in the sixties of the 13th century, to the last portrait in Gračanica, finished a few days before his death in 1321. I will describe the portraits of Milutin, focusing my attention on expression of Milutin´s prop- aganda in monumental art, thus the representation of royal costumes, royal insignia and the figures surrounding him. Therefore, I will examine the por- traits of Milutin in the most representative churches like Sopoćani, Arilje, Prizren, Studenica, Gračanica, Staro Nagoričino and Chilandar Monastery. The topic offers by way of comparison some general observations on the image of Milutin as ruler. It also deals with the representation of the holi- ness of rulers in visual sources. I shall examine the luxury court attire of the ruler and of his spouse Simonis and describe the visual expressions used to represent the sovereignty of Milutin.
