Abstract:
This article explores the features and trends in inbound and outbound tourism flows between Ukraine and the Baltic Sea region (BSR) countries in 2012—2019. The research question is whether inbound or outbound tourism prevailed and how visa-free travel to the Schengen Area affected the number of Ukrainians travelling to the Baltic Sea Region. Two data sources were used in the study. These are the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index of the World Economic Forum and data from the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine on the number of foreign citizens visiting Ukraine and the number of Ukrainians travelling abroad. The study employs the statistical methods of structural shifts analysis, time series analysis, and graphical visualization. The findings indicate that Ukrainian outbound tourism was growing steadily over the study period, whilst visa-free travel to the Schengen Area had no statistically significant impact on the number of outbound tourists from Ukraine to the BSR. Outbound tourism flow prevailed over inbound. The number of inbound tourists to Ukraine sharply declined after 2013 because of the socio-political situation in the country. The analysis reveals significant changes in inbound and outbound tourism flow structures. The COVID-19 pandemic is shown to be a critical factor influencing the current state and prospects of the tourism industry.

Abstract:
This paper studies aggregate inbound and outbound tourist demand in Europe for 1995-2015 with a new panel quantile regression approach. It employs tourist arrivals, tourist receipts and tourist expenditure. Besides real domestic income and real exchange rate, the demand is instrumented with environmental degradation and trade openness. Results show that tourism behaves like a normal good when tourist arrivals are used as a predictor of demand and a luxury good when tourism revenue is used instead. Conversely, tourism behaves like an inferior good when tourist expenditure is used. The results suggest that for inbound tourism in Europe to remain competitive, prices should be low to attract inbound tourism while tourism expenditure subsidization programmes should take place for European residents to be able to afford outbound tourism.

Abstract:
Inbound tourism has its own characteristics, which makes it economically attractive for any country in the world. Its development has positive effect on stimulating the investment process, the structure of the balance of payments, budget revenues at various levels, the welfare of the population, the development of infrastructure in the regions etc. The investigation of incoming, outgoing and domestic tourist flow in the tourist market of Ukraine has identified trends in their development during the recent years. The predominance of the outbound tourist flow in the structure of the general tourist flow testified the need to concentrate the state policy in the field of tourism in the direction of stimulating domestic and inbound tourism, which will allow to obtain positive socio-economic consequences from their development. The analysis of the incoming tourist flow for travelling shows the types of tourism in which Ukraine can currently compete in the international tourist market, provided that the corresponding competitive advantages are strengthened and reinforced. It can also reorient some outbound tourists to domestic destinations. Inbound tourist flow in Ukraine is characterized by uneven tourist attractiveness of different regions of Ukraine among foreign tourists. This does not allow to implement completely the tourism potential of certain regions. The analysis of the incoming tourist flow structure by the countries of arrival of foreign tourists make it possible to identify the priority geographical directions of the international marketing policy for promotion of the national tourist product. The impact of Covid-19 on inbound tourist flows to Ukraine in recent years is considered, as well as a number of key issues hindering the development of domestic inbound tourism over the past decade. This allows us to identify the key tools to stimulate the development of inbound tourism in Ukraine. They are based on the optimization of tax policy in the field of tourism, public funding for the modernization of tourist infrastructure, optimization of tourist formalities, marketing strategy to promote the national tourist product at the international level and its information support.

Compiling a world overview of outbound tourism volumes is not an easy task, as data are limited and fragmented. In this article data on inbound tourism by region of origin are used to estimate a matrix of inbound–outbound tourism flows. Based on this information worldwide international tourist arrivals by region of origin and destination are analysed for the period 1990–2000. Aggregated data are presented on the (sub-) regional level and thus a useful framework is provided for understanding tourism flows in the world, and to and from the various (sub-)regions over time.

Abstract:
Compared with China’s domestic and outbound tourism, China’s inbound tourism has developed relatively slowly. An understanding of cultural similarities and differences can support destination managers in formulating strategies and increase the satisfaction of inbound tourists. As one of the best tourist cities in China, Chengdu is an important destination for inbound tourists. Meanwhile, American tourists are the major source of tourists for Chengdu’s inbound tourism. Based on the Cultural Dimensions Theory proposed by Hofstede, this research focuses on a cross-cultural comparison of two important markets for Chengdu tourism: Chinese and American tourists. In addition, electronic word-of-mouth (E-WOM) has become an important source of tourist information, the analysis of E-WOM may provide more insights into users’ feelings than questionnaires. This study uses content analysis to quantify online reviews and importance performance analysis to compare the importance and satisfaction of Chinese and American tourists with destination attributes. The results clearly show the comparison between the two groups in destination assessment.

Abstract:
According to UNWTO standards, tourism takes the forms of domestic and international tourism. International tourism is subdivided into inbound and outbound tourism. The statistics of inbound tourism comprises two basic sections: statistics of tourist arrivals and statistics of tourism receipts. The inbound tourism in Poland and Ukraine is researched in this article. It is interesting to analyze the inbound tourism in the neighbouring countries, i.e. Poland and Ukraine, taking into account the “split in time” similarities in the development of the tourism market in these countries, their place in the world tourist flows, as well as attempts of Ukraine to repeat Poland’s experience in its integration into the EU. The aim of this paper is to conduct a comparative analysis of inbound tourist flows in Ukraine and Poland, as well as to reveal the factors influencing tourist arrivals, receipts and profitability as the ratio of the last two. The number and structure of tourist arrivals to Poland and Ukraine in 2000–2016 are analyzed. It was assumed that tourists’ exchange between neighbouring countries probably depends on the length of common land border. To test this assumption, the criterion χ² was used, which is also called the criterion of independence, consistency and homogeneity. The receipts from inbound tourism in above-mentioned countries during the same period of time are estimated. By applying the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the tourism receipts are recalculated for the prices of 2000. The profitability of inbound tourism in Poland and Ukraine in 2013 and 2016 is calculated. The factors influencing tourism receipts and profitability of inbound tourism are described.

Particular attention is paid to the statistics of inbound and outbound tourism of the UK in recent years; described in detail are the most popular tourist routes, including not only historical and cultural sites, but also the basic directions of business, sports and music tourism. Using domestic and foreign sources (books, periodicals, electronic resources), the author gives a detailed description of the tourist business in the UK as one of the largest sectors of the economy, but also notes that the historical facts and recent data indicate significant prospects for further sustainable development of tourist interest to the UK, its cultural heritage and modern achievements in science, industry, business. It is likely that the forms of organization of tourism in the United Kingdom will change and improve, but the flow of tourists to the UK will not dry up, including from Russia. At the heart of it will remain the dominant business, educational and cognitive forms of tourism.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the inbound and outbound medical tourism in the UK to determine if the UK can be considered as a net exporter of health services as well as the impact of the 2007 global economic crisis, diaspora populations and the number of UK expats on medical tourism figures. Design/methodology/approach Using microdata drawn from the International Passenger Survey (2000-2016), the authors estimate the flows, number of nights and expenditure of tourists looking for medical treatment who complete international visits of less than 12 months’ duration to and from the UK. The authors also analyse the main destinations of UK residents, the country of origin of overseas residents and the particular case of British expats. Findings The results show the upward trend of inbound and outbound patients, the strong seasonality in outbound patients, and the significant increase in the levels of expenditure of overseas residents since 2005. Poland, France, Hungary and India are the chosen countries by UK residents to be treated, whereas Irish Republic, Spain, France, Gibraltar and the United Arab Emirates are the main countries providing inbound health patients. However, the processes of migration explain full or partly the inbound and outbound flows found for some countries. Originality/value This study offers a critical insight into inbound and outbound medical flows, demonstrating both the scope for and limitations to market development in this area.

Abstract:
The materials of the paper refer to the grouping and rating of countries which are donors of international tourism in order to determine the activity of marketing efforts in the field of image formation of the Russian Federation as a country favorable for tourism. The article contains generalized mixed trends affecting inbound tourism, which formed in restrictive political and economic policies imposed on Russia by the EU, the US and other countries. In order to optimize the form and content of measures to promote the tourist image of Russia and to determine the priority and the most important geographical areas for the implementation of these measures the analysis was conducted according to the following criteria: volume of outbound tourist flows of foreign countries; the growth rate of outbound tourist flows of foreign countries; tourism activity of the populations of foreign countries; number of received foreign tourists by Russian according to their origin. The results of the analysis, which is also reflected in the materials of the article, make possible to distinguish four groups of countries on the trends in international outbound tourist flows, three groups of countries according to the trends in inbound flows in Russia, 4 groups of countries for the development of outbound tourist flows to Russia in the first half of the year 2014 in relation to the 1st half of 2013, four groups of countries on the activity of marketing efforts and specialization in promotion of Russian tourist product on the market. On the basis of these groups, a list of priority geographic areas to enhance marketing efforts to create a tourist image of the Russian Federation is suggested and also outlined are the directions and forms of work on priority markets in foreign countries.

Abstract:
In the context of the Belt & Road Initiative (BRI), China attaches great importance to tourism diplomacy with the South Pacific Island Countries (SPIC). The study of the relationship between tourism and trade is therefore of great significance for the further development of bilateral political and economic cooperation. This paper selected data on the inbound and outbound tourism, as well as import and export trade, between China and SPIC in the period 1998-2017, and used econometric methods to demonstrate the interconnections. The results show that there is a positive long-term equilibrium relationship between passenger flow and import and export trade of China and SPIC. Under the influence of policies, the interaction between inbound and outbound tourism and import and export trade is characterized by periodic fluctuations. China’s outbound tourism to SPIC plays a stronger role to import trade than to export trade. From the analysis of two sections, major events have a moderating effect on the proportion of SPIC tourists and trade dependence on SPIC, while both of the proportion of Chinese tourists and their trade dependence on China are on the rise, and these two have a pulling effect for each other.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the place and role domestic and inbound tourism in the current development of Russia. According to the World Tourism Organization, domestic tourism has two forms - internal national and international inbound tourism. But the world theoretical concepts have shifted ahead much from such a simplified understanding of the functional structure of domestic tourism. The current trend is the transition to a well-planned and organized model of domestic tourism development from the simple promotion of inbound tourism to focused strategy of its planning at the national policy level. In Korea, such direction has been named «Intrabound tourism». In Russia, however, the importance and necessity of development of inbound and domestic tourism, attracting foreign tourists are still being discussed at all levels, but any significant measures and effective programs was not implemented, and those that accepted, for the most part ineffective. Ignoring the problems of inbound and domestic tourism consist in primarily orientation of the current normative and law framework «on outbound operator». And even in a new project of Amendments into the Law «About bases of tourist activity» can´t to completely move away from this vector. The survey of experts working directly in the tourism industry of the Central Federal District allows to identify the nine problems of development domestic and inbound tourism, common to each region. They are described in detail in the article. Also substantial list of major events, a comprehensive approach to the implementation of which will in the foreseeable future significantly improve sphere of domestic tourism in the Central Russia is offered. The need to develop a system of state regulation and support of tourist activity should be noted as the most important recommendations for the development of tourism in the Central Federal District.

Abstract:
The article substantiates the relevance of the issues in question, which have been exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic and provides a brief overview of the scientific and practical sources, as well as a description of current research related to both traditional methods of statistical accounting of tourist travel and methods based on the use of big data sources. The review shows current methodology as well as different suggestions, encountered in various research studies, on how to assess inbound, outbound and domestic travel. The evolution of Rosstat’s approaches to accounting for the number of inbound and outbound trips has been analyzed, and certain adjustments to existing methods relating to the accounting of organized and unorganized trips have been proposed. The results of calculations illustrating the predominance of unorganized tourism when making inbound and outbound trips are presented. In general, it is concluded that the most difficult is the comprehensive monitoring of internal travel. Three possible approaches to the accounting of trips are shown. The option of using the approach to accounting for domestic tourist travel based on monitoring of passenger traffic, which is consistent with international recommendations and the existing classification group «Tourism» in our country, is proposed. In addition, the option of accounting for domestic regional tourist trips based on official forms of reporting is shown. It is the author’s opinion that the implementation of the reasoned proposals should serve to improve the reliability and objectivity of statistics on tourist travel. This, in turn, will create the conditions for improving measures to support the tourism sector of the economy, particularly necessary in the economic crisis triggered by the coronavirus pandemic.

Abstract:
Seasonality is a major issue for sustainable tourism as it governs the optimal use of investment, infrastructure and human capital. Given the increasing numerical and financial significance of Chinese outbound tourism, the ex-Yugoslavia (ex-Yu) countries, partaking in the Belt and Road Initiative, are presented with a potential boost to their Tourism and Travel Industry (T&T) by attracting Chinese travelers during the low season. In an attempt to provide an answer to the RQ and justify grounds for future research and efforts towards developing content and services for Chinese travelers, to be undertaken mostly by Tourism Boards and DMOs in ex-Yugoslavia, this paper explores several aspects: The importance of the T&T in the 6 ex-Yu countries, with focus on the Economic indicators; within the Triple Bottom Line’s (TBL) theme of Seasonality, the existence of meaningful overlaps or mismatches between trends in inbound tourism across ex-Yugoslavia countries and trends in China’s outbound tourism; if meaningful mismatches exist, especially in ex-Yu low seasons, could Chinese tourists be an asset? Although the focus is on the Economic dimension of the TBL through its theme of Seasonality, the other two dimensions, Social and Environmental, are also considered; potential effects and interactions of the Viable, Equitable and Bearable sub-dimensions are also discussed. The final findings present a very significant mismatch, with extreme gaps in trends between the ex-Yu countries’ inbound tourism in low seasons and the corresponding Chinese outbound tourism, the latter presenting very strong shoulders, almost matching the values of high, or even peak, season. In a scenario projecting a range of 0.04–0.38% of Chinese outbound tourists visiting ex-Yu countries, benchmarked vs. January 2018 values, indicates the statistical significance of the potential boost to the low season, with important growth rates for all countries except Croatia and Slovenia for the 0.04% case.

Purpose Focuses on the social and demographic features of inbound and outbound Russian travelers, in particular, on target groups of travelers and the challenges they face in Russia. Design/methodology/approach Draws on analysis of Synovate Comcon Russian Target Group Index and TNS Marketing Index databases, Rosstat data, expert round table discussion with author participation and observation and interviews in tourist-related sites during 2014-2015. Findings The most important factors for domestic tourism are family status, employment, income and education. Demographic target groups for internal tourism in Russia include: low-income retired persons; groups of students; working qualified experts and family travelers. The most important factors affecting external travel are region of residence, the size of the city and income status. Political challenges (including the closure of Russians of destinations in Egypt and Turkey) tend to reinforce economic crisis and national currency depreciation. Nevertheless, forecasts of industry development predict a slow recovery over the next few years up to 2019. Originality/value Outlines the demographic and social target groups of inbound and outbound Russian travelers described in the context of new circumstances in Russia. Abstract:
As the importance of tourism managements is becoming recognized worldwide, many scholars start talking about tourist satisfaction as the main driver of the tourism sector. Satisfaction measurement and determination of its antecedents has become a field for tourism research and scientific discussion. Tourist satisfaction indices were started to elaborate for many countries (e.g., Malaysia, Mexico, Hong Kong, Croatia, etc.); however, considering satisfaction as a multifaceted construct, every single case has to be viewed and assessed separately. Achieving to complement to the body of knowledge, this manuscript proposes a holistic tourist satisfaction index model for Lithuania. The paper aims to aggregate the previously approved tourist satisfaction indices in a framework of Lithuania into a holistic model to be applied regarding the existing circumstances. The proposed model is a final step of the numerous previous researches, aggregating their results and proposing guidelines for tourist satisfaction improvement and loyalty assurance in a bundle of possible tourism-related situations regarding Lithuania as a place. The proposed holistic tourist satisfaction index model encompasses six previously elaborated models: Inbound tourist satisfaction index model; Emigrants’ satisfaction index model; Outbound tourist satisfaction index model; The model of Lithuanian tourist satisfaction with European summer holiday destinations index; Local tourist satisfaction index model; and Rural tourist satisfaction index model; therefore, guidelines for any tourismrelated situation, whether it was domestic (local), inbound, or outbound tourism, are provided. Moreover, as in every situation, different antecedents of tourist satisfaction were determined; the holistic model stops practitioners, as well as scholars from taking unavailing decisions.

The article is devoted to deepening the theoretical foundations of medical tourism development in Ukraine and substantiation of the multiplier effect of medical tourism. To this end, the four main motives of medical tourism in the world are considered (lower cost of treatment and diagnosis in another country; more modern medical technologies abroad; highly qualified medical care and service; time factor (with a long wait for medical treatment in their country)) main directions of medical tourism (inbound medical tourism and outbound medical tourism). It is established that at this stage of development of our country there is no regulatory regulation of medical tourism. There are only certain non-governmental organizations whose activities are aimed at: 1) development of medical tourism and involvement in the field of medical tourism of doctors interested in its development: Medical Tourism Association (UAMT) (established in 2013); 2) search for a clinic for a potential patient and provide such clinics with proposals to attract the best price experience and conditions to solve a problem (Medical Tourism Exchange, established in 2015). The reasons for the rapid development of the medical tourism industry in Ukraine are presented, the structure of outbound tourism in Ukraine by service providers is studied. Trends in the development of inbound medical tourism are analyzed. The analysis of the state of outbound and inbound medical tourism helped to generalize and highlight the main trends in the medical tourism market in Ukraine and the prerequisites for further development of its own segment of medical tourism, as well as to identify existing limitations and issues. Chinese inbound tourism growth peaked in 2012 and in following years, arrivals have exhibited a downward trend. Over the same time Chinese outbound tourism has increased significantly and by 2016 the number of Chinese outbound tourists (52.7 million) was nearly twice that of international arrivals to China (28.1 million) (CTA, 2018). The aim of this paper is to identify the determinants of international tourists visiting China based on destination attributes. For the purposes of this research, Australia was selected as a study site on the grounds that China has been a popular destination for Australian residents. This study examines a range of behavioral factors that may affect intentions to travel to China including: past travel experience to China; perceptions of overseas destination attributes; beliefs in China’s ability to satisfy the needs and constraints that appear to prevent Australian residents from traveling to China; and tourists’ intentions to visit or revisit. Data collected from Australian residents on aspects of travel to China included perceptions, beliefs, constraints, information sources, and past experience. The research shows that past experience was positively associated with intention to visit or revisit. Five constraint factors were identified. Based on these findings, the study discusses practical implications for management and government officials needed to boost Chinese inbound tourism.

Abstract:
The article examines the impact of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) pandemic on the tourism and hospitality industry. Based on an assessment of the scale of losses incurred by enterprises in this sector of the economy in an unfavorable epidemiological situation, it was concluded that tourism was among the industries most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The identified problems faced by small and medium-sized businesses from among tour operators and travel agencies confirmed the correctness of the measures of state support provided by the state to this sector of the economy. A comparative analysis of the development of the tourism sector in 2019 and 2020 in terms of such parameters as the number of inbound and outbound trips of citizens, the volume of demand for tourism services, made it possible to assess the threats and opportunities for the functioning of the tourism sector during the pandemic for the Russian economy and suggest that the recovery of the tourism industry it may take at least three years. There have been illustrated the diagrams comparing the demand for outbound and inbound tourism in 2019 and 2020, the demand for tourist services among different strata of the population, and hotel occupancy in Russia. In addition to identifying general factors that hinder the balanced growth of the Russian market of tourist services, the problem of information asymmetry was stated, which hinders the realization of the tourist potential in the regions: lack/ insufficient data, or distorted data on the tourism potential in certain territories. The highlighted trends in the development of the Russian tourism industry in the current conditions and promising trends in the tourism and hospitality industry include greening, digitalization, individualization of both demand and supply, an orientation towards domestic tourism.

Abstract:
Introduction. China is located in Central and East Asia. The vast territory of the state, covering the highest mountainous regions, vast deserts and coastal plains, determines the variety of natural conditions for tourism, as well as the border neighborhood with a large number of countries. China's seaside location is extremely advantageous in terms of tourism. At present, through the seas, China provides access to the countries of the Asia-Pacific region and the whole world. The sea and coastal areas are used to organize coastal tourism. Increasingly, China's maritime waters and ports are used for cruise tourism. China has an advantageous geographical position in relation to the segments of the world tourism market. It is surrounded by countries characterized by the active development of outbound tourism, which have a negative tourist balance - Japan, Taiwan, Republic of Korea. The article analyzes the differences in the development of inbound tourism in the cities of China, provides a theoretical basis for the development of inbound tourism in cities. The comparative method is used to analyze the current state of differences in the development of inbound tourism in the key tourist cities of China and a comparative study of the influence and role of regional and economic factors on the development of inbound tourism in cities of China. Methods. In the process of working on the article, first of all, such methods of scientific research as analysis and synthesis were used, which made it possible to determine the optimal balance of forces and means necessary for the development of international tourism in China. Through these methods, connections were established between individual events and facts. In addition, other general scientific methods were used: comparative analytical methods, methods of grouping and classification, general scientific methods of a systematic approach to the study of economic phenomena. Results and discussions. Provided statistics show that the current development of inbound tourism in China is very different, and the regional concentration is very noticeable. The cities with the best development of inbound tourism are mainly located in the eastern region, external economic factors have the greatest impact on the development of inbound tourism in cities, followed by tourism products and the influence of the location distance is less. Conclusion. Tourism development is not only a matter of the tourism sector. The development of inbound tourism is inextricably linked with external economic and trade factors, therefore, in the practice of developing inbound tourism in cities, it is necessary not only to focus on the development of tourism products, but also to develop foreign economic and trade activities and business tourism. An important factor is also the fact that actively developing tourism contributes to an increase in the number of jobs

Abstract:
The rise of radiofrequency scanner technology has led to its potential application in the observation of people’s movements. This study used a Wi-Fi scanner device to track tourists’ traveling behavior in Hokkaido’s tourism area, which occupies a large region that features a unique natural landscape. Inbound tourists have significantly increased in recent years; thus, tourism’s sustainability is considered to be important for maintaining the tourism atmosphere in the long term. Using internet-enabled technology to conduct extensive area surveys can overcome the limitations imposed by conventional methods. This study aims to use digital footprint data to describe and understand traveler mobility in a large tourism area in Hokkaido. Association rule mining (ARM)—a machine learning methodology—was performed on a large dataset of transactions to identify the rules that link destinations visited by tourists. This process resulted in the discovery of traveling patterns that revealed the association rules between destinations, and the attractiveness of the destinations was scored on the basis of visiting frequency, with both inbound and outbound movements considered. A visualization method was used to illustrate the relationships between destinations and simplify the mathematical descriptions of traveler mobility in an attractive tourism area. Hence, mining the attractiveness of destinations in a large tourism area using an ARM method integrated with a Wi-Fi mobility tracking approach can provide accurate information that forms a basis for developing sustainable destination management and tourism policies.

Abstract:
The power law is considered one of the most enduring regularities in human geography. This article aims to develop an understanding of the circumstances that may result in the power law distribution in the geography of tourism activities. The finite Polya urn process is adopted as a device to model the preferential attachment process in the flow of tourists. The model generates a rank-size distribution of tourism regions along with intuitively appealing parameters. Empirically examined using two independent sets of Australian inbound and outbound tourism data, results show that the rank-size distribution emerging from the finite Polya urn process is a superior fit to the conventional power law curve. This rank-size distribution (termed the Polya urn process model of visitor distribution) is compatible with tourist behaviors such as habit persistence and word-of-mouth effects, and can be adopted by tourism modelers to predict and efficiently summarize the spatiality of tourism.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the link between political ideology and the management of tourism in countries. The authors stipulate that the predominant political ideology in the country influences the nature and logic of state interventions in the tourism industry. Design/methodology/approach The paper elaborates several case studies from various countries – Bulgaria, Cyprus, Scandinavia, Russia, USA, China, Japan, Indonesia, and North Korea. Findings Countries with predominant (neo)liberal ideology do not typically interfere in tourism regulation, while nationalism leads governments to stimulate inbound and domestic tourism. Communist ideological approaches tend to be burdensome, inhibiting growth while stressing the promotion of the socialist achievements of a country. Countries that are traditionally thought of as social democratic have been evolving in recent years to regulate tourism in ways that are more liberal in nature than social democratic. Practical implications Political ideologies shape the acceptability of government support for private tourist companies, legislation in field of tourism, limitation/stimulation of inbound/outbound tourist flows. For the future the authors expect greater politicisation of tourism, active tourism “wars” between countries, greater control of governments on populations, thriving nationalism, “aggressive” environmentalism. Originality/value This is one of the first papers to discuss the impact of the political ideology on the management of tourism at the national level.

When measuring international tourism, in addition to tracking tourism flows there is also a clear interest in quantifying the economic value. The first indicators in this respect (although with limitations) are the international tourism receipts earned by destinations in the case of inbound tourism and the international tourism expenditure by residents of generating markets in the case of outbound tourism. Most countries report both indicators on a regular basis within the framework of the balance of payments. This issue's ‘Databank’ analyses international tourism receipts, international tourism expenditure and the resulting international tourism balance for the various destination and origin regions, subregions and countries of the world.

Abstract:
The travel distance of international journeys critically determines our reliance on different transportation modes and the associated carbon intensity. This study quantified the influence of macrolevel determinants to the inbound and outbound average distance per visitor from a panel data of 152 countries using spatial econometric analysis. Results confirmed that national development and transport capacity assisted the spatial expansion of outbound travel, while tourism competitiveness, geographic attributes, and institutional arrangements regarding people’s mobility facilitate inbound visits from distant source markets. A high level of heterogeneity was found across five continents where the distance friction effect through geographic barrier, transport accessibility, and the freedom of people’s movement exhibited a different level of influences. To manage the spatial expansion of international travels for a sustainable transport future, a strong geopolitical integration system across countries within the region and adjustments to the aviation capacity to disfavor long-haul flights have been proposed.

The study focuses on the main trends in the tourism industry of the Novosibirsk region. It is shown that the regional industry is developing in line with the national trends and falls with the general development trends of domestic and inbound tourism set forth in the documents of strategic development at the federal and sub-federal levels. The article discusses the aspects of the tourism industry, which determine the specifics of its functioning related to the geographical concentration, heterogeneity, and multiplicity of participants as well as the complex nature of the tourist product. It is concluded that the application of cluster approach to tourism development seems rather appropriate. The work determines priority types of tourism and clusters to be formed and developed in the Novosibirsk region. Besides, the article describes the factors, opportunities and restrictions for tourism development in Novosibirsk region in terms of demand. It has been shown that the expectations regarding the development of domestic tourism against the background of global failure of international passenger traffic are only partially justified since hardly can Russian domestic tourism be an equivalent substitution for the outbound tourism. Under these circumstances, the cluster tourism policy should mainly focus on the following priority directions: domestic and mainly short-term tourism; increase in the activity of tour operators in the formation of regional tourist products; development of tourism and infrastructure facilities.

Abstract:
Work-life balance is passé, enter work-life choices. But the next question arises, is this concept applicable to every working individual? Goa is predominantly a tourist destination, which thrives on inbound tourism through its extensive dependency on chartered flights, EDM festivals and as a wedding destination. However this study focuses on career oriented men and women, as well as entrepreneurs who work for the tourism industry in Goa. Their focus is on providing travel solutions in terms of visa assistance, booking air travel, planning itineraries. In a nutshell their orientation is towards outbound travel. These individuals have also made some serious choices in life to achieve what they wanted in their professional front. The study tries to identify the human resource issues that are prevalent in the micro, small and medium enterprises that they work with. This also calls for defining the term small and medium tourism enterprises (SMTE). Issues may be translated into remuneration, ethical aspects, relocation, and working hours. The survey responses will reveal the work-life choices made in their business or career.

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to identify the factors influencing Chinese outbound tourists’ perceptions of safety in Thailand. A media coverage analysis compares the safety perceptions of visitors and non-visitors. Design/methodology/approach A mixed-methods approach was adopted. Based on a content analysis of 204 news items related to safety incidents in Thailand, this paper divides the factors of safety perception into four dimensions. The quantitative data were gathered by self-administered questionnaires from 370 visitors who have previously visited Thailand and 407 potential visitors yet to visit Thailand. Findings The results demonstrated significant differences in the safety perceptions of visitors and non-visitors, indicating non-visitors’ fear of uncertainty and intolerance of the exotic. The study also confirmed social-demographic characteristics influence destination safety perceptions. For non-visitors, safety issues tend to have a negative influence on future visit intention, but those with previous travel experience have less concerns. Research limitations/implications The findings provide valuable insights to industry practice. More publicity campaigns within the Chinese media may reduce the spillover effects of crisis events and correct the potentially inaccurate images of disease and terrorism risk. Thai government is suggested to develop the Chinese inbound market, improve the quality of tourism infrastructure and standardisation and efficiency of tourism services. Originality/value The media plays a significant role in destination image, tourist decision-making and safety measures imposed by governments. This study identified the factors influencing Chinese outbound tourists’ perceptions of safety in Thailand through an analysis of media coverage. The study provides a better understanding of the differences in safety perceptions between visitors and non-visitors to Thailand. The segmentation of visitors and non-visitors also may help destination managers to cater to differing expectations of safety.

Abstract:
Accessibility is of major importance for tourism and trade development in Eastern Aegean Sea islands, Greece. In particular, the island of Chios is heavily dependent on Athens International Airport for both its inbound and outbound tourism. On the other hand, the International Airport of Izmir in Turkey, located much closer to the island, serves several European destinations. Crossing the borders in an intermodal transport context may lead to a substantial air travel alternative for Chios, thus improving its accessibility and potential for tourism development. A discrete choice analysis, based on primary data research regarding travel scenarios from Chios to ten main European airports-destinations, shows the potential for new traffic flows in addition to the existing ones. Airport utility maximization differences observed among various social groups is also noteworthy.

Abstract:
This research deals with the impact of intensity of inbound and outbound tourism on the sphere of passenger air carriages, based on the dataset that covers the indicators across different economic regions over the period of 2015-2017. The results based on building a correlation-regression model have shown that there is a close connection between tourism development and passenger carriages intensity. Verification of the model by the criteria of Fisher and Student (F-test and t-test) have proved the hypothesis about its statistical significance only after excluding five countries, for which no direct connection is observed between the chosen indictors. Further research has shown that the level of the country economic development does not influence the passenger air carriages industry. Specific attention is paid to the state and main tendencies of passenger air carriages industry in Ukraine. Impact of tourism on this kind of activity is analysed. The basic measures to increase its efficiency are highlighted.
