This mapping is exemplified through case studies of one incubator for each of the four categories. The authors argue that one interpretative key to explain the dynamics of the incubation industry is the evolution of company requirements and consequently of the services offered by incubators. AbstractWithin the European Big Data Ecosystem, cross-organisational and cross-sectorial experimentation and innovation environments play a central role. European Innovation Spaces (or i-Spaces for short) are the main elements to ensure that research on big data value technologies and novel applications can be quickly tested, piloted and exploited for the benefit of all stakeholders. In particular, i-Spaces enable stakeholders to develop new businesses facilitated by advanced Big Data Value (BDV) technologies, applications and business models, bringing together all blocks, actors and functionalities expected to provide IT infrastructure, support and assistance, data protection, privacy and governance, community building and linkages with other innovation spaces, as well as incubation and accelerator services. Thereby, i-Spaces contribute to building a community, providing a catalyst for engagement and acting as incubators and accelerators of data-driven innovation, with cross-border collaborations as a key aspect to fully unleash the potential of data to support the uptake of European AI and related technologies.

Entrepreneurship is a trigger for growth and development in the global economy. Nowadays, business incubators centers have grown in importance to promote start-up programs and different services aimed to consolidate and grow new business initiatives. The objective of this research was to define an entrepreneurial model based on the best practices of the Business Incubator Center of the Accounting and Administration School at the Autonomous University of Chihuahua in Mexico. A survey of registered companies in incubation between May 2015 and July 2018 was conducted. The main results were divided into two stages, considering 101 and 318 companies, respectively. Correlations and regression analyses in this study indicate no differences in gender regarding entrepreneurial activity and business operations. A confirmed model for business incubation is outlined.

Abstract:
Business incubators (BIs) are property-based initiatives that provide nascent entrepreneurs access to a mix of business support services and networking opportunities. These services are expected to foster the idea generation process from inception to commercialisation, with the hope they will later develop into self-sustaining, thriving ventures. Digital technologies have enabled BIs to extend their support services to include new digital services, and to expand their geographical coverage, giving rise to the virtual business incubator (VBI). This chapter provides a detailed review of the BI from its origin until the emergence of the VBI, highlighting their main characteristics, differences, and benefits. Furthermore, the author argues the view of the VBI as an extension of the BI is insufficient to fully understand its operations, value-added incubation services, and contribution to venture success. Therefore, a novel conceptual framework to define the VBI is proposed.

The local authorities' incubator for social enterprises should be supporting the connection of local companies that apply CSR with social enterprises that are trying to succeed social value. The research in this chapter relied on a systematic literature review. After reviewing the literature, a methodology has been developed that describes the process of designing and implementing a local authorities' incubator and the synergies with social enterprises and CSR. The benefit of a local authorities' incubator in the field of social entrepreneurship is the facilitation of new social enterprises to overcome knowledge barriers and implement best business practices. Finally, in this chapter, it is suggested that the cooperation between local companies that apply CSR and local social enterprises under the guidance and support of local authorities' incubator could create synergies and produce new local certified PGI (protected geographical indication) or PDO (protected designations of origin) social/ethical/green/fair-trade products and services and promote the local economy.

Abstract:
The ever increasing competition in which firms operate at a global scale and the need to shift the type of economic growth have led countries to adopt instruments that give them a competitive advantage and deliver growth based on entrepreneurship and innovation. One instrument is the incubation of new business ideas, where incubators play a relevant role in helping firms to survive and grow during their initial stages. This chapter analyzes and discusses the incubation process in three different types of business incubators in Portugal, describing their modus operandi, the relationship with the incubatees, and the results obtained. The main findings are the three incubators are focused on stimulating entrepreneurship, new business ideas and innovation, and are concerned in being a facilitator agent of the success of those new projects; however, some differences might be seen among these incubators, namely in terms of criteria used to select the new business ideas or projects, the support services provided to the incubatees, the incubation period, and the type of projects supported.
