Abstract:
A recent literature has constructed top income shares time series over the long run for more than twenty countries using income tax statistics. Top incomes represent a small share of the population but a very significant share of total income and total taxes paid. Hence, aggregate economic growth per capita and Gini inequality indexes are sensitive to excluding or including top incomes. We discuss the estimation methods and issues that arise when constructing top income share series, including income definition and comparability over time and across countries, tax avoidance, and tax evasion. The well-known positive association between health and income in adulthood has antecedents in childhood. Not only is children's health positively related to household income, but the relationship between household income and children's health becomes more pronounced as children age. Part of the relationship can be explained by the arrival and impact of chronic conditions. Children from lower-income households with chronic conditions have worse health than do those from higher-income households. The adverse health effects of lower income accumulate over children's lives. Part of the intergenera

Increased financial well-being is often assumed to be a benefit of full-time employment for handicapped individuals. However, there is some evidence that this is not true. In this study a balance sheet approach was utilized to examine the financial implications of part-time and full-time employment for persons with handicaps. Balance sheets (income versus expenses) were developed for three income levels: no earned income, income from a part-time (20 hours a week) job, and income from a full-time (40 hours a week) job. The results indicated that net disposable income was comparable for individu

Abstract Out-of-pocket prescription drug costs are rapidly rising, particularly for insulin, which is a life-saving drug used by 3.1 million diabetics on Medicare. High out-of-pocket costs place an accentuated financial strain on older adults with diabetes, many of whom have low incomes, and may impede medication adherence, leading to poor health outcomes. The Medicare Part D Low-Income Subsidy (LIS) program limits drug co-pays to under $8.50 per prescription and caps out-of-pocket drug costs for lowest-income recipients (<135% Federal Poverty Level, FPL), resulting in pronounced differ

The economic vulnerability of children in lone-parent families has drawn attention to child support policy. After 13 years of constant policy changes the child support system remains highly problematic and is currently undergoing an independent review. Given this, it is timely to question whether child support payments (from all types of agreements, not just Child Support Agency assessments) are actually helping lone-mother families. Or are most low-income mothers connected to men who have little capacity to pay, so that child support actually helps only moderate-income families? This article

We examined the relationship between income, mortality, and loss of years of healthy life in a sample of older persons in Japan. We analyzed 22,829 persons aged 65 or older who were functionally independent at baseline as a part of the Aichi Gerontological Evaluation Study (AGES). Two outcome measures were adopted, mortality and loss of healthy life. Independent variables were income level and age. The occurrence of mortality and need for care during these 1,461 days were tracked. Cox regressions were used to calculate the hazard ratio for mortality and loss of healthy life by income level. We

The paper aims to investigate family farm income volatility by decomposing disposable farm income (DFI) into the on-farm income, income from production support and off-farm income (OFI) over time. The research is focused on the OFI, assessing its role in achieving DFI above reference level based on the average net earnings. Three main indicators consistent with Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) were indicated. The research results revealed the significance of OFI. In 2017, 76% of the family farms were engaged in off-farm activities indicating, on one hand that such approaches as part-time f
