Cancer cells preferentially metabolise glucose via aerobic glycolysis (the Warburg effect), which is less energy efficient in teens of ATP production compared to oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) encodes proteins of the electron transfer chain and is crucial for functional OXPHOS. Cross-sections of ankle extensor muscles stained immunohistochemically against slow myosin (MHC) determined if hypergravity affects the distribution of slow muscle fibers. Comparisons (ANOVA) between exposed and unexposed animals show hypergravity causes increases in slow fiber density in soleus after fourteen (p=0.049) and thirty day (p=0.Ol9) exposures. This work describes an investigation into potential mechanisms by which both the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and the redox protein thioredoxin (Trx) may modulate sensitivity to apoptosis in colon carcinoma via the transcription factor NF-κB. Previous PhD students in the lab created a method for large-scale, high-content microscopy screening of a cell library consisting of over 3000 single mutant strains of the fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe. Herpesviruses are known to modulate cellular pathways responsible for the recognition and repair of DNA lesions, collectively known as the DNA damage response (DDR).
