Cortazzi, Hugh, ed. Carmen Blacker. GB Folkestone: Amsterdam University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9781898823568.

Full text
Abstract:
Carmen Blacker was an outstanding scholar of Japanese culture, known internationally for her writings on religion, myth and folklore – her most notable work being The Catalpa Bow: A Study of Shamanistic Practices in Japan. Importantly, a third of the volume comprises significant extracts from the author’s diaries covering a period of more than forty years, together with a plate section drawn from her extensive photographic archive, thus providing a rare opportunity to gain a personal insight into the author’s life and work. The volume includes a wide selection of writings from distinguished scholars such as Donald Keene and her former pupil Peter Kornicki in celebration of her work and legacy, together with various essays and papers by Carmen Blacker herself that have hitherto not been widely available. In addition to her scholarship, Carmen Blacker was also highly regarded for her work in promoting Japanese Studies at Cambridge and played a vital role in helping to re-establish The Japan Society, London, post-war.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the development of Transparency International (TI) through the remarkable story of the transformation of the personal idea of its founder, Peter Eigen, and its esteemed recognition as one of the world’s most influential NGOs. Peter Eigen founded TI in May 1993 after two decades at the World Bank, in response to his frustration over the refusal of the World Bank to take action against corruption. The discussion includes a description of the central ideas on which TI was founded, the initial resistance to the use of transparency in its name, and the strategic choice of a headquarters that would not be linked to the United States.

Abstract:
Peter Jones argues that human rights can address violations of the determination principle, but cannot address violations of the selfhood principle. In this commentary, it is argued that international human rights norms should address both violations, for two key reasons. First, these violations are continuous in their underlying ideologies and in their effects on those whose rights to self-determination are denied. Second, international law was itself complicit in creating both categories of violations, and so has a special responsibility to correct them.

Starbuck, Peter. Peter F. Drucker’s Management by Objectives and Self-Control. Edited by Adrian Wilkinson, Steven J. Armstrong, and Michael Lounsbury. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198708612.013.5.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the emergence in 1954 and the evolution of Peter F. Drucker’s Management by Objectives—MbO—into what he termed a principle of management. It sets down its purpose, which is the integration of all management functions. Recorded is the involvement and cooperation with Drucker, by the Englishman John Humble who complimented Drucker’s conceptual work by producing operational books. The rise and then the apparent fall and disappearance of MbO is challenged as evidence is provided that it has been amalgamated with Quality Management and become the Japanese evolved method of management Hoshin Kanri, which is being applied by many international businesses.

Abstract:
On 13 May 2019 Peter Häberle celebrated his 85th birthday. The present volume documents the results of a festive colloquium in Hamburg. It is a personal homage of an international circle of friends and students, which – oriented on three major research interests if the jubilant: constitution, public welfare and peace – discusses fundamental questions of the constitutional state. Facing the current challenges of liberal political orders through authoritarianism and populism, the volume´s contributions stand up resolutely for a “culture of the constitution”, oriented towards the common good, against a cult of power. Included are, amongst others, Peter Häberle´s contribution on a “Culture of Peace” and on the “Weimar Constitution”. Congratulations from all over the world reflect quintessential constitutional questions from a very individual angle. Abstract:
This volume addresses the international challenges that the US faces in the post-Trump era. Will President Joe Biden succeed in restoring the traditional leadership role of the US? What are the international and domestic hurdles for Biden in advancing his foreign policy agenda? Drawing on a liberal perspective in international relations, the chapters highlight how domestic and international politics are intertwined. Societal interests, partisan polarisation, and executive–legislative relations shape the hegemon’s international role in various policy areas, such as arms control and climate and trade policy, but also regarding the country’s relationships towards friends and foes. The book brings together the expertise of scholars who specialise in the US and transatlantic relations, in celebration of Jürgen Wilzewski. Abstract:
The chapter covers Edith’s research into the oil industry and multinational companies, and the rise of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, including publication of The Large International Firm in Developing Countries (1968), which challenged the traditional theories of international trade and investment as they applied to the oil industry. She was the first to discover the significance of transfer pricing and tax avoidance. She started seminars on the international petroleum industry with Peter Odell and later with Robert Mabro, at St Anthony’s College, Oxford. Edith travelled extensively, analysing the impact of multinationals on the economic welfare of the countries in which they operated, focusing on the efforts made by governments to retain as much as possible of their economic and political sovereignty, while still benefiting from the resources and capabilities of foreign investors. By the time of the ‘oil crisis’ of 1973 she was considered one of the top oil economists in the world.

Scholar, Richard, ed. Divided Cities. Oxford University Press, 2006. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780192807083.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Cities, at their best, are cradles of diversity, opportunity, and citizenship. Why, then, do so many cities today seem scarred by divisions separating the powerful and privileged from the victims of deprivation and injustice? What is it like to live on the wrong side of the divide in Paris, London, New York, Sao Paolo, and other cities all over the world? In this book, based on the internationally renowned Oxford Amnesty Lectures, eight leading urban thinkers argue about why divisions arise in cities and about what could and should be done to bring those divisions to an end. The book features essays by Patrick Declerck, Stuart Hall, David Harvey, Richard Rogers, Patricia Williams, and James Wolfensohn, with commentaries from Peter Hall, Michael Likosky, and others. The many contemporary issues that the book addresses include the impact of globalization and migration on the urban environment, the consequences of the 'war on terror' for those living in cities, the new development paradigm being adopted by international institutions in the developing world, the need for a genuine urban renaissance in Britain and elsewhere, and the suffering of the homeless. These controversial and sometimes conflicting essays, linked by Richard Scholar's incisive introduction, aim to encourage and inform debate about the challenges to human rights in our increasingly urban world.

Lott, Marie Sumner. Publishing Chamber Music. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252039225.003.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the institution of chamber music publishing by looking closely at three internationally significant publishers. In all three cases, publishers sought to balance their production of “monumental” and “ephemeral” products to establish and maintain a reliable source of income and new musical material for themselves and, by extension, the musicians who relied upon them. Individually, the three firms represent different models with diverse priorities and business strategies: a small business established by a chamber music lover and copyright activist (Hofmeister); a larger firm that grew with the musical marketplace, changing hands at several points and evolving to address the needs of a growing public (Peters); and a midsize firm that specialized in practical music for private and public use (Schlesinger, later Lienau-Schlesinger). Together, these three companies provides a picture of the music business as it developed throughout the Romantic era.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
On the basis of systems theory, Gunther Teubner has developed a sociologically informed theory of law and constitutionalism that does not rest on the sovereign state, but on the functionally differentiated society. From this point of view, law and constitutionalism can also emerge without a state: in transnational political processes on the one hand and in the ‘private’ spheres of world society on the other. The search for unity and hierarchy in the law may be futile under these circumstances. As Teubner suggests, however, collisions between the various constitutional fragments may be addressed by a new kind of conflicts law that follows the model of private international law. Abstract:
This two-volume set presents detailed interpretations of singular performances by several of the most compelling actors in cinema history, asking in many different and complementary ways what makes performance meaningful, how it reflects a director's style, as well as how it contributes to the development of national cinemas and cultures. Whether noting the precise ways actors shape film narrative, achieve emotional effect, or move toward political subversion, the essays in these books innovate new approaches to studying screen performance as an art form and cultural force. This second volume focuses on international cinema, and includes case studies of key performances from actors like Ingrid Bergman, Gael Garcia Bernal, Nikolai Cherkassov, Alec Guinness, Setsuko Hara, Isabelle Huppert, Peter Lorre, Madhubala, Anna Magnani, Toshirô Mifune, and Choi Min Sik, amongst many others.

Abstract:
The essays collected in this book are the results of an international and interdisciplinary conference which addressed the topic of shared perspectives in common values and which focused on an obviously very difficult question: Bearing different mechanisms, such as financial transfers and the logic of institutions, in mind, what is the basic cultural link in the values of European integration? The tremors and disintegrative effects the EU has been experiencing for quite some time are not least the result of a shift in its perspective that the idea of the common values of a European society being able to act as a civilising force is either a) non-existent or b) underdeveloped in many of its Member States, or c) has even been strongly rejected by some of them. Walden, Victoria. Studying Hammer Horror. Liverpool University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9781906733322.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
When Hammer Productions was formed in the 1920s, no one foresaw the impact this small, independent studio would have on the international film market. Christopher Lee's mesmerizing, animalistic, yet gentlemanly performance as Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, and the Mummy were celebrated worldwide, and the Byronic qualities of Peter Cushing's Dr. Frankenstein, among his many other Hammer characters, proved impossible to forget. Hammer maintained consistent period settings, creating a timeless and enchanting aesthetic. This book treats Hammer as a quintessentially British product and through a study of its work investigates larger conceptions of national horror cinemas. The book examines genre, auteur theory, stardom, and representation within case studies of Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Twins of Evil (1971), and Hammer's latest film, Beyond the Rave (2008). The book weighs Hammer's impact on the British film industry, past and present. Intended for students, fans, and general readers, this book transcends superficial preconceptions of Hammer horror in order to reach the essence of Hammer.

Abstract:
Children´s Rights – A Handbook for practioners, ed. by Ingo Richter, Lothar Krappmann and Friederike Wapler. More than twenty years ago, the UN adopted the International Convention on the Rights of the Child. And, finally, after more than twenty years of public dispute, in 2018 the German government decided to incorporate the rights of children into the country’s constitution. But what are children´s rights? What does the UN Convention mean by children´s rights? Have they been implemented in Germany in the past, and how will they look in the future? In this handbook, fifteen legal experts from different fields, such as the family, education, work, the media, migration, data protection, criminality etc., try to find an encompassing answer to these questions. The book has been written for lawyers and social scientists, particularly for those who have to deal with these rights in their everyday work, so that they know how to implement them in the future. Abstract:

Abstract:
Sharing recipes is a form of intimate conversation that nourishes body and soul, family and community. Backstories: The Kitchen Table Talk Cookbook integrates formal scholarship with informal reflections, analyses of recipe books with heirloom recipes, and text with images to emphasize the ways that economics, politics, and personal meaning come together to shape our changing relationships with food. By embracing elements of history, rural studies, and women’s studies, this volume offers a unique perspective by relating food history with social dynamics. It is sure to inspire eclectic dining and conversations. Cynthia C. Prescott is Professor of History at the University of North Dakota and an occasional baker. Her research focuses on portrayals of rural women in cultural memory. Maureen Sherrard Thompson is a Ph.D. candidate at Florida International University. Her dissertation focuses on business, environmental, and gender perspectives associated with the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century seed industry. Abstract:
Religions are increasingly being regarded as relevant partners in international development cooperation due to their special attributes. However, to date there has been little research into what the special attributes of religious development agencies actually are or how such organisations employ them. What resources do religious NGOs draw on in development cooperation? How do such NGOs differ from other development agencies? Does their engagement make a considerable difference to collaborative development work? Using empirical case studies and theoretical analysis, the contributions in this book address these questions. In doing so, they examine different religions and their collaborative development work in various regions of the world, and chart the most recent changes in religions. The list of contributors offering assessments of these classic works is impressive as well, featuring scholars such as Peter John, David Lowery, and Laurence E. Lynn, Jr. Each chapter of the handbook presents a classic work, lays out its treatment in the years and decades since its publication, and comes to an assessment of its place in the field of public policy and administration. The collection of classic works demonstrates the breadth of the field of public policy and administration, touching on topics ranging from mobilization and political participation to decision-making across types of organizations and levels of government. Although public policy and administration may not in some respects constitute a well-defined area of inquiry, this collection demonstrates that there is a core of classic works that have had a seminal impact in the field, broadly construed, over time and across national and continental boundaries. The collection also elucidates enduring interactions between public policy and administration and other social scientific disciplines, such as economics, sociology, and especially political science.

Brehy, Petrus Hercules. Instrumental Works from the Library of the Royal Conservatories, Brussels. Edited by Lewis Reece Baratz. A-R Editions, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.31022/b215.

Full text
Abstract:
Brussels native Petrus Hercules Brehy (1673–1737) composed twelve sonatas for two violins, viola, basso viola, and continuo around 1715–22, and two sonatas for five instruments and continuo approximately ten years later, all during his tenure as zangmeester of the Collegiate Church of SS. Michael and Gudula. Since 1929 the autograph manuscripts have been conserved at the Library of the Royal Conservatories of Music, Brussels. Unlike Brehy's earlier symphonias, these were not published during his lifetime and were written to be played by a mix of professional musicians, able clerics, and older choirboys. Six of the twelve sonatas for four instruments and continuo reflect the earlier polyphonic ensemble sonata da chiesa of the late seventeenth century, four feature the violin in more flamboyant soloistic passagework, and two contain elements of both idioms. The two sonates à 5 are consistent with the late Baroque international style. All the sonatas in this volume reflect the somewhat conservative religious style of a Habsburg Empire territory capital during the early eighteenth century.

Abstract:
This is a new edition of the established authority on the law relating to directors of companies incorporated under the UK Companies Acts. The new edition features all important developments in the law including the Small Business, Enterprise and Employment Act 2015 which improves transparency (including requiring directors to be natural persons unless exceptions apply), simplifies company filing requirements, clarifies the application of general duties to shadow directors, modernises directors’ disqualification and reforms insolvency law to facilitate proceedings where there has been wrongdoing. There has been a wealth of new case law relevant to directors’ duties before the English courts, all of which are analysed and explained, including the Supreme Court decisions in Prest v Petrodel Resources, Jetivia v Bilta (UK), FHR European Ventures v Cedar Capital Partners and Eclairs Group v JKX Oil & Gas, the Court of Appeal decisions in Smithton Ltd v Naggar and Newcastle International Airport v Eversheds as well as the important High Court decisions in Universal Project Management Services v Fort Gilkicker, Madoff Securities International v Raven and the wrongful trading case, Re Ralls Builders. Non-UK cases are also analysed including Weavering Macro Fixed Income Fund Ltd v Peterson in the Cayman Islands’ Court of Appeal and the 2016 decision of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal Chen v Jason. In keeping with developments in case law and legislation the book now includes expanded coverage of multiple derivatives claims, directors’ exposure to third party claims and a new chapter on civil remedies for market abuse. The third edition is a complete reference work on the law relating to company directors and is the first port of call for all serious corporate lawyers and scholars on this subject.

Abstract:
Whites and Reds: A History of Wine in the Lands of Tsar and Commissar tells the story of Russia’s encounter with viniculture and winemaking. Rooted in the early-seventeenth century, embraced by Peter the Great, and then magnified many times over by the annexation of the indigenous wine economies and cultures of Georgia, Crimea, and Moldova in the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, viniculture and winemaking became an important indicator of Russia’s place at the European table. While the Russian Revolution in 1917 left many of the empire’s vineyards and wineries in ruins, it did not alter the political and cultural meanings attached to wine. Stalin himself embraced champagne as part of the good life of socialism, and the Soviet Union became a winemaking superpower in its own right, trailing only Spain, Italy, and France in the volume of its production. Whites and Reds illuminates the ideas, controversies, political alliances, technologies, business practices, international networks, and, of course, the growers, vintners, connoisseurs, and consumers who shaped the history of wine in the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union over more than two centuries. Because wine was domesticated by virtue of imperialism, its history reveals many of the instabilities and peculiarities of the Russian and Soviet empires. Over two centuries, the production and consumption patterns of peripheral territories near the Black Sea and in the Caucasus became a hallmark of Russian and Soviet civilizational identity and cultural refinement. Wine in Russia was always more than something to drink.

Abstract:
The intensively discussed term transformation refers to the comprehensive restructuring of processes and behaviour in order to address societal challenges posed by far-reaching changes in energy, transport, production and agricultural systems. Since such complex transformations are always accompanied by uncertainties about their effects and consequences, the contributions in this volume critically examine the opportunities and risks involved in these processes and discuss the possibilities and limits of technology assessment in the context of societal transformations. The volume brings together the academic contributions to the 8th international conference of the Technology Assessment Network, which took place in Karlsruhe from 7th to 8th November 2018. Baldwin, Peter. The Narcissism of Minor Differences. Oxford University Press, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195391206.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
There is much heated rhetoric about the widening gulf between Europe and America. But are the US and Europe so different? Peter Baldwin, one of the world's leading historians of comparative social policy, thinks not, and in this bracingly argued but remarkably informed polemic, he lays out how similar the two continents really are. Drawing on the latest evidence from sources such as the United Nations, the World Bank, IMF, and other international organizations, Baldwin offers a fascinating comparison of the United States and Europe, looking at the latest statistics on the economy, crime, health care, education and culture, religion, the environment, and much more. It is a book filled with surprising revelations. For most categories of crime, for instance, America is safe and peaceful by European standards. But the biggest surprise is that, though there are many differences between America and Europe, in almost all cases, these differences are no greater than the differences among European nations. Europe and the US are, in fact, part of a common, big-tent grouping. America is not Sweden, for sure. But nor is Italy Sweden, nor France, nor even Germany. And who says that Sweden is Europe? Anymore than Vermont is America? "Meticulous, insistent, and elegant." --John Lloyd, Financial Times "A must-read...filled with intriguing facts that add nuance to what can often be a black-and-white debate." --Foreign Affairs "An exhaustive and enthralling catalogue of our commonalities that begs a reconsideration of just what it means to be European or American." --Publishers Weekly

Kelly, Phil. Defending Classical Geopolitics. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acrefore/9780190228637.013.279.

Full text
Abstract:
Three successive parts are presented within this article, all intended to raise the visibility and show the utility of classical geopolitics as a deserving and separate international-relations model: (a) a common traditional definition, (b) relevant theories that correspond to that definition, and (c) applications of certain theories that will delve at some depth into three case studies (the Ukrainian shatterbelt, contemporary Turkish geopolitics, and a North American heartland). The placement of states, regions, and resources, as affecting international relations and foreign policies, defines classical geopolitics. This definition emphasizes the application of spatially composed unbiased theories that should bring insight into foreign-affairs events and policies. Specifically, a “model” contains theories that correspond to its description. A “theory” is a simple sentence of probability, with “A” happening to likely affect “B.” Importantly, models are passive; they merely hold theories. In contrast, theories possess their own titles and perform actively when taken from such models.Various methodological challenges are presented: (a) combining concepts with theories, (b) estimating probability for testing theories, (c) claiming the “scientific,” (d) accounting for determinism, (e) revealing a dynamic environment for geopolitics, (f) separating realism from geopolitics, and (g) drawing classical geopolitics away from the critical. Certain theories that are placed within the geopolitical model are examined next: (a) heartlands and rimlands, (b) land and sea power, (c) choke points and maritime lines of communication, (d) offshore balancing, (e) the Monroe doctrine, (f) balances of power, (g) checkerboards, (h) shatterbelts, (i) pan-regions, (j) influence spheres, (k) dependency, (l) buffer states, (m) organic borders, (n) imperial thesis, (o) borders/wars, (p) contagion, (q) irredentism, (r) demography, (s) fluvial laws, (t) petro-politics, and (u) catastrophic events in nature. Additional theories apply elsewhere in the article as well.Of the three case studies, the Ukrainian shatterbelt represents the sole contemporary geopolitical configuration of this type, a regional conflict coupling with a strategic rivalry. Here, partisans of the civil war between the eastern and the western sectors of the country have joined with the Russians against the Europeans and Americans, respectively. Next, Turkey’s pivotal location has afforded it both advantages and disadvantages, a topic discussed at some length earlier in the article. Its “zero-problems” strategy of seeking positive relations with neighbors has now been forced to change tactics, reflective of new forces within and beyond the country. Finally, a North American heartland compares nicely to Halford Mackinder’s earlier Eurasia heartland thesis, with the American perhaps proving more stable, wealthy, and enduring, based in large part on its stronger geopolitical features.

Threlfall, E. J., J. Wain, and C. Lane. Salmonellosis. Oxford University Press, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198570028.003.0030.

Full text
Abstract:
Salmonellosis remains the second most common form of bacterial food-poisoning in the UK and in most of the developed economies. Although the number of isolations per annum has declined since 2000, over 10,000 laboratory-confirmed cases are recognised each year in England and Wales, and over 150,000 in Europe. Most of infections are associated with contaminated food, particularly of poultry origin, but also may originate from cattle and pigs, and to a lesser extent, sheep. The most common serovars from cases of human infection is Enteritidis, followed by Typhimurium. Contact with pets, particularly reptiles and amphibians is becoming an increasing problem and infections can be severe, particularly in children. Accurate and reproducible methods of identification and subtyping are crucial for meaningful epidemiological investigations, and traditional phenotypic methods of typing are now being supplemented by DNA- based methods such as pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, variable number of tandem repeats analysis, and multilocus sequence typing. The use of such methods in combination with phenotypic methods has been invaluable for outbreak control at the international level. The occurrence of resistance to antimicrobial drugs is an increasing problem, particularly in relation to the development of resistance to antimicrobials regarded as ‘critically-important’ for last resort therapy in humans. Control measures such as vaccination of poultry flocks appear to have had a substantial impact on the number of infections with Salmonella Enteritidis. Nevertheless good hygiene practices in both catering establishments and the home remain essential for the control of infections at the local level.
