Abstract:
What we see is not a simple consequence of the light sent to our eyes. Vision has two powerful spatial transformations of scene luminances: one optical; the other neural. The first spatial redistribution of light is intraocular scatter. Scattered light reduces the dynamic range of the retinal image compared to light from the scene. The second spatial transformation comes from neural processing that causes appearances to vary with the scene’s content. A beach scene, (mostly max-luminance scene elements, and maximal scattered light) has the highest slope neural response function. The post-quanta

Abstract:
Previously we have demonstrated that prolonged exposure to 100% ambient oxygen leads to a marked loss in functional lung volume and lung compliance, hypoxemia, and surfactant system abnormalities similar to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). However, 50% oxygen administration is believed to be safe in most clinical settings. In the present study, we have evaluated the effects of a 24-h exposure to 50% oxygen in rabbits immediately following experimental gastric acid aspiration. During hydrostatic pulmonary edema, active Na+ transport and alveolar fluid reabsorption are decreased. Dopamine (DA) and isoproterenol (ISO) have been shown to increase active Na+ transport in rat lungs by upregulating Na+-K+-ATPase in the alveolar epithelium. We studied the effects of DA and ISO in isolated rat lungs with increased left atrial pressure (Pla = 15 cmH2O) compared with control rats with normal Pla (Pla = 0). Alveolar fluid reabsorption decreased from control value of 0.51 ± 0.02 to 0.27 ± 0.02 ml/h when Pla was increased to 15 cmH2O ( P < 0.001). DA and ISO increased the alv
