Abstract:
Incunabula are printed materials created in Europe from the time of Johann Gutenberg's invention until 1500. Incunabula originate from the Latin language (lat. Incunabulum) and mean cradle or the beginning of something. In this paper, the representation of individual states and cities in the creation of incunabula is investigated and presented. The persons responsible for such development are also listed. Special attention is given to the presentation of Croatian incunabula. The mentioned works describe the characteristic features. Incunabula testify to a high level of culture, standards, and technological development of a particular area. The studied works reveal and confirm, as confirmed in this paper, the attitude of society towards literacy, education, and the national culture of each nation. This paper aims to comprehensively present the importance of incunabula for the development of European and Croatian culture, technological and comprehensive progress.

Due to their likeness to incunabula and publishing specifics, post-incunabula are considered to be historical treasures and monuments of culture. The Rare Book and Manuscript Department of the National Library of Lithuania has in its holdings more than 800 post-incunabula, not including the ones kept at the Department of the National Archival Fund of Published Documents. The exact number is still unknown, since not all the books have been included into the electronic catalogue: more than 200 of them have only a card catalogue description and are awaiting a more detailed study. This article analyses specific features of part of the post-incunabula collection in the NLL Rare Book and Manuscript Department: their place of publication, publishers, thematics and provenances. Principal attention is accorded to the books that are rarer, more interesting and more important for Lithuania’s culture and book culture in general. The most of the post-incunabula kept in the Rare Book and Manuscript Department were published in Germany, many in Switzerland, France and Italy. There also is a small number of post-incunabula published in Poland (Cracow). Of the publications produced by Cracow’s printers, the article discusses those by Jan Haller (ca. 1467–1525), Hieronim Wietor (ca. 1480–1546) and Florian Ungler (d. 1536). It is necessary to mention Aldines – the publications by one of themost famous European printers, Aldo Manuzio (Lat. Aldus Manutius; ca. 1450–1515) and by his descendants. The article also touches upon the work of such acclaimed French publishers as Henri Estienne (lat. Henricus Stephanus, ca. 1460–1520), founder of the famous dinasty of printers, and the Lyonese printer Sébastien Gryphius (ca. 1493–1556). The Rare Book and Manuscript Department also keeps quite a few post-incunabula published by Johannes Frobenof Basel (1460–1537).As to the content aspect, the collection of post-incunabula in the department is versatile. For the most part, it is made up by religious literature: sermons, bibles, theological treatises, Church Fathers’ writings. There are many works by and commentaries on classical authors, of whom Cicero, at the time of the Renaissance viewed as the greatest authority on rhetoric, is the most famous one. The post-incunabula collection illuminates the emergence of the Reformations and the related spread of new ideas in the first half of the XVIth century. The Rare Book and Manuscript Department boasts a number of works by the founder of Protestantism, Martin Luther (1483–1546) and by the most acclaimed humanist of the times, Desiderius Erasmus (1469–1536).The provenances in the post-incunabula (manuscript inscriptions, stamps, bookplates) provide much interesting information. Most often found are ownership marks of the establishments that since the olden times had been preserving books: various monasteries, churches and priest seminaries,. The notable representative of the post-incunabulum culture is the Bernardine Order. According to the electronic catalogue, the Rare Book and Manuscript Departmenthas in its holdings 21 post-incunabula formerly kept by the library of the Tytuvėnai Bernardine Monastery. Most provenance inscriptions are from Kaunas Priest Seminary, the library of the Samogitian Priest Seminary, the library of the Vilnius Seminary and Kražiai College. Of the XIXth century personal libraries, particularly noteworthy are the collections of Jonas Krizostomas Gintila (1788–1857), XIXth-century bibliophile, hebraist and administrator of the Samogitian Diocese, and of Friedrich August Gotthold (1778–1858), educator and music theorist. A separate, rather abundant group of provenance inscriptions consists of the books that formerly belonged to Königsberg University. An in-depth study of all the post-incunabula kept in the NLL would significantly add to the existing research and broaden the understanding of old book culture.

Hebrew incunabula amount to a rather modest, in terms of number, group of around 150 editions that were printed within the period from the late 60s of the 15th century to January 1, 1501 in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Turkey. Despite such a small number of Hebrew incunabula, the role they played in the history of the formation of European printing cannot be overlooked. Even less possible is to overestimate the importance of Hebrew incunabula for understanding Jewish spiritual life as it evolved in Europe during the Renaissance.Russian depositories house 43 editions of Hebrew incunabula, in 113 copies and fragments. The latter are distributed as following: the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences — 67 items stored; the Russian State Library — 38 items; the National Library of Russia — 7 items; the Jewish Religious Community of Saint Petersburg — 1 item. The majority of these books came in public depositories at the late 19th — first half of the 20th century from private collections of St. Petersburg collectors: Moses Friedland (1826—1899), Daniel Chwolson (1819—1911) and David Günzburg (1857—1910). This article looks into the circumstances of how exactly these incunabula were acquired by the depositories. For the first time there are analysed publications of Russian scholars that either include descriptions of Hebrew incunabula (inventories, catalogues, lists) or related to various aspects of Hebrew incunabula studies. The article presents the first annotated bibliography of all domestic publications that are in any way connected with Hebrew incunabula, covering the period from 1893 (the first publication) to the present. In private collections, there was paid special attention to the formation of incunabula collections. It was expressed in the allocation of incunabula as a separate group of books in printed catalogues and the publication of research works on incunabula studies, which belonged to the pen of collectors themselves and haven’t lost their scientific relevance today.

Examination of nearly a thousand books printed before 1500 has revealed indexes, some printed, some manuscript, in 83 of them, enabling some conclusions to be made on late medieval indexing policy and practice. The likelihood of indexing in particular subject areas; whether the index (or registrum or tabula) is explained; and the structure of the indexes, are among topics covered. The vagaries of primitive alphabetization are outlined, and an attempt is made to assess quality. Some of the indexers of these indexes are known by name. There is much worthy of study in medieval indexes, which are not merely of antiquarian interest. A list of the examined items is given.

Abstract:
The term "incunabula" refers to the transition period that took place 50 years after Johannes Gutenberg introduced his printing press to the publishing world (1455 to 1505). In this thesis, I compare the first incunabula to the current "Digital Incunabula," which I believe is the 50-year transition underway as we assimilate traditional storytelling practices to a digital platform (1996 to 2046). To illustrate this, I review the histories of the literal age, the secondary orality and the digital orality before making some observations about our transition into multimedia storytelling. The paper reviews several key experiments in multimedia storytelling produced by The New York Times, The Rocky Mountain News and The Guardian among others. The paper reviews the influences of consumer electronic devices including tablet computers, augmented reality, virtual reality and artificial intelligence. It also reflects upon nonfiction narrative forms for written and oral communication media. The paper also considers aspects of copyright policy, public media policy and the influences of the "digital disruption." The paper concludes with some observations about the future of long-form, nonfiction storytelling as we move through the 21st century.

The aim of this work is to catalogue the incunabula collection of Juan Carlos Reppucci, owner of an extensive library on wine and related themes (wine, grape, vineyard, vintage, drunkenness etc.). After a panoramic view of incunabula and press in the 15th century, and a brief characterization of the whole collection, each of the 72 incunabula was thoroughly described according international rules for rare books, in order to create a reference guide for researchers of different areas.

Tittle, Miles C. "Pen and Printing-Block: William Morris and the Resurrection of Medieval Paratextuality." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/20581.

Full text
Abstract:
My dissertation, Pen and Printing-Block: William Morris and the Resurrection of Medieval Paratextuality, considers William Morris’s influence on the rise of paratextual awareness, his negotiation strategies for Victorian England’s social identity, and his rhetorical construction of an idealized past through textual artifacts. The effect of Morris’s growing social awareness on his transition from illumination to print is reframed by considering his calligraphy as paratextual experiments, based on medieval examples, in combining graphic and discursive meanings with rhetorical and social dimensions. The varied and less ambitious agendas of those printers who followed Morris’s Kelmscott Press, however, limited Morris’s legacy in the book arts. The full significance of his illuminations’ meaningful interplay between text and image, and the social intent of these innovations applications in print, has received little critical attention. The opening chapter frames Morris’s visual work in light of his philosophies and introduces the major concerns of material art, the role of history, the limits of language, and the question of meaningful labour. The second chapter surveys select predecessors of Morris’s developing conception of the Gothic, the significance of architecture as its defining form, and the irreplaceability of the physical past. The third chapter considers the role of the illuminated manuscript in Pre-Raphaelite art, tracing Morris’s calligraphic experiments chronologically while identifying medieval inspirations and examining his artistic development. These experiments led to his final collaborative manuscript, the illuminated Æneid which is the fourth chapter’s focus. The sophistication of its paratextual elements is discussed in light of its unique physicality and limitations. The fifth chapter asserts the Kelmscott Press’s role in balancing craftsmanship and aesthetic paratextual strategies with reproducible models. The Kelmscott Chaucer is the culmination of these strategies, and it is compared to the visual rhetoric of its predecessors. The final chapter compares the philosophies and calligraphic elements of major private presses that followed Kelmscott’s legacy. This evolution of aesthetic, social, and practical considerations is also identified in the work of selected Canadian printers, and a final note considers the implications of the rise of immaterial digital text (radiant textuality) for the continuation of material paratextuality’s role in the future.

Abstract:
The body of incunabula and antique books available on line is expressive and tends to correspond to the Humanities research demands, stressing the need to improve instruments to the research and access to the works content: text transcription and text markers; creation of connection points, such as summaries with the works textual and iconographic content; implementation of translation tools. Literature review about digital libraries was articulated with the Digital Humanities issues, consenting to characterise the current state research and to identify new projects in this domain; it was complemented with the research in book studies to describe incunabula and antique books concepts. The direct observation of digital libraries websites and incunabula and antique books collections available in digital libraries allowed to collect data about digital edition and research and retrieval data models, as well as to identify the incunabula and antique books specific features and the way how these interferes in making them available online. The research method included the interaction with a focal group with Humanities researchers with the goal of collect data about the way how they use digital libraries, the advantages and disadvantages towards their physical congeners and their expectations for improvement and better correspondence to the research. The results were validated by a Humanities researcher’s panel.

Abstract:

Goff’s Incunabula in North American Libraries: A Third Census and the Indice Generale degli Incunaboli delle Biblioteche d’Italia, it aimed to be a comprehensive list both of 15th-century editions and of surviving copies of incunabula. While maintaining its original purpose, it has striven to take advantage of new partnerships and technical innovations to ensure its continued utility as a cornerstone of incunabula research. Managed by the British Library in London and hosted by CERL, the ISTC continues to rely on cooperation and partnership from holding institutions and researchers worldwide. Free since 2003, the ISTC can be used as a simple guide to editions and copies, but also as a dataset enabling researchers to look at 15th-century printing in new ways. After briefly looking at the ISTC’s history, this essay focuses on new developments made to the database, highlighting its continued relevance and potential to support traditional incunabula research as well as new projects, and its managers’ intention and flexibility to improve the file in response to its users’ feedback.

Abstract:
This chapter assesses the cognitive agency exercised by Roman children, both individually and jointly, in their own religious learning. Roman children can best be described not as students, for they typically did not receive formal instruction, but as apprentices in cult. The chapter begins by sketching very briefly the ontogeny, that is, the development and maturation, of some aspects of social cognition relevant to this account of Roman children's religious learning. It then explores imitation as an individualistic mode of social learning in which Roman children learned to pray by observing others in prayer. The chapter also looks at the Roman child's participatory learning through sharing Intentionality and agency in collaborative ritual actions. Finally, it takes up the question of formal religious pedagogy by examining some evidence for children's choral training.
